Summer Lunch Program will fill body and soul
BY CATHY MOLITORISAccording to Alicia Ferrari, one in three children in Eastern York School District receives free or reducedprice lunch during the school year. But what happens when the school year ends? That’s where Ferrari steps in. She will serve as coordinator of the Summer Lunch Program at Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, offering free lunch to school-age children in Wrightsville Borough every weekday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program will run inside the fellowship hall at the church, 205 N. Second St., Wrightsville, from Monday, June 10, through Friday, Aug. 16.
“We are here to ensure that these children have access to a healthy lunch over the summer,” Ferrari explained. For many years, she said, Wrightsville Presbyterian Church was part of the
Columbia Presbyterian Church/ Hands Across the Street Summer Lunch Program. Last summer, she worked as site supervisor for the program.
“We are here to ensure that these children have access to a healthy lunch over the summer.”
“This year, as they open two new sites in Columbia, we are kicking off our own program,” she shared. “We have a rotating monthly menu.”
Food will be provided from a variety of local sources. Hot meals will be served on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each Monday in June, John Wright Restau rant staff will provide food.
“Wednesdays’ meals will be prepared by our partners at Hope United Methodist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church and Mount Pisgah Trinity United,” Ferrari remarked. “And on Fridays, we will have pizza from Marcello’s. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we will provide a ‘grab and go’ bagged lunch.”
The Summer Lunch Program is funded by donations both in kind and financial. “To date, we have raised $7,000 and hope to exceed our goal of $10,000 by the start of the program,” Ferrari said. “We secured $4,000 as a matching grant. All donations are tax deductible.” To contribute, visit www.wpcpa.org and click “give.”
Beyond lunch, the program offers opportunities for students to have fun and socialize. “We provide an air-conditioned hall for the children to enjoy their

“Many attendees leave the tour
with their own ‘Aha!’ moment when they realize that they could modify an idea used in a host garden as a way to enhance their own garden.”
Art in the Gardens will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout Columbia. The tour returns
BY CATHY MOLITORISWe all know what the American flag looks like, but have you ever considered how it used to be? The Columbia-Middletown Elks Lodge 1074 will feature various versions of the flag at a Flag Day ceremony on Sunday, June 9, at 1 p.m. in the gazebo in Locust Street Park, Columbia.
Attendees may view the pine tree flag adopted in 1775, the snake flag used by the Southern colonies from 1776 to 1777,
the Continental colors that represented the 13 colonies and others.
The Elks officers and trustees, led by Exalted Ruler Sue Luttman, will present the Elks Flag Day ceremony to celebrate the history of our country’s flag. Boy Scout Troop 35, Columbia Cub Scout Pack 35 and members of the Frontier Girls will hand out small flags and lapel pins to audience members prior to the ceremony’s start. Local Elks lodges throughout the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Panama Canal celebrate Flag Day on or around the official date of the holiday, June 14. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks requires a formal observance of Flag Day and has done so since 1908, before the day became a national holiday. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established Flag Day by a proclamation, but it did not become a national observance until 1949, when President Harry Truman, who was an Elks member, signed an act of Congress dedicating June 14 to the American flag.
“The Elks is a very patriotic organization,” said Luttman. “We hold the Flag Day ceremony to honor veterans and also to provide information and the history of all of the different flags we’ve had since the inception of our country.”
It’s important to the organization to not only recognize the flag, but also to keep future generations informed of the flag’s significance, she said.
“We like including the youth in our ceremony because it’s important for them to understand the history of our country,” she explained. “The history of our flag is the history of our country.”
Luttman encourages anyone with an interest in learning more about the flag or in honoring our country to come to the Flag Day ceremony.
“It’s a way to get the community together to remember where our country came from and to remember that we have the freedom we have because of the flag of our country,” she said.
Ferrari said becoming the Summer Lunch Program coordinator was a perfect fit for her, because she believes in building up her community. She’s the founder of Wrightsville for All, a local group focused on connecting the community by hosting free, family-friendly events, and she attends worship at Wrightsville Presbyte -
“I lead this project because I am a mom, a volunteer in the youth group at church and have a background in kitchen, restaurant and catering management,” she shared. “My values and vision for the community strongly align with the church’s.” There is no need for students to preregister for the program. To participate as a volunteer, people must obtain child care clearances and contact wfa17368@yahoo.com.
Community members are invited to make donations of items including drinks, single-serving snacks and nonperishables. For more information on the Summer Lunch Program, visit the aforementioned website.

