Peter Fenton shares CV-nurtured talents with the world

When he was a student at Conestoga Valley Middle School (CVMS), Peter Fenton played a prominent role in a school play. Fenton thought he could write a better script than the one being used for the play, so he wrote the comedy adventure “Good Knight and Goodbye.”

A number of years later, while attending Wheaton College, Fenton was contacted by his former CVMS English teacher and play director Sue Fisher, asking him to write a play script commemorating her upcoming retirement. In response, Fenton wrote the comedy adventure “The Thousand Year Rose.”

It was a series of events that continues to shape Fenton’s life as a playwright, a screenwriter, a producer and a director. Now 29 and living in New Hope, Fenton is trying to “make it” - whatever that looks like - in a demanding industry.

“I’ve been going into the professional (scriptwriting) world,” said Fenton. “Over the last eight years, it feels like the Earth has shaken, but in small, incremental steps. I’m following the momentum and trying to figure out what’s next. But I know there’s nothing else I’d want to do with my life.”

To this point of his career, Fenton has penned six stage plays and three movie scripts. The 2013 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School is currently working on his seventh stage script and his fourth film.

A production of Fenton’s dark comedy and drama “Abandon All Hope” made its off-Broadway debut in New York City in June. He has also gained acclaim for his psychological thriller “Night Voices” and his family drama “Inherently Special.”

“I bounce around with a lot of different genres,” said Fenton.

“I write to make people laugh and think. When you can make people laugh, you can make them think. I like to write things I would enjoy watching. I want to leave the world a little better than I found it.”

Fenton noted that there are differences between stagewriting and screenwriting. “The most

Fall Festival is township’s next coming attraction

Almost every new beginning is accompanied by a certain amount of momentum. At this point of its evolution, the East Lampeter Township recreation department is trying to keep that initial flow going.

The recreation department’s upcoming fall festival is a great way to build on that momentum.

“I feel like with anything new you need a year to develop and

grow,” said Lisa Cleveland, who’s four months into her term as the first recreation director in East Lampeter Township. “We’re still just starting out. We want to get through each season of the year and then continue to grow. My primary focus is to program for the community. There’s a lot to do on the back side of these events. At the beginning, it’s about setting the groundwork and finding people in the community who want to help.”

In war on human trafficking, Freedom Walk is step in right direction

Walking is good, healthy exercise. Walking with someone can be even better. Walking for someone might just be the very best.

Hope Inspire Love’s upcoming Freedom Walk aims to raise money for victims of human trafficking and bring awareness to a continuing societal problem.

“We’re walking with (survivors), and we want to invite others to

walk with us as well,” said Amy Thurston, Hope Inspire Love’s co-founder, president and chief executive officer (CEO) for the last seven years. “When we walk, we’ve seen people cry. It might be walking for someone who can’t walk. When you walk, it brings hope to you and your community.”

Hope Inspire Love’s fifth annual Freedom Walk will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Musser Park,

All are invited to share in the service of worship and praise, which will be followed by a fellowship time in the adjacent church parlor.

The church is located at the corner of Manor and West Strawberry streets in Lancaster, with parking available in the lot behind the church on Lafayette Street.

Freedom Walk

135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. The 2-mile silent walk through the city of Lancaster will begin and end at Musser Park and will take participants through the Central Market area and past the downtown government buildings.

Walkers can register for the Freedom Walk at www.hopeinspirelove.org/freedomwalk.

“We are seeing a rise in the need,” said Thurston. “If we can bring awareness to our community, we can prevent this from happening to our children. Some people can’t believe this is happening in our backyard. Now the question becomes, ‘What are we going to do about it?’”

“I feel people are becoming more aware because we’re finally talking about it,” Thurston added. “People realize it’s affecting their community. People are reaching out, and we’re getting more invites from other nonprofits. Hope Inspire Love has been getting into the community even more, and that’s the beauty: It takes a village for what we do. We love telling the survivors that the services are free because the community is behind their journey.”

