Exhibit will combine color, texture and mystery

When Mount Bethel Cemetery hosts its annual art exhibit this year, a prolific local artist will be in the spotlight.

The work of Janette Toth-Musser will be showcased during Columbia’s Fourth Friday, April 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the cottage on the cemetery grounds, 700 Locust St., Columbia. The exhibit, which is free to attend, and which will feature light refreshments, will also be open on Sunday, April 28, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Toth-Musser graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1981. Since then, she has worked in the field of advertising and

other art-related employment in several capacities, including as a fashion illustrator, freelance artist and scenic painter. She has been exhibiting her work since 1992 in the Lancaster, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia areas.

The Mount Bethel exhibit will combine two of Toth-Musser’s favorite mediums.

“This exhibit features an assortment of my paintings combined with photographs I recently rediscovered that I’d taken at Mount Bethel Cemetery,” Toth-Musser shared. “They are photos of actors that were gathering for a dress rehearsal in the 2006 production of ‘Ghosts of Columbia: A Haunted Lantern Tour,’ produced and directed by

Janet Wood.”

Toth-Musser’s original plan was to feature some of the photos in the exhibit, but as she was preparing the show, her husband, Jerry Musser, suggested displaying some of Toth-Musser’s paintings alongside the photographs.

“The result is an interesting blend of color, texture and mystery,” Toth-Musser said. “The exhibit is a mix of these newly combined visuals along with my traditional paintings.”

For a unique twist on recycling, head to the Trashion Fashion Avant Garb Show, an event where participants walk the runway in one-of-a-kind creations. The event will be held on Saturday, April 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Switchboard Studios & Gallery, 40 N. Third St., second floor, Columbia.

“This event is a fashion show where all entries are created by hand from items that are recycled, repurposed or reused with the emphasis on using items that might end up in the trash,”

explained Kim Morrow, event coordinator.

This is the third year for the show, which is hosted by Columbia Creative Factory, Columbia Movers and Shakers Society and KiMorroWorks. Beginning at 6 p.m., contestants will show off their creations to a panel of judges who will decide the winners in three age categories - age 10 and under, ages 11 to 17 and age 18 and above. The winners in each category will receive a handmade recycled crown and a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant.

Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. The low-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.

“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”

According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.

“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In

fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.

“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

To promote recycling and celebrate Earth Day, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is sponsoring a Recycled Art Contest for York County High School students. Participating schools include Central York High School, Chrisitan School of York, Dallastown Area High School, Eastern York High School, Hanover Public High School, Kennard-Dale High School, Red Land High School, Susquehannock High School and York Catholic Senior High School. Sixty students are participating. Contest works will be on display at the York County Agricultural and Industrial Museum at 217 W. Princess St., York. Earth Day is a worldwide annual event celebrated on Monday, April 22, to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The first Earth Day, held in 1970, was founded by United States Sen. Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in, similar to a general education forum. In 1990, the event became global with 141 nations participating. Today, it is estimated that more than 192 countries continue to celebrate Earth Day each year.

This is the ninth year YCSWA has conducted a recycled art contest for high school students. YCSWA facilitates responsible waste management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction, education, recycling and resource recovery.

Museum in Hershey as well as in several locations of Bass Pro Shops. In Columbia, she created a historically inspired mural at the rear of 301 Locust St. and a vintage-inspired mural for Hinkle’s Restaurant, located at 261 Locust St.

Never one to shy away from unique painting experiences, Toth-Musser has also lent her creativity to two decorative painted pianos in Columbia, sponsored by Create Columbia. One features blue Delft folk patterns and can be found in the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St. The other highlights the timeline of Hinkle’s Egg Dye and the restaurant.

scenic artist for American Music Theatre in Lancaster. Her studio work is represented by Garth Gallery in Columbia. Several of Toth-Musser’s paintings are in the collection of Lancaster General Hospital, the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute and Penn State Health Lancaster, as well as in numerous private collections.

Performing arts camp slated

Children who enjoying singing and have hopes to someday perform on stage are invited to take part in a Discover Your Voice Camp being offered by Sopranojam Music Studio. The camp was created for students ages 8 to 14 with limited to no experience.

Discover Your Voice Camp is an eight-day performing arts camp that utilizes a signature program to help singers build confidence. There are no auditions, and every participant will have a feature performance. Sessions

“Be a community supporter of our children and have an evening of fun in the process,” Morrow said. “The event is about having fun and supporting the creators, so please support them by coming to the event.”

Along with providing an evening of entertainment, the Trashion Fashion Avant Garb Show is a benefit for local organizations. “The past two years, we have been able to make a $400 donation per year to the Columbia Boys and Girls Club,” Morrow said. “This year, we will be making a donation to The Edible Classroom, which teaches sustainability and the value of free food to our children.” Sponsors and ticket sales help make a donation possible, she stated.

Youth event to focus on outdoor activities

Lancaster County Sportsmen for Youth will host the 29th annual Youth Field Day on Saturday, June 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 742 Hollow Road, New Providence.

The event offers kids ages 10 to 15 opportunities to engage in outdoor activities. During the event, activities will include archery, canoeing, fish/fly fishing, muzzleloading, .22 rifle, trapping, trap shooting, turkey, and

waterfowlers. The Pennsylvania Game Commission will give a presentation.

This event is free and includes a free lunch. All equipment will be provided, and attendees do not need to bring any gear. Parents may accompany their children if they wish.

