Larry Dunlap, who became pastor of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church (BIHUMC) on July 1, was familiar with Route 340 in the Conestoga Valley area of Lancaster County. “My wife and I vacationed here every year,” said Dunlap. “We loved the area.” According to Dunlap, he and his wife, Kathy, would pass BIHUMC, and she would say, “Is there any way you could be appointed to that church?” It was not possible at the time, but after Kathy died of cancer in 2015, Dunlap moved to East Petersburg and began attending Lampeter United Methodist Church. When the pastor position at BIHUMC opened up, After many years of visiting Bird-in-Hand on vacation, Larry Dunlap has Dunlap’s pastor, John Smith, asked the returned there as pastor of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church. Dunlap, See BIHUMC pg 5 who began pastoring the church in July, makes his home in East Petersburg.

Brenda Long, a foster care and adoption supervisor with Bethanna in Lancaster, would like to see county residents broaden their concept of adoption. “Sometimes people think adoption is only for infants and young children, but we want people to know there are a lot of children age 10 and older looking for loving homes,” said Long. Long and other staff members of local adoption organizations who have gathered under the ACLC (Adoption Coalition of Lancaster County) banner hope to change ideas about adoption by holding a special event during November, which is National Adoption Awareness See Free Movie pg 8

FAIRVIEW GROCERIES

Honoring local veterans is very important to local resident Paula Diem. After several years of organizing bus trips to Arlington National Cemetery for the wreath laying held there each December, Diem decided to attend the Quarryville observance in 2018. After witnessing the ceremony, Diem decided the veterans in Pequea Valley deserved the same honor. “I decided I would bring it home,” recalled Diem. The results of Diem’s efforts will culminate with a ceremony at noon on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Gap Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap. Individuals wishing to help place wreaths on more than 1,400 graves in 19 area cemeteries are asked to arrive at the park at 11 a.m. to register to take part. Veterans will be able to register as well. The ceremony will begin with a prayer by Bellevue Presbyterian Church pastor J.T. Holderman. “We will recognize ... Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, along with prisoners of war, and missing in action,” said Diem. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to the approximately half-hour ceremony. Following the ceremony, organizers will explain how volunteers are to proceed in laying wreaths at an assigned cemetery. Area cemeteries will include Ashbury, Bellevue Presbyerian, Calvary Monument, Carpenter’s Grave Yard, Hershey Mennonite, Intercourse United Methodist, Kinzers Mennonite Cemetery, Limeville United Methodist, Mount Zion Methodist, Old Leacock, Paradise Mennonite/All Saints, Paradise Presbyterian, Pequea Baptist, Pequea Evangelical Congregational, Pequea Presbyterian, Mount Airy Evangelical, Sadsbury Friendship Meeting, St. John Epsicopal, and St. John United Methodist. Diem noted that helpers will include members of the Gap Town Clock Lions Club, Paradise Lions Club, Intercourse Lions Club, Word Up Ministries, and Paradise Boy and Girl Scout troops, along with community members. “A group of veterans from Johnson and Johnson in Lititz will place the wreaths at the Old Leacock Presbyterian Church on Route 340,” noted Diem. “They (held) a breakfast on Veterans Day to help pay for the wreaths for that cemetery.” The wreaths will be delivered to the Gap fire hall prior to Dec. 14, and students from Pequea Valley High School will unload the truck. On Dec. 14, members of all the fire companies in Pequea Valley will bring the boxes of wreaths to the cemeteries on fire trucks. Paradise Township will recycle all the cardboard boxes. Diem explained that on Saturday, Jan. 11, those who placed the wreaths are asked to help retire them. Salisbury Township will recycle the wreaths. Diem began her efforts to bring Wreaths Across America to the area in January, when she began counting all the cemeteries where veterans were buried. “I enlisted friends and we went out to count cemeteries,” said Diem, who had originally estimated there might be 500 graves, far short of the actual 1,450. Next, she met with Gap VFW Post 7418 because she needed to list the organization on her Wreaths Across America application. “They were excited to join,” recalled Diem. “I told them, ‘This is our way of saying thank you,’ and that brought one man to tears.” Her first petition to Wreaths Across America’s home office in Maine was sent in early May. “It was returned because most people only petition for one cemetery,” said Diem, who then explained to the organization’s representatives that she did not feel it was fair to only place wreaths at one cemetery. After obtaining permission from each cemetery to place

The effort will place more than 1,400 wreaths on the graves of area veterans. wreaths there, her application was granted on June 1. Diem set about fundraising to cover the cost of the wreaths, holding a paint party and basket bingo and asking local businesses for donations. She said she is especially thankful to Beiler Insurance Agency and Shivery Funeral Home for their help with her efforts. “Many of the people buried at Bellevue and the other 18 cemeteries don’t have family anymore, so we are their family,” said Diem. “We really believe in our heritage here and that our veterans are important. It is a community event that is for our community to express how much the veterans mean to us.” There is a nominal cost to purchase a wreath to be placed on a veteran’s grave. Those wishing to sponsor a wreath may call Diem at 717-587-1315 by Saturday, Nov. 30.

