Input sought for Hellam, Hallam and Wrightsville survey

Residents of three municipalities in Eastern York School District have the opportunity to give their input for a comprehensive plan to shape the region’s future. The Hellam, Hallam and Wrightsville Community Engagement Survey invites people to share their thoughts on the major issues and opportunities impacting the community as well as what topics the plan should prioritize.

The survey launched June 24 and will remain open through Monday, July 22. It can be accessed at https://shorturl.at/ vERpg and features a wide variety of questions on subjects such as community satisfaction, including the benefits of living in each municipality and the challenges facing the municipalities, and comprehensive plan priorities such as available housing, recreation opportunities and business

development.

The survey is just one part of a Multi-Municipality Comprehensive Plan that began about two years ago, said Corina Mann, Hellam Township manager. All of the municipalities in the Eastern York School District initially met to discuss the plan, but ultimately, Hellam, Hallam and Wrightsville moved forward.

“We are all on this corridor along Route 462, and we decided to partner together for the Multi-Municipality Comprehensive Plan,” Mann said. “In the past few years, we have been doing so many multi-municipal things because teamwork is better than ‘I’ work.”

Over the next 16 months, data will be compiled from the survey to determine the next steps as a steering committee meets to give input on the planning process, working with staff from consultant Michael Baker

International. The municipalities are also working with the York County Planning Commission and the York County Economic Alliance. Goals of the project include focusing on real, relevant issues; listening to both official and citizen input; devising practical and workable recommendations; obtaining community commitment; and recruiting partners to implement the plan.

The survey is an important part of the comprehensive plan, Mann said, because community ownership of the project matters. The survey can be anonymous, or people can provide their personal information if they choose to, and the survey takes just minutes to complete.

Mann hopes anyone with an interest in Hellam, Hallam or Wrightsville will complete the survey.

“This is your community,” she said. “Have your voice be heard.”

Columbia native Lloyd Mifflin, who lived from 1846 to 1921, was a painter, photographer and prolific sonnet writer, but he’s not as well known in the area as you might expect, said Jerry King Musser, who became intrigued with Mifflin after moving to Columbia in 1994.

“As I asked around, I was surprised by how little most people actually knew about him,” Jerry recalled, noting that he wondered why Mifflin’s house wasn’t a museum. “I didn’t understand the lack of daily interest. However, it’s understandable that people living in a town are less interested in a ‘fellow towny from the past’ because they lack a larger context. I wasn’t from the town, so I brought that larger context with me.”

Determined to showcase everything Mifflin contributed to the world, Jerry formed the

Lloyd Mifflin Society. It’s an opportunity to spotlight the work of “America’s greatest sonneteer” as well as other local people of historical interest.

“This ‘society’ is one in which the subjects are the members,” Jerry said, explaining that the society consists of a website detailing people who have impacted Columbia and the surrounding

One of the five human senses, hearing is something that can be easily taken for granted. But for those who can’t hear, there’s an element of appreciation that inspires creativity, ingenuity and a manifestation of the human spirit.

Through a wealth of services and resources, the Lancaster Center of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, which is a subsidiary

of and overseen by Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (KDHHS) of Reading, helps individuals with hearing loss learn to listen, communicate better and generally lead fuller lives.

LCDHH client services manager and language specialist Karen Pfortsch, who has been deaf since birth, was interviewed for this article with the help of sign language interpreter Kandy Reyes, KDHHS’ president.

“Deaf individuals are happy being deaf,” said Pfortsch. “We can do everything except hear.

YCAS plans Starwatch event

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer a public Starwatch at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, July 13, from 8 to 10 p.m. The event will begin with a screened astronomical presentation on current astronomy topics. Guests will then be guided on a tour of the sky through one of the club’s telescopes. Attendees will be shown a host of celestial objects.

While the event is free and open to the public,

donations will help the society to continue to bring astronomical events to York County and surrounding areas.

If it is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. In the event of extreme weather, call 717-759-YCAS (9227) for notice of cancellation or visit www.astroyork.com or www.facebook.com/ AstroYork.

