Trunk or Treat to emphasize Steps to Success’ role in CV community
BY JEFF FALK
Being part of a community comes with certain responsibilities. Being part of a community fosters various types of relationships. Being part of a community results in specific perks.
Steps to Success plays an important role in the Conestoga Valley community. Not only is the local nonprofit’s upcoming Trunk or Treat and book fair event a celebration of the CV community, but it’s also Steps to Success’ way of celebrating being part of that community.
“We’ve definitely become more prominent in the community,” said Adriana Witman, who’s been Steps to Success’ early education administrative director for the past year. “We might be a child care center, but we really take our position in the community seriously. We want to be the voice for kids. This event provides just a small glimpse into the amazing things we do every day.”
While Steps to Success does conduct fundraisers to support its mission of providing affordable child care, the Trunk or Treat and Scholastic book fair is the only community-wide outreach event it conducts each year. This year’s edition, the fourth annual, will be staged on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola.
The event is free to attend, and the fair will offer Scholastic books for purchase.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Witman. “Everybody’s having a really good time. It’s a lot of community. It’s
very busy. There’s a lot to do. It’s very high energy, and there’s a lot of engagement.”
The event will feature up to 40 vehicle trunks decorated for the Halloween season. Children may visit the trunks to receive candies, goodies and snacks. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated trunk and the best costume.
The event will also feature bounce houses, hot dogs, drinks, information booths hosted by community partners and food trucks.
Individuals seeking to host trunks can register at www.steps
tosuccessinc.com/trunkortreat.
“You can come and have fun for free,” said Witman. “My favorite thing is seeing kids have fun, but I also like seeing our community partners. It’s more than the usual interaction. I just love the coming together.”
Up to 300 members of young families and members of the CV community and beyond are expected to attend.
“The event used to be a trick-ortreat parade,” said Witman. “We wanted to have an event where kids could come out, spend time with each other and have a good
VIA is part of village raising local students
BY JEFF FALK
Learning is important, and teaching is tough. It is at that educational intersection where the work of Volunteers in Action (VIA) becomes essential.
VIA exists to cooperate with and support the faculty, administrators and staff members of the Conestoga Valley School District. It doesn’t teach students directly, but VIA plays a huge role in the learning process.
“If we don’t learn, we can’t grow,” said Lisa Smith, who’s been CV’s VIA district coordinator for three years. “I don’t think we can care deeply about things if we don’t learn about them. I was never a teacher, but teaching is hard. It’s tough, and with everything going on in the world, it’s
gotten harder. We save teachers a few minutes each day. We’re not helping to teach. We’re helping to free them up to teach. We try to take some of the burden off their plates.”
Landis Valley will highlight the harvest
BY JEFF FALK
Lancaster County residents have been celebrating the harvest at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, for a very long time, even before it was an official address.
It’s a tradition that Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum has grown through its Harvest Days event. Growing traditions is just one of the things that Landis Valley is good at.
“(Harvest Days) really transforms everyone back to another
time, just to see how things were done back then,” said Brian Dom, who’s been Landis Valley’s marketing and events coordinator for a year. “Basically, it’s a celebration of the end of the harvest in Lancaster County. We use it to highlight the crafts and trades used in the harvest. When people are here, we see personal reflection, and we don’t see a lot of cell phones. The focus is on family time and realizing the beautiful history we have here in Lancaster County.”

Seniors can swim their way to improved health
Exercise provides a number of measurable benefits for people of all ages, including older adults. Swimming is one exercise that may be especially beneficial for seniors.
Many people learn to swim in childhood and sharpen that skill as they get older. Although swimming devotees may get in the water for fun rather than fitness, this pastime may be the ideal exercise for seniors looking to improve their overall health, particularly because it is very low-impact.
Because the water pro -
vides buoyancy, there is reduced risk of injury and minimal strain on the body. Water exercises, including swimming, work all the muscle groups, so it can be a complete exercise, says American Senior Communities. Swimming also is a great cardiovascular exercise that can strengthen the heart muscle and improve lung function and endurance. Because it lowers blood pressure and improves circulation, swimming is a great way to get the heart pumping.
A gentle, 30-minute swim can burn up to 200 calories,
which is more than would be used when walking. A faster swim can burn calories more quickly than running or cycling, and since water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, this activity will put less stress on muscles and joints while one is exercising.
Individuals with mobility issues or arthritis pain may find that swimming helps relieve discomfort and improves range of motion. The water is doing much of the work holding up the body, which takes the stress off joints, helping a person to feel better while moving.
Even seniors who don’t

know how to swim can reap the benefits of water exercise. Walking in shallow water or using a kickboard to stay above the water can be effective. Using foam dumbbells or even pushing and pulling one’s arms through the water can serve as a great resistance exercise that builds strength.
Swimming and additional water activities are great ways for seniors to stay in shape. As always, individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe.
home health aide
Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.
Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she
cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.
AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal planning and cooking; picking up prescriptions; and providing companionship. Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.
Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.
Home health aides serve an important role in the health care

