HHudson Rice has a heart for helping

udson Rice likes toys as much as any 10-year-old does. But Hudson dislikes homelessness more than he likes toys.

Hudson, a fourth-grader at Smoketown Elementary, is selling toys to aid people experiencing homelessness in the Conestoga Valley area. It’s one of those grassroots initiatives that attracts others because it’s so easy to get behind.

“We were in Chicago when I saw a homeless person for the first time,” said Hudson. “I asked my mom (Melissa Rice) about it and if I could do something. I decided I wanted to do a toy sale. I decided I wanted to sell my toys. It just hurts me to the core to see people without homes. There are homeless people everywhere.”

That was four years ago, and Hudson’s Toy Sale has evolved into a robust community event.

The next edition of the annual toy sale will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Victory Church, 1827 Freedom Road, Suite 103, Lancaster, located within the Greenfield corporate center.

The event will also feature a bake sale, a silent auction,

fundraising games, entertainment, face painting, food and drinks, with all proceeds going to Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS).

“(Hudson’s Toy Sale is) fun and energetic,” said Neal Rice, Hudson’s dad. “Homelessness is a serious issue and a tough issue to think about. But the day of the sale has an atmosphere of the

community coming together.”

Some of the brand-new or lightly used toys that will be available at the sale are Legos, board games, other games and stuffed animals. In addition to helping a great cause, Hudson’s Toy Sale will provide individuals with an opportunity to get in a little early Christmas shopping.

“We’re really proud that he had this idea and that he was willing to put some time and energy into it,” said Neal. “It’s grown beyond what a young child can do himself, but he’s still very engaged in it. Our family and church have really embraced the idea.”

With the financial support of business sponsors like Bank of Bird-in-Hand, Clark Associates and Legacy Law and the work of 40 volunteers, including Hudson’s friends and classmates, this year’s toy sale is well on the way toward its goal of raising $20,000 for homelessness programs at CVCCS. Dennis Steiner is legally blind.

That doesn’t make him any more qualified to be the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of VisionCorps, but it certainly does provide him with a unique perspective and a very specific insight into the organization and its purpose.

“It does give me a perspective that others might not have,” said Steiner. “There are qualities that a CEO must have. But I don’t

think blindness gives me any leadership qualities.”

“My vision tends to fluctuate,” Steiner continued. “I don’t drive a car. I take the bus to work and usually catch a ride home or use Uber. I use assisted software on my computer (to read). If I’m reading for extended periods of time, I use audiobooks. For me, I grew up with vision loss. I don’t think of my vision loss as who I am. It’s something I deal with.”

The agendas of active people tend to fluctuate with the seasons.

At Faith Church during autumn, members enjoy community involvement, the laughter of children and seeing the fruits of their labors. Members of the church’s outreach team take all those sorts of activities, sprinkle them with love and charity and call them Faith Church’s Fall Fest.

“Summer has wound down, and the kids have gone back to school,” said Heather Leicy, who’s been a member of Faith Church’s outreach team for seven years. “You can get into a routine, but this changes things up for a day. That cool weather invites people to come out and enjoy time together. Everyone just loves the fall.”

Located at 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, Faith Church will conduct its third annual Fall Fest on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. With an old-school,

the blind and visually impaired. It seeks to enrich the lives of those who have experienced sight loss through preventative, rehabilitative, educational and employment programs and services.

“Our mission is to empower individuals with vision loss to attain independence,” said Steiner. “If people are experiencing vision loss, they should reach out. I think people need to recognize that vision loss is not the end of the world. People can live successful lives, happy lives and continue to do the things they like to do. We can have a very positive impact on people’s lives.”

VisionCorps serves about 1,500 people annually, 75% of whom are over the age of 65. VisionCorps also administers 10,000 vision tests to preschool students in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, Adams and Chester counties each year.

“I don’t think everyone is aware of the opportunities that are available (through VisionCorps),” said Steiner. “Based on census data, we know there are more people out there who

could benefit from our services. Some people are reluctant to reach out, and I think part of it is fear. I don’t think anyone accepts vision loss. We like to call it adjustment.”

VisionCorps employs about 200 people in Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, as well as in Little Rock, Ark., and about half of those individuals are visually impaired.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

“Those of us who are vision impaired have a saying; ‘The only things we can’t do is drive a car or fly a plane, but give us the keys and we’ll try,’” said Steiner. “People say, ‘I can’t read the newspaper anymore.’ But there are a couple of ways around it. Part of our job is to teach people how to use those services.”

VisionCorps began its mission in 1926 and went through a number of name changes before settling on its current one.