Those who own a telescope but are not sure how to use it may schedule a lesson at the observatory by emailing info@astroyork.com.

area. “Others who find the site are only visitors to an overview of (the members’) creative accomplishments. To assemble these creators into one place allows citizens of the town to feel something richer about their town’s past than initially perceived. For those who know little of substance of Columbia and hold a preconceived notion, they might think differently after meeting these creative members of ‘the society.’”

Along with Mifflin, other people showcased on the website include painter Caroline Peart, illustrator Jasper Green, musician John Reginald Kehoe and poet Dean Young. “As my site demonstrates, there were far more creative souls in Columbia’s past than should be expected for a town of 10,000 - less in Mifflin’s day, of course,” Jerry said.

Jerry’s interest in Mifflin began when he and his wife, Janette, moved to Columbia from Harrisburg. “We started hearing references to ‘some guy’ from the past who was a poet and a painter,” he recalled. “I learned much later, firsthand, that he was also entrenched in photography.”

The first image of Mifflin that Jerry saw cemented his interest in learning all he could about the artist. The photo depicted Mifflin dressed in a tuxedo against a hasty backdrop, his hand in an odd position. Jerry deduced that Mifflin’s unusual pose hid a cable release he was using to trigger a camera shutter and record

the image. “That invited me to get inside his head,” Jerry said, adding that he felt a connection because he, too, is a photographer. “I’ve been trying to stay inside his head since.”

Jerry and Janette are both artists, so exploring more about Mifflin was a natural fit, Jerry said, and the society has allowed him to pursue a passion for history as well.

“Some of the people I’ve outlined on the website are commonly known, albeit with limited knowledge,” Jerry stated. “Others I’ve profiled were suggested to me by friends at the historical society and even friends in my neighborhood.” As the sole researcher, editor and photo re-toucher for the Lloyd Mifflin Society, Jerry said he stays energetic about the project with the support of friends who offer ideas and some financial support for web hosting.

“I’m not pushing anything but history - no mugs or T-shirts,” he said. “It is a personal labor of love. I do it for my own edification. Most of all, I do it for those creators mentioned who left a legacy worth uncovering.”

Tips for staying cool and preventing illness

As the summer season officially beings, the Lancaster County Office of Aging has offered tips to beat the heat.

People are advised to wear loose-fitting clothing and stay somewhere with air conditioning. They should avoid hot foods and heavy meals. It is also important to stay hydrated, but people should avoid drinking alcohol or liquids with large amounts of sugar. When going outside, people should use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. A cool shower or bath can be rejuvenating when temperatures are high.

It is important to stay informed and learn how to prevent, recognize, and treat heat-related illnesses. Exposure to high temperatures, particularly when humidity is high and people perform strenuous physical activity, can cause three heat-related illnesses. Heat cramps is the mildest, followed by heat exhaustion, which happens when the body overheats. Without prompt treatment, this condition can lead to heatstroke, a life-threatening condition.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion may start suddenly or progress over time, especially with pro-

longed periods of exercise. The symptoms can include cool, moist skin with goosebumps when in the heat; heavy sweating; faintness; dizziness; fatigue; weak, rapid pulse; low blood pressure upon standing; muscle cramps; nausea; and headache. If a person believes he or she has heat exhaustion, the person should stop all activity and move to a cooler place to rest. The person should drink cool water or sports drinks, and if symptoms worsen or do not improve within one hour, he or she should consult a doctor.

Anyone who is with someone who has heat exhaustion should seek immediate medical help if the person becomes confused or distressed, loses consciousness, or is unable to drink. If the person’s core body temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, the person needs immediate cooling and urgent medical attention.

School posts open house, golf fundraiser

York Catholic Middle and High School (YC), 601 E. Springettsbury Ave., York, will hold a summer open house on Tuesday, July 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. by appointment. Attendees will learn what attending YC is like and what the school offers students in grades seven through 12 and their families. The open house will offer opportunities to take a personal tour of the newly renovated campus, talk with YC teachers and administrators, meet current students and hear their experiences, and learn about the more than 45 sports and more than 60 activities available. Space is limited, and preregistration is required. For more information, contact the school at 717-846-8871, ext. 1354.

