“Embracing the Moment” was the theme of the speeches delivered by members of Columbia High School’s Class of 2024 during their graduation ceremony on May 30.

The speakers were Aiden Stover, Kaitlin Scheele and Brooke Droege.

For Aiden, the topic of the speech was particularly inspirational.

“My speech talked about how this is our moment. It’s your moment. It’s not your family’s or anyone else’s moment,” he said. “It’s yours, and you should take in what’s happening right now.”

He noted that he struggled in his early school days, and he highlighted those challenges. “I had a hard time speaking when I was younger, causing me to lash out,” he said. “My speech talked about how I learned to overcome my communication

There’s nothing wrong with failure, Alex Guillaume told his fellow Class of 2024 members at Eastern York High School’s graduation on May 31. “At some point in our lives, we will fail, and that’s OK,” said the salutatorian in his speech. “It’s perfectly normal to fail. What matters is how we respond to that failure. Failure gives us two options: give up or try again. We, the Class of 2024, have proven we are resilient. When we fail, we get back up.”

What’s the perfect setting for a car show featuring funeral vehicles? A cemetery, of course.

Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, will host the ninth annual Last Ride and Macabre Creations on Satur day, June 15. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The show will feature vehicles from the Mohnton Professional Car Club and the Post Mortem

The graduation ceremony featured student and guest speakers, music from the Eastern York chamber choir, the presentation of a class gift and the awarding of diplomas to 128 students. Kaydence Strange was named valedictorian. Despite earning the honor of having the highest GPA among her peers, Kaydence noted that academics is not what comes to mind when she thinks of herself. “If you asked me to describe myself, I would respond with one word: athletic,” she told her classmates. “My whole life has been dedicated to sports.” A soccer player since

“There will be some antique vehicles as well as some very unique vehicles used in funerals,”

explained Claire Storm, secretary of the Mount Bethel Cemetery Board of Directors and of Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery.

The idea for the spooky show came from a member of the Mount Bethel Cemetery board, Storm recalled. “Mount Bethel Cemetery Board chair Jane Moore

knew of a similar show at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia and thought it would be a great idea to do here in Columbia,” Storm shared.

Along with the vehicles, the event will feature vendors showcasing antiques and oddities at booths set up throughout the cemetery grounds, coordinated by Columbia Curiosities. “Additionally, in the cottage at the cemetery, Lucy Cadwallader will demonstrate how hair was used

York County will host Make Music Day (MMD) for the third year in a row on Friday, June 21, joining more than 125 countries worldwide for the largest single-day music event since its beginnings in 1982 in France. Make Music Day, coordinated in the United States by the Make Music Day Foundation, is an inclusive DIY festival encouraging musicians, producers, promoters and music lovers to collaborate and organize in-person and online music performances in their communities.

In York County, MMD will be a collaborative event between the Cultural Alliance of York County and a variety of partners, including the York Music Teachers Association, the York Revolution, Weary Arts Group, Shine Music Foundation and the Appell Center for Performing Arts. The day’s activities will be followed by the first-ever Make Music Night at the York Revolution home game at WellSpan Park. This year’s events are offered in partnership with M&T Bank and the National Endowment for the Arts.

By participating in MMD, the Cultural Alliance and York County encourage every form of music making and will culminate the day with

the second annual kazoo parade, led this year by the York Temple Guard. Registration is open now for organizations, musicians and venues that would like to participate in Make Music Day. Visit www.makemusicday.org/ yorkcounty and create an account to register as a venue or musician.

In 2024, all Make Music Day events will be organized through the MMD Matchmaking website, where musicians can match with venues to host them, and venues can seek out programming. For the first time, musicians and organizations may also apply for funding to help facilitate their program or event.

Find up-to-date infor mation on the aforemen tioned website or on social media @makemusicyork county on Instagram and by searching for “Make Music Day, York County” on Facebook. Email york county@makemusicday .org with any questions.

Nationwide Make Music Day is presented in the U.S. by The NAMM Foundation and coordi nated by the nonprofit Make Music Alliance. The official hashtag is #MakeMusicDay.

“These sports pushed me to be stronger and not use excuses,” she said. “Do not let excuses stop you from achieving your goals.” She also cautioned her peers against focusing too much on one thing, noting, “Seniors, do not forget to experience life while still achieving future academic goals. Learn who you want to be. … Chase your dreams.”

Along with participating on the soccer, track and cross-country teams, Kaydence was a member of National Honor Society, the Varsity Club and SADD club. She is the daughter of David and Amanda Strange of Wrightsville. After graduation, she plans to continue her education and become a physician assistant.

Alex, the son of Jason and Beth Guillaume of Yorkana, was captain of the varsity track and field team and played varsity soccer. He also participated in National Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, school musicals and King’s Knights, and he played in the orchestra. After graduation, he plans to attend Millersville University to study meteorology.

