Auction, Kids’ Camp Bonanza Set At Woodcrest By Ann Mead Ash

RUMMAGE SALE

“My favorite time of the auction is when we auction off the special projects,” said Cliff Martin, executive director at Woodcrest Retreat. “It is humbling to have people bid just to support the ministry with nothing to show for it but a tax-deductible receipt.” Martin noted that this year bidders will have the opportunity to donate funds for two special projects if they attend the annual benefit auction and Kids’ Camp Bonanza, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, beginning at 9 a.m. “This year we have trees and shrubs to finish the Indian Rock Center project and two golf carts to replace the two (we have) that are over 20 years old,” said Martin, who added that organizers hope to raise $5,000 for each special project.

For this year’s live auction, organizers have gathered a variety of items to sell to the highest bidders, including two gift certificates toward orthodontic services, a new gas grill, an ice cream maker, home décor, fall plants, tools, and loaves of homemade bread. Gift certificates will be sold on a cash-and-carry basis throughout the day, with remaining certificates auctioned at 2 p.m. Kids’ Camp Bonanza activities will begin at 9 a.m., allowing parents time to enjoy the auction while their children take part in various activities at rotating stations. Martin noted that children will be able to take part in slingshot and archery activities, visit the animals at the camp’s Nature Shack, launch rockets, paint pumpkins, and more. Competitions will include a gelatin-eating challenge at 11 a.m. In the afternoon, the camp ballfield will be the site of several carnival-style games. See Woodcrest pg 2

Finding Hope By Ann Mead Ash

This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing with mental illness.” See Prayer Service pg 3

Preparing for the Woodcrest Retreat benefit auction and Kids’ Camp Bonanza are (from left) Maleah Mabry, Mason Mabry, summer camp director Adam Fox, and Theodore Zook. The annual fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, beginning at 9 a.m.

A bounce house and a barrel train ride will be on-site. There is a nominal charge to participate in the afternoon games. It is a tradition at Woodcrest to auction baked goods. Children who attend the event are encouraged to enter a baked good - such as a cookie, a cookie bar, a pie, or a cake - which will be judged for prize money. At 11:30 a.m., the sweet treats will be auctioned. The special baked goods sale gives children who attend camp at Woodcrest a way to help support the ministry. The event will feature a variety of food items throughout the day. Breakfast items, including pancakes, sausage, and quiche, will be sold beginning at 8 a.m. Bidders who register prior to 8:45 a.m. will receive a free cup of coffee and a doughnut. Foods that will be available for purchase in the food tent during the day will

include chicken barbecue meals, baked potatoes with toppings, hot dogs, french fries, baked goods, beverages, and more. The annual benefit auction attracts hundreds of visitors. Funds raised by the auction are used to offset expenses and help keep camp fees affordable for families. All families that send their children to Woodcrest will benefit from the fundraiser. Woodcrest is a nonprofit organization that provides yearly summer camp experiences for more than 1,400 children on 110 acres of woodland. A family campground and year-round retreat facility are also available. Readers who would like to donate to the auction may call 717-738-2233. Donations will be accepted until the day of the auction. More information about the camp may be found at www.woodcrestretreat.org.

can initiate it, and when to use it. “She will help people understand that process,” said Myers, who noted that Campanella has been well received as a past speaker. Dr. Susan Cabouli, a psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience, will speak about practical tips for finding hope, including an explanation of the LEAP method developed by Dr. Xavier Amador. LEAP stands for ListenEmpathize-Agree-Partner, and the method is designed to help a caregiver gain the trust of a patient. LEAP involves empathizing without judgment. Loice Byler, founder of a ministry that helps those who struggle with anxiety and depression, especially women, will share her personal story of being a mental health consumer, including her acceptance and denial of treatment in the past. “She has seen a difference in her life when she has accepted treatment,” said Myers. “We thought that would be a good viewpoint to share.” Myers added that Byler will also offer practical tips and words of hope. Each year, organizers choose theme verses for the observance. This year’s verses include Psalm 33:22, which reads, “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Another theme verse is Hebrews 10:23, which reads, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Myers reported that the service will include congregational prayer, reading of the Scripture, and time for small group prayer as requested. There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. Readers who have questions may call 717-390-4891 or 717-285-5596.

