Funds raised by space rentals at the annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 yard sale are donated to the IU 13 Social Work Fund, which can cover a variety of needs of IU 13 students. “Social workers (recently) used the funds to help a family facing eviction,” noted
Carrie Bruey, IU 13 supervisor of autism solutions, which provides individualized psychological supports for children with autism. The 2018 sale, which is the fund’s largest benefit event, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Burle Business Park on New Holland Avenue in Lancaster. “We try to live out the parable of the Good Samaritan. We recognize people … who are hurting and suffering in our communities. We meet them where they’re at, and we respond with generosity and compassion,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Services, when he spoke recently at a meeting of the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixville-area churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. The Ephrata location provides an 8,000square-foot homeless shelter to as many as 35 women and children per See Good Samaritan pg 5
Nate Hoffer, executive director of Good Samaritan Services, recently spoke at a meeting of the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. The nonprofit organization helps those facing homelessness in locations in both Lancaster and Chester counties.

Individuals are invited to attend an information session for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period to receive valuable information to assist persons in making a well-informed decision about their health and drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are allowed to change the amounts of their plan deductibles, co-pays, and total out-of-pocket expenses, as well as their drug formularies each year, which is why Medicare strongly recommends that beneficiaries compare their current plan against other plans available for 2019. The information sessions are for people already on Medicare and enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, readers may call Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717299-7979, 800-801-3070, or by email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us.

Yard Sale from pg 1 jewelry, DVDs, produce, and handmade items, among others. Bruey noted that vendors selling a variety of merchandise take part in the event, including representatives of home-based businesses and families selling outgrown clothing, toys, and other household items. In addition to raising funds from space rentals, IU 13 employees sell food at the event. This year’s menu will include breakfast sandwiches and coffee in the morning and hot dogs, baked goods, and cold beverages at lunch time. Approximately 200 IU 13 employees help organize the yard sale. About 40 employees are on-site on the day of the event and many more donate food to be sold. Helping families avoid eviction is just one way the Social Work
Fund aids students. The fund also helps cover clothing costs or medication for IU 13 students. Funds may also be used to cover field trip expenses, school supplies, school lunches, bus passes, groceries, gas, and other necessities. Bruey noted that last year’s yard sale raised nearly $3,000 for the fund. Other fundraisers that the group holds during the year include pretzel sales, a dressdown day, a dinner at a local restaurant, and a paint night. Following the event, IU 13 organizers arrange for a local organization to pick up leftover items that vendors no longer want. This year, a company will take donations for the American Red Cross. There is still room for vendors to take part in the sale. Those wishing to rent a space to sell items may contact tina_herr@iu13.org or 717-606-1600.

Good Samaritan from pg 1 day. The Phoenixville shelter for single men can also house 35. The Lancaster and Coatesville offices focus on permanent housing. “Our staff (in those offices) help single mothers stay in their (homes),” explained Hoffer. “Our program will step in with rental assistance to keep (a mother and) her children in housing to prevent them from having to come to the shelter.” Hoffer added that the process of being uprooted and moved to a shelter is especially difficult on children, who may struggle with poor academic performance and even health issues related to homelessness. Hoffer noted that Good Samaritan may spend up to $9,000 per month in rental assistance helping people stay in their homes, translating to serving up to 65 children each day through its programs. According to Hoffer, the Good Samaritan model utilizes a holistic approach that includes financial assistance, professional social
workers, and mentor volunteers from local churches to surround a single mother with support. “We do weekly budgeting, life coaching, and mentoring (with our clients),” said Hoffer, who added that the children the organization serves receive help as well. “We help children learn to read and write,” he said. “We focus on building the literacy skills to give (children) the tools they need to succeed.” The Ephrata shelter can accommodate a woman and her children from six months up to two years, giving the family the time necessary to secure affordable housing. Hoffer added that unfortunately about 60 to 70 percent of the families living in the shelter have fled abusive situations. “Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among women nationally,” said Hoffer, who added that Good Samaritan receives referrals from local churches that appreciate the shelter because it is safe,

