Our Lady of Grace Grotto welcomes prayer and reflection
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Across the parking lot from St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Columbia, there’s a tangible testament to patience and faith. Members of the church and community volunteers created a grotto, open to the public as a space for prayer and reflection.
The vision for the space began in 2021, when the church wanted to express thanks to the Blessed Mother for bringing it through the worst of the pandemic. Although the groundbreaking took place on Thanksgiving Day of 2021, it would take two more years before work began in earnest, and the project was just completed in mid-July.
Looking over the space, now called Our Lady of Grace Grotto, committee member Mike Sahd expressed amazement at the transformation of the area.
“ This is a place where anyone can come to pray and experience the Lord.”
“There was nothing here before,” he said. “It was all grass.” Sahd and other volunteers spent countless hours grading the site, installing a drain and completing other prep work for the grotto. Church member Tom
Bentley, a carpenter, donated his time and all of the wood for the grotto, used to build benches and an archway entrance.
Although the group’s members had a vision of what they wanted in terms of layout and design, they didn’t necessarily have the skills or experience to bring it to fruition.
“We were all desk workers,” Sahd said. “There was nobody in the parish who knew how to do some of the things.”
The committee relied on Jim Jones, a local landscaper, to provide guidance on how to install pavers and how to organize the space efficiently. Jones suggested a centerpiece of a cross, surrounded by a rosary created out of stones in the ground. The grotto

When it comes to art, a postcard can pack a powerful punch. That’s the idea behind the International Postcard Art Invitational. The exhibit will feature art postcards from around the world and will run from Saturday, Aug. 10, through Saturday, Aug. 31, at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia.
“This is the fourth year for the postcard exhibit,” said Janette Toth-Musser, a board member
of Create Columbia, the organization behind the exhibit. “Participants create their own postcards and mail them to us through the postal service. Due to the ephemeral nature of them, we hope they’ll mail them to us complete with the stamp and cancellation markings.”
Artists are encouraged to size their entries at 6 by 4.25 inches, but there is a little flexibility in size, she noted. “Artists can use any medium they’re comfortable with, even mixing mediums: watercolors,

Expect hijinks, mistaken identities, and all sorts of shenanigans when Susquehanna Stage presents “Anything Goes,” a comedy about a diverse group of people aboard a cruise ship. The musical will be performed at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates from Friday, July 26, through Sunday, Aug. 4.
“This show is a situational
comedy about a celebrity cruise line,” explained Gracious Mattson, who portrays debutante Hope Harcourt. “There are stowaways. There are criminals on board. There’s a debutante and a renowned evangelist. It’s a show that makes fun of everything - anything goes.”
Featuring the music of Cole Porter, “Anything Goes” includes classic songs such as “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “You’re the Top” and

Someone on the parish board had a connection to Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, and four students came with their instructor to install the bricks free of charge. A member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church completed work on a storage building that abuts the space, including installing a new rainspout and new vinyl, and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia painted a mural on the side of the building that faces the parking lot.
Sahd said he hopes the grotto receives a lot of use, and he’s already seen people praying in front of the altar or spending time in reflection on the benches.
“We don’t care what religion you are, where you come from. It’s open to the public,” he stated. “I don’t want this to just be for St. Peter’s.” The space is wheelchair accessible and easily entered from the parking lot next to the church off of Union Street in Columbia.
Sahd noted that Father Augustine Joseph was instrumental in overseeing the project, providing hands-on help throughout the construction.
“It turned out well, better than we imagined,” Joseph said. “When I came here in 2021, the parishioners wanted to give thanks for the protection they received during COVID19, and they wanted to build something in gratitude. This is a place where anyone can come to pray and experience the Lord.”
St. Peter Roman Catholic Church is located at 121 S. Second St., Columbia.
Turnpike Commission warns of scam
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) advises the public that a smishing scam is being attempted. The scam aims to deceive people so they will share their personal financial information to settle outstanding toll amounts.
The texts purport to be from Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services and center around urgent requests to settle unpaid tolls; the texts claim that the recipient will be charged an additional amount if an overdue balance is not paid. Similar scams have recently been reported by toll agencies across the country.
People who receive an unsolicited text, email, or similar message suggesting it is from the PTC or
another toll agency should not click on the link. E-ZPass account holders and Toll By Plate customers can use approved safe methods to check their accounts such as the official PTC E-ZPass website or the PA Toll Pay app available from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store.
Those who receive a fraudulent text may file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3 .gov. The site is dedicated to sharing information on internet crimes across law enforcement agencies.