“One of my staff came up with the name VisionCorps. It’s like the Peace Corps focused on vision,” said Steiner. “A lot of the organizations for the blind started in the early 1900s. We had a lot of vets returning from World War I experiencing vision loss. VisionCorps was started by a group of women who wanted to help those folks. Our focus is not about taking care of people but giving them the skills to take care of themselves and be independent so they can start families, build houses and earn sustainable wages.”

community-day feel to it, the event will be filled with food, fellowship, games and especially fun.

The event is free to attend, and some concessions will be made available for purchase.

“Our goal is just to bring the community together and allow families to have time together and hopefully have everyone meet new people,” said Leicy. “It’s the best kind of fun, and it’s not completely organized fun. It’s just a light-hearted vibe. It’s filled with laughter, and it’s a relaxing atmosphere.”

Faith Church’s Fall Fest will feature a food truck, hot dogs, wings, cotton candy, popcorn and drinks. The event will include children’s games, offering opportunities to earn tickets to win prizes, as well as a three-legged race, an egg-andspoon race, a sack race, a whoopie pie-eating contest, a tractor ride and a candy drop by the Lafayette Fire Company.

In addition, the church will collect nonperishable food items for Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS). CVCCS will have an information booth set up at the event, as will Conestoga Valley SEEDS and Blessings of Hope.

Fall Fest will conclude with 30 minutes of worship songs starting around 5 p.m.

“I really like the whoopie pie-eating contest,” said Leicy. “I like watching the kids do it, but my favorite part is when the parents do it. They just let their guards down and have fun. I also like helping

Banquet to raise funds for scholarships

Lancaster Friends of Meserete Kristos Seminary (Ethiopia) will hold its annual fundraising banquet on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand.

The banquet will include the option of authentic Ethiopian food - injera and wat - or American fare. Admission is free, although an offering will be received to benefit MKSeminary located in Bishoftu, Ethiopia.

The featured speaker will be Bekele Bedada,

at the prize table and having kids come to you with their tickets. You get to see their eyes light up when they get their prizes. It’s like the culmination of the event. It makes all the work worth it.”

About three years ago, Fall Fest replaced Trunk or Treat as Faith Church’s most ambitious community outreach event of the year. Faith Church also hosts a Wednesday community night each month when local folks are treated to an evening meal and activity.

“When someone drives past Faith Church, we don’t want them thinking, ‘Oh, that’s another church,’” said Leicy. “We’re like you. We are part of the community. We want to reach out to people and form relationships. We want to reach out to people and let them know we’re here. If you need support, we’re here for you.”

Hudson’s Toy Sale

Hudson’s Toy Sale raised $14,000 for CVCCS, which represented a significant jump from the $4,000 raised in 2022 and the $2,000 Hudson raised during the first year of the sale, when the event was held in the Rices’ backyard.

“We were expecting to raise $20,” said Hudson of that first toy sale. “People just found out about it, and they started spreading the word and helping out. My friends came, and we raised $2,000. Now all of my friends help me because they care about homeless people too. It makes me feel really good inside because they want to help the homeless.”

According to Conestoga Valley SEEDS, the Conestoga Valley School District community has the second-largest homeless population in Lancaster County. During the 2023-24 school year, 172 children in the school district were considered homeless.

“Hudson is the kind of kid who just loves people,” said Neal. “When he sees people who are hurting, it resonates with him and drives him to want to help. We’re proud of him for that. He’ll literally give you the shirt off his back.”

Maggie Spike Trio sets concert

The Maggie Spike Trio will perform on Sunday, Sept. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Weather permitting, the performance will be held outdoors, and audience members are encouraged to bring folding chairs. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted.

The Maggie Spike Trio features married couple Eric “Spike” and Peggy “Maggie” Gernerd, both of whom are singer-songwriters. In addition to performing in the trio, they sometimes perform as a duo. Eric first picked up the acoustic guitar to play the songs of musicians

such as Neil Young and Bob Dylan. He later delved more deeply into American and world folk music. Peggy, inspired by vocalists such as Carole King and Joni Mitchell, wrote her first song at 18. She later learned more about her Irish ancestry and Celtic music, and some of her musical creations reflect both Celtic and jazz influences.

Eric and Peggy joined with percussionist Henry Patterson to form the trio, which performs original songs in the American folk, Celtic, jazz, and world rhythm genres. At the Eicher event, the group will also play covers of other composers’ songs in those genres.

Church sets community meal

In addition to providing vocals and percussion, Maggie plays the guitar and ukulele, and Spike plays the guitar, banjo, and Irish bouzouki. The percussion instruments featured include the Irish bodhran, African djembe, Spanish castanets, Middle Eastern dumbek, Afro-Cuban bongos,

and Latin American cabana and shakere, along with musical washboards, spoons, and wood blocks. The Maggie Spike Trio’s world rhythm music features calypso, reggae, Mediterranean, Afro-Cuban, African, Brazilian, and Middle Eastern influences.
