Thunder on the River will roll into town
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you hear a rumble in the air at noon on Saturday, June 15, don’t worry about the weather. This thunder will be coming from more than 500 cars, trucks and motorcycles revving their engines in unison as part of a Columbia tradition.
“We started this tradition a few years ago, and it’s become a highlight of the show,” said Paul Resch, president of the Columbia Lions Club, which hosts the Thunder on the River event.
“A lot of people think that’s how the car show got its name since the sound of 500 engines at full throttle sounds a lot like a thunderstorm. The truth is, we came up with the name first, and then a few years ago someone had this idea. It was perfect.”
The 10th annual Thunder on the River will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Locust Street between Second and Sixth streets and in Locust Street Park.
Thunder on the River will bring thousands of visitors to Columbia to admire the vehicles; enjoy

food for purchase from local restaurants, churches, nonprofit organizations and vendors; and listen to oldies music while enjoying a fun-filled day.
An honor guard from Boy Scout Troop 35 will march down Locust Street and display the American flag at noon, after
which the national anthem will be played, and participants will rev their engines. The Kracker Beez will provide live music.
All makes and models of cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome. Show organizers will award 85 trophies, including Best of Show and the Barry Doutrich Memorial Trophy.
Doutrich owned an auto repair shop and founded the car show in 2005 under the name Cruisin’ Columbia. The Lions continued it in 2014 after Doutrich passed away. Other trophy categories include Best Preserved, Best Import, Best Truck, Best Cycle and Best Street Rod.
Whimsy will
on display in garden tour
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In a former parking lot next to George Shinkosky’s house in Marietta, a grand piano serves as a garden centerpiece.
The musician and avid fan of whimsy has removed the keys and planted pansies in their place. It’s just one of the many secret treasures you’ll discover on the Marietta Garden Tour.
The event will be held on Sunday,
June 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature eight gardens, each with unique perspectives.
“There are some very unusual creations by people on this tour,” said Karen Sullivan, garden tour chair. “You’ll be surprised by what you see. The difference among the eight is unusual also. It’s amazing what people think of and invent in their gardens.”

“The bulk of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we have folks from York, Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties, too.” The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and Lifecycles teams are split into boys’ and girls’ groups. “It is a totally walkable tour,” she said. “All eight stops are very close together. You’re going to see a lot of creativity and unique creations.”
He noted that as Lifecycles celebrates 10 years of serving youths, he continues to appreciate the impact the program has on its participants.

Waystock will return to Landisville
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will hold the 12th annual Waystock community music fest from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. The free event will include performances from various local artists and family-friendly activities, and it will benefit the Hempfield Area Food Pantry.
The celebration will take place on the lawn of Wayside’s property, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Picnic-style seating will be available under the church’s outdoor pavilion, and activities will occur inside in the event of rain.
Three local bands will perform, including Wayside’s praise band, Grace Notes. The Glossbrenner United Methodist Church Praise Band will kick off the show at 12:30 p.m., followed by bluegrass outfit Dolores Creek at 1:40 p.m.
Grace Notes will play an arrangement of songs at 2:50 p.m. to close out the concert.
A kids’ block party will begin at noon, featuring games and activities such as an inflatable obstacle course, a station for balloon crafts and a small silent auction for Lego sets and retail gift cards. Free food and drinks will be offered while supplies last, including Wawa soft pretzels, Hershey’s Ice Cream, snow cones and popcorn. The Pet Pantry of Lancaster County will operate a table with a prize wheel and share information on its services. Cylo, the Stormers’ mascot, will make an appearance at 1 p.m.
Stormers’ mascot Cylo and Wayside pastor Steve Fritz invite the public to attend the 12th annual Waystock music fest.
Wayside staff members Sonja Eckert, Rachel Holsey and Michelle Hess will be present to offer insight on the church’s upcoming youth programs and summer activities, including various pop-up events and a vacation Bible school that will take place from Friday, July 12, to Sunday, July 14.
Although there will be no admission
fee to Waystock, guests may bring nonperishable canned goods or a cash donation to support the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. Attendees who bring five or more nonperishable items will be eligible to participate in a prize drawing for a $50 gas card. The annual Waystock tradition was started by Chris Rowles, a founding member of Grace Notes. Rowles organized an evening concert in the yard of the church that featured several local praise bands, and church leadership decided to use the event as a way to benefit the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. The concert has continued to benefit the food pantry every year, and Wayside has raised thousands of dollars for the organization since hosting the first Waystock. “From the beginning, we chose a local mission to support. Wayside participates in global, national and regional mission, and we’ve also chosen to get involved with Hands Across the Street at Columbia Presbyterian Church,” said Steve Fritz, Wayside’s pastor. “Both organizations serve struggling individuals and families in our neighborhoods.” In
addition to raising donations for Hempfield Area Food Pantry, members of Wayside’s congregation frequently volunteer to bag food items, serve meals and provide music at monthly community dinners.

Sierra Club announces grant recipients
As part of its activities celebrating Earth Day, April 22, the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, announced the names of 11 more Lancaster County 501(c)(3) organizations that have been awarded its Green Project Grants. In submitted proposals, each of the organizations expressed a need for support of a venture intended to promote sustainability, expand environmental awareness, and improve green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, each up to $500, a total of 95 Lancaster County organizations have received Green Project Grants from the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group over the past nine years.
Those awarded 2024 grants, along with their projects, include Columbia Public Library, acquiring Nature Explorer Bags and the items that go in them, to be used by both children and adults while on outdoor educational excursions; Conservation Foundation of Lancaster County, purchasing hands-on materials for a three-day professional development workshop for public and private teachers on how to incorporate environmental studies into their classes; and Historic Poole
Forge, revitalizing several embankment areas to improve water drainage and stabilize steeper sections that had been covered with non-native honeysuckles and grass.
Also, Homefields Care Farm, Millersville, purchasing native Saskatoon berry plants that will be grown at its farm and at the Perfect Gift Community Garden in Columbia; Immerse International, Millersville, installing more native plants in its campus garden that encourages curiosity, exploration and appreciation of nature; and Lancaster County Therapeutic Riding Inc., a.k.a. Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center, purchasing Fly Predators, a pesticide-free alternative that uses non-stinging, non-invasive wasps to kill fly larvae and adult flies that can spread disease to horses and clients.
Also, Let’s Go 1-2-3, in partnership with Northeast Neighbors United and Lancaster Cemetery, supporting its fall community event at the Lancaster Cemetery in northeast Lancaster city that will bolster efforts to clean up, replant, and maintain the cemetery’s gardens and trees; Let’s Go 1-2-3, in partnership with the Southeast Community

The grant proposals, submitted to the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group over the past several months, were evaluated on criteria such as environmental objective, unique aspect of the project, quality of submission, and how the Lancaster Group might be involved. The grants were in the past financed primarily with funds generated by the group’s Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike and more recently were funded with money donated to the Group by its participation in the ExtraGive. Charitable, educational, or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet” are eligible to apply for a grant.