Class of 2024 president Aiden Evans also spoke at the graduation ceremony. She addressed her classmates about the journey

they all took from starting in elementary school to crossing the stage as graduates. “Though the journey of the past 13 years may have flown by in a blur, the moments of growth and camaraderie we shared along the way were nothing short of beautiful,” she said. At Eastern York, Aiden was captain of the varsity volleyball team, president of SADD club and a member of National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Christopher and Jacqueline Evans of Wrightsville. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Miami to study biology on a pre-med track, starting with a semester studying abroad in Barcelona.

Wrapping up her speech, Aiden noted that it’s natural to feel nervous about what comes next after high school. Still, she encouraged her peers to embrace change, adding, “Remember, the future isn’t something we enter. It’s something we create for ourselves.”

in the Victorian Era to make bracelets, brooches and earrings,” Storm said. These items allowed bereaved people to keep their loved ones with them always, she remarked, noting that jewelry crafted from human hair has existed at least since the Middle Ages, when English knights and other men might receive lockets containing wreaths or hearts woven from their lover’s hair.

Mount Bethel Cemetery dates to the 1720s and is the oldest burial ground in continual use in the Columbia area. Over the past centuries, more than 10,000 people have been laid to rest in the grounds. Many of the people buried at the cemetery played key roles in Columbia’s history. The cemetery is full of interesting statuary and striking grave markers, and event attendees are encouraged to walk

around and explore the grounds.

Storm noted that Thunder on the River, a car show sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club, is happening on the same date as the Mount Bethel event and will feature hundreds of cars just one block away from the cemetery. Admission to both Thunder on the River and the Last Ride and Macabre Creations is free. Vendors and anyone who would like to exhibit vehicles such as hearses, limousines or flower cars in the Mount Bethel Cemetery show should register by contacting Cathy from Columbia Curiosities at 717-330-4703.

The Arc plans resource fair event

Enjoying popsicles were participants in The Arc’s Sib Talk groups, a program for children ages 8 to 15 who have a sibling with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

The Arc Lancaster Lebanon will host a Disability Health and Wellness Resource Fair and Summer Party on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brickerville Volunteer Fire Company, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz.

A recent study by The Arc of Pennsylvania on health care needs of individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities showed that health care providers are often unsure how to effectively work with and communicate with someone with a disability. Individuals with disabilities can also face challenges when talking to

health care providers. The goal of the Disability Health and Wellness Resource Fair is to provide both parties the opportunity to interact and learn how to collaborate to improve care. Those who attend may meet various local providers who can serve their health and wellness needs.

Representatives from these providers will staff resource tables. The entities that will be present include ProCare @Home, Wellcare, Disability Empowerment Center, and Lighthouse Vocational Services. Those who attend may also participate in free health screenings, such as blood pressure checks by Bayada. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the event, and the Summer Party will include a child-friendly area with games, crafts, and face painting. Food trucks will be available in the parking lot throughout the event.

Admission is free and open to the public rain or shine. Vendor spaces are available.

For more information, contact The Arc at 717394-5251 or info@thearclancleb.org. This event is paid for in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Begun by a group of parents seeking services for their children with disabilities, The Arc Lancaster Lebanon has served Lancaster County for more than 60 years and Lebanon County since 2016. The mission of The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is to empower people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and autism and their families to lead full, satisfying, independent lives of their choice. Aiden, the son of Jessica Ortiz and Murf Stover, attended Lancaster County Career & Technology Center for photography. He hopes to pursue a career in cinematography. When the opportunity arose for any senior to write a speech to be considered for the graduation ceremony, Aiden said he hesitated at first. “Then, I started thinking back to my past, and I was like, ‘I don’t think I would have even pondered the possibility of ever doing this,’ so the fact that I am, that shows a lot of growth. That pushed me to want to do it even more.”

Kaitlin, who was active in the theater program at Columbia, focused her speech on taking what she learned on stage and applying it to real life.

“I wanted to try out for a speech because the theme really spoke to me,” she said. “You’re always living in the moment when you’re doing theater.”

She shared her tips for staying present, something that she acknowledged is hard for busy high school students.

“I try to take a breath and center myself and think, ‘Don’t worry about the future. That’s not happening yet. Don’t focus on the past, because that’s already happened and you can’t change it,’” she said. “The only thing you can control is the stuff right now, what

Kaitlin is the daughter of Brian and Dawn Scheele. In addition to theater, her high school activities included serving as president of the National Honor Society, as a member of Mini-THON and as part of the choir. She plans to attend Millersville University, where she will study theater.

Brooke had a dual part in the graduation ceremony, serving not only as a speaker, but also as co-valedictorian with her twin sister, Brie. The girls are the daughters of Marjorie and Alex Droege.

