GOTR Fall 5K Will Include New Team Tattoos And Testimonies

Open Race Will Welcome Area Runners

Club Hopes To Break Barriers

By Ann Mead Ash

One aspiration of the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster chapter is to make inclusion a priority of the program. “Our goal is to provide access (to the program) by (making) GOTR available where girls gather after school, which is not always at school,” explained GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “Many times that’s in community organizations like Boys and Girls Club,” said Johnson. “We will be inclusive in ensuring that all girls feel the curriculum is relevant and reflects their life experience and that all girls feel listened to, valued, and part of a team.” With that in mind, a team of nine girls from the Lancaster Boys and Girls See Fall 5K pg 3

Girls from every school district in the county are preparing to take part in the Girls on the Run 5K, which will be held at Millersville University on Nov. 10. The untimed 5K is open to area runners who would like to participate.

Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, and other members of the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club first heard of a Stonecroft Ministries event called Story Marks two years ago, and the women were intrigued. “Story Marks (is about) women and the stories behind their tattoos,” explained Strohecker. “It will be a one-night gallery experience featuring photographs of local women and the stories of their hearts.” On Thursday, Oct. 18, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos of up to 30 local women and to hear the testimonies of See Story Marks pg 4

Grant Street Dance To Present Restart’s Annual Banquet Anniversary Event At The Trust Will Feature David Ring By Ann Mead Ash

In 1998, Kim Jureckson was asked to teach a modern dance class to adults, and she had an epiphany. “I looked around, and there were beautiful dancers in this class,” recalled Jureckson. “They all had professional (dance) training … and I thought there should be opportunity for these people other than coming once a week to take a class.” Jureckson’s revelation eventually became Grant Street Dance Company, a multigenerational organization especially for sincere dancers who have not chosen dance as a career. “Once you pass 21, what does a dancer who has had serious training and chosen not to pursue that as a career do? You danced all your life and you love it. You are trained. You See Grant Street Dance pg 6

By Ann Mead Ash

Dancer Marian Veilleux will be one of 10 performers to participate in the Grant Street Dance Company concert titled “No Strings Attached” to be held at The Trust on Oct. 20 and 21.

Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), has known speaker David Ring for more than a decade. “I met David Ring in 2005 at the Sanford Teen Challenge in Sanford, Fla.,” recalled Santiago. “I was the director of education there when he came to speak.” Santiago had heard of Ring through the church community, and he was so impressed with Ring’s story that he remembered it and kept Ring in mind See Restart Banquet pg 7

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, will host its annual Harvest Days festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14. The venue will feature an assortment of educational activities, including a pumpkin patch, wagon rides, music, food, and demonstrations of historic crafts, trades, and farm chores. Harvest Days will feature demonstrations that tell the story of the historic harvest. After a fruitful summer, raw materials like apples, flax, wood, and hogs would be processed many times by hand - into usable products that would be used for food, warm clothing, or building materials. Tradespeople also made tools to supply to farmers,

loggers, and other people who worked the land. Visitors to Harvest Days will be able to see these processes and more at interactive exhibits set up around the site. They may also learn about crops that matured and were processed earlier in the year, such as flax and maple sap. Visitors will be able to talk to demonstrators and take part in activities for people of all ages. Special children’s areas will include a discovery tent and the museum’s education building. Folk music will be performed, and horse-drawn wagons will take visitors around the site. One wagon will feature seats, and another will be filled with straw. Sheep shearing demonstrations will take place, and visitors may watch as fleece is sheared

There will be a beekeeping demonstration with a portable hive, and a cow will be on-site, allowing attendees to learn about the different products that her milk will produce. There will also be an opportunity to learn about hog butchering. Food may be purchased from vendors, and pumpkins may be bought from the patch to decorate. Additionally, attendees will be able to try apple varieties and watch them get processed into apple butter, cider, and pies. Separate admission fees have been set for adults, for seniors age 65 and up, and for youths

