Bringing the Susquehanna home
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For centuries, artists have found inspiration in the Susquehanna River. Now some of that art has found a permanent home at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, thanks to the creativity of a local artist and the generosity of a patron.
The original oil paintings, “Over It All,” “Harvest Moon, Susquehanna” and “Setting Moon,” all created by Rob Evans, were presented to Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) in June, becoming part of the Visions of the Susquehanna Art Collection. Although the works were painted in Pennsylvania,
their journey back to the area was a long one.
As Bill Wright, director of community giving for SNHA, explained, the paintings were

originally purchased by the late Jay Cook from the artist. Upon Cook’s death in 2023, the artwork passed to his estate. “When the
estate announced the paintings were available for sale, Rob Evans contacted Jim Snyder, a patron of the artist,” Wright shared.
“Mr. Snyder generously donated funds to purchase the pieces with the stipulation that they become permanent fixtures in the SNHA art collection for public display.” Snyder, an avid art collector from York County who now lives in Atlanta, presented the paintings in the perfect way to represent their subject. He arrived at the Zimmerman Center by kayak, traveling the final stages of the “444,” a term that refers to the 444 miles of the Susquehanna River from its headwaters in Cooperstown, N.Y., to the mouth

The vision for the space began in 2021, when the church wanted to express thanks to the Blessed Mother for bringing it through the worst of the pandemic.

When it comes to art, a postcard can pack a powerful punch. That’s the idea behind the International Postcard Art Invitational. The exhibit will feature art postcards from around the world and will run from Saturday, Aug. 10, through Saturday, Aug. 31, at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia.
“This is the fourth year for the postcard exhibit,” said Janette Toth-Musser, a board member
of Create Columbia, the organization behind the exhibit.
“Participants create their own postcards and mail them to us through the postal service. Due to the ephemeral nature of them, we hope they’ll mail them to us complete with the stamp and cancellation markings.” Artists are encouraged to size their entries at 6 by 4.25 inches, but there is a little flexibility in size, she noted. “Artists can use any medium they’re comfortable with, even mixing mediums: watercolors, paint,

First Friday show
Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) will offer a First Friday gallery show on Aug. 2 featuring works by The Agency, PCA&D’s student-run and student-led marketing and branding initiative. The items to be displayed were created on behalf of four York-area nonprofit organizations. The show will take place at PCA&D-York, 133 S. Duke St., York, with a VIP reception from 4 to 5 p.m. and a public show opening from 5 to 6 p.m.
The Agency worked through May and June on projects for York Fresh Food Farms, the YBA Workforce NOW Foundation, Tabby Trappers PA, and Friends and Neighbors of Pennsylvania. Mockups of the completed work for these nonprofits, and some for PCA&D itself, will be displayed, and a selection of mockups will be presented
in a slideshow. Process books will be on display as well, outlining some of the sketches, comps, and methods used to create the final works, giving visitors a peek into the process and effort involved in the designs.
The Agency’s summer cohort members included creative director Bailey Stechman, Class of 2025, graphic design; assistant creative director Logan Byer, Class of 2026, design thinking; and Agency members Warren Burke, Class of 2025, graphic design; Onix Guadalupe Rivera, Class of 2025, illustration; and Cole Zajdel, Class of 2025, illustration. Former PCA&D Career Development Fellows Alexia Eggleston and Jasmyn Stokes, both members of the Class of 2023, served as site supervisors, with PCA&D faculty member Ellie Cochran as instructor of record.

of the Chesapeake Bay at Havre de Grace, Md. Snyder presented the paintings to SNHA president and CEO Mark Platts as well as Evans. In addition to working as an artist, Evans is the curator of the Visions of the Susquehanna Art Collection housed at the Zimmerman Center.
Wright said he’s excited about acquiring the paintings and bringing them home. “The three paintings augment what is the largest collection of art dedicated to the Susquehanna River,” he stated. “These paintings … capture some of the
grandeur and serenity of the Susquehanna River. We are truly grateful for Rob’s work and for Jim Snyder’s vision and generosity.”
Located at 1706 Long Level Road in Wrightsville, the Zimmerman Center for Heritage is the headquarters of SNHA. It serves as the state’s official visitor contact for the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, America’s first waterbased National Historic Trail, which combines the routes of Englishman John Smith’s voyages on the Chesapeake Bay and its
tributaries in 1607 to 1609. The riverfront building dates to the mid-18th century and features a variety of heritage and outdoor activities, including history exhibits. It is also part of the National Park Passport program as well as the National Park Junior Ranger program. The three new paintings will be on display for the public during the Zimmerman Center’s hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. years before work began in earnest, and the project was just completed in mid-July.
Looking over the space, now called Our Lady of Grace Grotto, committee member Mike Sahd expressed amazement at the transformation of the area.
“There was nothing here before,” he said. “It was all grass.”
Sahd and other volunteers spent countless hours grading the site, installing a drain and completing other prep work for the grotto. Church member Tom Bentley, a carpenter, donated his time and all of the wood for the grotto, used to build benches and an archway entrance.
Although the group’s members had a vision of what they wanted in terms of layout and design, they didn’t necessarily have the skills or experience to bring it to fruition.
“We were all desk workers,” Sahd said. “There was nobody in the parish who knew how to do some of the things.”
The committee relied on Jim Jones, a local landscaper, to provide guidance on how to install pavers and how to organize the space efficiently. Jones suggested a centerpiece of a cross, surrounded by a rosary created out of stones in the ground. The grotto also includes a Blessed Mother altar, trees, solar-powered lights and a wall of engraved bricks, which the committee sold to fund the project.
Someone on the parish board had a connection to Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, and four students came with their instructor to install the bricks free of charge. A member of St.
PPL Foundation to offer scholarships
To support future leaders in the clean energy transition, PPL Foundation has partnered with a network of schools to provide scholarships to students who are passionate about clean energy, sustainability, decarbonization and grid reliability.
Leo the Great Catholic Church completed work on a storage building that abuts the space, including installing a new rainspout and new vinyl, and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia painted a mural on the side of the building that faces the parking lot.
Sahd said he hopes the grotto receives a lot of use, and he’s already seen people praying in front of the altar or spending time in reflection on the benches.
“We don’t care what religion you are, where you come from. It’s open to the public,” he stated. “I don’t want this to just be for St. Peter’s.” The space is wheelchair accessible and easily entered from the parking lot next to the church off of Union Street in Columbia.
Sahd noted that Father Augustine Joseph was instrumental in overseeing the project, providing hands-on help throughout the construction.
“It turned out well, better than we imagined,” Joseph said. “When I came here in 2021, the parishioners wanted to give thanks for the protection they received during COVID-19, and they wanted to build something in gratitude. This is a place where anyone can come to pray and experience the Lord.”
St. Peter Roman Catholic Church is located at 121 S. Second St., Columbia.