The Freedom Walk will also feature an informational survivors’ tent that relays the personal stories of individuals who have been affected by human trafficking.

“This walk is for everyone,” said Thurston. “People do it with their dogs. We see church groups,

university students, local nurse groups, local businesses will create teams, donors and partners. Some survivors show up. Some people have been doing it for five years. It shows the dedication of the community to our cause. It’s people getting uncomfortable, showing up and walking. It can empower people.”

Organizers of the Freedom Walk are hoping that 500 individuals will participate and that the event will raise about $50,000 for Hope Inspire Love’s survivor services. Hope Inspire Love, which is headquartered at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, also conducts a fundraising gala in April.

“We heard about the concept of a freedom walk and thought it was something tangible we could do in Lancaster County,” said Thurston of the 2019 founding of the event.

“We took a global concept and made it local. What was neat was having people join us in the mission. Now it has evolved into this beautiful community interaction.”

Thurston and husband Steve Thurston founded Hope Inspire Love in 2017. The local nonprofit employs six workers, contracts work from two others and has trained 26 volunteer mentors who have been matched with survivors.

Some of the services Hope Inspire Love offers include trauma-informed mentorship, prevention education and programs related to outreach and awareness.

Wise women of CPWBS still seek Him

It started as a daughter-mother spat, as a way to mend fences, as a way to come together on common ground. It has evolved into something very few humans could’ve imagined.

Change of Pace Women’s Bible Study (CPWBS) has seen a lot of water flow under its bridge over

Fall Festival

The recently launched East Lampeter Township recreation department will conduct its inaugural Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon at East Lampeter Township Community Park, 2330 Hobson Road, Lancaster. The event is designed mostly for kids ages 2 to 12.

“I envision families coming, having a good time and meeting other people,” said Cleveland. “I also see it as a way of promoting what’s going on with the East Lampeter Township recreation department. You want kids to be active and to learn about the parks. We have these parks which are beautiful resources, and this is the perfect complement to them. Our public works department does a great job of keeping up with the parks. They’re very well-manicured.”

East Lampeter Township recreation department’s Fall Festival will feature pumpkin painting, leaf crafts and other crafts, a scavenger

hunt, face painting and other fun things for kids to do. The kids’ activities are free.

For adults, the fest will include a Kokedama workshop that explores the Japanese art of growing plants in a moss-covered ball. There is a fee involved with the Kokedama workshop.

In addition, Conestoga Valley SEEDS will host an information booth.

“Generally, the weather in the fall is better than the summer,” said Cleveland. “It’s the end of the growing season, and you’ve got beautiful fall foliage. The days are shorter, and kids are back in school with their friends. This is an opportunity to have fun and do something different. I’m sure there will be people making fun memories.”

Since its inception in late May, the recreation department has hosted family movie nights, group yoga sessions, a hero hangout with first responders, a meet-and-greet

with Olympic medalist Casey Kaufhold, a touch-a-truck event and a fall centerpiece workshop. Currently in the works are a walking club, a community garden and a summer playground program.

“It’s been very positive so far,” said Cleveland. “The community is responding very well to the events. I’ve only heard positive feedback, and I think the community wants more programs they can participate in. I want to program to what they want.”

East Lampeter Township is home to 17,800 residents.

“You can’t start everything at once,” said Cleveland. “You’ve got to build on what you’ve got. We want people to tell their friends. We need to get more exposure, so people understand we have these programs for them.”

founder. “We didn’t get along, and I couldn’t deal with it anymore. So we asked, ‘What can we do to bring us together?’ It’s been a bonding of God’s words, and (the women have) been there for each other to depend on. We’re there for anyone who comes in. It’s just a beautiful place; there’s love and hugs and tears and crying, and the women leave rejoicing. We’re known for connecting in our fractured world.”