ages 6 to 11. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. All proceeds will benefit the museum. Situated on 100 acres, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a living history crossroads village that collects, preserves, and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German community from 1740 to 1940. The museum is administered by the PHMC with the active support of the Landis Valley Associates, a registered charitable organization. Braden Will Perform Cristabelle Braden will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The doors will open at 7 p.m. Braden is a singer, a songwriter, and a speaker on brain injury, and she is the founder of Hope After Head Injury. After suffering a traumatic brain injury as a young teenager, she has achieved many things that were previously thought impossible, including graduating from college, releasing three albums of original music, and touring the country as a singer and speaker on brain injury. She never wrote a song before the brain injury, but within the first month of recovery, she wrote many songs. In February 2017 she released an original EP, titled “Hope Survives,” with songs all about her journey related to brain injury. She has toured all over the country to sing and speak at brain injury support groups, rehab centers, conferences, prison ministries, homeless shelters, music venues, and more. In the fall of 2017, she marked her radio debut with “Let the Sun In.” Her goal is to use music to

share her hope-filled story of rehabilitation from brain injury as a way to encourage and empower others going through similar circumstances. Hope After Head Injury aims to provide a support system that focuses on the emotional aspect on healing from brain injury, with an emphasis on online support. Admission to the event is free. Emmaus Road Cafe offers coffee beverages, Italian sodas and baked goods for sale. The cafe may be contacted at emmausroadcafe@gmail.com or at 717-478-3672. Information is also available by visiting www.emmausroadcafe.org or searching for “Emmaus Road Cafe” on Facebook.

Pie Sale from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The members of the Valley of Lancaster Lodge of Perfection are gearing up for their biannual piemaking frenzy. In preparation for Thanksgiving, which will be observed on Thursday, Nov. 22, the Masons are taking orders for 10 types of handcrafted, 10-inch, deep-dish dessert pies. Thursday, Oct. 25, has been set as the deadline for orders. The pies will be available for pickup at Lancaster County Masonic lodges in Lancaster, Quarryville, Ephrata, Elizabethtown, and Mount Joy on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. This fall’s lineup includes baked and chilled minced meat, apple crumb, cherry crumb, peach crumb, and pumpkin, as well as fresh sugar-free apple, baked frozen pumpkin, and unbaked frozen apple crumb, cherry crumb, and peach crumb. The frozen pies may be stored until Christmas, although lodge member and pie project chair Bill Hackman said that he has successfully frozen pies for two years thanks to the heavy freezer bags the lodge uses to protect the baked goods. The Masons make their pie dough from scratch, and they use Hackman’s mother’s recipe for pumpkin pie. All of the crumbs on the fruit pies are made with butter, and the apples are peeled and sliced fresh. While some premade

fillings are used, the Masons put their own twist on them, such as adding tart red cherries to the cherry pie filling. It takes at least 150 people to cover the shifts in the kitchen at the Masonic Center, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster. The lodge members painstakingly build these pies to raise funds for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, which has offices in the Masonic Center. Pie sale proceeds account for about 40 percent of the center’s operating budget, said director Heather Hinkel. The center serves students in first through 12th grades from Lancaster, Lebanon, York, and Chester counties, remediating dyslexia using the Orton-Gillingham method. All instruction is provided individually at no charge to clients, but it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one client for a year. To order pies or to learn more about dyslexia remediation, readers may visit www.childrensdyslexia centeroflancaster.org, call 717481-5680, or email cdclancaster pa@gmail.com. Pictured on front: The Valley of Lancaster Lodge of Perfection is accepting orders for dessert pies that will be available for pickup on Nov. 20 in time for Thanksgiving. Orders are due by Oct. 25, and proceeds will benefit the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster.

Landis Valley To Host Harvest Days

PENNYSAVER

Club began meeting on Sept. 10, and the group will take part in its first 5K when GOTR Lancaster holds its fall run at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration for the untimed run in the Pucillo Gymnasium will begin at 7 a.m. GOTR kicked off its fall season on Sept. 4 with 61 teams and 800 girls meeting in every school district in the county. Jessica Wilson, who has coached the Blue Ball Elementary team, said that this year’s 5K will include a variety of activities for the girls and their running buddies. “The presenting sponsor, (a local) orthopedic and physical therapy practice, will create a temporary tattoo that reflects GOTR and the fall 5K,” said Wilson. In addition, the primping items that the girls may use before the race will include colored hair spray, face paint crayons, and bracelets they can inscribe. Wilson noted that Millersville University students take a special interest in the 5K. “All the

