HayLoft Ice Cream Supports Allegany Boys Camp By Ann Mead Ash

Many area children and their parents will remember visiting HayLoft Candles at 95 S. Groffdale Road, Leola. For years, the location was the site of a petting zoo and a place to buy ice cream treats and scented candles. In the spring, HayLoft Ice Cream, at the same location, became a nonprofit organization raising funds to help troubled boys find success. “We opened May 14 with the sole purpose of supporting the Allegany Boys Camp,” explained Merv Lapp, manager of HayLoft, who added that all the on-site staff except the managers are volunteers. Allegany Boys Camp, located in Oldtown, Md., was founded in 2011 as an expansion of Bald Eagle Boys Camp in Mill Hall, Pa. “They cater to troubled boys ages 9 to 16, and they work with them for up to two years,” said Lapp.

Allegany operates with the understanding that all young men wish to succeed, but that all boys may not have the emotional tools needed to control behavior when faced with challenging events. In a wilderness setting, campers learn how to build their own shelter, where they may live for up to two years. Physical resources to build the structure and firewood for heat and cooking are provided. HayLoft has a structure built by the boys on display so customers can get an idea of how the boys live. “A group of the boys came up here and put that together for us,” noted Lapp. While at Allegany, the boys learn to build relationships as well as shelter. Campers are counseled and supervised by Christian men, and positive peer pressure is encouraged as successes and failures are evaluated. Hands-on learning experiences are offered, along with team-building exercises and support in See HayLoft Ice Cream pg 6

168 N. Groffdale Road, Leola, invites the public to a concert of music performed by the Imchen family on Sunday, Nov. 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. Funds raised will support children’s education in Nagaland, India. For more information, readers may email imchens@outlook.com.

The Stevens Fire Hall, 91 Stevens Road, Stevens, will be the site of a Christmas craft show and holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Available for sale will be holiday wreaths, woodcarvings, crocheted items, flower arrangements, wooden toys, Christmas ornaments, jewelry, and more. Plenty of items will be available to purchase for holiday gift giving. The kitchen will be open. Admission will be free.

Staffers and campers have been enjoying the experience offered by Aaron’s Acres, a camp that celebrates the capabilities of children with special needs, for 20 years. The organization will hold a gala in honor of those two decades of service on Dec. 8. By Ann Mead Ash

“We are celebrating our past and looking to the future,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. “We are where we are because of the community and the support (it provides). It has been an amazing journey,

and it’s because people believe in us.” To celebrate its history and its future, the organization will hold its first gala at the Bolger Conference Center in Gordiner Hall at Millersville University, 40 James St., Millersville, on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. The event has sold out of all 200 tickets. other club members would suggest that they enlist Wetzel’s talents for a benefit concert under the group’s sponsorship. Jacobs and Wetzel quickly agreed, and the Rotary Club of Paradise will present the Travis Wetzel and Friends Bluegrass Experience on Friday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at Conestoga Valley’s Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, 500 Mount Sidney Road, Lancaster. Wetzel, who is originally from Dauphin County, is a musician, songwriter, and vocalist who is popular in the greater Philadelphia and central Pennsylvania area, where he has played at the Kutztown, Reading, and Bethlehem folk festivals. Known for playing genres including jazz, swing, Celtic, Native American, country, and classical, Wetzel has been featured as lead fiddler/violinist on a number of recording projects ranging from country to rock. He performed at the Chet Atkins Convention, and he was selected for a lead part in the Johnny Cash musical “Ring of Fire” at the Roxy Regional Theatre in Clarksville, Tenn. “(Wetzel tours) with Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys of the Grand Ole Opry,” noted Jacobs. “He has been nominated several times for inspirational country musician awards.” Wetzel has also toured in Germany. He has worked with a number of charitable

