Keeping the town green
BY CATHY MOLITORISIf you appreciate the green spaces in Columbia, you have the Columbia Park Rangers to thank.
“We do all kinds of landscape-related work, including edging, weeding, pruning, raking, mulching, tree trimming, and planting,” said Jeffrey Groff, president of the group. “We’ve installed park benches and painted. We co-chair the annual Arbor Day event with the Columbia Shade Tree Commission.”
The Columbia Park Rangers formed more than 20 years ago after Bill Kloidt and Groff, both former members of the Columbia Jaycees, realized a community need. When members age out of the young-adult-focused Jaycees, they are expected to take their experience with the group out into the community, Groff explained. Kloidt approached
Groff with the idea of the rangers.
“Parks and public spaces were in need of attention, and he wanted to form an organization to address that,” Groff recalled.
“After several organizational meetings, the Columbia Park Rangers became official in March 2001.”
“We’re a lighthearted group that enjoys gathering to work.”
The group’s mission statement is to provide volunteers to assist with the maintenance and improvement of Columbia’s parks and public spaces, Groff shared.
The majority of the group’s work occurs in the spring when the volunteers perform cleanups.
“Sometimes, we’re asked to assist with something, but more often,
we’re proactive and make the initial contact especially with areas where we’ve been helping for many years now,” he explained.
“In February, we have our only meeting of the year, and it’s for the purpose of annual reports, planning and elections.”
Projects of the Columbia Park Rangers are often funded by the project site or the borough. The group supplies its own gloves and tools, which members purchase along with plants and mulch for some work sites. Funds are raised for the rangers through a flag project the group took over when the Columbia Jaycees folded. “We ask businesses and organizations for a small annual donation for us to put American flags in sidewalk sleeves downtown on holidays, elections, etc., through the year,” Groff said.
Over the past two decades, the Columbia Park Rangers have made an impact on the town,
Marking Memorial Day in Columbia
BY CATHY MOLITORISSince World War II, Columbia has hosted a Memorial Day parade. At one point, the small town featured the largest parade marking the holiday in the country, said parade organizers. While the scale of the parade may be reduced some, the spirit behind Memorial Day events in Columbia remains strong.
Columbia will kick off its Memorial Day events at noon on Monday, May 27, with a performance from the Bainbridge Band in the gazebo in Locust Street Park, 550 Locust St. At 1 p.m., a ceremony will begin.
The ceremony will feature community members and local dignitaries who will honor the holiday. “There will be a reading of the Gettysburg Address, remarks from Mayor Lutz, a main speaker … and a prayer by deacon Henry Reese,” said Bob Herman, one of the event organizers.

Manuel Acuna will be the speaker and the parade grand marshal. Born in Los Angeles, Acuna joined the Marines directly out of high school. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina before being called to service in Beirut, Lebanon. “I was there during the time of the bombing that took 243 Marines and Navy personnel,” he recalled. “Then I
Underground Railroad Museum in the works
BY CATHY MOLITORISIn the mid- to late 1800s, a “conspiracy of good” permeated the streets of Columbia as citizens helped freedom seekers navigate the Underground Railroad. William Wright, one of the town founders and a fervent abolitionist, is often credited with helping to establish the path to freedom for people escaping slavery. Now a group of people is working to bring history to life through the Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. The project launched in December, with a tentative opening date set for the end of 2026.
“Antebellum Columbia wasn’t a perfect place,” said Mark Stewart, a member of the Underground Railroad Center of Columbia (URCC), a nonprofit organization spearheading the project. “Far from it. But it was the place where people made a stand, often at extreme personal risk, and said, ‘This stops here.’ Those individuals See Railroad pg 2