Millersville University athletic teams send representatives on Saturday morning,” Wilson said. “As all the girls are running, (the Millersville students) will be cheering at the tops of their lungs or forming tunnels with their hands for the girls to run through or creating a high-five line (for the runners).” Wilson noted that the Millersville students can provide a real boost. “A girl who is struggling with motivation will turn the corner and see that team and take off,” said Wilson. “It lifts the spirit.” Johnson noted that in addition, members of area high school clubs volunteer at the 5K. Johnson shared that GOTR staff members are pleased to welcome the new team from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club to the program. “We are so excited to be branching out to a nontraditional site,” she stated, noting that the program is always mindful of physical and cognitive disabilities. “We will strive to provide curriculum modifications when needed, and we promise all

girls will have a coach who has been trained to understand social context and create positive and inclusive environments and build genuine relationships.” Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expressed gratitude for those who volunteered to lead the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club team. “We have one staff member, one intern, and the father of a girl on another city team who stepped up to coach,” said West. “He saw the need, and we are really excited about that.” Both West and Johnson hope to see more teams that meet outside the traditional sites take part in the program. “We want to be a reflection of the communities that we’re engaging,” said Johnson. “We invite the community (to let us know) if they have a spot where girls are gathering and want to start a team,” added West. Readers who wish to take part in the run may register via www.gotrlancaster.org/5K. Registration will be discounted through Friday, Nov. 9. Discounts are also offered for running buddies and for children age

8 and under. Each GOTR participant who runs the 5K does so with a running buddy, who must be age 16 or older. Often, the buddy is a family member, but Wilson noted that volunteer running buddies are often needed. Individuals who would like to volunteer to be running buddies may visit www.gotrlancaster .org/5k#show-volunteer.

you put something permanently on your body, it’s not on your body, it’s on your heart,” said Friedrichs. “It’s tattooed on to who you are.” Another aim is to break down stereotypes and focus on the universal. “ We want to literally share our stories to support and encourage one another,” explained Friedrichs. “We are coming together as sisters to share the love of Christ with a sense of community.” She hopes to change perceptions in the process. “This is about women loving and needing each other (because) we were put in this world to help each other and reach out to each other,” she said. “There’s no judgment or criticism (because) we all need Jesus.” Other members of the Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster Christian Women’s Club hub who are organizing the event include Linda Johnston, Rebekah Christens-Persaud, Marlene Hall, and Joleen Yunginger. The Salvation Army’s worldrenowned New York Staff Band (NYSB) will present a free community concert on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite High School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The NYSB was founded in 1887 to bring attention to the early ministry of The Salvation Army in the United States. Since that time, the group, one of the nation’s oldest continuous musical ensembles, has traveled the world playing brass pieces. The band has worked with and produced numerous musical acts. Both Philip Smith, former principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic, and Stephen Bulla, chief arranger for the U.S. Marine Band, are counted as NYSB alumni. The band has premiered pieces from composers including Eric Ball, Erik Leidzen, and James Curnow, and it has worked with composers such as Emil Soderstrom, Wilfred Heaton, and Emmy Award-winning Bruce Broughton. Guest vocalists to sing with the NYSB have included the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Michael W. Smith, Sara Groves, Elton John, and others. While visiting the Lancaster area, the NYSB will partake in

The photographs that will be displayed were taken by photographer Sally Krueger, who donated the photo sessions to the event and who will gift them to those who volunteered to be photographed. Friedrichs said that at the heart of the event is a passion to reach young women who do not know Jesus. “This is about meeting a girl where she is and as she is with support and encouragement,” said Friedrichs. For Strohecker, the 24 months since she first heard of Story Marks has represented a personal journey that highlights a significant change in her outlook. When she first heard of Story Marks, she was skeptical of the idea. “The Lord began to work in my heart about being judgmental,” said Strohecker, who said that a sermon her pastor preached in the fall of 2017 on the subject of prejudices also affected her. “The Lord really spoke to me,” said Strohecker, who remembered Story Marks at that time. “I felt so convicted and passionate about this,” she added, noting that during a February vacation to Florida she decided to get a tattoo of two intertwining hearts and the words “Endless Love” to honor her marriage of more than 50 years. The transformation of Strohecker’s viewpoint has given her greater understanding for the reasons many women have tattoos. “I always thought it was about rebellion,” said Strohecker. “That was my perception. Once I understood there is a story behind them, I could see there’s a significant meaning.” One goal of the event is to convey the message that tattoos are more than skin deep. “When

