“Our key words are accessibility, affordability, and adaptability as far as creating Gospel-rich materials and getting them out (to missionaries),” said Tom Luttmann, executive director of Bible Visuals International (BVI), 650 Main St., Akron. In employing those principles, Luttmann emphasized that the message is not compromised.
Stumptown Mennonite Church,
“Jesus Christ - yesterday, today, and forever,” said Luttmann. “How we do what we do has changed, but not the message.” BVI will celebrate 60 years of supplying missionaries around the world with ways of delivering that message at the organization’s annual banquet at Shady Maple Smorgasboard, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Friday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. A gluten-free meal option will be available. A number of speakers will address the gathering, including Luttmann and Jerry Durston, director of Club DJ, headquartered in Saskatchewan, Canada, which holds up to 400
Bible clubs each summer. Elinor Young, a special guest, will share stories of her time serving as a missionary in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, where she helped translate the Bible into the language of the Kimyal people and used BVI literature to help explain the message of the Gospel. Although Young has been ordering materials from BVI for several years, Luttman was first inspired to ask her to speak at a banquet when he saw a video about her life at Lancaster Bible College’s mission week event. The World Team Missions display was showing a video called “Bad Legs,” which was the name the people had for Young in Irian Jaya. “(Young) had polio when she was a little girl,” explained Luttman. “(She

ELANCO Celebrate Recovery is celebrating its second year of ministry on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. As a Christ-centered recovery program, Celebrate Recovery is for anyone who has hurts, hang-ups, or habits that are keeping them from living their best life. A misconception is that Celebrate Recovery is for only those dealing with addictions, but more than 60% of those who attend nationally attend to find healing from life issues such as anger, codependency, eating disorders, broken relationships, resentment, people pleasing, anxiety, or other issues. Every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., volunteers and attendees gather at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, in the Student Life Center. Attendees enjoy fellowship around the dinner table, meet to worship and listen to either a testimony or teaching in the general meeting, and then split into appropriate open-share groups. There are groups for men and women in the areas of recovery (addiction), life issues, food issues, and Newcomers 101, which is designed specifically for first-time attendees and includes a short video and an introduction to Celebrate Recovery. The 12-step, Christ-centered recovery ministry is a discipleship program where everyone is encouraged to serve and give back. There are opportunities to serve and become part of the ministry. Readers who would like to know more about ELANCO Celebrate Recovery may call 717-587-2202, email elanco celebraterecovery@gmail.com, or search for “ELANCO Celebrate Recovery” on Facebook.

During the meeting, Baker and Summers explained briefly how the organization started about two years ago when a woman who was a social worker at a Lancaster hospice wanted to do something for veterans. The woman consulted her mother, and the pair thought making an afghan or quilt would be a good way to honor veterans. Both Baker and Summers signed on to help, and when the founder of the group could not continue running the organization, the duo took over, renaming the organization Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. Each woman who attended the meeting was asked to introduce herself to the others and tell how she became involved. Ronnie
Miller told the group that she quilts and was working with another group called Cradle Stitchers. “I have made 35 quilts for veterans,” she noted. Baker and Summers said that they will keep track of the number of pieces each group member turns in. Barbara Schrodi said that she has been making blankets for veterans for two years. “I find it very relaxing,” she said. “It’s creative, and you’re doing it for a good purpose.” Other members of the group noted that they love to crochet and that making the blankets is a nice pastime. Each of the women brought a recently completed quilt or afghan to be given to a veteran. Each piece incorporated red,

white, and blue in some way. When a blanket is donated, Baker or Summers affixes a label to it that reads: “Thank you for your service to our country. Made for you especially by,” followed by the maker’s first name and final initial and then the group’s name. Each blanket is photographed when it is received, and the photo is placed in an album. The organization now boasts about 35 volunteers, mostly recruited from area churches, but they are always in need of more volunteers who can crochet, knit, or sew. When the organization first began donating blankets, the creations went to one hospice in Lancaster and the Lebanon VA Hospital. Currently, the Stitchers are taking blankets to Ascera Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Serves, and Hospice and Community Care. Group members are grateful for the help they receive from ULTWMA, but they will accept monetary donations and donations of red, white, and blue fabric or yarn, batting, or other material. Readers who would like to donate stitching time, funds, or material to the group may call 717-553-3161 or 484-888-3772.