paint, pencil, photographs, collage, crayons, whatever they wish,” Toth-Musser shared. “It’s a great opportunity to experiment, to push their limits.”
All postcards must feature original art created by the artist making the submission. “Your submission can be in the style of fine art or simply conceptual,” she said. “No matter the style or approach, participants should have fun with it.” Because the postcards will be exhibited at the Watch and Clock Museum, artists are encouraged to include a visual element that references the theme “Time Flies.”
Each artist is invited to submit two postcards, and artists are asked to include their name on each of their works as well as their city and country. “In past years, we’ve received entries from countries like France, Japan, England, Germany, Spain, Belarus, Canada, Poland, Russia, China and, of course, the USA,” TothMusser noted.
There is no entry fee for the show, and no awards are presented. It’s just a fun
way to display creativity from around the world, she said.
“The thing that’s special about this exhibit is that any visitor who finds that they love a few of the entries has a chance to own it,” she explained. “On the final day of the exhibit - Saturday, Aug. 31, beginning at 2 p.m. and ending promptly at 4 p.m. - visitors can submit a bid to own one or more cards.” All remaining entries may be sold during future fundraising events for Create Columbia, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the history and culture of Columbia. Entries are still being accepted for the show and must be received by Wednesday, Aug. 7. For submission details, visit the Create Columbia Facebook page.
The exhibit will run during museum hours, which are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.