Rather it has done small performances in other shows. The anniversary event will be a celebration of the 20 years Grant Street has been creating dance experiences for dancers and audiences. performance. “The other goal I had in addition to breaking strings was to see if I could blend a group of unrelated dances together in a seamless performance,” said Jureckson. “It’s an ongoing flowing kind of experience with the underlying theme of human connection.” Jureckson added that this connection will be displayed physically in dancers’ bodies actually sharing weight or in focus with dancers looking at each other in a way that conveys a message. Jureckson pointed out that dance plays an important role in an age where communication is

easier than ever but real human connection is not necessarily in abundance. “Dance is an art form that you can’t phone in,” Jureckson commented. “You have to be in the same room with someone to dance with them.” Calling dance personal and genuine whether two people are dancing or two dozen are taking the stage, she added, “When you’re dancing together, it’s an authentic connection.” Making connections during rehearsal is not always easy, according to Jureckson, who is working with all women for this show. “Working with dancers of different ages and backgrounds is not always smooth, but it is real connection,” Jureckson relayed. “It is a collaborative effort (where) we all come together as professionals, and we have to keep lines of communication open. I find that beautiful (and) challenging and a refreshing change.” For the first 10 years of its existence, Grant Street self

Medical personnel, believing Ring was dead, ignored the baby for nearly 20 minutes. “That’s a miracle,” said Santiago. “Who doesn’t breathe for 20 minutes and lives?” W hen Ring was orphaned, his older sister took him in. “(Ring’s) older sister was a believer, and she introduced him to the Lord,” noted Santiago. Doors will open for fellowship and appetizers at 5:30 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. Ring, who was born with cerebral palsy, became an orphan at the age of 14. He endured ridicule and embarrassment because of his disabilities, but Ring found acceptance and selfrespect after beginning a relationship with Christ, which has sustained him and allowed him to overcome in spite of his circumstances. Ring has shared his story with thousands of people since he began speaking in 1973. Santiago has heard Ring speak

At this time, six students live in the facility along with two graduates who are serving as interns and four live-in staff members. The facility can accommodate up to a dozen students. Santiago noted that one way the ministry helps students to beat addiction is through significant amounts of Bible study and training. “We have a track record of working toward a minimum of 20 hours a week of either spiritual or life skill classes with the men in this house,” said Santiago. “In a month’s time, that is 80 hours of discipleship classes.” According to Santiago, the banquet will start off with appetizers, followed by a salad bar. Bucks Survive Falcons in 2-1 Double OT Win by Leah Sintic

Buckskin boys soccer experienced a week of split results with a win and a loss last week, both games showing a thrilling display of effort and skill. Ending the week on a 2-1 win at home, CV showed how badly they wanted it, in a come-from-behind, double overtime takedown of Cedar Crest. The stat lines proclaimed Buckskin dominance, as they outshot the Falcons 10-3 and worked their way into 13 corner kick opportunities, but the

Falcons capitalized on an early game breach and slipped in a goal after 22 minutes to hold the initial lead. Urgency struck the Bucks in the second half, and Joel Kasereka rose to the occasion for his first goal of the season, leveling the score and sending the game into extended minutes. “We lacked a little in the execution of our build up and so the game became a bit tougher than we could have made it,” explained head coach Dave Hartlaub. A scoreless first overtime propelled the teams into yet another extra

found themselves just short in the 5-4 outcome. Robbie Krasinski notched the Buckskins only first half goal, and added two more to complete a hat trick before the second half expired. Ethan Bredeman also got in on the scoring action with a second half goal, but the Warriors paired two early first half goals with three rapid-fire conversions late in the second to give them the five needed to