The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club will hold the 17th annual Neffsville Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Manheim Township Community Park, Petersburg Road (Route 722). The event will take place rain or shine. Proceeds will benefit local charities. Last year more than $25,000 was raised for a dozen community organizations. Club event co-chairs Sandra Orndorff and Glenn Walz expect there will be at least 500 show cars of every vintage, make and description. Car owners will compete for a variety of trophies, including Best of Show, RunnerUp Best of Show, People’s Choice Award, Best Customized, Best Interior and Best Survivor. The event will also include live music and dancing. A variety of food will be available, including hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries and funnel cakes. Ice cream will be served from a traditional, old-time ice cream truck. An abundance of collectibles will be available for purchase, along with jewelry, clothing and other paraphernalia. More than 60 door prizes will be given away to both show car owners and spectators. There will be a registration fee for show car owners at the gate; the fee includes lunch. Admission is free for spectators, although a nominal donation is suggested for parking. For more information,

Good Samaritan Services is a private, nonprofit, faith-based organization that is fully dependent on the community for support. “It costs $23 per day per person to provide shelter, food, supplies, and case management services,” said Hoffer. “We pride ourselves on being efficient.”

CV Football Caps 2-1 Non-League Record by Leah Sintic
Buckskin football collided with three nonleague opponents to open their season, capturing two wins and one loss. Heading into last Friday night’s clash with Spring Grove, head coach Gerad Novak set the stage for what needed to be done. “We need to do a better job of putting teams away when we have the opportunity. We need to take advantage of mistakes and capitalize when our defense makes a big play,” elaborated Novak. In Friday’s 26-14 homefield win over Spring Grove, it took some time for the effort to hit the scoreboard, but the Bucks were first to enter the end zone with a second quarter touchdown run in by Keegan Martin. Quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus found Obed Bamungwa for a 42-yard pass for a second touchdown in before the half. Conestoga struck again, this time Stoltzfus found Joe Cardina to give the Bucks a three-touchdown advantage. Spring Grove came to life in the third, retaliating with two completions of their own to end the quarter 20-14, but CV wasn’t done yet and Stoltzfus ran in a touchdown of his own in the fourth to seal the outcome. Two weeks prior, against Penn Manor, the Buckskins got ahead early and held on for a 31-13 victory. Martin drove home the first two
touchdowns, running for a 30-yard completion followed by receiving a second off a 33-yard pass from Bradley Stoltzfus. Stoltzfus crossed into the end zone for the Bucks’ third visit, and then dished to Gavin Horning for a fourth quarter success. CV kicker, Joe Cardina, capped his 4-for-4 PATs with a 36-yard field goal to complete the Buckskin point collection. “We converted plays or came up with a defensive stop in some critical situations,” noted Novak. CV had to swallow their first taste of defeat in a grueling 25-24 loss at New Oxford. Martin ran all three Buckskin touchdowns across the line, and Cardina was once again clutch going three-of-three in PATs and supplying a field goal, but New Oxford’s 13-point fourth quarter was just enough to edge ahead as time expired. “Parker Graff has played extremely well defensively from his outside linebacker position and has made some big plays from his tight end position on offense,” pointed out Novak. “A few of our seniors, Yodhe Desta and Keegan Martin, are rising to the top regarding leadership.” BOYS’ SOCCER It’s been an up and down ride for boys soccer as they have accumulated a 1-2 record in first three games. Lower Dauphin handed the Bucks their second, slim-margined defeat in last Thursday’s 2-1 LD triumph. CV