Additionally, YC will hold its 33rd annual golf tournament on Monday, Sept. 23, at Regents’ Glen Country Club, 1000 Golf Club Drive, York. Registration for this four-person scramble tournament will start at 8:30 a.m. with play beginning at 9 a.m.

We can drive; we can work. American Sign Language is a beautiful language. What’s important to us is our eyes and being able to see.”

At LCDHH, individuals with hearing loss and their family members are directly and indirectly connected with services like sign language interpreters, sign language education, hearing aids, speech therapy, amplifiers, closed caption video phones, doorbell signalers, smoke and fire alarms, workshops, community activities and social events.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing also employ lip reading, facial expressions and body language as ways to receive communications, but they are more informal and learned skills that are often less accurate than sign language.

“The goal is barrier-free services and community access,” said Pfortsch. “Our goal is to empower our clients with whatever services are needed. It’s like a onestop shop. When a person comes in here, they need to discuss their needs with us. Some might be looking for a job, and we’ll connect them with employment agencies. Some people might be struggling with reading. Some people have limited language skills. Some might need to know how to get their pensions. We’ll get them connected to

from pg 1

the right people. There are a variety of things we’ll do to get them help, and sometimes we do advocacy.”

LCDHH serves about 300 clients on a regular basis. According to numbers from a recent census, approximately 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.

“We are only scratching the surface,” said Pfortsch. “Some people have a mindset about deaf people from what they’ve seen on TV. They label all deaf people as ignorant. We have to work to prove ourselves because it’s considered a disability. But deaf people don’t think they’re disabled.”

KDHHS employs a total of 10 individuals, two of whom work out of the LCDHH office. LCDHH is a nonprofit that receives funding from donations, grants and fees from its interpreter services.

“We are known in the deaf and hard of hearing community,” said Pfortsch. “Some organizations know us, and they connect their clients with us. They’ll work with us and collaborate with us. But some people don’t know the services are available. We’re here. People are welcome to call us.”

For additional information about the Lancaster Center of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services, go to www.kdhhs.net.

The fee includes the green fee, cart rental, refreshments on the course, lunch, and prizes. Proceeds will benefit the York Catholic Fund. Sponsorships are available.

For more information or to register by Sunday, Sept. 1, contact Laurie Moir at 717-846-8871, ext. 1322, or lmoir@york catholic.org.

Lititz Chocolate Walk slated

Tickets are currently on sale. Only 2,000 tickets are available for this event. Last year, 500 tickets were sold on the first day, and 800 were sold in the first week. The event typically draws visitors from 16 or more states each year, such as California, New Mexico, Alaska, and Florida. Tickets may be purchased by cash or check at Wilbur Chocolate, 45 N. Broad St., Lititz; Zum Anker Alley Shoppes, 22 E. Main St. (rear), Lititz; Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz; Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz; and Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run

Drive, Lancaster. Credit card purchases may be made at Zum Anker Alley Shoppes and at www.lititzchocolate walk.com.

New this year, some of the merchants and sponsors will offer coupons. These coupons will be emailed to online purchasers of the tickets prior to the event.

People who purchase their tickets in person should provide their email address so they receive the coupons. To redeem the coupons, a person must show his or her Chocolate Walk button.

This fundraising event is held each year by the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area to raise funds for the children’s charities it supports, including the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, the Manheim Township and Lititz libraries, and Power Packs. Last year, the club - which has fewer than 30 members - was able to provide more than $100,000 to these organizations, and in the 30 years the club has been in existence, more than $1.1 million has been donated. Chocolate Walk is made possible by sponsors like Wilbur Chocolate, the retail locations and restaurants that open their doors for the event, the town of Lititz, the more than 150 volunteers, the people who buy tickets, and the chefs and chocolatiers who provide treats without compensation.

The Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area is part of Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization that is devoted to serving the children of the world, one child and one community at a time.
