Trunk Or Treat Will Feature An International Theme
LMHS To Stage “Romeo and Juliet”
Michelle Shertzer (left) and Heather Leicy are preparing to take Trunk or Treat attendees on a trip around the world when they visit Faith Church on Oct. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. By Ann Mead Ash
Between 150 and 200 area children attended the 2018 Trunk or Treat held at Faith Church. This year’s fifth annual free event will be based on the theme “Take a Trip Around the World,” and up to 15 decorated car trunks will line the church parking lot to give attendees a simulated journey around the globe. Area children who attend are encouraged to dress in costume for the festivities, which will be held at
the church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on Friday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event, which is scheduled to take place both outside and inside the church, will include free food and other activities, and it will be held rain or shine. “Each trunk will be decorated to represent a different country,” explained Heather Leicy. As the children visit each trunk, they will have their passports marked. Leicy noted that as the attendees visit trunks and have their See Trunk Or Treat pg 6
When director Dean Sauder chose “Romeo and Juliet” as the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) fall play, he wanted to present the show to audiences who may have never seen the entire play, and he set it in the present with contemporary scenes of students in high school using cellphones. Megan Esch, who plays the Nurse, has caught Sauder’s vision. “I feel a lot of people (think) Shakespeare is old and boring, but a lot of this show is really funny,” she said. “I want people who come to see it to have a new understanding of Shakespeare.” “Romeo and Juliet” will be staged at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17; Friday, Oct. 18; and Saturday, Oct. 19. A matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Leads in the tragic tale of starcrossed lovers from feuding families will include Noah Schnabel as Romeo and Noelle Stringer as Juliet. Josiah Esch will play Friar Lawrence. See LMHS Play pg 2 The

Cast members began working on memorizing their lines early in the summer, and Schnabel said he was concerned that audiences might be confused by the original Shakespearean dialogue in a modern setting. However, once rehearsals began, the depth of the subject matter moved to the forefront. “A lot of wrong choices are made,” noted Megan, adding that life lessons for both children and parents are contained in the script. “Don’t shut your children down when they want to talk,” she said. “Don’t do stuff behind your parents’ backs. This is an example of how tragically wrong that can go.” Josiah agreed. “(Romeo and Juliet’s) problems snowball throughout the show,” he said, warning, “Problems can snowball if you don’t address them.” The cast members are also having fun preparing to stage the show, which will be presented in a canyon format, with the audience on stage with the actors. “The nurse is an extreme character,” explained Megan. “She doesn’t have a setting between really happy and really upset, so I have to get into the character before I enter the scene and then hold an extreme emotion during the dialogue.” “I am getting really immersed in the play,” said Josiah. “We get to know the play really well, and I find it fun personally (because) I like learning the motivations of characters and how that affects the timeline of events.” The small cast, which includes fewer than 20 students, has meant the actors and crew have had a chance to develop camaraderie. “It’s fun to interact with each other on and off stage,” said Megan. “We are pretty tight knit.” Schnabel said that overall, the tragedy has been a challenge to stage but that he feels a sense of accomplishment. “When a scene is over, it’s a relief … you’re tired,” he said. “It was really tough, but I am glad I did it.”

Local Group Helps International Fight Against Trafficking By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Steve Thurston was riding the subway in Philadelphia when he saw something suspicious. At first, he thought that he was observing a father with his troublesome teenage daughter, but the more he paid attention, the more he could tell his initial assumption was incorrect. The pair left the train heading in one direction, and Steve headed in another. The incident stuck with him, however, and he told his wife, Amy, about it when he arrived home later that day. They agreed that Steve had probably witnessed an incident of human trafficking. “He realized he missed an opportunity (to intervene),” Amy said. At the time, the Thurstons were living in King of Prussia. Steve had a marketing and advertising background. Amy had worked in higher education for 15 years, and she had supported girls who had been raped or abused. The couple decided that together, they could make an impact on preventing

Love. will have a booth at the park where individuals may learn how they can get involved in local efforts to stop human trafficking and assist survivors. “We want to hear more people reporting (trafficking) and taking a stand so this doesn’t happen to our kids, our neighbors,” Amy said. A21 Walk for Freedom in Harrisburg for the past three years. They are launching Lancaster’s first Walk for Freedom on Saturday, Oct. 19, starting from Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and they hope to start another iteration of the event in Reading next year. Walk for Freedom is a global fundraising and awareness event started by A21, an international nonprofit organization that fights modern-day slavery. The walks look similar, no matter where they are held: Participants dressed in black and holding signs walk single file through the host city, distributing flyers containing information about human trafficking and ways to make change possible. Registration on Oct. 19 will open at 9 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9:30 a.m. The route of a little under 2 miles will take participants around downtown Lancaster.