come out on top. TENNIS The Lady Bucks celebrated team successes last week as the runnerups in the LL League team tennis tournament. It all came down to Wednesday’s finals, a showdown between Manheim Township and Conestoga Valley at Ephrata, and the Blue Streaks prevailed, 4-0. “In the Township match we battled well at all of the positions. Even though the scores looked lopsided, we made them work for their points,” summarized head coach Dale Gregg. Township was the only team to overcome the CV rackets during the regular season, a trend that continued in the post-season tournament. CV worked their way through the first two rounds of LL League team tennis tournament, powering past Manheim Central (3-0) and Lebanon Catholic (3-2) to earn the right to compete in the final round last Wednesday. Township’s road to the finals included a preliminary bye, followed by a 3-0 sweep over Lampeter-Strasburg, before their meeting with the Buckskins. Getting the job done in singles was Jacqueline McBride winning at number two in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) and Rachel Eby overcoming her number three singles opponent (6-0, 6-1). Credit for CV’s third team point to seal the triumph went to duo Hannah Kapchinske and Katelyn Kochanowski playing at number two and, also dominating in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). Tuesday’s semifinal round against Lancaster Catholic was a bit tighter of a contest, but the Lady Bucks rose to the challenge and were awarded the 3-2 win. The Buckskin triumph reflected Monday’s efforts. McBride was first to register a team point with a 7-5, 6-3 takedown in singles. Eby followed suit to claim her matchup with set scores of 6-4, 6-3, and Kapchinske and Kochanowski handily won number two doubles by a score of 6-1, 6-3. “The number two doubles of Kapchinske/Kochanowski really stepped up in the LC match as they went out to start their match knowing it was even at 2-2,” praised Gregg. Thursday the attention shifted from team competition to the individual flight tournament which will conclude this week with results to be covered next week. GIRLS’ SOCCER CV girls soccer refused to lose last week, picking up a win and another draw to bring their season record to 8-3-3. Friday night at Cedar Crest, the Lady Bucks experienced their third stalemate of the season in a 1-1 tie after double overtime failed to

period where stamina became a factor. Mustering a final effort after 97 minutes on the field, the Bucks broke through when Logan Weaver connected for the golden goal. “We were happy with the effort and spirit of the boys. I am proud of the perseverance of the boys to get the result,” praised Hartlaub. On Tuesday, the Bucks collided with Warwick and after the dust settled from a slew of goals, CV

determine a victor. Though the scoreboard remained unaltered through much of the evening, the two goals were netted within four minutes of each other, with each team finding their one success midway through the second half. CV struck first, when Leah Amico found the netting for her first goal of the season at the 52nd minute mark, but Cedar Crest had their answer with their goal crossing the line four minutes later. Despite two overtime periods, neither team was willing to budge, creating a defensive battle until time expired. CV’s Alyson Riggle held firm in goal, scooping up 10 saves. On Tuesday, the Lady Bucks proved their ability to endure, securing a 2-1 triumph over Warwick in overtime. The Warriors sprinted ahead for the early lead, notching their lone goal of the contest after 14 minutes on the field to hold the temporary advantage. Just before the half, the momentum started to shift in favor of CV, when Gabbie Barone capitalized on a penalty kick to level the scoreboard. A scoreless second half propelled the game into overtime.

“We needed to possess the ball better and connect passes. We didn’t do that very well overall against Warwick,” explained head coach Keith Nagley. Working towards that end, the Lady Bucks pressed on into the extra minutes, minimizing the Warrior’s offensive opportunities and gaining ground until their moment to strike. That moment came after 12 minutes when Barone found Ana Weis who delivered the ball into the Warrior net. “Our defense has been doing a great job limiting opponents’ shots on goal. We just continued to play hard and hustle,” summarized Nagley. FOOTBALL Last Friday night’s hosting of the Cocalico proved to be a tough setback for the Bucks, falling 49-14 to the Eagles. CV got off to a strong start when quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus connected with Derek Ulishney for the game’s first TD on a 15-yard pass, but after that initial completion, the Eagles countered with seven visits to their end zone. A fourth quarter 46-yard run by Booper Johnson gained the Bucks

stretch of the season with a current record of 2-9, but they have a string of league matchups left to show their improvement. FIELD HOCKEY Field hockey picked up another win last week, but hasn’t been immune to the tumultuous weather this season, and their other contest was prematurely halted in a stalemate due to inclement conditions.

