Columbia To Hold Arbor Day Celebration he Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission and the Columbia Tree Society will celebrate Arbor Day at Locust Street Park, Sixth and Locust streets, on Friday, April 30, beginning at 6 p.m. “Arbor Day is a celebration of springtime and renewal and an appreciation for nature and trees as they provide beauty when they blossom this time of year,” said Bill Kloidt, chairman of the Arbor Day celebration. “It is also a time to inform everyone of the importance of trees in our environment.” Mark Zeamer, secretary and treasurer of the Old Columbia Public Grounds Company, which has overseen and maintained the Locust Street Park since 1826, will serve as master of ceremonies. Additional speakers will be featured, including Rick Hartlieb of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry, who will present Columbia with its 29th consecutive Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA award.

T

Since last year’s Arbor Day celebration was canceled due to the pandemic, those who were to receive awards last year will be recognized with award winners this year. Musical selections will be played throughout the ceremony by the Columbia High School chorus under the direction of Rick Jensen. Cub Scout Pack 35 and Boy Scout Troop 35 will serve as the color guard to open the event, and Frontier Girls Troops 191 and 202 will assist in the distribution of programs. This year’s ceremony will be dedicated to Dean Little and Clarissa Wolcott. Barry Ford will also be recognized for his contributions to the Columbia Boys Athletic Association and the Columbia Borough School District. Columbia High School senior Emma Grove will recite Joyce Kilmer’s poem “Trees.” Emma is the daughter of Alegra and Christopher Grove. After graduation, she plans to attend a four-year university on a pre-med track, specializing in pediatric emergency medicine.

There is a simple way to support local agriculture in York County, and it starts at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. The Horn Farm, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer its community-supported agriculture (CSA) program for the fifth year this summer, inviting members to purchase weekly boxes of locally grown, farm-fresh produce. “As a CSA member, or ‘shareholder,’ customers can expect to enjoy a wide variety of seasonal, organically grown produce such as greens - lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard and kale (and) tomatoes, sweet peppers, garlic, beets, summer and winter squash and potatoes,” said Alexis Campbell, executive director of the Horn Farm. Shares may also include fruits such as strawberries, watermelon and cantaloupe. Campbell said the Horn Farm began offering the CSA to meet community requests. “There’s definitely an interest within the community for the CSA,” she stated. “The CSA model is a great way for the local community to support local farmers. This year in particular, there’s a lot of uncertainty on a global scale in the food industry, and the CSA gives people a lot of solace in knowing who their farmer is and where their food is coming from. It gives them a way to become better connected to their local food system.” The CSA program also helps the Horn Farm further its mission. “Our goal is to restore soil health, protect our waterways and increase ecological biodiversity while growing healthy food and teaching others to do the same,” Campbell noted. The farm is partnering with farmer Jeremy Kilgore to provide even more options for more people

Spicer, who teaches art at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School in Columbia, has helped the cemetery committee with numerous fundraisers over the years, although this will be her first time exhibiting her own work at the cottage. “I’ll be showcasing a variety of weavings and fabric pieces and possibly some prints,” she said. In addition to working with the cemetery committee, Spicer has organized other art events for local individuals and organizations, and she works with the Lancaster Office of Aging and Lancaster Creative Factory as an online art instructor for senior classes. She also completed two murals in Columbia - one at Coffee and Cream café and one at Locust Street Park. Spicer said supporting the Mount Bethel Cemetery is important because the site has historic significance in the community. According to the nonprofit’s website, the

En Plein Air Art Show To Be Held In Marietta BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For the past few weeks, artists have been painting at outdoor spots all throughout Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. They are part of the first River Towns Plein Air event, and their final products will be displayed at an art show and competition at Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., on Friday, April 23, through Sunday, April 25. The show will run on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.; on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

River Towns Plein Air is a project of Marietta Art Alive! (MAA), a group that promotes the enjoyment, creation and awareness of visual arts and has partnered with Rivertownes PA USA for this event. “Plein air is becoming a really big thing with artists across the country,” said Marita Hines, a member of MAA. “I’ve participated in plein air art competitions regionally, and many of the other artists participating in this event have also.” When the members of MAA came up with the idea for the event, they weren’t sure how it would be received by the art community.

And, the show is right along the river, so your view of the Susquehanna is going to be spectacular.” Vendors were charged a fee to rent their space for the event, and the money will benefit both Moose International and the Columbia Moose Lodge. Moose International runs two major programs - Mooseheart, a group home for children through age 18, and Moosehaven, a retirement community. Rightnour said Crafting for a Cause promises to be a fun day full of opportunities to check out unique vendors. “It’s happening the day before Mother’s Day, so there’s no more perfect time to pick up some last-minute gifts,” she remarked. Leading up to the event, updates will be posted on Facebook with spotlights on the participants. “People can search for ‘Crafting for a Cause’ on Facebook and do some window shopping with links to the participating vendors,” Rightnour explained. “It will give you a nice of idea of things you might want to buy when you get to the show.”

To help remedy the situation, Rightnour handpicked crafters to set up in the parking lot of the lodge. The event was so successful, she decided to do it again and to expand. “I had 32 crafters in the fall, but we’ll have room for more at the park,” she stated. “We have space for up to 75 crafters.” Participants will include Kim’s Prim co, Brianna Folds Books, Yo Yos Etc., Sparkle & Spill Fluid Art Creations, Bonerz Gourmet Dog Treats and more. Rose’s Deli will offer food, and Bricker’s Famous French Fries will be for sale, along with coffee and baked goods. DJ Bam Bam will provide music. “Most of our vendors are local,” Rightnour noted. “There’s going to be such a variety of crafters. You’ll see
