Murder and mystery abound in “Little Shop of Horrors”
BY CATHY MOLITORISIf you come to see “Little Shop of Horrors” at Eastern York High School, be prepared to laugh while also taking home an important lesson.
“I think the message of this show is that you don’t need to change yourself for people to like you,” said Lillian Cichocki, a senior who plays Seymour in
“We all work really well together, which makes bringing these characters to life fun.”
the show. “Sometimes, what you were looking for was right in front of you the entire time, and if you waste too much time trying to fix the world around you, you become blind to what you could have had all along and miss your chance. Even if life is hard, the best thing you can do is keep being yourself no matter what.”
The Eastern York Broadway Knights will present “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7 p.m. from Thursday, April 4, through Saturday, April 6, with an additional performance at 2:30 p.m. on April 6.
Set in rundown place called Skid Row, the musical follows
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to
focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their childrenCharlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’”
Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
continuing to support local businesses and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”

“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer. “We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital solutions for clients, while

an awkward botanist, Seymour Krelborn, as he handles unrequited love for his co-worker, Audrey, while also tending to a very unusual plant. “When a strange, sassy plant shows up and turns his life around, it tests Seymour’s limits of what he is really willing to do for love in a riveting story of murder and mystery,” Lillian shared.
Eastern York’s production will feature a cast, crew and pit orchestra of about 70 students.
Junior Caris Rolph, who plays Audrey, said rehearsing the show has been fun but also challenging, as the cast learned to work around an ever-growing plant, operated by puppeteers. Caris also noted that audiences can expect to see good chemistry on stage, adding, “We all work really
well together, which makes bringing these characters to life fun.”
For Corbett Hilt, a senior who portrays flower-shop owner Mr. Mushnik, the show has provided an opportunity to have fun on stage while putting together an entertaining finished product.
“This production is full of little jokes and puts a little funny twist on a horror-themed atmosphere,” Corbett said. “Viewers can definitely expect lots of laughs and plot curveballs.”
Tickets for “Little Shop of Horrors” can be purchased at the Broadway Knights website, https://tinyurl .com/5742zsx5, or at the door. The show will be held in the Eastern York Performing Arts Center, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville.

Auction will support Marietta Community House
BY CATHY MOLITORISFor more than 100 years, the Marietta Community House has served as a hub for organizations, special events and community programs. The nonprofit will hold a fundraiser to support its mission, and you’re invited.
A Spring Evening in Marietta Benefit Auction will be held in the rear studio of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta, on Saturday, April 27, from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
The evening will begin with a cocktail hour and appetizers as guests enjoy live music by Leo DiSanto and peruse items available in a silent auction. The event will also feature a sitdown dinner followed by a live auction.
“We are working with Joe Hess, Cracked Pepper Catering from Lancaster,” said Audrey Kushner Pombo, auction chair and treasurer of the Marietta Community House, noting that the menu will include salad, roasted chicken breast and seasonal
sides, with a vegan/vegetarian option available as well. “Desserts will be an assortment of different sweet treats provided by Kristen’s Katering in Columbia.”
Auction items will include photography sessions; a round of golf for four people; tickets to local theaters, restaurants and attractions; and stays at local Airbnbs.
“We will have unique artwork from local artists as well as vintage Marietta items,” Kushner Pombo said, adding that there will be giveaways for various baskets, including a champagne-themed basket and a Bloody Mary basket. “Plus, we have a wine pull, cheese pull and table arrangement pull where you can purchase
a ticket for the items.”
This is the fifth year for the event, and proceeds will support ongoing maintenance projects at the property as well as the organization’s Children’s Fair and annual Veterans Day celebration.
Kushner Pombo encourages people to come out to support the Marietta Community House. “It’s truly a great evening of community camaraderie, mingling with neighbors and friends during a lovely dinner and a competition of live auction items,” she said.
Tickets for the event may be purchased at https:// mariettacommunityhouse .org. The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, April 5.