Cathi Myers, who has long provided leadership for the event, which will celebrate its 10th observance this year, echoed Didden’s comments. “We want to bring hope to people and help them find hope,” she said, noting that the theme of the 2018 service will be “When People With Mental Illness Don’t Want Help: Finding Hope.” “This topic is so relevant,” said Myers. This year’s service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Sponsoring ministries include No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM) and Faith Friendship Ministries. Assisting with the event is Minds Renewed, which meets at Calvary Church and is a division of Handi-Vangelism Ministries in Ephrata. Members of the organizing committee include Myers and Didden, as well as Clara Ames, executive director of NLAM, and Vicki Bollman, a volunteer with Minds Renewed. A number of experienced speakers will give presentations at the event. Dr. Karla Campanella, a family doctor and a missionary who is now a psychiatrist in the Philhaven system, will speak on the topic “Involuntary Commitment or 302.” Campanella will delve into what involuntary commitment involves, who

Grapevine,” which was a hit record for Gladys Knight and the Pips and later for Marvin Gaye. Adding their talents to Mitch Mohler’s are vocalists Lori McCarty and Olivia Marstellar, Rich Fitz on keyboards, Howard Boots on saxophone, Alex Stewart on drums, Tom Day on bass and Dan Palaferro on guitar. Dean Weaver, sound man, also joins in on the guitar. Marstellar and McCarty began singing with the Moodswings about five years ago. Their contributions have grown in importance according to Mohler, and sometimes he refers to the band as Mitch and the Moodswings and the Marstellar McCartiettes. Mohler grew up in Denver in Lancaster County. He was inspired to pursue a musical career when he saw the Beatles perform on Ed Sullivan’s television show. The Sept. 30 show is part of the 2018 series of Sunday afternoon entertainment events at the historic Eicher House. The events are free and open to the public. Weather permitting, the Moodswings will perform on the Eicher Center’s deck. Attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs to the show. Refreshments will be provided. Donations to the Eicher Arts Center Inc. will be accepted.

There is not much good news when it comes to pancreatic cancer, but the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is making strides to change that. The national patient advocacy organization has been creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach, and advocacy for a cure since it was founded in 1999. “At one time, no one really knew much about pancreatic cancer,” said Lancaster County resident Jill Snyder, whose husband, Aaron Shiley, died from the disease in December 2010. “That has changed in recent years, and today there are so many great resources.” Pancreatic cancer has surpassed breast cancer to become the third-leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, and the five-year survival rate is still in the single digits at 9 percent. Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer death largely because there are no detection tools to diagnose the disease in its early stages when surgical removal of any tumors is still possible. To improve those odds, PanCAN has launched an initiative, “The Vision of Progress: Double Pancreatic Cancer Survival by 2020,” with the goal of raising $200 million by 2020. With more funding support and focus, progress and patient outcomes can be significantly improved, organizers said. Pancreatic Cancer Month will be observed in November, and PurpleStride Philadelphia will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. PurpleStride walks are among the largest sources of funding for PanCAN. Locally, a community night fundraiser will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Isaac’s, 1559 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. From 5 to 9 p.m., a percentage of food and beverage purchases will be donated to efforts for PanCAN. The event has been coordinated by Lancaster County resident Randi Jacobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor and captain of the team Ann’s Dream, which was named for Jacobs’ mother, who passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 74. Meal orders for takeout from the Granite Run eatery may be placed online at www.isaacsrestaurants.com using the coupon code FUND. Those who dine in between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. are asked to present a fundraiser form to their servers. The forms may be obtained by emailing

A pair of league losses might not have been the outcome the Lady Buckskin volleyball squad was hoping for last week, but they are honing their talent and are on the cusp of exciting times. “Despite losses, we are growing. Working on building confidence in players, trusting each other, finishing games when we’re ahead,” encouraged head coach Dewey Barlow. “Physically we’re a gifted bunch, we just need to be mentally stronger.” The double dose of losses came in a onetwo punch, first falling to Cedar Crest, 3-0, on Tuesday followed by Warwick on Thursday by the same count. Against Warwick, the Buckskins showed tenacity fighting back in the latter sets, refusing to go down easy, (25-13, 25-23, 25-20). “I told the girls after the loss to Warwick, they played really well in the second and third sets,” continued Barlow. “When our team is passing and playing sound defense our setter has plenty of good hitters. CV’s Charlize Miller was responsible for 17 assists to those hitters, and Savannah Byers converted nine kills. Miller also supplied a pair of aces, Lexi