yet God called her. After completing Bible training, Young went to Indonesia to serve the Kimyal. “What seemed like a physical weakness really illustrated God’s love to the people, said Luttmann, who explained that Bad Legs is a term of endearment. “(The Kimyal told her), ‘We have people (here with disabilities) who aren’t able to leave the valley where we live. How much must God love us that he sends someone with a disability all this way to share the good news of the Gospel?’

Young told Luttmann that BVI materials had been an important aid to her work. “The visual aspect of the ministry helped people understand the concepts, he said. In addition to speakers, people who have been connected to the ministry during its history will join the gathering, and artists and writers who have worked with the organization will be profiled at each table. Luttmann explained that Children’s Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) is a ministry that has been a substantial part of BVI history. Katherine Hershey, who was CEF director in Lancaster, and Mable Ruth Wray, who was CEF director in Harrisburg, are both connected to the origin of BVI, which was founded by area resident Helen Odenwelder. Making materials accessible to missionaries around the world has been an important goal for BVI. Help in accomplishing that feat has been provided by Sam Gunti, who runs large Bible camps in India. Through a special licensing agreement, Gunti is able to print BVI materials for use in his camps. While giving a nod to the past, Luttmann said the program will also look at the present and exploring new avenues God is providing for BVI in ways to adapt materials. “A woman contacted me saying she would like to create a podcast using our stories, he said. “God is giving us an opportunity to reach more children with the Gospel with all the ways we have of communicating today. We are exploring those opportunities, but with the consistent message that there is one way to salvation - through Jesus Christ. BVI is a nonprofit organization overseen by a nine-member board. Readers who would like to attend the banquet may register at www.biblevisuals.org/banquet or call 717-859-1131. There is a nominal cost for those age 4 and up to attend the banquet. Banquet sponsorship opportunities are available. BVI asks those who would like to attend to register by Thursday, Oct. 10.

11:45 a.m., an all-you-can-eat barbecue meal will be served. A variety of grilled meats and sides will be available for a minimum set donation. “Food is important for recovery,” Theurer remarked. He explained that nutrition often goes by the wayside when the craving for addictive substances takes priority. A total of 535 tickets will be available for the barbecue. The meal sold out last year, so readers are advised to purchase tickets in advance by visiting https:// recovery-day-lancaster.ticketleap.com. Children age 7 and under may eat free of charge. Ice cream will be available for purchase. Following the meal, Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace is slated to read a proclamation. The concert will kick off at noon. James Severson from Gatehouse and Rebecca Moyer of RASE Project will serve as the masters of ceremonies. The concert lineup will include Rick’s One-Man Band, Dirt Road Redemption, and Half Past Dead. Supplee noted that the leader of Rick’s One-Man Band has multiple years of recovery, and his unique stage act includes playing a drum, a guitar or banjo, and a harmonica simultaneously while also singing. Dirt Road Redemption, an acoustic rockabilly/punk band, also has ties to addiction recovery. Half Past Dead is a Grateful Dead tribute band. “They put a cool spin on it,” Supplee said of Half Past Dead. “Everyone seems to love (their music) because it’s real chill.” Recovery Day Lancaster/ Recovery Rocks is a child-friendly and pet-friendly event. “I’ve been encouraging families to come,” Theurer said. “Everyone who’s been affected by recovery should come.” Attendees are invited to bring flying discs, footballs, and other outdoor games, as well as lawn chairs and blankets for seating. There will also be organized activities for children, a magician, and balloons. A cornhole tournament will be held for older youths and adults during the afternoon.