Get hands-on with nature at Samuel Haldeman Day
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In the 1800s, Samuel Haldeman was a world-famous naturalist who studied and taught in Bainbridge. To mark his 212th birthday, the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society will host Samuel Haldeman Day. The party will be held at Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge, on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The celebration will include hands-on activities and displays highlighting Haldeman’s interests.
“We will have various clubs coming in,” said Tina Mark, recording secretary of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society. “We’ll have the Fossil and Mineral Club from Lancaster and the Lancaster Butterfly and Entomology Club.” Other groups on-site will include the Lancaster Conservancy and the Natural History Club.
Representatives from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will also participate. “Sam discovered a little fish called the logperch, so they’re bringing a video on that,” Mark said. “He also studied freshwater mollusks, so they are hopefully bringing some of those. Kids will be able to touch them and see what they feel like.”
A Native American area will be set up as well, featuring games, a teaching table and a storyteller. “There’s going
to be animal skins, scat, skulls and tracks, and the kids can try to figure out what they are,” Mark said. “Adults can try, too. This is for people of all ages.”
A talk will be given at 1:30 p.m. on fossils of Lancaster and York counties. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, with cake and ice cream to mark Haldeman’s birthday.
Tours of the Haldeman Mansion will be offered as well. Built in the early 1800s, the mansion overlooks the Susquehanna River. Haldeman lived from 1812 to 1880 and was an amateur scientist who became a respected scholar mostly through self-study. He contributed to the fields of zoology, linguistics, archaeology, geology, chemistry and natural history.
“If you enjoy nature and learning about it, this is the place to come,” Mark said. She noted that the preservation society used to hold Samuel Haldeman Day years ago, and when she was teaching a homeschool class on the property recently, the idea came up to host the day again.
“We thought it would be a good opportunity for more people to come here and see this place and enjoy it,” Mark stated. “It’s a beautiful place to spend a day. Bring lawn chairs or blankets, and spend as much time here as you’d like.”
There is no admission charge for Samuel Haldeman Day.
“Anything Goes”
the show-stopping number “Anything Goes.”
“That’s the Act 1 finale, and it’s a big dance number,” said Ethan Reimel, who plays the gangster Moonface Martin. “This show features a lot of different dance styles - tap, jazz, tango, samba, foxtrot.”
Each of the main characters in “Anything Goes” has a unique backstory, said Jared Mattson, who plays Billy Crocker.
“Billy Crocker is a broken-down broker living in Manhattan, N.Y., in the 1930s. He meets a beautiful woman, Hope Harcourt, and instantly falls in love with her,” Jared explained. “He spends the rest of the show just trying to get her to notice him. … He’s a little bit of a fool, but his heart’s in the right place.”
Gabrielle Dina plays evangelist Reno Sweeney. “Reno is in love with Billy, but he does not love her at all,” she shared. “She’s looking for love in all the wrong places, but she does find true love in this show.”
Ethan describes his character as “a gangster who’s really bad at being a gangster. He puts on this tough image, but he’s a bit of a softy deep down.”
Although the show takes place in the 1930s, it has not lost its appeal to modern audiences, Gabrielle said.
“This is a fun, lighthearted show, but it has a little bit of social commentary to it,” she said. “There’s a focus on celebrity mania, which I think is a very modern prob lem. A huge subplot in the show is the captain desper ately searching for celebri ties on his ship because they have none sailing with them, and that means people won’t buy tickets to the ship. He doesn’t care if these celebrities are good people or bad people. There’s defi nitely some commentary about how people will wor ship criminals just because
they’re celebrities.”
Because of its elaborate dance numbers and wide range of characters, “Anything Goes” is often performed on a big stage with a big cast, but space is a bit limited at Susquehanna Stage. The theater staff was up to the challenge, said Jared.
“The production team has done a really good job with this show,” he noted. “There are 25 people in this cast, and it’s been impressive to see how such a big show is coming together here.”
Gabrielle said audiences can expect toe-tapping musical numbers, lots of comedy and a happy ending.
“Come for a lot of fun, a lot of laughter, a lot of humor and comedic timing,” she said. “If you’re feeling sad, come see this show. It will lift your spirits.”
“Anything Goes” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, July 26 and 27, as well as at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 2 and 3. Additional performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, July 28 and Aug. 4. For more information, visit www.susquehanna stage.com.

Children aid Ronald McDonald House
Wrightsville Elementary School’s Bible Adventure released time program collected a record-breaking 309 pounds of soda tabs this past school year. Throughout the year, the 86 students registered for Bible Adventure collected the tabs, which will be taken to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey. The tabs will be recycled for money, which will allow families that have children being treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital to receive free lodging and meals at the Ronald McDonald House. The house is located near the hospital, making travel to the medical facility easier for families, and it also provides a playroom for siblings.
The nonprofit Bible

Adventure program is state-approved and operated by Joy El Generation. It allows third- through 12th-grade students in public schools to leave their classrooms for one hour each week to receive Bible instruction. The students also learn worship songs and Bible stories, and they memorize Scripture. The program is offered to kids at schools across Lancaster
Exhibit to feature items from the ocean
The North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, recently opened an exhibit titled “Shallow Seas.”
The exhibit showcases specimens of sea life, shells, and plants from the more than 250,000 objects in the North Museum’s collection. These items depict life that is present in the Caribbean Sea, the coastal Atlantic Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean, and how each has developed traits to survive and sometimes
thrive in its environment. The exhibit includes items that have not been displayed since the 1960s, and it is the first exhibit to be fully curated from North Museum’s collections.
Visitors may lend their creative touch to a collaborative artwork project by coloring pictures of underwater life and adding them to a depiction of a coral reef.
The exhibit is self-directed through signage and bold graphics, which are presented in both English and Spanish. “Shallow Seas” will remain a main exhibit of the North Museum through May 31, 2025.
Now in its 72nd year, the North Museum impacts thousands of local students and their families annually through its education initiatives in the museum, in the community, and at home. Programs include field trips, early childhood education programs, summer camps, STEM Sisters, the Science and Engineering Fair for middle and high school students, and many other programs designed to create access to free and reduced-cost STEM learning opportunities and to strengthen the foundation of youths in the Lancaster community and beyond.