Conestoga Valley’s Jacquelyn McBride, left, and Christina McBride teamed up to defeat Hempfield’s Brighid Cantwell and Tierney Cantwell, 8-5, at number two doubles to help the Buckskins to a 5-2 Section One win over the host Black Knights last Tuesday.
striker Robbie Krasinski scored CV’s lone goal, marking his sixth of the season. The club picked up their first win in their second matchup which took place last Tuesday, taking down Conrad Weiser 5-1 in front of the Bucks’ home crowd. Attacking early and often, the Bucks netted four unanswered goals in the first half. Krasinski opened scoring with back-to-back connections at the 12 and 16-minute marks. Ethan Bredeman tucked in the third goal a mere five minutes later, and Andrew Wahba struck for the fourth CV blow just before the break. Nick Denlinger kept things rolling,

delivering the fifth and final CV goal at the beginning of the second half. Conrad Weiser struggled to string together momentum, but managed to slip in one goal in the final minutes of the contest, but did little to slow the Bucks down. “First home game night and the boys came out focused and ready to play,” praised head coach Dave Hartlaub. CV’s season opener was a tight battle that tipped 4-3 in favor of Lancaster Mennonite. Despite a Blazers’ goal in the first five minutes of play, the Buckskins rallied to control the middle of the game, with a set of back-to-back goals supplied by
Krasinski that put the Bucks up 2-1 at the halfway mark. Mennonite hit another shot on target to even the score, but Krasinski came through again, securing a hat trick and giving CV a 3-2 advantage. Shifting momentum, Mennonite utilized a well-balanced attack, delivering a one-two punch of two goals in the final 15 minutes for the go-ahead. After the loss, the coaching staff sought to make strategic adjustments and gain valuable experience from the contest. “During training we review a few things about the match and worked our offensive rhythm,” explained Hartlaub. “Each season there is a settling period. The coaching staff is excited by the growth of the returning
players and pleased with some of the new additions.” TENNIS Four matches into the season and the CV tennis squad boasts a perfect 4-0 record. “This group of tennis players are starting to bond rather well,” praised head coach Dale Gregg. “We have had great support for one another. The squad has worked hard in practice and are implementing those key aspects into game and match play.” After taking down Cocalico (6-1), Elizabethtown (7-0), and LampeterStrasburg (4-3), the Lady Bucks got their first taste of league competition and came out on top 5-2 over Hempfield. second half the squad truly caught fire. Morley ended the contest with six goals to her credit and Kendra Wenger also connected with the backboard to round out the scoring. “It took us the first half to work out some problems and the heat slowed us down a bit, but the second half we started to find the back of the cage,” elaborated head coach Kelly Dearolf. “We ended with a victory which is a great way to start the season.” GIRLS SOCCER Win, lose, and draw-all three results could be found in Lady Buckskins opening week of their 2018 season. Saturday’s battle at Central York proved to be a defensive showdown of traded possessions, with neither team willing to budge. After 80 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods neither team had converted a goal and the contest reached a scoreless end. In their prior two games, the girls found themselves on both ends of a 21 final score, falling to Governor Mifflin before reversing the roles to overcome Lower Dauphin by an identical score three days later. Against Lower Dauphin, Gabriella Barone-Graybill put the Lady Bucks on the scoreboard after only six minutes, and Madison Delgado picked up her second goal of the season to put CV up by two before the half. While both teams only registered five clear shots on goal, the Bucks’ success rate made the difference as Lower Dauphin was only able to convert one in the final 10 minutes. The opposite result played out in CV’s season opener, when Governor Mifflin notched a goal in each half and CV was only able to connect for a lone second half goal supplied by Delgado. Looking ahead, CV is slated to face their first league test in this Thursday’s showdown at Warwick. VOLLEYBALL Lady Bucks’ volleyball took two hits to start their season, losing a closely contested first game to Penn Manor followed by a second loss at Ephrata. Despite dropping the first set to Penn Manor, CV fired back to take the next two games before ultimately falling 3-2 in their season opener (25-19, 22-25, 22-25, 27-25, 17-15). With the match decision coming down to a fifth set, CV came out strong, looking ready to claim the comeback victory, but a combination of errors led to a momentum shift in Penn Manor’s favor and they were able to edge ahead for the win. CV’s Savannah Byers produced six aces, Charlize Miller added 20 assists and a pair of blocks, and Maddie Glick contributed 15 digs in the league loss. Two days later the opponent was Ephrata, but the Buckskins reached a similar result. After losing the first set
25-15, CV fired back to take the second 27-25. Miller’s five kills and three blocks boosted the Buckskin surge, but a lowscoring third set (25-12), put all the energy back into Ephrata’s hands for a fourth and final set score of 25-18. CROSS COUNTRY With regular season competition