organizations, and most recently he has been involved with WEGave, an organization that helps veterans to take part in music therapy activities. For the Rotary concert, Jacobs said that Wetzel will give his Bluegrass Experience concert, which will include songs in the bluegrass and gospel styles, along with some Civil War-era songs. In addition to Jacobs on guitar, others performing with Wetzel will include native Pennsylvanians Bob Sutor on banjo and Ron Greenstein on string bass. For this year, the concert will replace the Rotary Club’s Amish Classic bike ride. The ride was held in partnership with Bird-in-Hand Volunteer Fire Company’s the Run, Ride, and Soar event, which included a 5K race; a half marathon; 12-, 23-, and 62-mile bicycle rides; and a hot air balloon fest. The club hopes to possibly organize the Amish Classic again in the future. Funds raised by the concert will aid Rotary in supporting area nonprofit organizations. Currently, the club supports Friendship Community, Christ’s Home, Junior Achievement, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scout Troop 8, North Star Initiative, and The Factory. Readers who wish to purchase general admission tickets to the concert may visit www.paradiserotarypa.com and click on the concert tab under “Upcoming Events.” Tickets may also be available at the door.

Old Zion Church will continue its tradition of holding carol sings this year. Carol sings will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 and 4:30 p.m. This year, Break From Blue Collar, a modern barbershop quartet, will perform and lead both carol sings. Old Zion Church is a historically preserved church located at 187 Reifsnyder Road in Brickerville. The church remains in its original state from 1813, without heat or electricity. Candles and a chandelier lit annually add to the Christmas atmosphere. Attendees should dress warmly and bring flashlights to aid them in returning to their cars. In the event of inclement weather, readers may check www.oldzionchurch.org for cancelation information. For safety reasons, if there is ice or snow on the ground on Dec. 8, the carol sings will be canceled. Free tickets are required. People may request up to six tickets for either service. Ticket requests will be accepted after Thursday, Nov. 15. For information about requesting tickets, readers may visit the aforementioned website. Pictured on front: Break

Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, where it is still held. The most recent six-week camp served 220 children from three counties. “Everyone comes to Manheim now, and we provide transportation from Berks and Dauphin, explained Paskoff. The camp can serve any child regardless of medical or behavioral challenges because Paskoff recruits professional staff, including special education teachers and a nurse, for a 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff-to-child ratio. Looking ahead, Paskoff noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to offer more services for children and adults with special needs. “We are hoping to continue to expand our programs (in the future), said Paskoff. Aaron’s Acres is participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. “We will be at the Harvest Moon Bagel Company from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (that day), said Paskoff, who added that the shop is creating a signature bagel called the Aaron’s Acres bagel, which will be cinnamon flavored with apple pie cream cheese. The special guest speaker for the gala will be Kyle Maynard, who was born with a condition called congenital amputation that left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end near his knees. “When he was born, his parents were told (by experts) that nothing would become of him, said Paskoff. “(But) his parents told him he could do whatever he wanted to. Maynard learned to move without prosthetics, and eventually became a champion wrestler, a CrossFit-certified instructor and gym owner, a competitive MMA/Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter, a world record-setting weightlifter, and a skilled mountaineer. Maynard is also a motivational speaker, bestselling author, entrepreneur, and ESPY award-winning mixed martial arts athlete. Paskoff recalled the genesis of Aaron’s Acres more than 20 years ago, when a group of parents of children with special needs were talking about the need for camping programs for their children. “(I read) this article on Janiece Seldomridge (one of the founding parents), raising her son Aaron, who has autism, explained Paskoff. “In the middle of the article, there were two sentences (about how the) parents were looking to start a camp. At the time, Paskoff had a counseling and therapy practice for children, but her dream was to run programs for children with special needs. “I met with Janiece and Peggy Rosario, who was with Special Kids Network, a program of United Disability Services, said Paskoff. “We held the (first) one-week camp (in 1998) at the Jewish Community Center for 11 children ages 5 to 9. Paskoff said that in 1999, the camp ran for two weeks. Camps later opened opened in Berks County and Dauphin County. Since then, the program has expanded. “(Aaron’s Acres) has grown over the years because of the support and because of what the parents tell us (they want for their children), said Paskoff. “(The parents) wanted school-year programs in addition to camp, so now we have a program during the school year. Recently, parents were concerned because their children aged out of Aaron’s Acres at age 21, so in January 2019, Aaron’s Acres Plus for 22- to 30-year-olds will be offered. When the Jewish Community Center closed in 2014, the camp moved to the