human trafficking, particularly by identifying potential victims’ vulnerabilities and bolstering their confidence. The Thurstons moved to Lancaster because of the area’s high rate of human trafficking. They established Hope. Inspire. Love. in January 2017 in order to eradicate human trafficking and sexual exploitation. “Freedom is our legacy” is the organization’s motto. Amy has been busy speaking to teenagers aging out of foster care, high school students, parenting groups, and others in order to raise awareness about human trafficking and how young people can be tricked into it. “Teaching children they have a voice is huge,” Amy said. “The more you educate and make (transparency) a part of everyday life, the less they feel they have to keep things secret.” Recently, Amy expanded her scope to include law enforcement at the request of a police chief who said that he did not want his staff to become numb to prostitution. Amy explained that often sex workers wind up in that career because they were trafficked. Hope. Inspire. Love. also works alongside North Star Initiative and other intervention-effort operations to help rescue survivors and connect them with community groups and faith-based organizations that will help them recover. Nearly 50 high school seniors from all over Lancaster County have been hard at work learning how to safely handle dogs as part of the Veterinary Assistant Program at the Willow Street campus of the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), 1730 Hans Herr Drive. When the students graduate at the end of the year, they will be able to work as veterinary assistants. Many of the students will continue their studies at a technical college, working toward certification as veterinary technicians. In the meantime, however, the students need opportunities to practice their skills and increase their familiarity around many kinds of animals. One way that the program enables students to gain this experience is by including a visit to the Westmin-

Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC), 40 W. Main St., Strasburg, will host fundraisers for collective and personal causes, as well as several other events. A chicken potpie dinner will take place on Friday, Oct. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall, 46 W. Main St., and a benefit for a church member with leukemia will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 5 to 10 p.m. in the pole barn behind the church. A vendor, craft, and antique show has been set for Saturday, Nov. 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Oct. 25 dinner will feature “real, Lancaster County potpie,” said church member Kay Graybill. “With noodles. It’s not a pie,” added church member Wanda Albright. Diners will also be served peas, coleslaw, rolls, and assorted desserts. In lieu of an admission price, donations will be accepted for the meal. Quarts of potpie will be available for takeout at a set cost. Readers with questions about the dinner may call Albright at 717-786-4735. The proceeds from the potpie dinner and the vendor, craft, and antique show will support the “Raise the Roof” campaign, which will pay the cost to replace the rubber roof on the fellowship hall, which Graybill estimated is at least 20 years old. The church is also starting to increase its capital fund. Graybill noted that the church building was constructed in 1894 for the cost of $12,500 and without taking on debt. “We would like to be debt-free (on future

Wesley United Methodist Church of Strasburg, represented by (from left) Kay Graybill, Wanda Albright, and Vickie Buller, will host several events, including a potpie dinner on Oct. 25. projects),” she added. Anyone who would like to be a vendor at the Nov. 23 show may call Graybill at 717371-8753. The Nov. 2 event has been organized by church member Vickie Buller to benefit Mike and Candi Oster, Wesley members and active philanthropists. “She has helped with lots of other fundraisers in Lancaster County over the past 10 years,” Buller said. “Now it’s her turn (to feel the support).” Candi was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, but while medication controlled it, the disease changed in March this year. Her best hope for survival and remission is a bone marrow transplant from her brother, and she was set to undergo the procedure on Oct. 8 in Philadelphia. Even if her recovery goes as planned, Candi, who is employed by the Conestoga Valley High School, will be out of work for a year. In order to help lessen the financial burden, church members have organized a familyfriendly fundraiser on Nov. 2. A small cover charge may be paid at the door, which will give attendees access to music, dancing, billiards, air hockey, and prize drawings. A children’s area will offer crafts. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, and the menu will include meatball sandwiches, hot dogs, fried chicken, Spanish rice, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, pasta salad, and desserts. Buller is accepting donations of items for the drawings, and readers who would like to contribute may call her at 717-687-0208.