On Thursday, Sept. 26, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., CPWBS will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding with a special meeting at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster. The nondenominational group will present author Julie Clinton, the founder of Extraordinary Women Ministries, which seeks to draw women closer to God, and three study offerings - “Me, Myself and Lies,” “Your Beautiful Purpose” and “Blessed Are the Chosen.”

“(CPWBS) is a place where women are not alone,” said Fisher. “It’s a sisterhood, and they can become friends. When we help others, our hearts are open to healing. We share our struggles with each other. If we have our prayers answered, we just rejoice. It’s very private and not a very gossipy place at all. It’s just a powerful serenity.”

CPWBS, which meets every Thursday morning from September to April at Lancaster Alliance Church, is a sisterhood of about 150 female attendees. They hail from all walks of life and from various parts of Lancaster County, from Manheim Township to Elizabethtown, from Strasburg to Ephrata.

“Some women leave their Thursdays open to feed their souls,” said Fisher, a resident of Bent Creek.

important thing in movies is what you see; in stage plays, the most important thing is what you hear,” he said. But both types of scriptwriting demand great attention to detail in every aspect of the story, from the plot to the dialogue, from the action to the message.

“You’re telling a story. You’re figuring out how to tell a story from start to finish,” said Fenton. “You are telling a story that’s driven by dialogue and driven by action. But it takes a village to bring it to life. I have my words. I have my ideas. I have actions. But it’s up to the director and actors to bring it to life. With some productions, I’m very involved with bringing them to life. With some, I’m not.”

At this point of his career, about 30% of Fenton’s income originates from his writing. He has and has had a number of day jobs and side gigs, including teaching, marketing and waiting tables.

“My career works for me, but it’s not anything I’d wish on anyone,” said Fenton. “I’m not making a living at it yet, but each year I’m getting closer.”

“The most important thing is engaging with people,” Fenton continued. “I don’t want anyone to ever forget that I’m a person too. It’s just about me being myself.”

Zook art auction planned

An auction featuring 3D artworks by Amish twin brothers Aaron and Abner Zook will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the PA Auction Center, 1141 Wea Wit St., East Earl. A total of 22 pieces will be sold. Guests may enjoy hors d’oeuvres and refreshments starting at 5 p.m. before the auction begins at 6 p.m. All items will be offered with no reserve and will sell to the highest bidder regardless of price.

The auction will feature a portion of the collection belonging to James Binsberger, an avid collector of Abner’s work. Even after the auction, Binsberger will still retain one of the largest collections of Abner’s artworks. People may preview the artworks during business hours on Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In addition to Aaron and Abner, featured artists in the exhibit will be Aaron’s son Abe Zook; Abner and Aaron’s cousin Joel Zook; Jose Lacera, who worked for Abner for six years; Mary Sensenig; Lorraine Reiff and Erma Hoover.

Notable pieces in the collection include depictions of Lancaster Central Market, the Soudersburg covered bridge, and the Clinton Mill in Clinton, N.J.; 13 primary sketches that led to the final 3D artworks by Aaron and Abner; and a handcrafted Conestoga wagon and horse-drawn plow by Joel.

“They’re all different; everyone has a different personality. But I treat everyone with respect. The pain that these women come to me with, if I don’t know how to deal with it, I turn it over to God. You wouldn’t believe how many of these women don’t have a church. They come in to be healed.”

“Our pace in the real world demands our time,” Fisher continued. “Unless we set aside time for God, we’ll go off to places where life is not for God. I thought it would be great to name it Change of Pace.”

The women of CPWBS regularly deal with all sorts of life challenges, including raising children, abuse, spousal difficulties, mental health issues and physical limitations.

“(The Bible) has all the truth in it, and the truth will set us free,” said Fisher.

At the start, CPWBS began meeting at Indian Springs Golf Club in East Hempfield Township, now Four Seasons Golf Club. The group has been meeting at Lancaster Alliance Church for the better part of the last 35 years.