Lady Bucks were rewarded with a 3-1 triumph. Three separate CV athletes supplied the tallies, with a stroke from Ellie Livingston getting them on the scoreboard in the first half. Headed into the second half of play with the score knotted at one apiece, the Lady Bucks were determined not to let this contest end without a victor. Cassandra Malles struck next, connecting with the backboard nine minutes into the second half for the goahead goal, and with just minutes left to play Carly Eberly sealed the victory with CV’s third goal. Strong, cohesive defense from Conestoga and three saves from keeper Madi Kachel held Ephrata scoreless in the second half.

another six points, and kicker Joe Cardina was two-for-two on PATs. CROSS COUNTRY The CV girls raced their way to split results in last Tuesday’s meet held at home, collectively finishing behind Warwick but in front of Penn Manor. Alexandra Slingluff was the runner-up of the meet, finishing in second place with a time of 20:36, a personal best and just two seconds behind Warwick’s Anna Martin. Freshman Kylynn Frankford was the next CV harrier to cross the line, securing a fifth-place finish (21:45). “Alex ran her personal best on our home course and ran a great race, and Kylynn has consistently been our number two runner all year,” praised head coach Mark Amway. CV accumulated five more top 15 finishes with Lauryn Hall’s eighth, Annika Bredeman, Kate Kmieczak, and Brittney Johns finishing consecutively in 11th, 12th, and 13th, and Emily Castronova grabbing 15th. The boys suffered losses to both Warwick and Penn Manor, but still managed to secure three top 15 finishes. Frontrunner Nate Grucelski continues to set the pace for not only his teammates, but also for the opposing teams, as he once again put up the fastest 5k time of the meet to cross the finish first in 16:57. “Nate ran his best time on our home course and beat three very strong runners in the league,” explained Amway. “The boys’ race was strategic and eventually came down to a fast finish with Nate outkicking Warwick’s Connor Shields.” Joining Grucelski in the top pack was teammate Emmanuel Gitonga who finished in eighth (18:26) and Dante Velasco in twelfth (18:48). VOLLEYBALL Lady Buckskin volleyball took two hits last week, a 3-1 loss to Lancaster Catholic and a 3-0 slip to Hempfield. In Tuesday’s matchup with Lancaster Catholic, the Buckskins rallied for a second set win, but LC regained control to take the match in four (25-12, 18-25, 25-16, 25-14). Savannah Byers and Lexi McEvoy teamed up to fire eight kills apiece and Byers cranked four aces over the net. Charlize Miller dished out 16 setter assists, Maddie Glick covered ground for 14 digs, and Denise Williams supplied a block in the loss. Hempfield captured their win in a sweep (25-9, 25-12, 25-12), but Lady Bucks led by Miller (6 digs, 8 assists) and Byers (7 kills) continued to battle. The team faces an uphill challenge as they head into the home

Tuesday’s homefield 0-0 draw against Hempfield came as a result of a lengthy weather delay in the first half. After resuming competition, neither team budged defensively and the scoreboard remained unaltered at the end of regulation. Neither team showed signs of relenting, but at 9:00 pm and with continued lightning, the officials were forced to call the game before overtime could be played. “We were playing a great game and the team was disappointed they could not compete in overtime, because they were ready to put the ball in the goal,” explained head coach Kelly Dearolf. Their aggressive offensive spirit would have to wait until Thursday’s matchup against Ephrata, and the

Band To Perform Polka New Holland Music And More CROP Walk Slated The Heidelberg Brass Band will perform on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. German and Polish polka music is an important part of the repertoire of the band, which has been entertaining the public in Lancaster and Berks counties for more than six decades. The band has performed for 44 consecutive years at the annual Kutztown Folk Festival, which celebrates the heritage of the German-speaking settlers of Pennsylvania. Heidelberg in the band’s name came from its origins in Heidelberg Township, Berks County. For many years it was the Heidelberg

Polka Band. The group changed its name to the Heidelberg Brass Band to reflect the songs of other genres it sometimes plays, such as the “Blue Skirt Waltz” and “Iowa Brigade Band March.” The band’s brass instruments include four trumpets, a tuba, a baritone and a trombone. Glen A. Beard Sr. is the drummer. A Lutheran minister, Glen A. Beard Jr. of Ephrata, is the band manager, sings, sometimes fills in on the drums, and adds humor and commentary at the band’s performances. Admission to the Oct. 14 show is free. Refreshments will be provided. Donations to the Eicher Arts Center will be accepted.

Looking forward to walking to raise funds to fight hunger in the New Holland Area CROP Walk are (from left) Karen Glaser, Anne Weaver, Nancie Weaver, George Weaver, and Kris Poontajak. The walk will begin at New Holland Community Park at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 21.

The Lancaster County Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m. in the fellowship hall in the Village Center Building at Brethren Village Retirement Community, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz. Jacqueline Wardle, assistive technology specialist for Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Lending Library, will present

the library’s free loan program. The meeting will be captioned in real time, and a hearing loop will be provided. For more information, readers may call 717-355-6860 or email kingsley@hlaa-pa.org. The programs of the Lancaster County Chapter of HLAA are intended to help people who are hard of hearing cope with their hearing loss.

