SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Columbia Food Bank Supports Community he past year has been a trying one for the Columbia Food Bank, but the organization has never wavered in its support of the community, said Danielle Peters, director. “This is a year when everybody is in need,” she remarked. “We’re seeing people who have never been to a food bank in their life. We want people to know, if you come to our door, no matter where you’re from, you’re going to walk out with groceries.” The Columbia Food Bank operates out of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St. It is open 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. “Clients can come to us once a month,” Peters said, noting that an ID is all that is needed to receive food. “We prepack the groceries for them, and we give people everything they would receive at the grocery store - breakfast foods, lunch foods, dinner foods, snacks. We’re fortunate to be able to supply meat, cheese, butter and eggs as well.”
T
The food bank serves mostly the Columbia, Mountville, West Hempfield, Manor Township and Washington Boro areas, although Peters said clients have come from all over central Pennsylvania. She noted that in 2019, the food bank gave away approximately 66,000 pounds of food, while in 2020, that number grew to 70,000 pounds.
“We want people to know, if you come to our door, no matter where you’re from, you’re going to walk out with groceries.” The organization is a nonprofit and receives its support through food and monetary donations from the community. This past year, food donations were down due to closings of offices and other businesses that might normally hold food drives, Peters noted.
Submissions Sought For Mental Health Blog
Danielle Peters, director of the Columbia Food Bank, said the need for food has never been greater in the local community.

That’s the hope behind a new blog launched on Mental Health America of Lancaster County’s website. The organization created its new website, https://mhalancaster.org, in November 2020, and it launched the blog in January. See Blog pg 5

More information is available by visiting www.GoRedFor Women.org, clicking on “Research under “Get Involved and clicking “Join thousands of women in the fight against heart disease. To treat, beat and prevent heart disease and stroke, women should understand their family health history and know their five key personal health numbers, which help determine risk for heart disease and stroke. These numbers are total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. Additionally, women should make healthy behavior changes like moving more, eating smart and managing their blood pressure. Women should know the warning signs of heart attacks and strokes. Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soonto-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers. God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom. The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the

including physicians and counselors, personal stories and a creative category. For this last category, Thompson emphasized that the blog could include a variety of submissions. “Not everybody connects with words,” she explained. “If somebody wants to send in art, like photography or paintings ... we’re OK with that, too.” Thompson already has five or six submissions for the blog and said that anyone who is interested in contributing can get help to get started. “We have a list of topics if you’re not sure what to write about,” she stated. “We can give you some prompt sentences to give you a boost as a way to start writing. You don’t have to keep going on that topic, but it might get your creative juices flowing.” Submissions will be vetted by the organization, and Thompson is hoping to post weekly to the blog. “ When you have people out there in the world telling their personal stories, that helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” she remarked. “You can see that here is a human being who is living with this diagnosis, but she is still going to work, still feeding
her family, still contributing to society. These personal stories can help other people learn what it’s like to live with anxiety or to be bipolar, for example.” Thompson said the blog has a personal connection because she’s the mother of a 20-year-old son who has bipolar disorder. She started writing about her experiences as a parent when he was in middle school, and her writing was shared with other parents. “I know that personal stories can help other people,” she stated. “And if personal stories are engaging, people are more likely to read the educational information on our website and more likely to want to learn more.” For more information about submitting material to the blog, readers may contact Thompson at cthompson@mhalancaster.org.
For the first workshop series, DreamWrights will use a selection of Aesop’s Fables to teach participants about the various aspects of putting on a production. “They’ll be doing everything from gathering props and costumes to working on lights and sound and acting,” explained Kate Harmon, marketing coordinator. She added that participants will also learn about voice-over work using the facility’s new recording studio. “At the end of the workshop, we’ll record the production to show to friends and family,” she said. The second series of workshops will introduce participants to the audition process. “We have heard a lot over the years that people are interested in doing audition workshops,” Harmon remarked, noting that the series will focus on two upcoming shows, “Shrek” and
DreamWrights is holding winter workshops. “Usually by this time, we’re well into our first and second productions of the year,” Harmon said. “This year, because of COVID, we’re delaying our season, but this is giving us a way to stay active and still have people here in a safe way.” She encourages anyone with an interest in theater to sign up for the workshops, which are open to children and adults. Scholarships are available as well. Class sizes will be kept small, and both mask wearing and social distancing will be enforced, Harmon noted. “We’re all looking for things to do and something to make us smile and laugh and be around other people,” she said, “and this is a great opportunity to do that in a safe environment.” For more information on the workshops, readers may visit https://dreamwrights.org.