yet to begin, both cross country teams took part in the Kutztown Invitational meet this past Saturday. The girls’ team placed sixth place out of 32 and the boys were 14th out of 30. Pace setter for the Lady Bucks was Alex Slingluff, who completed the 5000-meter course in 20:56.7 for a ninth-place finish. Also representing
CV in the top 20 was freshman Kylynn Frankford who placed 18th out of the 233 participants. CV’s top three finishers on the boys’ side crossed the finish in a pack with Preston Brubaker (18:26.4), Alex Poli (18:28.5), and Emmanuel Gitonga (18:30.5), claiming spots 56, 58, and 59 out of a pool of 221 contenders.

Friday night the Lady Bucks picked up their second win with a 2-0 defeat over Red Lion. CV only accrued five shots on goal but connected on two of them, one in the first half from Abby Morley, and a second half goal from Sydney Weaver. On the opposite end of the field, CV keeper, Madi Kachel, came up big with four saves to shut out all Red Lion attempts. Wednesday’s showdown with Warwick was a low scoring affair, resulting in a 1-0 Warwick victory. The Warriors managed to slide the lone goal past the Buckskin defenders five minutes into the first half, in an otherwise scoreless contest. Though the Warriors outshot CV 10-4, keeper Brooke Eberly held her ground scooping up nine saves to thwart further Warrior success. Kicking off their season with a decisive 8-0 triumph over Northeastern, the CV club played a quiet first half, jostling for position and notching two goals supplied by Morley and freshman Cassandra Malles, but it was in the

responsibilities of the number one singles position and has a collected a 2-2 singles record and shares a 3-1 doubles record with partner Rachel Eby. Playing in the number two singles slot, Jacquelyn McBride holds an unblemished 4-0 mark, complimented by an identical 4-0 in doubles where she’s paired with her sister, Christina McBride. The team members of Brittany’s Hope are thrilled to have an honored guest who has traveled all the way from Texas to train for and attend the 14th annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Dolly, one of the newest miniature ponies to reside in the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo at the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, has already begun training with caretaker and international award-winning trainer Carl O’Callaghan. Dolly will run the 5K race pulling a cart with her trainer on board to help raise funds for Brittany’s Hope. “Dolly trains five days a week, so she’s pretty fit. We’re very fortunate because we’re here, so we can do the course a few times before the event,” O’Callaghan said. Brittany’s Hope is an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization committed to aiding orphans in crisis and helping special needs children to be adopted into forever families. Brittany’s Hope provides grants to families that are in the process of adopting and has implemented programs in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and
Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, said that the organization has set a fundraising goal of $65,000 for this year’s event. That amount would enable Brittany’s Hope to provide adoption grants for seven children with special needs or help with the construction of a much-needed living residence for up to 28 orphaned children with disabilities in a rural and remote area of northern Vietnam. Sahd said the new residence will provide safe, modern, clean living space and bedrooms and feature adaptive furniture and bathrooms to enable the children to gain independence. A physical therapy room and common area for the children are also planned, and the residence will be staffed by trained professionals who can provide 24/7 medical care and help the youths to develop basic living skills. The Walk of Love, a fun-filled, family-friendly event, will begin at 8:30 a.m. and feature a 5K, a fun walk, games and activities for children, competitions for adults, giveaways, and food. Free face painting, miniature golf, miniature fishing, and pony rides will be among the festivities for children. Folks may also visit the animals that live on the property at the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo. To register for the Walk of Love, interested individuals may visit www.walkoflove.org and