More than 100 vendors will fill the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 17, for the sixth annual Holiday Shopping Fair. The event will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and proceeds will benefit Furever Home Adoption Center and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. “We have a really good mixture of crafters, vendors, and (brick-and-mortar) businesses,” said fundraising coordinator Tina Krueger. For the first time in the history of the event, printed and digital photographs with Santa Claus will be available. The shopping fair is pet-friendly, and the photos will be as well. For a small fee, pets and people may pose with Santa from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “You can have (photo cards) ready for Christmas,” suggested Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. Another first for the event is the addition of a variety of hot and cold foods for people. The menu is being finalized, but it will represent Lancaster County, Krueger

said. “Come hungry,” invited Furever Home executive director MJ Meinzer. The first 100 adult attendees will receive goodie bags. While admission to the shopping fair is free of charge, attendees are asked to bring items to donate to the two organizations. The wish list includes bleach, toilet paper, paper towels, liquid or powder kitten formula, canned kitten food, dry cat food, and dry dog food. “This is the first time we’re actually

having a shortage of dog food,” Sanders remarked. The Pet Pantry routinely distributes pet food to more than 200 households from four locations in Lancaster and Chester counties. To encourage contributions, people who donate items at the shopping fair will be rewarded with entries in a prize drawing. The hosting organizations will also benefit in another way at the event. A company evaluating the user-friendliness of packaging will give a donation to Furever Home and Pet Pantry for each adult

age 50 or older who takes a dexterity test. The proceeds from the shopping fair will be shared between the two organizations, which have begun to work together to meet the needs of cats in Lancaster County. Approximately 110 felines are being cared for by the combined network of foster homes. Furever Home operates a facility at 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, where about 25 cats live without cages as they wait to be adopted. Pet Pantry, located at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, can house approximately 35 cats on-site and runs a veterinary suite and a thrift store as well. Eventually, Pet Pantry would like to move to a new facility where the two organizations could combine efforts under one roof. “We have a lot of duplication of services,” Meinzer explained. Sanders shared that Pet Pantry needs to buy a truck to haul the new mobile unit, which enables veterinarians to offer spay/neuter clinics away from headquarters. Sponsors for the truck are welcome, and Sanders invited folks unable to attend the shopping fair to donate to the Pet Pantry as part of the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. On that day, donations may be made at www.extragive.org. Krueger noted that Furever Home and Pet Pantry are always looking for sponsors, volunteers, and donors. For more information, readers may email Krueger at flippers1@aol.com, call Pet Pantry at 717-983-8878, or call Furever Home at 717-560-6400.

the development of healthy relationships. “They (work at) problem solving as a group,” said Lapp, who described regular meetings called “powwows,” where campers discuss their day and learn to work through problems. “Each camper sets goals to work toward,” added Lapp. Bald Eagle Boys Camp is supported by an eatery in Mill Hall called the Ice Shack, and now Allegany has HayLoft, which sells Italian ice made on the premises, along with 16 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream. “We have soft-serve in vanilla, chocolate, and twist,” said Lapp, who added that gelato, sundaes, milkshakes, and ice shakes are also featured on the dessert menu. The offerings at HayLoft are not restricted to sweet treats, however. “We have salads and yogurt parfaits,” said Lapp, who stated that sandwich wraps and soup will likely be added during the winter months. Soft pretzels are made at the facility, and pretzel sandwich flavors including chicken and ranch, ham and cheese sandwiches, pepperoni, and hot dog are on the menu. In the shop, HayLoft sells a variety of scented candles as in the past, but

other items are available as well, including books, dipping mustards, and old-fashioned types of candy. Outside a duck pond is featured, and visitors may purchase pellets to feed the water fowl. Lapp noted that plans for the location include adding a playground on one corner of the property. HayLoft began the transition to a nonprofit entity when Dave Yoder, who owned the ice cream shop and still owns the building, approached the Allegany Boys Camp board and asked if the group wanted to utilize the building. “It had been the vision of the board to do something like this,” noted Lapp. The Allegany board set up a board of six to oversee the HayLoft project. One of the board members knew Lapp from church and asked if he would consider becoming the manager. According to Lapp, HayLoft is currently open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays, but he added that those hours will probably be adjusted during the winter months. Readers who wish to know more about HayLoft may visit www.hayloftice cream.com or search for “HayLoft Ice Cream” on Facebook.