A standout basketball player at Columbia, Brooke wove some of her basketball experiences into her speech. “I focused on embracing the challenges and getting the most out of challenges, instead of just trying to push through them,” she said. “For me, ‘embracing the moment’ means just living in the present and not letting mistakes and challenges define you.” Along with basketball, Brooke played volleyball at Columbia, was a cheerleader and served with Mini-THON and as Class of 2024 secretary, among other activities. After graduation, she plans to attend East Stroudsburg University to play basketball and study education. About 80 students graduated in the Class of 2024. Madison Bootie, the daughter of Jason and Tasha Bootie, was named salutatorian. Columbia from pg 1

Ride for the Community exemplifies what Rotary

is all about

How are Rotary Club members and bicycles alike? They both may be underappreciated vehicles for goodness and kindness.

Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise’s upcoming Ride for the Community promotes the relationship that exists between the local cycling community and altruism. It also serves as an opportunity for individuals to explore what Rotary Clubs do.

“You don’t have to be a particularly avid, trained athlete to come out and do it,” said Steve Bell, one of Ride for the Community’s directors. “We’re trying to expand our impact on the community by encouraging participation. I think Rotary, in many ways, is the impetus to participate. We’re trying to introduce community service through bike riding. We think Rotary is an underutilized means to participate in the community and do good in the community.”

A recreational ride and not a race, the 20th edition of the annual Ride for the Community will take place on Saturday, June 15, at Manheim Township Community Park, located at the corner of Petersburg Road and Rotary Road, Lancaster. The ride will begin at 9 a.m., and participants can register the day of the event or prior to it by going to www.active .com/lititz-pa/cycling/ races/rotary-ride-for-the -community-2024.

“You’re enjoying it with other people with the support we provide,” said Bell. “It’s a supported group activity. Bicycling is cool. It’s individuals, but you’re enjoying our ride with a hundred other people.

Just like Rotary, we’re

individuals in the community, but we’re not doing it by ourselves. I think a lot of people should just try something different as a family.”

Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise’s Ride for the Community offers cyclists various course lengths - a 10-mile ride, a 21-mile ride and a 43-mile ride, as well as combinations of those distances. From Manheim Township Community Park, the courses take riders north and east through Lancaster County’s scenic landscape before returning to the park.

The fully marked courses include built-in water and rest stops. Snacks and lunch will also be provided.

“The way the courses are set up, you’re in scenic farmland, prime countryside,” said Bell. “You’re in very scenic areas where you can enjoy the nature of Lancaster County, and you’re not in a car. You experience it in a way that you can’t in a car.”

“In these modern times, more and more events are held inside,” continued Bell. “We’re outside increasing heart rates. There are definite health benefits to riding. It’s a healthy break from technology.”

Postcard club posts meeting

Bell is expecting more than 100 cyclists of varying experience levels for the Ride for the Community. All proceeds from the sponsored event will benefit Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise’s community and global projects.

“It’s one of the most enjoyable days of the year for our club,” said Bell of the ride. “Rotary really offers people an avenue to serve the community and to network. It’s really about professional development and community service.”

“We do attract cycling enthusiasts from across the region,” Bell noted. “I’d like to see more casual riders come out.”

at 7:15 a.m. at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz.

Affiliated with Rotary International, Lancaster Sunrise was chartered in 1997 and features 45 members. The club, whose motto is “Service Above Self,” meets every Thursday

The Lancaster County Postcard Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 17, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Club member Jim Ward will present “The Vasculum.” The postcard competition will be “Farming.”

The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 717-413-6882 or search for “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.

Grilling-related gifts for dads

Grilling is a good way to add flavor to various foods and enjoy fresh air and sunshine. Many people enjoy honing their grilling skills, including many of the individuals on Father’s Day shopping lists. For this reason, gifts centered on grilling may be suitable for this holiday.

To start with, every grillmaster needs a quality set of tools. Shoppers may consider purchasing a kit that includes a spatula, a fork, tongs, heat-resistant gloves, skewers, and additional grilling gear.

A digital food thermometer can allow dads to cook food to the correct internal temperature, which is vital for safety and flavor. Various food thermometers are on the market, but ones that can remain in the food and then send temperatures back to an app via Bluetooth can keep grillers apprised of the cooking progress minute by minute.

Shoppers may consider purchasing premium wood chunks, possibly assembling a gift package containing various types of wood, such as hickory, apple, and maple. Using these products, grill masters and smokers can enhance food with extra flavor.

Grill masters who want to make a custom blend of ground meats to use in burgers or sausages may appreciate receiving a meat grinder. Whether it’s a free-standing appliance or an attachment for a stand mixer, a meat grinder allows more control over the quality of the meat cuts used.

Dial gauges may also be tested for free by appointment at the Lancaster County Penn State Extension office, 1383 Arcadia Road, in room 140. To schedule an appointment, call 717-394-6851.