It doesn’t mean you’ll get a role in the show. You’ll still have to audition, but it will give people an idea of what to expect at the audition and to be prepared.” The audition workshop offers an opportunity for DreamWrights to fulfill part of its mission, Harmon noted. “We have a lot of kids who come in to audition having never memorized lines, never been on stage before,” she stated. “We’re an educational nonprofit, so that is not a problem for us, but this will give them a little more confidence when they audition, if they’ve already been working on a particular show for weeks.” This is the first time

“A lot of our website is education-based,” said Caryn Thompson, marketing coordinator for Mental Health America of Lancaster County. “What we’re trying to do with the blog is complement that with personal stories. As far as mental health goes, it’s a topic that’s not just about facts and figures. We can tell you all the stats in the world, but that is not always going to get our point across. Sometimes, the experience of other people educates just as much.” The blog is being written by in-house writers, including Thompson, but will also be open to community submissions. Pathways Program Helps Youths Deal With Loss Teens, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one and would like to meet with other young people who are going through the same thing, activities offered by the Coping Kids & Teens Program of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, the bereavement program for Hospice & Community Care, might be right for you. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the
evenings. To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups. Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.”
The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief Clubs and Camp Chimaqua. The clubs are school-based groups run by trained staff members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a oneday event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is required before participating in any of the Coping Kids & Teens Program activities. Parents or guardians may call 717-391-2413 or 800-9247610 to schedule a conversation with Kulas or a staff person, who will do an assessment to ensure the program will meet their family’s needs. Sometimes, young people are referred to therapists. “They can continue their therapeutic support while working on their grief,” Kulas commented.
All programs are run in English, but Spanish language translation and materials are available. ASL interpretation has been provided in the past and may be again upon request. And if a teenager or adult has questions, program staff members are happy to help. “We will talk with them over the phone, give them ideas to start off with, and share resources with them,” Kulas said. For more information about available services, readers may visit www.hospice andcommunitycare.org/grief -and-loss/children-teen.
“I knew you would help with rental assistance and emergency aid, but I didn’t know you would help with Christmas,” a mother exclaimed when Santa Claus - neighboring volunteer Phil Bergey in disguise - visited six family clients of Bridge of Hope Lancaster. Director Audrey Metzler noted that the visits were a surprise for the children, but the mothers were just as excited. Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Bridge of Hope Chester County work with families facing homelessness, providing comprehensive case management and neighboring, a connection between a family and a group of volunteers from a local church. The church that houses the food bank has faced some building issues, and it’s likely the organization will need to find a new home in the future, Peters noted. But thanks to community support and a team of volunteers, the food bank continues to serve anyone who needs it. “When you need help, you need help. There’s no shame in that,” Peters said. “If you were baking a cake and you needed an egg, wouldn’t you go next door to a neighbor and ask for one? We like to think of ourselves as that neighbor. Food Bank Continues To Serve The Region Museum Continues
STEM Programming
Pandemic response programming developed by the North Museum of Nature and Science attained a milestone shortly before Christmas, exceeding a reach of more than one million households. This program is designed to address the emerging educational needs which students, parents, and educators are facing. North Museum @ Home is the e-learning portal and curriculum designed to assist students, parents, and teachers. The program is science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) focused; multi-faceted; and mapped to Next Generation Learning Standards. It consists of downloadable STEM Learning Activity Packs which provide hands-on educational experiences for multiple subjects, including oceans, geology, nature, dinosaurs, space, agriculture, and more. STEM boxes are a companion to activity packs for educational activities and games. A monthly subscription service was launched in mid-
December for children to receive new educational resources by mail. Young learners also have access to many in-house education programs, presented virtually, like field trips and live animal room feedings. Another feature is STEM Storytime @ Home, a virtual book experience for children with STEM related themes. Programming also includes access to the museum’s YouTube channel and the North Museum @ Home Facebook group. The North Museum continues to seek funding from community members and local businesses to support its pandemic response programming, as some local school districts have continued to operate with 100% virtual learning models to help combat the spread of COVID-19. For more information on the North Museum’s programs, readers may visit www.northmuseum.org. Act, and there was extra funding and food that came from the USDA and our state Department of Agriculture,” he noted. From the start of the pandemic, the food bank began to prepare for a long-term crisis. “Back in March, we knew it would be big, and we started sending out (donation) letters and we received immediate response,” Arthur stated. “Our appeals for extra help have (resulted in) a lot of generosity. It has been inspiring the response we have received from people, foundations and businesses that are doing OK.” The community is invited to continue to help the food bank through donations or by volunteering to help sort and pack food. Since in-person food drives are currently suspended, people may take part in a virtual food drive by visiting www.centralpafood bank.org/ways-to-give/give -funds/virtual-food-drive. Arthur said that area residents should also support their local food banks in the next few months, when the need is especially strong. “We call it the ‘heat or eat’ season - when people decide whether to buy food or pay their heating bill,” he added. This holiday season, in partnership with Fig Magazine, the Lancaster Office of Promotion, Discover Lancaster, and the Lancaster City Alliance, decorated trees were placed in businesses throughout Lan-

when the pandemic arrived in the local area, the food bank has seen its numbers steadily increase. “Last year in a typical month we served about 135,000 people through all of our partners. During COVID, a typical month is (serving) 200,000 people,” said Joe Arthur, executive director. “The vast majority of those folks that came for help last year was directly related to COVID - job loss, losing (work) hours and the economic impact.” He noted that, with safety in mind, the food bank and its partners began distributing food in a drive-up format.