“It just made more sense,” Recovery Day Lancaster organizer Scott Theurer said about the merging of the Lancaster County Recovery Alliance event with 521 Club’s Recovery Rocks event. “It’s for the same thing. We do together what we couldn’t do apart.” Last year, the two events took place in September several weeks apart, as September is recognized as National Recovery Month. The organizers of both events recognized that they attracted many of the same people, so they opted to
join forces. The 521 Club, which is a sober club, is now a co-presenter of the new Recovery Day Lancaster/Recovery Rocks. “ We’re bringing the music aspect,” said Matt Supplee, who is the 521 Club’s events coordinator. The grand event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Buchanan Park, 901 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festivities will kick off with what Theurer called Lancaster’s largest serenity circle. Attendees will be invited to recite the Serenity Prayer together as they gather in

Buckskin Booters Battle But Fall Short by Leah Sintic
The CV boys’ soccer team is eager for redemption after a string of three heartbreak losses last week. On Wednesday, the Bucks faced the Warriors, and the teams put in 36 scoreless minutes of competition, before weather postponed the remainder of play, pushing the outcome to Thursday when the Warriors prevailed in a 3-2 overtime decision. Unlike the previous evening, both teams swiftly opened scoring, alternating four goals in rapid succession to propel the game into overtime. Kyle Thrush and Owen Linder put in CV’s two goals, but unfortunately no one was able to connect in the extra minutes, and Warwick sealed the outcome with a third goal. On Monday, CV slipped, 2-1, against Manheim Township, and found themselves playing catchup after Township tucked in their first goal at the eight-minute mark. “We had moments in the first half to put more pressure on Township, but we made a few errors that gave them momentum which they converted into goals,” acknowledged head