United Way slates Trike Race

Storm drain art project announced

United Way of Lancaster County will hold its 2024 Trike Race on Tuesday, May 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Stormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The registration fee includes a five-member team spot on the racing bracket and five admission tickets to the Lancaster Stormers’ game at 6:30 p.m. as well as complimentary food and drinks.

Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Stewards in York, in partnership with the City of York, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and the Watershed Alliance of York, are launching the 2024 Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Contest, a project to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on the waterways. Each painted storm drain will contain an environmental message connecting stormwater runoff, storm drains and water pollution.

Arbor Day program slated

The Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission, the Columbia Tree Society, and the Columbia Park Rangers will sponsor the 32nd annual Arbor Day program on Friday, April 26, at 6 p.m. at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The event will take place rain or shine.

Columbia Borough manager Mark Stivers will serve as master of ceremonies, and Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from Troop and Pack 35 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The program will also include a proclamation by Columbia Borough Mayor Leo Lutz, remarks by Columbia Borough Council president Heather Zink, recognition of the coloring and photography contest winners, the presentation of Tree Society certificates and awards, and recognition of memorial tree plantings. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Forestry will present the Tree City USA Award. Additionally, the Columbia High School concert choir will provide music, Columbia High School senior Alexandria Gamby will recite “Trees,” and Jeffrey Jr. and Carolyn McMillen will offer the recessional.

Shelties will shine at Mayfest

This year, the annual Mayfest celebration in Maytown will go to the dogs but in a very cute way. Bonnie Frank will present two demonstrations of dog agility as part of the festivities on Saturday, May 4. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in historic Maytown; Frank’s dogs will demonstrate their skills at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Frank, a Maytown resident, has been participating in dog agility competitions with her pups since 2000. She learned about the activity after attending a trial in Reading with a friend. “I was enthralled, but I said, ‘This is cool. I’ll never be able to do that,’” she recalled with a laugh.

Fast forward two decades and Frank has not only competed; she’s succeeded. She’s been to national competitions with five different dogs, qualifying in each event.

Currently, Frank competes with 6-year-old Ginny and 2-year-old Rhys. Both dogs are Shelties.

At Mayfest, she hopes to entertain audiences as people watch the dogs in action.

“I’ll set up a very small course, and it’s just for entertainment purposes,” she said. “I’m not going to talk about how to train your dog. I’m not some big expert. It’s just fun to watch.”

Before and after Frank’s demonstrations, Mayfest will feature activities for people of all ages, said Linda Good, vice president of the Maytown Historical Society.

“We do Mayfest every year to keep people interested and get new people interested in the history of Maytown,” she explained. “Maytown is an old town, and lots of historical events happened here. We’re trying to re-create and

highlight as many as we can.”

More than 80 vendors and many food trucks will be featured at Mayfest, along with a scavenger hunt that will take participants to historic places in Maytown. The Maytown Historical Society Museum, 4 W. High St., will host a display from local artist Delores Hackenberger. Guided bus tours of some of the town’s historic buildings and sites will be offered, and a variety of displays will be set up for viewing, including ones highlighting school yearbooks, pillowcases and blankets made by the Donegal Intermediate School (DIS) sewing club and artwork by DIS students.

Children’s games and chalk drawing will be featured, and there will be a cake walk as well as demonstrations of various historic crafts. Live music will entertain visitors to Mayfest, and a local woodcarver will offer demonstrations. A 2 p.m., a wedding ceremony of a local couple will be featured.

Ye Olde Shenk’s Store Bake Shop and a penny candy stand will sell sweet treats. Siegrist Automotive on River Street will hold a car show during Mayfest, and the Maytown museum will feature several Model T’s on display on High Street.

Costumed students from DIS will participate in a traditional maypole dance as well.

Proceeds from Mayfest will benefit the Maytown Historical Society. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Good. Activities will take place along King Street and in the areas around the museum. West High Street will be closed to traffic for the event. Bowling fundraiser to benefit A Place for Jacob

A Place for Jacob will hold a bowling family fundraiser on Saturday, April 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at East Lincoln Lanes, 5761 Lincoln Highway, York. The ticket cost will include bowling and shoes. Refreshments will be available.

There will also be a sale of baked goods and an opportunity for attendees to win prizes.

Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization, which has plans to provide a group home for adults with autism.

First Capital FCU employee finds kidney donor

First Capital Federal Credit Union (FCU) recently announced that Lorie Hagar, an employee who was looking for a living kidney donor, has found her match.

Hagar’s story began nine years ago when she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Her diagnosis could have gone a few different ways: treat the disease and it goes away; live with kidney disease the rest of her life; or the disease progresses, and she needs a kidney transplant.

In February 2022 her doctor told her it had progressed to Stage 5, and it was time to start the transplant process. In November 2022, she was placed on the deceased donor transplant list, which is the first step in finding a donor. However, the wait time for a deceased donor kidney can be five or six years. That’s why Hagar started looking for a living donor kidney.

In April of 2023, First Capital FCU shared Hagar’s story with the York community and put up yard signs around its branches, and Hagar was even gifted billboard space for four weeks from Lamar

Advertising.

With April being National Donate Life Month, First Capital FCU shared that on Jan. 4, Hagar received a new kidney from a living donor. Now, she is back to work and feeling great.

National Donate Life Blue & Green Day was held on April 12. First Capital FCU staff wore blue and green that day to show their support for Hagar and to help increase awareness around the importance of organ donor registration.