was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, for a year. I served in the Marines from 1981 to 1986.”
After living as a civilian for more than a decade, Acuna felt called to return to service after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. He joined the Army and served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. “During Operation Iraqi Freedom, we encountered an IED (improvised explosive device), which took the life of a comrade and friend,” he shared. “I was tasked to escort his remains home to the U.S. to his family.” Upon returning from combat, Acuna was stationed at Fort Dix in New Jersey, where he trained servicemen and servicewomen in detainee operations.
After Fort Dix, he moved to Mount Joy, where he met his wife, Kimberly. His son, Christopher, and two grandchildren also live

he noted. “The Columbia Park Rangers make a visible difference in a town that’s coming alive,” he said. “In our early years, we addressed some areas and brought them back to life to the point that more interest in said spaces has brought about unforeseen improvements.”
The group is always looking for new volunteers who can attend any work session that isn’t denoted for members only. “No advance notice

locally. Acuna retired from the Army in 2015 and volunteers with a variety of organizations, including the Catholic War Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He is also the CEO of the veteran-focused nonprofit organization Blankets of Honor.
At 2:30 p.m., the Memorial Day parade will step off from 10th and Manor streets. With a theme of “United We Stand,” the parade will include multiple divisions and will feature participants from a variety of service organizations in Columbia. The parade route will end at Sixth and Locust streets.
Herman encourages everyone to come out for the ceremony and parade. “Come support our long tradition of having and honoring Memorial Day,” he said.
is needed, and you can help for an hour or three, whatever works for you,” he commented. “We’re a lighthearted group that enjoys gathering to work, so if you like working outside and socializing without the weight of endless meetings and membership requirements, you may fit right in.”

to an ideal and did the right thing during one of the bleakest times in our nation’s history. To me, that is a story worth telling.”
The museum will be located at 331 Locust St., in a building constructed in 1900 that originally housed a Woolworth’s on the first floor and a Masonic hall upstairs. The 8,000-square-foot attraction will feature informative and interactive exhibits that tell the story of the people who worked to help freedom seekers.
Although plans are just getting underway for the museum, Stewart has high hopes. He envisions the first floor full of exhibits telling the story of Underground Railroad activity throughout Pennsylvania. Upstairs, he hopes the museum will feature the stories of people who supported the effort and will showcase what it was like to live in Columbia in the 1800s.
Traditional museum exhibits will be interspersed with high-tech, interactive features that combine artificial intelligence and 3D holography

to bring Columbia characters to life.
Telling these stories will require some artistic liberties, Stewart said, noting that much of the history of the Underground Railroad was not written down. Stewart, who moved to Columbia in 2021 with his wife, Sarah, is particularly invested in the project. His background includes museum work, and he is living in the home built by William Wright in 1795. Thousands of freedom seekers came through his house and sat in his living room, ready to start their new lives.
He said he was familiar with Columbia and some of its history before moving to the area, but he’s learned more about how invested the town was in helping others.
“What I did not know is how involved the people of Columbia were,” he shared. “They were all-in on this.” He envisions the museum as a place to pay homage to the people who played major roles in an important part of American history, and he hopes the site will be an economic boom for Columbia.
“I think about the people who sat in my living room and probably had a moment where they thought, ‘I made it.’ We want to capture that emotional moment in this museum,” Stewart said.
“When people walk out of this museum, I want them to tell everybody they know, ‘You won’t believe what I just saw.’”
As work gets underway on the museum, the URCC has launched a social media initiative called “Today in Underground Railroad History.” To learn more, search for “The Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania” on Facebook or visit https:// columbiaurc.org.
Honoring veterans in Maytown