rallied to put some additional pressure on the Blue Streaks in the second 40, resulting in a free kick success from Andrew Wahba to slice the lead in half. “The second half we came out more aggressive and put relentless
“Andrew played a solid free kick,” he continued. “As coaches, we are always asking players to put the ball on frame; he did, and put us in a good position to get a result, but time ran out.” CV’s defensive lineup put in a solid second half performance, denying Township the opportunity to add to their lead. A similar story transpired the previous Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Wilson, where the Bucks were down and facing a shutout, until the final minute of play. Wahba again came through with a goal to get the Bucks on the scoreboard. “We love the fight within the squad,” added Hartlaub. “Each day we pick up more on how to compete at this level, and over time, we will put together 80 minutes where we will be very difficult to break down.” FOOTBALL There was no shortage of action on the gridiron when CV football traveled to Spring Grove, September 6th, with both teams putting points on the board in all four quarters, but the Bucks fell just short in the 42-39 final. The teams traded possessions and points in rapid succession with each team visiting the end zone six times, but the story ultimately came down to the extra point conversions, with Spring Grove’s kicker producing a perfect run of six PATs. CV gained 531 yards compared to Spring Grove’s 338, and also earned 30 first downs compared to Grove’s 10. “Offensively we doubled Spring Grove’s output, but that doesn’t guarantee a victory,” stated head coach Gerad Novak. CV quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus put up some impressive numbers in the loss, passing 276 yards, including touchdown passes to Zach Fisher (21 Photo by Mark Palczewski yards), and Derek Ulishney (11 yards), Conestoga Valley’s Caden Wanger wins a head ball over Man- as well as running in two of the Bucks’ heim Township’s Gabe Silva during the Buckskins’ 2-1, Section six touchdowns during the fourth period. One loss to the host Blue Streaks last Monday.
“He [Stoltzfus] made excellent decisions with the football, both running and passing the ball, and our offensive line played very well,” praised Novak. “It puts a great deal of pressure on him, but that pressure goes along with being the quarterback. Good players thrive on pressure situations and find a way to play above their expectations.” Booper Johnson ran in the other two CV touchdowns, racking up 23 carries, and 134 rushing yards. Johnson was also effective in the passing game grabbing 5 receptions for 51 yards. Fisher led the team in receptions, with 8, totaling 97 receiving yards. “We keep stressing every play matters,” summarized Novak. “We must always be moving towards perfection if we are going to win football games.”
FIELD HOCKEY Field hockey picked up two more league wins last week to improve their league record to an untarnished, 3-0 (5-1 overall). Wednesday, it was the Black Knights of Hempfield that buckled, 4-1, under the Buckskin pressure. Though the halftime score registered an even 1-1, the Bucks dominated the contest, outshooting the Knights 23-1, and found three additional successes in the latter half. Elli Livingston (1 goal, 2 assists) connected with the backboard in the first, but Hempfield put in the equalizer three minutes later. Claire Ortiz upped the intensity in the second half giving CV back-toback goals, and Carli Eberly put the icing on the cake with CV’s fourth and final goal just before time ran out. Last Monday, persistence was everything, in a 1-0 overtime
takedown of Manheim Township. CV outshot the Blue Streaks, 14-2, and were finally rewarded with the contest’s lone goal, 37 seconds before the extension expired. “It really showed their mental toughness,” celebrated head coach Kelly Dearolf, “We were really proud of their effort.” Despite peppering Township’s keeper with shots, the scoreboard remained unaltered after regulation play, but tenacity prevailed when Livingston connected a shot, assisted by Eberly, to seal the outcome with mere seconds left to play. “Our starters played a full game, and then a full overtime period,” added Dearolf. “Everyone was tired, but they did not let that stop them from finishing strong.” TENNIS Girls tennis experienced their first setback last week, getting knocked down in a 7-0 loss to Manheim Township, sandwiched between triumphs over Altoona (3-2) and Warwick (7-0), giving them an impressive overall record of 8-1. Against Altoona, CV won the match by sweeping the singles events, with Jacquelyn McBride, Rachel Eby, and Sophia Steed representing the squad. Wednesday’s 7-0 loss to Township ended CV’s undefeated streak. Both teams were undefeated headed into the showdown, but only Township left with their flawless record intact. In Monday’s 7-0 sweep over Warwick, all four singles athletes, McBride, Eby, Steed, and Ellie Kready, won their matchups in identical straight sets (6-0, 6-0). The remainder of the work was done in doubles play with wins from Nina Kramer and Jessica Chen (8-4), Kaila Burkholder and Alexcis Johns (8-0), and Jenna

Rychener and Megan Rychener (8-2). GOLF With only two returning members, CV golf has a young club this season, full of potential and high hopes for the future. The crew is still in the hunt for their first team win this season, yet is focusing on individual achievements, worth ethic, and team unity. “They have all been working to learn the basics of the game, and have all competed in at least two matches,” head coach Matthew Brubaker pointed out regarding his eight first-year members. Freshman standout Carson Hoover has led the team in all match performances, carding a personal and team season best 89 at Par Line Golf Course, and then repeating that success with a matching 89 at Honeybrook Golf Course. As the 2019 golf season winds down, the team will graduate one senior, Jack Laser, whose contributions to the team dynamic will be missed, but with all other players expected to return next season, the potential for future growth is an exciting prospect. CROSS COUNTRY Buckskin girls cross country split results in last week’s dual meet, falling behind host Manheim Town-
ship, but gaining a team win over Lebanon. Kylynn Frankford blazed the way for the CV crew, turning in the day’s second-best time of 21:48. Brittany Johns crossed in fifth (21:59), Kayla Mongiovi took eighth (22:09), and Kate Kmieczak (23:13) and Emily Castronova (23:15) were just steps apart in 13th and 14th place respectively. In addition to getting the first team win in the books, the squad finished in a collective sixth place at the Kutztown Invitation the previous weekend, thanks to some strong performances from top harriers. Frankford cruised her way to a 10th place finish in the pool of 213 participants, clocking a 20:42.30, a new personal best time. “Kylynn ran an outstanding race,” praised head coach Mark Amway pointing out Frankford’s improvement from last year’s 18th place finish. Mongiovi produced the next best time for CV, with a 22:05 (37th), and Johns clocked a 22:37 (79th). The CV boys suffered two losses in the Tuesday league meet, falling behind Manheim Township and Lebanon. The highlight of the meet came from Emmanuel Gitonga, a sophomore, who put up the second fastest individual time, crossing in 17:05, just