Rafe Smucker, pastor of the Forgiven Worship Center, smiled as he looked around the new church space that was still under construction in early October. “ We needed more space (because) we are growing,” said Rafe. Forgiven Worship Center, formerly located in the Intercourse Fire Company, held a

grand opening at 11 a.m. on Oct. 14 in the church’s new building at 325 W. Main St., New Holland. Sunday services are held at 11 a.m. each week, and Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. A fellowship meal is held following each service. The nondenominational congregation is a church plant of pastor Sam J. Smucker of Worship Center in Leola. Rafe noted that Sam will preach at the

R024139

church once each year. Forgiven has its roots in a conversation held between Rafe; his wife, Lisa; and his mother, Anna Smucker, a number of years ago. Nancy Petersheim joined as the fourth member of the group, and Rafe began holding Tuesday night church services in his home. More than four years ago, members began gathering at the Paradise Park for Sunday services. In October 2015, the services moved to the Intercourse Fire Company. The new location is less than 5 miles from the Intercourse fire station. The New Holland location features a sanctuary that will seat 175, a kitchen, two large children’s ministry rooms, and a welcome center that is located to the right after entering by the front door. Rafe praised New Holland Borough staff for being cooperative and easy to work with as the church worked to remodel the building from a used appliance concern to a place of worship. He noted that the church and the borough developed a good relationship, for which he is thankful. Rafe emphasized the welcoming atmosphere of the church, especially in response to the heroin epidemic that has affected the county in recent years. “We want to provide a setting where addicts are welcome,” said Rafe, who added that church members

have helped place people in rehab facilities and that he has also buried attendees who succumbed to overdoses. “We are not traditional,” said Rafe. “To someone off the street, (the church is) a hospital,” he said. “One of our elders called this an emergency room for people in crisis.” He added that the church aims to offer the hope of Christ to all who enter. “ We preach the Word and hope to reach (people),” he said. “It’s a tough thing to overcome. I understand.” Rafe noted that the church hopes to attract members from all walks of life. “We’re for anybody and everybody,” he said. “People who have it together can come and stand with us and understand that we are reaching out to the broken … and they have come and stood with us.” According to Rafe, clients of local ministries that help men overcome addiction, including Revelations of Freedom Ministries in Blue Ball, Restart Training Center Ministry in Lancaster, and TTC/Potter’s House, with locations in New Holland and Leola, have attended past services. Readers who would like more information or to hear sermons may visit www.forgivenworship center.org or search for “Forgiven Worship Center” on Facebook or call 717-371-1157.

The members of the ministry team of the Forgiven Worship Center in New Holland, including (from left) pastor Rafe Smucker, Lisa Smucker, Kristie Striver, and assistant pastor Brian Striver, are looking forward to welcoming worshippers to the church’s new location at 325 W. Main St. Services are held each Sunday at 11 a.m., with Sunday school at 10 a.m.

November is set to be a busy month for The GateHouse, whose mission is to restore the human spirit through recovery. On Nov. 1, the organization’s main office moved into the fifth floor of the Griest Building, 8 N. Queen St., Lancaster, and the office’s previous home at 817 N. Cherry St., Lancaster, is being converted into a center for behavioral health services. Members of the public may tour the new headquarters from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, as part of the Extraordinary Give. During The GateHouse’s

ExtraGive Soiree, attendees may enjoy refreshments and learn about the mission, vision, and values the organization has offered since 1972 to Lancaster County residents who struggle with addiction. Then, on Thanksgiving Eve, which is Wednesday, Nov. 21, The GateHouse will host the 39th annual TurkeyThon from 7 p.m. to midnight. According to development manager Rick Yanchuleff, the day before Thanksgiving has historically seen the heaviest usage of drugs and alcohol by folks who are struggling with the emotions and realities of the holiday.

