Cruisin’ for Cats brings cars, bikes and felines together
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Cats won’t be the only source of purring at the Columbia Animal Shelter on Saturday, July 27. Expect to hear the hum of engines as well when the shelter hosts its annual Cruisin’ for Cats Car & Bike Show. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., Columbia.
“This is a wonderful event for all ages,” said Tammy L. Jalbert, executive director of the shelter.
“There will be awesome cars, bikes, live entertainment by Tate Lehman & The Blue Chilis. We will have hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork and desserts for sale. And everybody has a chance to cast their vote and pick a winner in the car and bike category.”
New this year, in addition to
the top 20 vote getters, the top three cars and the top three bikes will each receive a cash prize.
This is the sixth year the shelter has held the car show. While cats and cars might seem like an unusual pairing, it makes sense considering the history of the Columbia Animal Shelter, Jalbert said. “Harold and Judy McKonly founded the Kleen-Rite Car Wash over 60 years ago. Judy had a

“When We Climb Trees” tells the story of a tight-knit group of friends who struggle with the
conflict between sharing reallife adventures and succumbing to the draw of gaming devices and screentime.
“This show is really about finding balance between time to play, pretend, be a kid and be with friends with the ever-present allure of screentime and gaming,” said Steven Courtney, who wrote the show. “I find it interesting to observe the youthful cast as they ‘pretend’

The cast of “When We Climb Trees” is primarily youths ages 10 to 16 from Lancaster and York counties.
This is the first youth musical Courtney, a singer-songwriter, has written, but he knows it won’t be his last.
“I am presently developing a new musical themed around my song ‘Steven the Pirate,’” he shared. “I’m having a blast exploring the options for the storyline. There are a few other ideas in the vault as well. I do think I’ll stay in the ‘youth musical’ lane for moving forward.”

Wild Abundance: Mid-Summer Foraging Walk will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon. Topics may include local plant ecology, wild edibles, and alternative uses for plants through wildcrafting and medicine, and ethical foraging and ways of giving back to the land. The program will include storytelling. Beginners and
tours for 14 passengers. People may learn stories of the river and enjoy scenic views. They may bring their own snacks and beverages.
All tours will be conducted aboard the Chief Uncas electric boat. The vessel was built in 1912 so that Adolphus Busch, co-founder of the American beer company bearing his name, could enjoy cruises at his summer estate on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, N.Y., the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. SNHA purchased the Chief Uncas in 2021 and transported the boat to Pennsylvania. Donors for the project included Ann Barshinger of Lancaster and Doug Hoke and George and Bambi Long of York. Survey
and business development.
The survey is just one part of a Multi-Municipality Comprehensive Plan that began about two years ago, said Corina Mann, Hellam Township manager. All of the municipalities in the Eastern York School District initially met to discuss the plan, but ultimately, Hellam, Hallam and Wrightsville moved forward.
“We are all on this corridor along Route 462, and we decided to partner together
for the Multi-Municipality Comprehensive Plan,” Mann said. “In the past few years, we have been doing so many multi-municipal things because teamwork is better than ‘I’ work.”
Over the next 16 months, data will be compiled from the survey to determine the next steps as a steering committee meets to give input on the planning process, working with staff from consultant Michael Baker International. The munic-
ipalities are also working with the York County Planning Commission and the York County Economic Alliance. Goals of the project include focusing on real, relevant issues; listening to both official and citizen input; devising practical and workable recommendations; obtaining community commitment; and recruiting partners to implement the plan.
The survey is an important part of the compre -
hensive plan, Mann said, because community ownership of the project matters. The survey can be anonymous, or people can provide their personal information if they choose to, and the survey takes just minutes to complete.
Mann hopes anyone with an interest in Hellam, Hallam or Wrightsville will complete the survey.
“This is your community,” she said. “Have your voice be heard.”