behind Township’s Tyler Stevens (17:03). Gitonga also produced a solid race in Kutztown, 17:47.9, good enough for 22nd place out of 242, shaving 50 seconds off of his race time from the same event in 2018. Jesse Kanagy’s 18:40 took 79th in the Invitational. “We still have a couple kids injured, but on the mend-moving in the right direction,” emphasized Amway. GIRLS’ SOCCER After dropping a 1-0 loss to Central York to open league play on September 7th, CV girls’ soccer rebounded with a pair of league wins last week, overtaking Warwick and Manheim Township. CV’s Adrianna Neiman put in a goal after only nine minutes on the field in Thursday’s home match against Warwick, a lead that held until 10 minutes before the end of regulation, when Warwick’s Juliette Delmotte placed the equalizer. Gearing up for overtime, the Bucks put the pressure on, opening the door for sophomore Delainey Varela Keen to net the golden goal, her first of the season, and walk away with the win. Madison Delgado had a standout day against Manheim Township last Monday, leading the CV club to their first of the two league victories, securing a brace as well as being the only player on either squad to score in the 2-0 triumph. Delgado put in her first goal just before the half, giving Conestoga the 1-0 edge, and followed it up with a second success netted 13 minutes into the second half. VOLLEYBALL Volleyball split their results last week taking down McCaskey, but falling to Hempfield, leaving their overall record similarly split, 2-2. Thursday night the Bucks were led by aggressive play from Savannah Byers who attacked the Tornados with nine kills and seven aces. The first set displayed a close match with the Bucks edging ahead to a 25-20 win, but once they got their momentum churning, there was little chance for McCaskey to retaliate, and the Buckskins took sets two and three by identical scores of 25-9. Charlize Miller set up the offense with 25 assists, and Rebecca Hartranft supplied a block. In the Tuesday match against Hempfield, the tide turned 3-0 in favor of the Black Knights, sporting nearly identical set scores (25-13, 2513, 25-15). CeCe Leininger was all over the floor for CV, nailing 7 kills, 2 aces, and defending with 3 blocks in the loss.

building is located behind the main building. “This will be the lobby,” said Mitchell Hanna, director of marketing, as he began to lead the first tour along the hallway of the ground-level floor. Hanna pointed out the area where a small library and mailboxes will be located. “Where this hallway bends, there will be a coat rack,” added Hanna, noting that a hallway will connect the new apartments to the existing Wheat Ridge personal care wing. When the organization broke ground for the building on July 23, Fairmount president/CEO Jerry Lile noted that the effort was a response to surveying the needs of potential residents. Each apartment in the building will correspond to one of 11 different floorplans. Hanna described the ones that visitors could see on the ground floor. “The first apartment on the right is one bedroom and one bath, and it’s 597 square feet,” said Hanna, who added that the model is called the Bareville. “All the floorplans are named for different towns in the area,” he said, noting that alphabetically, the names run from smallest to largest. The Akron is a studio apartment, whereas the Brownstown is 828 square feet and features a bedroom and den. The Cocalico floorplan, which is more prevalent than any other in the building, is also a one-bedroom with den that offers 865 square feet. The Conestoga is a one-bedroom with den that will give a tenant 875 square feet of space. The Farmersville is a one-bedroom, one-bath that offers 880 square feet. The Hahnstown, which features an L-shaped layout, is the most unique floorplan in the building, according to Hanna. The Hinkletown is a 955square-foot bedroom with a den model, and the Murrell boasts more than 1,000 square feet with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Like the Murrell, the Talmage offers more than 1,000 square feet, and the Voganville is 1,400 square feet. The first floor of the building