Comfort and inspiration
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“Today is the day we officially take off our hard hats,” said Herman Bontrager to applause. Bontrager, board chair of the Clinic for Special Children and chair of the Keeping the Promise Building Hope capital campaign, was addressing the gathering at the June 20 ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house held at the new Clinic for Special Children, recently completed at 20 Community Lane, Gordonville.
Bontrager welcomed the
group and immediately recalled April 4, 2023, when the organization broke ground for the new building. He also reminded the gathering of the vision and courage of Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, who founded the clinic 35 years ago. “We have served the most vulnerable among us - children and adults facing rare genetic disorders,” said Bontrager, adding, “Today children with once life-limiting disorders are growing into healthy adults and new treatments are on the horizon. This building represents the clinic’s promise to care for children as they age and seek life-giving therapies.”
The Rodriguez family from New York spoke next, with Alicia, mother of Eric and wife of Walter, telling the story of how the family was overwhelmed by Eric’s diagnosis of glutaric acidemia, when he was born at 31 weeks of gestation.
5K run/walk to benefit GiGi’s Playhouse
HARTZ Physical Therapy will host the 21st annual Fall Blast 5K Run/ Walk on Saturday, Oct. 5. All proceeds from the event, which is being held during Physical Therapy and Down Syndrome Acceptance months, will benefit GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster.
N. Oak St., Lititz. There will be cash prizes and age bracket awards.
The race is organized through the HARTZ Charitable Organization. The annual event has raised more than $350,000 for charities throughout Lancaster County.
Walter searched the internet for answers, and when he discovered the clinic in Lancaster County, the family drove the four hours to meet staff members. “We thought the GPS had made a mistake,” noted Alicia of the final portion of the trip when the car traveled through a farm field and a cluster of trees. “From the moment we walked in, we felt hope,” she stated, noting that Eric, who is now 5, is in good health and “runs us ragged.” “He is our daily reminder that God is gracious and good,” she said. “The clinic manifests hope when there isn’t any.”
Clinic executive director Adam Heaps spoke prior
to the ribbon cutting. “The vision for this project was conceived a number of years ago when the need for the clinic’s innovative and essential services was increasing while the walls of clinic were not,” he said.
Heaps defined the work of the organization in a number of ways, noting that the office serves children and adults with genetic disorders primarily from the Plain community.
“We walk alongside families that have to make important decisions relating to some of the most daunting medical challenges,” he said. Heaps noted that staff members endeavor to create a comforting and inspiring environment for every family that walks through the clinic’s doors, and he quoted a donor who recently prayed for the clinic, saying, “The clinic is a place where love and know-how come together.”
“To me, at the end of the day, the clinic combines love and knowledge to create good,” Heaps added. More information about the clinic
The family-friendly event will feature a 3.1-mile run/walk and a children’s run, where youngsters will be doused with color. There will also be T-shirts and children’s goodie bags provided. The race will begin at 9 a.m. at John R. Bonfield Elementary School, 101

pencil, photographs, collage, crayons, whatever they wish,” Toth-Musser shared. “It’s a great opportunity to experiment, to push their limits.”
All postcards must feature original art created by the artist making the submission. “Your submission can be in the style of fine art or simply conceptual,” she said.
“No matter the style or approach, participants should have fun with it.” Because the postcards will be exhibited at the Watch and Clock Museum, artists are encouraged to include a visual element that references the theme “Time Flies.”
Each artist is invited to submit two postcards, and artists are asked to include their name on each of their works as well as their city and country. “In past years, we’ve received entries from countries like France, Japan, England, Germany, Spain, Belarus, Canada, Poland, Russia, China and, of course, the USA,” Toth-Musser noted.
There is no entry fee for the show, and no
awards are presented. It’s just a fun way to display creativity from around the world, she said.
“The thing that’s special about this exhibit is that any visitor who finds that they love a few of the entries has a chance to own it,” she explained.
“On the final day of the exhibit - Saturday, Aug. 31, beginning at 2 p.m. and ending promptly at 4 p.m. - visitors can submit a bid to own one or more cards.” All remaining entries may be sold during future fundraising events for Create Columbia, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the history and culture of Columbia.
Entries are still being accepted for the show and must be received by Wednesday, Aug. 7. For submission details, visit the Create Columbia Facebook page.
The exhibit will run during museum hours, which are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays. For more information on Create Columbia, visit www.createcolumbia.org.