At a recent meeting of the New Holland Area CROP Walk committee, Kris Poontajak, pastor of Cedar Grove Church, and fellow committee member Nancie Weaver considered a reason for walking that might surprise some area residents. “Money doesn’t only provide food,” said Nancie. “Some of it goes to digging wells to provide water for agriculture so people can help themselves.” Kris, who co-coordinates the CROP Walk effort with George Weaver, added, “Clean water produces a clean environment. We want to emphasize (that the fundraiser helps provide) clean water.” In some countries, people travel an average of 6 kilometers to obtain clean water. CROP is sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), and Patrick Walker, senior community engagement specialist for CWS, along with Kris, Nancie, George and his wife, Anne, hopes to see 100 walkers at this year’s event slated for Sunday, Oct. 21, at the New Holland Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, beginning at 1:30 p.m. According to Kris, the fundraiser offers several ways to participate. Preregistered walkers and cyclists may check in at the Rotary Pavilion prior to the walk. Registration on the day of the walk will begin at the pavilion at 1 p.m. Walkers and runners may complete a 3-mile or 6-mile route throughout Garden Spot Village (GSV), which is located adjacent to the park. Nancie noted that cyclists may complete either a 3- or 9-mile route, which will leave the GSV campus. “(Cyclists) must have a helmet and wear closed-toed shoes,” Nancie said.

New Holland churches that will participate in the walk in addition to Cedar Grove include Trinity Lutheran, New Holland Mennonite, St. John Center Lutheran, Ranck’s United Methodist, Garden Spot Community Church, and Our Lady of Lourdes. Leola-area churches that will participate include Zion Lutheran of Leola, Forest Hills Mennonite of Leola, and Leola United Methodist. Members or friends of one of those churches may contact the church’s designated CROP Walk recruiter to register for the fundraiser. Readers may also preregister at www.crophungerwalk.org by searching for “New Holland Area CROP Walk.” Kris said that the fundraiser will begin with an opening prayer at 1:30 p.m. and then bicycles will leave just prior to walkers. One member of the committee who walks will carry a special staff decorated with bells. George will designate the person who will carry the staff. “We will have eight bells on the walking staff,” said Kris. According to Patrick, the bells have special meaning. “Each bell represents five years,” Patrick explained. “We used to give these out to be added to the walking sticks in recognition of a five year anniversary.” Patrick added that the bells are specially made for CROP. “These are ‘shells to bells’ - mines and military weapons that have been melted down to be cast into bells,” he said. “They are bells of peace, bells that sing out for safe conditions, bells that ring with compassion.” Last year’s walk attracted 75 participants and raised nearly $11,000. This year, organizers hope to raise $15,000. “Over (the) 40 years (New Holland has held a walk), we have raised $650,000,” said George. According to CWS, CROP funds can transform communities by bringing food and water to people in need. The availability of clean water is especially important because when individuals do not have to walk miles to obtain water, they can use the time to work, build a business, or take advantage of educational opportunities. Readers who have questions about the New Holland Area CROP Walk may call 717-355-2790 or Cedar Grove Church at 717-354-5573.

SATURDAY, OCT. 20, AT 8:30 A.M.

Since its genesis in 2010, Prima, a contemporary theater organization in Lancaster, has performed at more than a dozen venues across Lancaster County. Being nomadic has limited performance dates, consumed nearly one-third of the organization’s annual budget, and depleted nearly 40 percent of staff time, while also inconveniencing audiences. To address this challenge, Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, as well as Sequinox, has made visionary investments toward Prima acquiring a home in the western part of Lancaster city. Formerly known as the Hamilton Ballroom, the new

Prima venue, located at 941 Wheatland Ave. in Lancaster, offers 125 free parking spaces with a 200-person capacity. The space will offer flexible seating and staging arrangements, including inthe-round, thrust, and proscenium setups. With the design and construction leadership of TONO Group, Prima’s new home is undergoing a transformation to become a contemporary destination for theater, music, film, and special events. Prima will be situated for complete hospitality services with a full kitchen. Illuminated Integration is installing state-of-theart audio, video, and lighting equipment. Total improvements