McEvoy was a defensive presence with two blocks, and Maddie Glick chipped in with 11 digs. Against Cedar Crest (25-22, 25-15, 25-17), several CV players had highlights on the stat line. Miller put up 18 assists, CeCe Leininger contributed nine kills along with five digs, and Sol Maldanado fired up three aces. “I know we’re frustrated in losing, but we’ve turned the corner and are competing more in matches. We just need to be a little more consistent,” summarized Barlow. BOYS’ SOCCER CV boys’ soccer knocked in six goals, while allowing five, over the course of their last three contests, earning themselves victories over Penn Manor and Exeter Township, but slipping to Cedar Crest. In Thursday’s exciting 3-2 triumph hosted by Penn Manor, the home team came out hot, nailing their first goal after only a minute on the field. Not to be outdone, the Buckskins took a few moments to gain their footing, but responded with a tally of their own at the 13minute mark, supplied by sophomore Andrew Wahba. The scoreboard registered little change in the second half, as the teams traded possessions, seeking the opening to strike. “We have been searching for the right combination of players and formation,” explained head coach Dave Hartlaub. “We are working hard to understand how we want to defend as a team and then spring into our offense.” Getting all those components to click allowed CV’s Carlos Barbosa Gonzalez to find the back of the net for the golden goal. “Teams are keying on Robbie [Krasinski],” elaborated Hartlaub. “He is a threat and so others are getting more opportunities and Andrew [Wahba] and Carlos [Gonzalez] stepped up big to find the back of the net.” Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Cedar Crest was a setback, but CV looks to implement the lessons learned. “We have shown we can move a ball and play the game at a high level, but at times we have lapses either in concentration or execution which has cost us. We are growing and becoming better,” encouraged Hartlaub. The previous Saturday’s 3-1 win over Exeter Township was an example of those positive moments, and a diverse offense allowed the Buckskins to get ahead in the second half. Neither CV or Exeter altered the score in the first half, but the Bucks caught fire in the sec-

ond forty, methodically taking control. Krasinski broke the goal line first, a mere 60 seconds into the half, followed by Nick Denlinger notching two of his own before time expired. Brock Rennekamp, Ethan Bredeman, and Krasinski each registered an assist in the wellspaced attack, keeping Exeter off-balanced throughout the contest. Though Exeter managed to slip in a goal of their own, CV keeper, Corey Spotts, remained vigilant and gathered seven saves to deter any further Exeter success. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Lady Bucks added a pair of league

shutouts to their credit last week and currently sit on top of L-L Section I with a league record of 3-0-1. One goal was all it took to secure each of their two triumphs, topping both Penn Manor and Cedar Crest by a 1-0 count. Thursday night, CV hosted Penn Manor and sophomore Ana Weiss notched the lone tally at 29 minutes. “She [Weiss] got a lot of playing time last year, so her experience is a benefit for us, and she has been playing well,” praised head coach Keith Nagley. Against Cedar Crest last Tuesday, Madison Delgado netted the one and only goal, striking