Tabs may be donated at Lehman’s Feed Store, 6141 Lincoln Highway, Wrightsville.
Reading of new play set
The Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform will present a reading of “The Onboarding Testimonial,” a new play by award-winning playwright Bruce Walsh, on Saturday, July 27. The event will take place at 11 a.m. at the Franklin & Marshall College Philadelphia Alumni Writers House, 633 College Ave., Lancaster. It is co-sponsored by Creative Works of Lancaster.
The play, set in 2070, features a corporate human resources department that discovers that none of the current staff members is capable of creating personal statements without AI assistance. The department seeks to hire an elderly millennial to help.
Since Walsh received his Master of Fine Arts in playwriting from Indiana University Bloomington in 2017, his plays have been produced across the country, winning the Heideman Award, the Kennedy Center’s Gary Garrison National Ten Minute Play Award, and the Maxim Mazumdar New Play Competition. Previously, he was a longtime arts reporter for the Philadelphia Metro and City Paper. He currently teaches literature, creative writing, and theater at Messiah University and Elizabethtown College.
Walsh has been selected as a 2025 William Inge Center playwright in residence, giving him the opportunity to live in Inge’s boyhood home for five weeks.
The reading is free and open to the public, with donations accepted to help cover expenses. For more information, email lancasterdramatists@ gmail.com or visit www .lancasterdramatists.org.
The Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform was formed in 2005 and has presented many plays by various members, several of which have been developed into fully staged productions. The group meets biweekly to read and discuss new work, as well as to plan and rehearse public readings, giving playwrights a chance to hear their words performed by actors in front of an audience. More information is available at the aforementioned website or by emailing the previously mentioned address.

Fitness Court features all-in-one workout space
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Featuring seven exercises you can complete in seven minutes, a new Fitness Court has opened in East Donegal Township. The court, created by National Fitness Campaign, is one of just 500 such spaces in the country and the only one in Lancaster County.
“For years, we’ve been looking at trying to develop something like this,” said Scott Kingsboro, assistant township manager, adding that he originally considered installing a traditional fitness trail with various exercise stations along a path. When he discovered National Fitness Campaign and its all-in-one court, he was intrigued. He soon learned the company, which has a mission to change health outcomes in America, provided grant funding to help support the cost of the court.
The Fitness Court is located at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. It is open to anyone age 14 and up, and it features
equipment for bodyweight exercises including squats, push-ups, pull-ups and lunges.
Users scan a QR code, displayed on a wall of the court, to learn how to use the equipment.
“I truly think this piece of equipment is for anyone from age 14 to 99, because they can customize it or modify it to their comfort level,” Kingsboro said.
A push-up station, for example, features tips for beginners (“Apprentice”) to experts (“Savage”).
Residents are invited to attend an opening-day launch event on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 3 p.m. to try the Fitness Court and learn about upcoming community wellness events and programming.
East Donegal Township is working with GEARS in Elizabethtown, which will provide “ambassadors” to promote the court and demonstrate how to use the equipment.
Mike Brubaker, a township supervisor, said he’s excited to see the court put to use. He recommends
that people stop by the site and scan the QR code and then go home to review the exercises before tackling the equipment. “That’s just what I would do, but people can come here, scan the code and start their workout if they’d rather do that,” he explained. To get started, visit www.national fitnesscampaign.com.
He thinks the Fitness Court will be a nice addition to a park that already includes tennis and pickleball courts as well as walking and running paths.
“We think it’s important to provide healthy options of things for people to do,” Brubaker said. “Not everyone can afford a monthly subscription to a health club. This is free and outdoors. It just provides another thing for people in our community to do that’s healthy.”
While the grant covered some of the cost of the Fitness Court, the township is looking for businesses, organizations or individuals who would like to become sponsors of the court. For more information, contact