Textbook translated into Chinese has local connections
A 654-page medical textbook used in China, “A Comprehensive Guide to Geriatric Rehabilitation, 3rd Edition,” has significant roots in Lancaster County. More than a dozen medical providers connected to the county wrote 25% of the book’s chapters. Combined, these practitioners have provided care to hundreds of thousands of southcentral Pennsylvania residents.
Dr. Tim Kauffman, a native of Lancaster County, was the lead editor of this internationally acclaimed book. After graduating from McCaskey High School, Gettysburg College, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Medical College of Virginia and serving in the Army, he started his physical therapy office in Lancaster in 1981.
Dr. Michael Moran, professor emeritus from Misericordia University, Dallas, Pa., was a co-editor of the text. He lives in Lancaster.
Dr. Ron Scott, another co-editor, was the director of the physical therapy program at Lebanon Valley College.
Dr. John Barr, the fourth co-editor, is a professor emeritus from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. Both he and Scott sent students to Lancaster to train at Kauffman Physical Therapy.
Contributors from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health include
Dr. Christine Stabler, medical director of women’s health for Lancaster General Hospital, as well as Dr. M. Clive Perry, who works in radiology.
Dr. Beth Kauffman, who now treats patients at HARTZ Physical Therapy, and Ben Kauffman, physical therapy assistant, wrote about aquatic (water) therapy. They studied in China years ago. Beth is a board-certified geriatric clinical specialist, and she and Tim teach a “Better Bones, Better Balance” class at the Grandview and St. Matthew Lutheran churches. The classes are open to the public.
Dr. Michelle Bolton teaches at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (CTC) and provides physical therapy instruction online to patients and students.
Rich Mower, physical therapist assistant, was a professor at Central Penn College and now gives individual instruction in strength training, fitness, and health in Lancaster.
Mary Ann Wharton, who holds a Master of Science in physical therapy, retired from St. Francis University, Loretto, and now resides in Lancaster County. Additionally, she is involved in professional organizations in Pennsylvania and nationally.
Dr. Christi Stewart treated patients at Geriatric Associates, Lancaster General Hospital, but has relocated to Roanoke, Va., where she continues providing geriatric and palliative care.
Dr. Emily Germain-Lee, formerly at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and now at UConn Health, Farmington, Conn., spent time in her formative years in Lancaster with her parents.
Similarly, Dr. Kristin Von Nieda grew up locally, attending Ephrata High School and Millersville University. Von Nieda taught at Arcadia University, Glenside.
“A Comprehensive Guide to Geriatric Rehabilitation, 3rd Edition” represents the combined wisdom of 95 contributors from 12 countries. Dr. Hao Liu chose this book to
be translated to Chinese because he thought it is the best text about geriatric rehabilitation. Liu is the director of the physical therapy program at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. The release of the book was delayed because of the pandemic. The Chinese version was copyrighted in 2023, with copies released in America this year. The second edi -
tion was translated into Portuguese and is used around the world.

Cavod plans auditions for “Mary Poppins”
Cavod Performing Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, will hold auditions for “Mary Poppins” on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9 and 10, with dance call on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and callbacks on Aug. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m.
Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, “Mary Poppins” features young Jane and Michael Banks and their new nanny, Mary Poppins. Using a combination of magic and common sense, Poppins takes the children on memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael are not the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from this one-of-a-kind nanny.
The production will be directed by Jaime Hilton and performed from Friday to Sunday, Oct. 18 to 20, and Friday to Sunday, Oct. 25 to 27.
Rehearsals will begin Friday, Aug. 23, and generally run on Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m.
Cavod is seeking people who sing, act, and dance, as well as those who only dance.
People age 8 and up who would like to sing, act, and dance may sign up to audition at https://tinyurl .com/CAVOD-Poppins. An 8-by-10-inch headshot with an acting resume stapled to the back is required. Sheet music is also required; an accompanist will be provided.
Anyone who would like to submit a video audition may email a headshot, a resume, and a video of themselves performing a 1-minute monologue and singing a 16- to 32-bar segment, along with a live or pre-recorded instrumental accompaniment, to bergen@cavod.org.
Video audition materials must be received by Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Those age 14 and up who are only interested in a featured dancer role may skip a regular audition and attend the dance call only from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11.