PENNYSAVER midway through the second half off a dish from Weiss. Sophomore Alyson Riggle held her ground in goal, scooping up six saves to preserve both shutouts. “We have been able to contain the opponents and limit their chances on goal. Our defensive unit is not very experienced, but they have been getting better every game,” summarized Nagley. TENNIS So far no one has been able to stop the Lady Bucks tennis club, the girls took down all three competitors last week to improve their record to 9-0 overall, 3-0 league. Ending their week with a 7-0 sweep over Penn Manor gave the Lady Bucks their third L-L League win this season. Jacquelyn McBride, in number two singles, holds a flawless 9-0 record, complimented by an 8-0 performance in doubles, most commonly partnered with sister Christina McBride (2-0, 9-0). Thursday night, the team took down Altoona, 4-1, in their only non-league match of the week, and on Wednesday, the Lady Bucks swept all categories overcoming Ephrata 7-0. All four singles competitors, Catherine Scala, J. McBride, Rachel Eby, and Sophia Steed all secured straight set wins. Scala and Eby teamed up for doubles, the McBride sisters were a pair, and Steed gained partner Hannah Kapchinske. All three duos took down their Ephrata counterparts by a score of 8-2. “The girls have established a goal of getting back to the district team competition as well as trying to make the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs,” explained head coach Dale Gregg. “They focus on reaching accomplishments that previous CV tennis teams have done. They want to be that team that can exceed those heights.” FOOTBALL Buckskin football picked up their second consecutive league win last week, hosting Solanco and rising to a 31-27 triumph. Kicker, Joe Cardina, produced a massive effort for CV. Both teams collected four touchdowns apiece, but Cardina’s perfect 4-for-4 PATs and a second quarter field goal from 25 yards made up the additional points necessary for the Bucks to come out on top. “Solanco is a good football team and a difficult team to defend because your players have to be disciplined for four quarters,” credited head coach Gerad Novak. Those four quarters saw plenty of back-and-forth, with neither team allowing the other to jump far ahead.

victory. “Alex ran exceptional up front again. The rest of the girls ran in a pack and knew what they had to do in order to win,” added Amway. “The goal is to continually move the pack up over the next month to be ready for the post season.” The boys side experienced a double loss, struggling to gain footing and dealing with injuries. Nate Grucelski captured second place again with a time of 17:19 and was joined in the top 15 by Dante Velasco’s 10th place (18:58.2) and Alex Poli in 12th (19:12). Two Buckskin harriers were forced to sit out or exit early from the race due to injury with Preston Brubaker and Emmanuel Gitonga both experiencing back issues. “If these two can get healthy we will be a different team at the end of the season,” added Amway. GOLF Experiencing a year with a low count of golfers, two CV athletes continue to sharpen their skills and put forth their best efforts despite facing disqualification in matches due to lack of numbers. Junior Jack Laser and freshman

Will Mikus are both new to the Buckskin golf club-but they are shouldering the weight of keeping it going. “I am impressed by the players’ willingness to keep showing up, despite knowing that the team is automatically losing each match,” explained head coach Matthew Brubaker. “The guys have certainly improved their skills and have made great strides since the first day of practice and our first match. While the scores might not reflect any of this, I’ve witnessed it as their coach at practices,” he added. Having the tenacity to keep on working and give it their best displays both maturity and strength in the two young golfers-setting an example that provides a life lesson and will reach far beyond the final scores. FIELD HOCKEY Field hockey experienced a bumpy week last week, dropping two contests, Thursday’s 7-0 loss at Penn Manor after a 3-0 defeat when hosting Cedar Crest last Tuesday. Though the Lady Bucks have three wins to their credit, they entered Thursday’s contest against Penn

Conestoga Valley’s Jack Laser posted a round of 125 to top the Buckskins’ card and finish 21st in the individual standings at last Friday’s Section Two match at Tanglewood.

Cardina wasn’t just kicking for CV, he received two touchdown passes from quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus. Keegan Martin also proved to be a pivotal component, running across the two additional Buckskin completions. “Every time Solanco scored, our kids battled back and put points on the board-they never gave up,” praised Novak. They showed great effort, great enthusiasm, great endurance, and great execution. More importantly, they believed they could win the game.” CROSS COUNTRY Eight top fifteen finishers earned the Conestoga Valley girls a double victory last week, topping both Ephrata and JP McCaskey in Ephrata last Monday. “The girls ran really well; it was a full team effort,” praised head coach Mark Amway. Alex Slingluff once again was the pacesetter, claiming a second-place finish with a time of 21:01. Freshman Kylynn Frankford was the second harrier to cross for CV, securing the sixth-place spot in 22:20. Annika Bredeman, Lauryn Hall, Kayla Mongiovi, and Brittney Johns finished in a pack taking spots 8-11 to give the CV squad a major boost in the standings. Kate Kmieczak was 13th and Emily Castronova’s 15th place helped earned CV the double