The GateHouse staff members (from left) Kesha-Payne Ward, Kristi Martarano, Sheri Piefly, and Rick Yanchuleff invite folks to visit the Mountville facility for the 39th annual TurkeyThon on Nov. 21. The residential substance abuse treatment organization will welcome online donations through the Extraordinary Give on Nov. 16.

clients move into one of four transitional living houses in Lancaster city. After they graduate from that stage of the program, clients may live on their own while receiving intensive outpatient treatment. Yanchuleff noted that the treatment program is customized to each individual. “They’re not run through a cookie-cutter process, he said. The GateHouse is a nonprofit organization that is not specifically faith-based, but God plays an integral role in the recovery process, Yanchuleff said. Clients participate voluntarily; they are not committed. The GateHouse accepts medical assistance and some insurances as well as safe pay. To offset costs and increase awareness of the organization, Yanchuleff is working to develop a donor base. “Generally, people in recovery know of The GateHouse, but (others) don’t, he remarked. The hope is that through events like the ExtraGive Soiree and TurkeyThon, members of the public will become familiar with The GateHouse and seek out ways to support the organization and its clients. For more information about The GateHouse, readers may visit www.gatehouse.org or call 717393-3215. Folks who would like to donate or volunteer may contact Yanchuleff at rick@gatehouse.org or 717-205-3026.

TurkeyThon was created to celebrate recovery through fun, food, and fellowship. A complete turkey dinner will be served, and AA and NA meetings will be held all evening. Breakout sessions will be held on the hour, and some will have guest speakers. Counselors will be available to speak with guests. Folks may drop in at any time, and there is no charge to participate. Games and other fun activities will be available for children. “It’s a family event, Yanchuleff said. “Addiction affects everyone. The festivities will take place in a large tent set up on the lawn of The GateHouse Mountville, 465 W. Main St., Mountville. Parking will be located across the street in the lots of Froelich Park and Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. The GateHouse is also working to further expand its facilities. Currently, The GateHouse runs a halfway house for approximately 20 men in Lititz and one for about 20 women in Mountville, but a new halfway house will soon be opened in the Rockefeller mansion in Marietta. The new home will have a capacity for 30 women, and the Mountville house will become a facility for men. At all of the houses, clients arrive just after they have completed detox. Once they successfully conclude a 90-day stay, the

The 12-month training program will lead to CDC (Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.) certified dyslexia practitioner 1 (CDP-1). Orton-Gillingham is a structured, sequential approach to multisensory language remediation. Candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree and be willing to commit time to training and afterschool tutoring. All clearances required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, including Act 31, must be submitted prior to the beginning of training. The cost of these background checks will be borne by the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster provided the trainee completes the training. This training program is of value to all teachers, but especially to those in the fields of reading, special education, and ELL. However, a background in the field of education is not required. This program is also ideal for retirees with a love of learning who want to make a difference in the life of a child. The training program is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council and International Dyslexia Association, which sets the standards for rigor and length of training. Requirements consist of commitment to a minimum of 50 lecture hours and a minimum 100 hours of supervised student practicum. For the student practicum, two students are seen for two hours a week after school hours, one-on-one. Required readings and tests are additional requirements. Training will begin in March with projected completion of May 2020, with no classes scheduled in May or August. Trainees may opt to take the training for free, with a materials fee. Graduate credit is also available; trainees would need to enroll in the course to earn six credits. A total of 180 Act 48 hours will be awarded free of charge at the completion of training. For more information and an application, readers may contact the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster at 717-481-5680 or cdclan casterpa@gmail.com. The deadline for submission of a scholarship application is Thursday, Dec. 13.

Law Enforcement Wave Started Municipal law enforcement agencies throughout southcentral Pennsylvania have joined the Pennsylvania State Police and more than 200 municipal agencies to conduct the first targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave through Sunday, Nov. 25. As part of the Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project, the first wave aims to reduce the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave focuses on red light running, the Steer Clear law, tailgating and speeding. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely or practicing other aggressive actions will also be cited.