On the opposite end of the field, The final showdown pitted Snader snatched up six saves to preserve the shutout. The young squad has plenty to look forward to in the future, only graduating one senior, Ethan Bredeman, who suffered an injury midway through the season. “It was a big blow to lose our only returning captain,” Hartlaub said of Bredeman who expects to continue his soccer career at the collegiate level. “Ethan is a great kid who will recover from this. He’s the type of kid who you know will be a success.” TENNIS Conestoga Valley had a whole lot to celebrate at the conclusion of the LL League Flighted tournament last Tuesday, with three Buckskin champions crowned in singles flights and one in doubles. Perhaps no one was celebrating more than CV’s Sophia Steed, Flight 3 singles champion, and Ellie Kready, Flight 4 singles champion-as the two also teamed up to claim the Flight 2 doubles crown. Rachel Eby gave the Buckskins yet another reason to celebrate, claiming the Flight 2 singles bracket with a championship win over Manheim Township’s Julia Briner (6-1, 6-1). out our matches and it has helped to get results,” pointed out head coach Dave Hartlaub. Aiden O’Sullivan notched a first half goal to put the Bucks in control, and Owen Linder put in the insurance goal with 12 minutes left in the second. CV keeper, Luke Snader, came up with six key saves to thwart the Hempfield counter attack. On Monday, it was the Comets of Penn Manor that fell victim to a 2-1 overtime result. The Bucks led most of the game after O’Sullivan tucked in a goal just before the half. Time was dwindling for the Comets to make a come-
back, but they found their moment with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, propelling the cold, rainy contest into overtime. Refusing to let the Comets flip momentum to their advantage, the Bucks entered the extension with one purpose-put an end to the contest in their favor. Thirty-four seconds in, they succeeded with a goal from Andrew Wahba. “We have had a number of players step up to score goals and our defense has been more organized and less penetrable,” explained Hartlaub. The previous Friday featured a 2-0

Township, before claiming the final battle, an 8-3 triumph against Lampeter-Strasburg. Jacquelyn McBride also gave a strong performance in the tournament, competing in AAA Flight 1 singles. McBride advanced to the semi-final round before being handed a defeat from Avery Palandjian from Township, putting McBride out of the championship match. Her efforts weren’t exhausted, and McBride went on to take third place after overcoming another Township athlete, Scotty Reynolds, in her final dual (6-3, 2-6, 6-3). Nina Kramer and Jessica Chen represented CV in Flight 3 doubles, fighting all the way to the championship match where they fell 8-4 to the Hempfield champs. “It was an historic night for the Lady Bucks,” celebrated head coach Dale Gregg. “They have been supporting each other and pushing each other. It was a tremendous night to watch each one of the six girls perform at a level in order to peak for the tournament.” This week, the team sets their sites on a new challenge, heading into district team competition. GIRLS’ SOCCER League wins over Cedar Crest and Penn Manor brought the CV girls soccer team to a league record of 7-1-1 (overall 10-4-1) heading into their final bout of the regular season-a highly anticipated clash between CV and Hempfield, the top two teams of Section One, but despite double overtimes the contest stayed knotted at 1-1 and no victor was named. The teams met earlier in the season, resulting in a 1-0 Hempfield win, giving the Lady Bucks their only league loss heading into last Thursday’s faceoff. On Monday, the Bucks took down Penn Manor by a 2-1 count, leading the contest from the early minutes thanks to a goal from Adrianna Neiman at the seven-minute mark. Madison Delgado knocked in an