BIHUMC from pg 1 UMC district superintendent if Dunlap might fill it. “The district superintendent called me and asked if I would be interested in BIHUMC,” recalled Dunlap, who added that the superintendent offered to give Dunlap a day to think about the offer. “I told him I didn’t need one,” said Dunlap. “I think my wife went to the Lord and said, ‘I want you to tell the bishop to send my husband to this church.’” Dunlap first received the call to ministry in the early 1970s. “My father was a minister,” shared Dunlap. “I was helping him serve Communion, and while I was holding the tray of Communion cups, I sensed the Lord saying, ‘Larry, this is where I want you to be.’” At that time, Dunlap’s father was serving in Kings Park on Long Island. After Dunlap finished high school, he went to Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., where he majored in radio communications. Following college, he went to St. Paul School of Theology, then in Kansas City, Mo. The first church he pastored was located in Quarryville, N.Y. He met his wife there, and they married in 1981. Their first son, Chester, was born a year later, and they had two more sons, Drew and Adam. Over the years, Dunlap served congregations in a number of areas in New York and Connecticut. He also served as chaplain of the East Quogue Fire Department, organized a Meals on Wheels program, hosted “The Rock of Jesus” radio program on WRIV-AM, and raised funds for a homeless shelter, among many other activities. He is Stephen Ministry trained, and he currently volunteers at Lampeter UMC running the media board and editing the newsletter. His approach to pastoring BIHUMC is a little different than might be expected when a congregation consists of mostly retired people. “There is a train of thought in church growth that you have to go after younger families and have a strong children’s program,” said Dunlap, who believes that church growth should be tailored to the congregation. “I took a course on church growth,” said Dunlap, who took note of a case study on older churches in the course material. He said that instead of trying to attract young families, the church members in the case study focused on retired people. They planned activities that involved things retired people like to do, including taking trips, watching movies, square dancing, and shopping. “Their friends started coming, and they started inviting friends,” said Dunlap. “The church began to grow because they were attracting retired people. That’s my approach with BIHUMC.” BIHUMC is located at 2620 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Worship is held each Sunday at 9 a.m. A Bible study is held immediately following the service. More information about the church may be found at https://bihumc.com.

SWAN from pg 1 trauma suffered by the children of the incarcerated offenders he was working with. “My husband was doing a lot of pastoring with criminal offenders, and I was starting to see the families up close and seeing how devastating parental incarceration was for children,” said Diana, who asked herself what she could do to help. “I thought music would be a great way to help them, and that’s what I had to give. I

saw (music) was healing for them (and helped them) to realize they weren’t the only ones (struggling with this issue).” The result was SWAN, a one-hour after-school music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Both group and private lessons are now held in 13 SDoL schools. SWAN also has a summer camp, which meets at the Wharton Business School in Lancaster. “We give the children 120 hours of

instruction during camp,” said Diana, who noted that once the SDoL recognized the need for the program, SWAN was welcomed into the schools. “The district is becoming more trauma informed and trauma aware,” said Diana, who added that recent state laws will require teachers to become more trauma informed. Currently, SWAN receives referrals of students whose parents have a history of incarceration from intervention specialists and family counselors who work for the district. Each Tuesday at 3 p.m., Lauren Reyes, a SWAN music educator, meets with about 10 students at Wickersham Elementary. Her hour with the group includes singing and working with instruments such as hand drums, drumline instruments, guitars, and ukuleles. “What Lauren is bringing this year is a program that uses melody and percussion along with singing,” said Diana. Reyes said that she wants to promote improvisation and collaboration to encourage students to create. “I try to get a good community working together,” she said, noting that the approach she uses is multicultural. Anny, a fifth-grade Wickersham student who attends, said that she enjoys SWAN because she is with others who enjoy the same things she does. She also appreciates how participating in the musical program affects her outlook. “I like that music can change your mood,” she said. “If someone is sad, music can brighten up their day.”

Willow, who is in first grade, called SWAN “a magical place.” “I have always liked music, and I like to be in programs,” said Willow, who listed a number of instruments she has had a chance to play through SWAN. Willow added that she likes to perform, even though she may be a little nervous to start. “After I perform, I feel happy and I am ready to enjoy the rest of my day and think about this wonderful memory,” she said. “It makes me feel confident and gives me courage.” Diana explained that performance is an important part of the program, noting that participants perform for family, friends, and community members in settings like schools, nursing homes, and First Friday events. One of SWAN’s first students is now helping to teach others. Bryanna Still, who is now a student at Dayspring Christian Academy, has dealt with a lot of trauma, but she has excelled musically. “She has made wonderful decisions,” said Diana of Bryanna, who assisted at the SWAN summer camp and won accolades from the instructors. “We can help children with their behavior, physical, emotional, scholastic, and social issues if we understand what is going on in their lives,” said Diana. “Their present circumstances do not need to determine who they are or what they do.” Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org.

items. There will also be a silent auction. The event will also feature items contributed by Luther Acres residents. The bazaar will feature an array of donated jewelry for sale, as well as many crafts, including knitted and crocheted items. There will also be many baked goods - from home-baked cakes and cookies to candy and other goodies - for sale in the Pub, located across the hall on Luther Acres’ Main Street of the Towne Center. Baked goods from Luther Acres residents frequently sell out before the end of the bazaar, so customers are encouraged to shop early. The Luther Acres store will be open during the bazaar hours, offering a variety of items and refreshments for purchase. This fundraising event enables the Residents’ Council to fulfill its commitment to various causes. The majority of the funds will be directed toward the Luthercare Caring Fund. In conjunction with the bazaar, a pancake breakfast will be served in Katy’s Grill in the Towne Center from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Nov. 23. Hosted by the Friends of Luther Acres, the breakfast will feature pancakes, sausage, and juice for a set fee.

Luther Acres residents invite the public to stop by the community, located in Lititz, to attend a Holiday Bazaar on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22, and 23. Those coordinating areas of the bazaar include (from left) Tom Wingenroth, Tom Johnston, and Larry Young, woodworking; Alice Murray, vendors and crafts; Lenoir Wible, bake sale; Susanne Wragg, gifts; and Brenda Jacobson, jewelry.
