Columbia seniors urged to “embrace the moment”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Embracing the Moment” was the theme of the speeches delivered by members of Columbia High School’s Class of 2024 during their graduation ceremony on May 30.
The speakers were Aiden Stover, Kaitlin Scheele and Brooke Droege.
For Aiden, the topic of the speech was particularly inspirational.
“My speech talked about how this is our moment. It’s your moment. It’s not your family’s or anyone else’s moment,” he said. “It’s yours, and you should take in what’s happening right now.”
He noted that he struggled in his early school days, and he highlighted those challenges. “I had a hard time speaking when I was younger, causing me to lash out,” he said. “My speech talked about how I learned to overcome my communication

There’s nothing wrong with failure, Alex Guillaume told his fellow Class of 2024 members at Eastern York High School’s graduation on May 31. “At some point in our lives, we will fail, and that’s OK,” said the salutatorian in his speech. “It’s perfectly normal to fail. What matters is how we respond to that failure. Failure gives us two options: give up or try again. We, the Class of 2024, have proven we are resilient. When we fail, we get back up.”
The graduation ceremony featured
student and guest speakers, music from the Eastern York chamber choir, the presentation of a class gift and the awarding of diplomas to 128 students. Kaydence Strange was named valedictorian. Despite earning the honor of having the highest GPA among her peers, Kaydence noted that academics is not what comes to mind when she thinks of herself. “If you asked me to describe myself, I would respond with one word: athletic,” she told her classmates. “My whole life has been dedicated to sports.” A soccer player since early elementary school, she is also

struggles to now I’m speaking in front of my whole class.”
Aiden, the son of Jessica Ortiz and Murf Stover, attended Lancaster County Career & Technology Center for photography. He hopes to pursue a career in cinematography.
When the opportunity arose for any senior to write a speech to be considered for the graduation ceremony, Aiden said he hesitated at first. “Then, I started thinking back to my past, and I was like, ‘I don’t think I would have even pondered the possibility of ever doing this,’ so the fact that I am, that shows a lot of growth. That pushed me to want to do it even more.”
Kaitlin, who was active in the theater program at Columbia, focused her speech on taking what she learned on stage and applying it to real life.
“I wanted to try out for a speech because the theme really spoke to me,” she said. “You’re always living in the moment when you’re doing theater.”
She shared her tips for staying present, something that she acknowledged is hard for busy high school students.
“I try to take a breath and center myself and think, ‘Don’t worry about the future. That’s not happening yet. Don’t focus on the past, because that’s already happened and you can’t change it,’” she said. “The only thing you can control is the stuff right now, what you’re doing right now.”
Kaitlin is the daughter of Brian and Dawn Scheele. In addition to theater, her high school activities included serving as president of the National Honor Society, as a member of Mini-THON and as part of the choir. She plans to attend Millersville University, where she will study theater.

After graduation, she plans to attend East Stroudsburg University to play basketball and study education. About 80 students graduated in the Class of 2024. Madison Bootie, the daughter of Jason and Tasha Bootie, was named salutatorian.

After graduation, he plans to attend Millersville University to study meteorology.
Class of 2024 president Aiden Evans also spoke at the graduation ceremony. She addressed her classmates about the journey they all took from starting in elementary school to crossing the stage as graduates. “Though the journey of the past 13 years may have flown by in a blur, the moments of growth and camaraderie we shared along the way were nothing short of beautiful,” she said. At Eastern York, Aiden was captain of the varsity volleyball team, president of SADD club and a member of National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Christopher and Jacqueline Evans of Wrightsville. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Miami to study biology on a premed track, starting with a semester studying abroad in Barcelona. Wrapping up her speech, Aiden noted that it’s natural to feel nervous about what comes next after high school. Still, she encouraged her peers to embrace change, adding, “Remember, the future isn’t something we enter. It’s something we create for ourselves.”

Professionals warn aspiring cliff divers not to jump to conclusions
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In the ever-changing world of social media and the online landscape, new trends often take the country - and even the whole world - by storm. Nearly every American will groan at the mention of formerly ubiquitous internet trends such as the “cinnamon challenge,” which encouraged thousands of people to try swallowing an entire spoonful of the potent spice without coughing. As always, the general public gradually loses interest in these trends to make room for whatever hot topic will take its place. Most online trends are relatively harmless, but some of them, including the budding fad of rock and cliff diving, pose a serious risk to people who engage in them without taking the necessary precautions.
Columbia, local medical professionals have made an effort to discourage attempts to practice cliff jumping in the area.
Recently, some school administrators sent an email to students and their parents to highlight a few specific concerns, asserting “there is nothing remotely safe about cliff jumping or diving into the Susquehanna River.” Due to the presence of a hydroelectric dam in Safe Harbor, the river has an unpredictable variation in depth that poses a threat to any diver, and many submerged objects are not visible from high above the surface.
Acorn Acres
used as a veterinary office building, and it will allow Acorn Acres to bring in more volunteers, more animals and members of the public who wish to take a look at the many ways it serves the community.
In recent weeks, various social media platforms have seen an increase of content depicting thrill seekers who enjoy plunging from the top of steep cliffs into rivers and other bodies of water. The precarious pastime has been safely practiced by trained professionals and extreme sportsmen for years, but the abrupt and widespread interest among teenagers and young adults has prompted many local school districts to issue a warning to Lancaster County residents interested in trying it out themselves. Due to the county’s proximity to the Susquehanna River, which is easily accessible to areas such as Pequea, Washington Boro, Holtwood and
Additionally, many people believe jumping into water is entirely safe because of the cushion the water provides. According to the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) website, most cliff diving related injuries are associated with the water entry, and divers’ entry position plays a key role in how severely an individual can be injured. During a study conducted in 2013, NLM determined foot and ankle injuries as the most common result of cliff diving, and more than 50% of injured divers entered the water feet first.
While you’re brainstorming fun activities to try out this summer, it may be wise to heed medical professionals’ warning and remember that the Susquehanna River isn’t known for its diving-friendly landscape - no matter how exciting the activity may seem online.
Shank said she initially spoke with Ryan and Ashley Tuma, the owners of the new facility, roughly one year ago about using the space for Acorn Acres. After discussing the potential expansion while Shank was teaching in North Carolina, Ashley suggested the two women meet in person on Feb. 28, unaware that it was the one-year anniversary of the passing of Acorn Acres’ late mascot, Poppy the groundhog. “I said, ‘I hear you, Poppy. I’ll go,’” added Shank. Once the details were squared away, Shank officially partnered with Ryan and Ashley to rent the new space and launch the Capacity Campaign.
“I’ve had to turn away animals from Acorn Acres every year because we literally run out of room,” Shank said. “This new facility will allow us to take a higher number of animals,
welcome additional volunteers and bring in additional species.” Currently, Acorn Acres specializes in rehabilitating squirrels, rabbits and woodchucks; the expansion will enable the organization to extend its care to bats and Pennsylvania’s only native marsupial, the Virginia opossum.
Once the new facility is officially up and running, Shank plans to offer tours to members of the public. Due to regulations, wildlife centers are not able to exhibit animals in rehabilitation to prevent them from growing accustomed to human contact. The examination rooms in the new building are equipped with one-sided windows, which will allow guests to see the animals while avoiding direct contact.
Acorn Acres’ primary goal is now to secure funding for the move into the facility and its continued operation. To make a donation online, visit https:// tinyurl.com/AcornAcres Expansion. For more information or to view other donations options, visit www.acornacreswr.com/ capacity_campaign.