Ephrata Cloister sets dumpling sale, concerts
Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will hold its annual apple dumpling sale on Friday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. until sold out. Proceeds will go to the Back to the Cloister Fund, which allows the Cloister museum to compete with private collectors and other institutions on the open market for original items made at the Cloister. Over the years, proceeds from the apple dumpling sale have been used to purchase oneof-a-kind furniture, rare music manuscripts, and the original 1739 deed to the historic site. More than 100 items have been purchased since the creation of the fund more than 40 years ago. This year, the Back to the Cloister Fund purchased a Jacob Gorgas tall case clock that was made around the 1790s in the Gorgas shop in Ephrata. The clock will be displayed
in the Visitor Center at the Cloister. The apple dumplings, made by Achenbach’s in Leola, will be available for a fee per dumpling at the drive-through tent beside the museum store at the Historic Ephrata Cloister. The sale will take place rain or shine. Interested individuals are encouraged to make their purchases early. Preorders can be made by visiting https:// ephratacloister.org and looking under “Events.” Free delivery is available for preorders of 20 or more dumplings delivered within 10 miles of the Ephrata Cloister. Contact ephratacloister@gmail. com to make delivery arrangements. No admission to the museum is required to purchase apple dumplings.
The museum store, featuring locally made crafts, art, books, and one-of-a-kind items, will be open both days and will feature a selection of specialty goods.
For more information about apple dumpling sales or to learn more about the historic site, contact the Ephrata Cloister at 717-733-6600 or visit the aforementioned website. Additionally, community members are invited to celebrate the musical heritage of Ephrata on Sunday, Oct. 13, by attending concerts at the Ephrata Cloister. Music played a central role in the spiritual life of Ephrata Cloister in the 18th century. The community is home to some of the earliest documented music by woman composers in America, as discovered in a 1739 manuscript titled “Zionitischer Weyrauchs H√ºgel.” Attendees of the concerts will hear some of these compositions, along with pieces from other early American religious groups, including the Shakers and Moravians.
The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will
perform in the historic 1741 Saal (Meetinghouse) at 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m. Flutist Glenn Fisher will be featured in the Saal at 1 and 3 p.m. Faith and Mercy Martin will play music on the harpsichord and violin in the Visitor Center auditorium at 1, 2, and 3 p.m.
Seating for performances is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets can be purchased at the Visitor Center front desk on the day of the event and include access to all performances and the historic grounds. Admission is free for children age 5 and under and members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,

VIA provides educational support in the form of chaperoning for school trips and helping at events, like health screening days, picture days and teacher appreciation days; assisting with special projects; publishing, binding, laminating and photocopying; preparing classroom materials; and offering classroom assistance and library support.
“We want to make a difference in kids’ lives and empower students,” said Smith. “We’re so happy to help. We provide extra hands. We cooperate with teachers to get the job done. I tell the faculty, ‘If you have something we can help you with, just ask.’ We have things we always do for them, and then things will come up, and we’ll say, ‘Yes, we can help with that.’”
Smith oversees 13 VIA coordinators deployed across the Conestoga Valley School District’s seven buildings. Last year, volunteers in the program donated 6,172 hours to the school district.
All VIA participants must undergo background checks and are required to obtain the proper clearances through the state.
“Mostly they’re parents,” said Smith. “My building coordinators are all moms. They have children
of their own in the buildings. Grandparents can volunteer, just like any member of the community who gets their clearances. We can always use more people with clearances who are willing to come in.”
“We have a fabulous district, we have great kids, and we have wonderful educators,” Smith continued. “Volunteers are welcome, they’re needed, and they’re greatly appreciated by the people they are helping and the whole district. We’re happy we have people who are willing to come in and do these things.”
Nearly 4,000 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade are enrolled in the Conestoga Valley School District during the 2024-25 school year. CV maintains a student-to-teacher ratio of about 16-to-1.
“We are very different from (Parent Teacher Organizations),” said Smith. “PTOs raise money; VIA has no money.”
VIA was established by a Conestoga Valley mom, Jane Eastman, who saw a need and followed through on an idea. Next year, VIA will celebrate its 50th year of support in the Conestoga Valley School District.
“It started with one mom,” said Smith. “She wanted to get parents, grandparents and community members involved with the school district. I think it’s grown in ways we can’t really imagine. When she started it, they were doing minor things. But as time went on, there were needs for some other things.”

year’s edition of its annual Harvest Days on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in and around the 40 historic buildings situated on its 100 scenic acres. The event is highlighted by craft, food and other demonstrations related to the harvest, presented by experts dressed in 1700s-era clothing.
Parking is free, and an admission fee will be charged. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.
“What makes Harvest Days so unique is that you step right off Route 722, and when you step inside our village, you don’t even know there’s an outside world,” said Dom. “The Pennsylvania Germans came here with nothing and expanded the agricultural scene of Lancaster County immensely. That’s our goal: to educate and keep these memories alive.”
“For me personally, my favorite part of Harvest Days is the smiles,”
continued Dom. “The smiles have always done it for me. When you’re on-site, it’s hard to be upset. Everything seems to fade away when you step into the village.”
Through its demonstrating presenters, Harvest Days focuses on trades like coopering, blacksmithing, pottery, millinery, leatherworking and broom-making; foods like apple butter, sauerkraut and pork, as well as oven and hearth cooking; and fiber arts like weaving and spinning. In addition to the exhibits and demonstrations, Harvest Days will include live music, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating and a silent auction. A live auction will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m.
It takes a group of more than 100 staff members and volunteers for Landis Valley to present Harvest Days.
“When we’re demonstrating crafts, people have renewed interest, just seeing how some of those crafts used to be done,” said Dom. “The past just relives itself, especially in the agricultural field. Visitors are getting the history we offer here, and they’re also getting
those personal connections.”
“We’re also going to use Harvest Days to highlight the additions in our museum,” he added.
More than 2,000 visitors are expected to attend the 11 hours of Harvest Days, an event that Landis Valley has been staging for more than 60 years. Next year, Landis Valley will celebrate its 100th year as a museum, attraction and destination.
“I think locals will enjoy (Harvest Days) because there’s a connection for almost everyone who lives here,” said Dom. “We want people to come out, walk through and see what personal connections they can find.”