A flurry of activity will take place in and around Maytown square on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, when a ceremony to honor servicemen and servicewomen is held along with a street fair.
The events will begin with the 61st annual Antique, Art, Craft and Collectible Show, which will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will feature a variety of vendors selling antiques and homemade items. Food, including breakfast, will be available beginning at 8 a.m.
At 2 p.m., a program will be held in the square. State Rep. Tom Jones will dedicate engraved bricks honoring members of the community who are veterans or have made an impact on community organizations. Local Boy Scouts will be recognized for earning their Eagle Scout awards, and several state dignitaries will be in attendance, including Tracy Seiders, the state vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and Karla Zaar, the state chair of Americanism for the American Legion Auxiliary.
People will have an opportunity to win an American flag blanket, hand-crocheted by Nila Grose. All proceeds from the events of the day will benefit veterans, including a veteran named Carl, who is a permanent patient at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center and who is supported by the members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809.
Concert to raise funds for scholarships
Eastern York Dollars for Scholars will host a fundraiser concert featuring the Unforgettable Big Band on Saturday, May 18, in the Performing Arts Center at Eastern York High School, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will begin at 7 p.m.
Sara Gutshall of the American Legion Auxiliary has coordinated the Memorial Day events for many years.
“Veterans deserve our respect and honor,” she said. “I have brothers, cousins, uncles who were veterans. Patriotism is very important to me. Our veterans deserve the best from us because they gave their best for us.”
Over the years, Gutshall has taken an active role in restoring the Maytown square, which features monuments recognizing local service members of various wars. She was instrumental in overseeing the installation of iron archways over the four walkways into the square, and she recently worked with local blacksmith Stan Newcomer to add lanterns to each archway. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 will donate eight American flags to line the walkways of the square as well.
Tickets may be purchased in advance for a discounted price at http:// eydollarsforscholars .ludus.com. Tickets will be full price at the door.
Since 1999, Eastern York Dollars for Scholars has
raised funds to provide financial support to graduating seniors in the Eastern York School District who plan to pursue higher education. In the past 25 years, nearly $1 million has been awarded to graduates, and this year, more than $70,000 in scholarships will be awarded to members of the Class of 2024. The overall goals of Eastern York Dollars for Scholars are to raise scholarship funds, establish endowments, and provide assistance with college readiness and the financial aid process.

Eastern York Dollars for Scholars’ 2023 scholarship recipients

Gutshall, now 84, was born and raised in Maytown. “I wanted to bring the square back to what I remember it was like when I was a child,” she shared.
“It’s an important part of Maytown.”
The auxiliary is selling engraved bricks to honor military members and veterans. To place an order, call Gutshall at 717-426-2107.

First Capital FCU presents donation
During the first quarter of 2024, First Capital Federal Credit Union (FCU) and the FirstCap Gives Back Foundation jointly raised money and collected supplies for the York County SPCA.
In total, First Capital FCU and the FirstCap Gives Back Foundation, the charitable arm of First Capital FCU, donated $3,000 and pet supplies collected in branches during the quarter.
First Capital representatives who presented the donation included Lisa Barshinger, executive direc-
tor, FirstCap Gives Back Foundation; Sue DeStephano, president and CEO, First Capital FCU; Tara Houser Minetos, senior vice president of marketing, First Capital FCU; and David Morse, senior vice president of operations, First Capital FCU. York County SPCA representatives who received the donation included Chad Myers, director of philanthropy, and Steven Martinez, executive director. The money was raised through pretzel sales and a pet photo contest on social media, which garnered

support for both the foundation and the York County SPCA.
According to Barshinger, there were 31 entrants in the photo contest, both cats and dogs, vying for the titles of Top Dog and Top Cat. The winning dog, Indy, and the winning cat, Simba, both received a prize package from the foundation and will star in an upcoming First Capital FCU marketing promotion.
For the second quarter, First Capital FCU and the FirstCap Gives Back Foundation are supporting Habitat for Humanity.

JLL seeks grant applications

Lancaster County nonprofits are encouraged to apply for grants ranging from $400 to $2,000, with funding amounts tailored to meet the specific needs of each project. The grants are designed to support projects that align with the JLL’s ongoing initiative related to
nutrition accessibility.
To apply for a grant, organizations must submit nonprofit status documentation; the organization’s mission statement; a brief overview of the organization and evidence of its impact; a full proposal, including the organization’s plan and timeline for using the grant money; details on the food accessibility-based programming offered by the organization; and the number of projects planned for 2024.
Grant applications must be received by Wednesday, May 22. Recipients will be announced by Friday, May 31.