insurance goal early in the second half, assisted by Gabriella Barone-Graybill, to give CV a 2-0 cushion. Turns out, they needed it, as Penn Manor managed to squeeze in a goal of their own three minutes before the final buzzer sounded. Remaining composed, the Bucks maintained control of the contest and ran out the clock to emerge with the win. “We did an excellent job controlling the ball in wet conditions, and getting a win on senior night,” described head coach Keith Nagley. “It was nice to send our seniors off with a win in their last home game. They have done a lot for the program the last four years.” The previous weekend the squad shut out Cedar Crest 2-0, outshooting the Falcons 12-1. The two CV successes came back-toback in the second half, when Delainey Varela-Keen found the netting 44 minutes in, followed by goal from Kayla Weaver just two minutes later. FIELD HOCKEY Last Tuesday, the CV girls hosted Cedar Crest for a 7-0 triumph, a fitting way to mark their final home contest of a remarkable season, before transitioning into playoffs. The underclassman stepped up to
send their six seniors off well. Juniors Abby Morley (three goals, two assists) and Ellie Livingston (two goals, one assist) led the offensive charge, and sophomores Olivia Hess and Sydney Weaver each supplied a goal. The squad still has an exciting postseason ahead of them, but took time to honor the contributions of the six seniors that they will say goodbye to this season- Lillian Baird, Carli Eberly, Maykayla Harting, Hannah Lally, Clair Ortiz, and Kendra Wenger. “Our seniors have been playing CV field hockey since middle school, and have grown into strong players and valuable leaders to our team,” reflected head coach Kelly Dearolf. “I hope they know how appreciated they are, and I am sure they will be very successful in their next chapter of life.” The battle for the Section One title concludes with the Lady Bucks’ final contest of the season, a showdown between the Bucks and the Comets held at Penn Manor. VOLLEYBALL Lady Buck’s volleyball continues to gain momentum, opening last week with back-to-back sweeps. Tuesday, CV made quick work of McCaskey, increasing the point differ-
ential in each of the three sets (25-14, 25-12, 25-8). Service was key, as Savannah Byers and CeCe Leininger combined to dish a dozen aces at a scrambling McCaskey defense. Charlize Miller (19 assists) and Lexi McEvoy (9 kills, 1 block) also teamed up to deliver a relentless Buckskin attack. On Monday, the team pulled out a 3-0 triumph over nonleague opponent Northern Lebanon, (25-15, 25-17, 25-18). McEvoy (6 kills) and Rebecca Hartranft (5 aces) paced the offense, supported by Miller’s 16 assists. Leininger’s 14 digs set the defensive tone, and Miller, McEvoy and Byers each supplied a block. CROSS COUNTRY Both boys and girls cross country teams ended the regular season schedule on a high note, with the boys claiming a win, and the girls getting two, at last Tuesday’s meet hosted by Warwick. The girls registered a team win over both Warwick and Solanco, with six harriers finishing the course in the top 15. Kylynn Frankford blazed the way for CV, turning in a time of 20:58 for a third-place finish. Cruising in just behind her to take fourth and fifth were teammates Kate Kmieczak (21:58) and Kayla Mongiovi (22:00). Brittany Johns took seventh with a time of 22:19, Emily Castronova’s 22:35 claimed ninth, and Annika Bredeman came in 14th (23:16). For the boys, it was a collective win over Solanco, with Emmanuel Gitonga setting the CV pace at 17:22 to clinch second place. Jotham Ngarama crossed in seventh (17:51), while Dante Velasco (18:29) and Jesse Kanagy (18:31) came through just two seconds apart for 10th and 11th respectively. Adam Harris crossed in time to claim the final spot in the top 15, with a time of 18:54. The squad continues to prep for the LL League meet to be held at Ephrata this week. FOOTBALL Bradley Stoltzfus, CV’s quarterback, had a big night at Cocalico on October 4, despite a Buckskin loss to the Eagles, 54-41. Stoltzfus’ passing game garnered 421 yards, including four touchdown passes finding Zach Fisher, Avery Tran, and Derek Ulishney for two. Stoltzfus also ran in an additional two Buckskin touchdowns. There was no shortage of trips to the end zone in the high-scoring contest, and both team’s notched touchdowns in all four quarters. CV matched or bettered the Eagles point accumulation in three-out-of-four quarters, but the opening period held a 21-6 Cocalico run that proved to be the difference in the Buckskin loss.

Apprentices Compete In Annual Competition Five local apprentices received top scores at the ABC Keystone’s annual Craft Competition on Sept. 21 at the chapter’s training facility in Manheim. Earning the top scores in their respective trades provides these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2020 ABC National Craft Competition to be held March 26, 2020, in Nashville, and they will each receive from the chapter an all-expenses-paid trip to the competition. All competitors received Home Depot gift cards. The fourth-year top-scoring apprentices represented five trades: carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal. ABC Keystone has a history of pro-
ducing National Craft Championship medal winners representing the southcentral Pennsylvania area. The 2019 ABC Keystone local Craft Competition top scorers were Jarrad Fulgenzi of Lancaster, sheet metal, Frey Lutz Corp.; Bradley Gerberich of Carlisle, HVAC, Penn State Construction; Sean Herr of Lancaster, electrical, John E. Fullerton Inc.; Jeremy Spangler of Conestoga, plumbing, Haller Enterprises Inc.; and Brandon Thomas of Ronks, carpentry, Warfel Construction Company. The timed competition followed a similar format as the upcoming national competition, and apprentices were challenged
to follow plans to craft projects that tested their skills, knowledge, and attention to safety. The competition has two components: the written test, which counts for 25% of the total score, and the practical hands-on competition, which counts for 75% of the total score. In addition to showcasing their top-quality work, the competitors must also adhere to strict safety standards. The Keystone Chapter’s Pennsylvaniaregistered apprenticeship program offers education in seven trades and focuses on hands-on training under the guidance of experienced instructors. Add in sugar and stir for a couple minutes to dissolve some sugar (all sugar will not be dissolved...be sure to not overcook). Take off heat and pour mixture in a medium-sized bowl. Stir in cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and vanilla. Whisk in eggs, until smooth, then add the flour and chocolate chips, stirring to combine. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