Manor still searching for their first Section One win, and faced daunting opposition in the Comets who have yet to lose a league matchup. Despite the setbacks, the Lady Bucks head into this week determined to improve against two more league opponents, Warwick and Manheim Township.

freewill offering will be received to support the speaker’s work. Light refreshments will be provided. The speaker will be Lale Labuko, a member of the animist Kara tribe living in the remote Lower Omo River Valley in southwest Ethiopia. Labuko is the founder of the nonprofit Omo Child Foundation. His mission is to end the ritual practice of infanticide called mingi, meaning cursed, among the tribes his region. In the region’s culture, children born with certain abnormalities are designated as mingi, and tribes believe they may cause illness, famine, drought and other difficulties. Based on ancient superstitions, the children are killed by the time they are 1 year old. When Labuko learned of this practice, he challenged the tribal elders and kings. Approximately 15 years ago, parents and others began secretly bringing him children to rescue. He and his wife live at an orphanage that houses approximately 50 children. The film “Omo Child: The River and the Bush” documents Labuko’s efforts to end mingi. The film has won more than 25 awards around the world. Attendees may park in the parking lots across the street from the Moravian Center of Lancaster or in the parking garage on the corner of Chestnut and Queen streets. Parking validation passes will be available for anyone who parks in the garage. For more information, readers may contact the Moravian Center of Lancaster at 717-397-9722.

87th Annual Farmers Fair Planned By Ann Mead Ash

The longevity of the Farmers Day Association Fair, also known as the New Holland Fair, is based, at least in part, on tradition. This year, the agricultural tradition in one local family will be part of the activities as Madison Banbury of Danville, Ohio, serves as the judge for the sheep and goat competitions. Banbury is the granddaughter of Bob Herr, a retired

agriculture educator, founder of Grassland FFA, and R.D. Herr Scholarship Goat sponsor. This year’s fair will be held from Wednesday, Oct. 3, through Saturday, Oct. 6, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. A new tradition for the event, which started last year with a free concert by local performer Sam Schmidthuber, will continue this year with a free concert by Kracker Beez, a classic rock band. The band will take

part in the parade and then will return to the Franklin Street stage on Friday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. The fair will also feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, games, and a variety of food vendors. The fair will kick off on Thursday, Oct. 4, with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. A number of marching bands are scheduled to participate in the parade’s Spectacle of Bands competition, which awards prizes in a number of categories. The 2017 Cup of Honor winner was from Downingtown. The winning band will stop at the judges’ stand to receive the award and then perform for spectators.

At the heart of the fair are the goat, sheep, and swine competitions. When Bill Fisher stepped into the role of president of the Farmers Day Association earlier this year, he did so with plenty of experience in the animal competition. “I have been involved for 45 years working with the animals, and I am the longest continuous volunteer,” noted Fisher. For 2018, animals will be judged in the tents on Fulton Street. Swine will be judged by Levi Geyer on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 5:30 p.m. Goats will be judged at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 4, and sheep will be judged the same day at 4 p.m. The competition is open to 4-H and FFA members from Lancaster County. Raising the animal must be a project the youth has undertaken by himself or herself.

As in the past, a special Kids’ Day will be held on Oct. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. The day will include face painting, balloons, illusions, and more for children. For more than 50 years, the Fireman’s Tugof-War Contest was a popular event at the fair. Last year, the Weaverland Valley No. 1 team took first place. This year, the tug-of-war will not be held, but the pedal power tractor pull for children in age groups from ages 3 to 10 will occur on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. each day at the Franklin Street competition area. On Oct. 6 beginning at 11 a.m., a cornhole tournament will be held in the same area. The double-elimination event will feature teams, and the four best teams will move on to the Lancaster County championship event in October. Team registration will begin at 10 a.m. Readers who would like more information may visit www.newhollandfair.org.

Volunteers from pg 13 pieces into kits. The program makes and distributes reflective vests for Amish and Mennonite children to wear when traveling on the roads. Residents of the local community are invited to participate. Individuals who would like to help in their own home may call 717-394-6851. Due to increased demand, there is a great need for more people to sew, as well as for someone to cut fabric for vests. Donations are also needed to purchase additional materials for more vests. Directions are available at www.Fair mountHomes.org.