Organizations to premiere play
The Hazel I. Jackson Foundation and the Millersville University Office of Diversity and Inclusion will hold their inaugural fundraiser, the premiere of the play “Midst of Faith” by Nathan Lee Gadsden. Performances will take place on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, at 8 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m.
“Midst of Faith” is based on the journey of Hazel Jackson, an educator who navigated her way from the one-room segregated schoolhouses of the South to her groundbreaking hiring as a teacher in a Northern school district and eventually as a professor at a predominantly white college. The play, drawn from the late Jackson’s autobiographical musings and accounts from her daughter and granddaughter, unfolds through her personal journey against the backdrop of black history. The story
concludes with a scene where students celebrate the dedication of a school in Lancaster in Jackson’s name, showcasing the lasting impact she made on the community.
The May 31 performance will be free for youths in kindergarten through grade 12; children and youths must be accompanied by an adult. The June 1 performance is open to the general public for a fee. Tickets may be purchased at https:// bit.ly/midstoffaithplay.

Riverboat cruise canceled
The Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) has canceled its Sunday, June 2, Susquehanna River cruise due to maintenance
issues with the Pride of Susquehanna riverboat.
Organizers plan to reschedule the event for July. More details are forthcoming.
under the coordination of Create Columbia, a nonprofit organization that promotes Columbia as a creative and vital community.
The tour will highlight eight gardens in both residential and commercial spaces that showcase different styles and gardening features. Four residential gardens from previous tours will return after the homeowners faced the same challenge: the removal of trees from their properties or neighboring properties.
Tour-goers who have visited the spaces previously can observe how the gardens were redesigned to accommodate an increase in sunlight.
Each of the residential stops will host at least one artist working en plein air. Acrylics, oils, collages and more will be produced during the garden tour.
“Attendees have an opportunity to interact with artists located in the gardens to discuss inspiration and methods or to just watch the creative process unfold,” Hohenadel said. String music will also be featured in the neighboring properties of two of the stops.
As Hohenadel explained, the garden tour was formerly coordinated by the local Chamber of Commerce. “After the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce decided to discontinue the event, members of the board of Create Columbia suggested picking it up as a fundraiser,” she said. “It takes a certain amount of creativity to tend to a garden, and
Create Columbia felt that it was a natural fit to adopt this event and expand it by showcasing local artists in action at each of the venues.”
Each of the gardens will offer a unique perspective, with features including ponds, perennials and pawpaw trees. One site contains more than 100 varieties of shrubs and perennials, while another showcases gnomes, fairies and other whimsical additions in a Mad Hatter Tea Partythemed garden.
Tickets for the tour will be available for purchase on the tour date at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Create Columbia will also have a stand set up at the market featuring plants for sale from the gardens of current or former tour hosts, as well as a selection of hand-painted decorative birdhouses designed by local artists.
Cash or checks will be accepted, with an additional service charge for purchase by credit card. The tour will be held rain or shine. For more information, including a sneak preview of each garden, visit Create Columbia’s Facebook page.

Spring road safety urged
Pennsylvania farmers are returning to their fields for spring planting, which means that drivers should be alert for large farm equipment on rural roadways.
As part of Rural Roads Safety Week, April 14 to 20, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and its partners in the state government encouraged motorists to be cautious on roadways. Each year, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Police to spread the message of staying safe on rural roads during the height of the spring planting season.
Farm equipment can legally be operated on roadways, including at night, but farmers are required to follow certain safety guidelines depending on the size of equipment moved. All farm equipment that travels at speeds less than 25 miles per hour is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem - an orange triangle with red outline - on the back of the equipment.
If drivers see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, they should slow down immediately. Drivers should be alert that farm equipment may be turning at an unexpected place, such as into a field, and may be making a wide left turn if it pulls to the right. Drivers should always be sure the oncoming lane is clear and visible before passing large equipment, and they should never pass in a no-passing zone or within
100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel. Drivers are also reminded to be patient, wear a seat belt, and not drive impaired or distracted.
PFB, along with representatives from PennDOT, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, as well as state Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., held a demonstration and event promoting Rural Roads Safety Week at Bill and Joyce Krug’s Farm in Loretto on April 15. County farm bureaus across Pennsylvania also hold local events in their communities to promote safe driving on rural roads.
For additional information about Rural Roads Safety Week and safety tips for drivers and farmers, visit www.pfb.com/RRS.
