Soiree On The Susquehanna BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“A lot of people think the Susquehanna River divides Lancaster and York counties, but I like to think of it as a zipper,” said Bill Wright, director of community giving for Susquehanna National Heritage Area (NHA). “It’s a connector. It brings us together.” The river will take center stage when Susquehanna NHA holds its Summer Soiree Redux beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. The event will take place at River’s Edge at Long Level, 1829 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Organizers are calling it a “Redux” because last year’s event had to be canceled, Wright explained, noting the Summer See Soiree pg 4

Fête Will Keep Cemetery In The Black BY CATHY MOLITORIS
he Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia is the final resting place of many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. You can help preserve that history by attending Fête en Noir, a fundraiser organized by the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery. The event will be held on Friday,
T
Aug. 13, in the cemetery, located at 700 Locust St. Entrance to the grounds will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a bringyour-own-picnic from 6 to 9 p.m. The event was inspired by similar local fundraisers, said Kathy Hohenadel, a member of the Friends group. “We saw the Fête en Blanc, which is held in Lancaster, and we thought, ‘What a cool idea,’”
she recalled. “Since we’re doing this in a cemetery, we decided to do Fête en Noir and encourage people to wear black.” Looking at the calendar this year, the Friends saw that a Friday the 13th will occur in August, and they thought it made the perfect date for the event. Participants should bring their own picnic food to the Fête en Noir and
should also make reservations as a group, Hohenadel noted, adding, “We’ll reserve tables and seat people by their group, whether it’s a group of four or a group of eight, or whatever size.” Music will be provided by a DJ, and participants will have the opportunity to hit the dance floor or stroll the grounds and take in the cemetery’s beauty.

Debbie Saylor, curator for the Blue Rock Heritage Center, believes that she and Blue Rock president Charlie Douts bring together the expertise needed to preserve Washington Boro area history. “My specialty is Native American (cultures), but Charlie knows local history, so it’s a good partnership,” she said. The Heritage Center, located at 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, is open for special occasions, including Sundays, Aug. 22, Sept. 19, and Oct. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. More information about upcoming activities may be found at www.bluerockheritage.org. According to Douts, the organization was founded after the location was purchased by the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority in 2002. “A group felt we had lost so much history,” said Douts, who added that the borough was the smallest in Lancaster County prior to becoming part of Manor Township in 1971. The group recognized the unique Native American history of the area and brought in Saylor from Baltimore to bring new life to the historical displays at the center. Saylor, who is curator of the Indian Steps Museum in Airville and vice president of the Lower Susquehanna Archaeology Society Chapter 28, said she saw a real potential gem in the Blue Rock Her-
itage Center. “Washington Boro is very rich in archaeological history,” she noted. The current exhibit at Blue Rock Heritage Center, “Footprints Through Time,” takes visitors from the Paleo-Indian Period to the present. “ When you walk in, you understand the timeline, which is Paleo-Indian the first 16,000 years,” she said, explaining that the earliest culture in the area is traced to Charlie Douts (left) and Deb Saylor are working together nomadic people, followed by to preserve the history of Washington Boro at Blue Rock Shenk’s Ferry people. Among Heritage Center. the artifacts on display are stone tools, spear tips, and pottery. Soiree is an opportunity to raise funds for the organization while also highlighting the history and culture of the region. The event will feature pontoon boat rides on the Susquehanna, live jazz from the Tom Pontz Trio, food and beverages and a silent auction. “We’ll have more than 40 items,” Wright noted. “We’ll have things like river experiences, boat rentals, paddleboard lessons, artwork and more.” The soiree will kick off the 20th anniversary celebration of the organization being recognized as a state heritage area, Wright said, adding that a variety of activities are planned all weekend for the anniversary. In 2019, Susquehanna Heritage was designated as a national heritage area and has made the Susquehanna River the centerpiece of its programming. The organization operates the Zimmerman Center for Heritage in Wrightsville and manages the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center in Columbia. Offering programming on both sides of the river works well with Susquehanna NHA’s mission of promoting outdoor fun and cultural discov-
ery. “Lancaster and York counties share a lot of things in terms of culture, heritage, geology and history,” Wright said. “ We’re working on developing partnerships with other groups in the area that align with our mission.” Along with providing field trip opportunities, lecture series, outdoor programming and more, Susquehanna NHA is an economic driver for the region, he stated, as it brings in tourists for events and activities. The Summer Soiree will help Susquehanna NHA continue its educational programming and fund upcoming events and major projects. “Coming to the soiree is a way to support an organization that is working to preserve and conserve our heritage as well as promote the region as an economic engine,” Wright remarked. “It will be a fun evening to come out, enjoy some food and live music and take a boat ride at a gorgeous place. And you’ll be helping us continue to support and promote the culture and heritage of this area.” For more information on the Summer Soiree, visit www .susquehannaheritage.org or email Wright at wwright@ susquehannaheritage.org.

This year’s wildcard was awarded to pro tennis player Alexa Glatch from Newport Beach, Calif. Glatch has been playing tennis since she was 5 years old and went professional at the age of 15. “It’s been a long journey, lots of ups and downs,” said Glatch. “I feel so fortunate to get to do what I love, and I can’t thank Wilson enough for the opportunity to play in the tournament as the wildcard.” Glatch noted that there will be many great players and a strong field - emphasizing
that it may be the strongest field that the tournament has ever had. Those interested in volunteering or sponsoring the event may contact Pipkin at wpipkin@hempfieldrec.com or 717-471-8286. For more information about the tournament, visit https://bit.ly/kosertennis.

Some of the world’s top female tennis players will participate in the only professional tennis tournament in Pennsylvania this summer. After its cancellation last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge, a U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit event, will return to the Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 9, and end on Sunday, Aug. 15. Many of the world’s current and potential future stars will
compete in the event. The players will compete in singles and doubles for a purse of $100,000 - the largest in the tournament’s 14-year history. Dozens of alumni from the event have gone on to achieve successful professional careers, including Elise Mertens, Jessica Pegula, Madison Brengle, and Jennifer Brady. Brady is representing the U.S. at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. “Most of the funds are raised locally, and we couldn’t do that without our main sponsors,” stated tournament director Wilson Pipkin. “It’s exciting to know that our

DreamWrights Center for Community Arts has welcomed Gregory DeCandia to York as its new artistic director. DeCandia, who has held many roles in theaters, including actor, director and writer, came to York from Philadelphia and Oklahoma, most recently. DeCandia has hit the ground running at DreamWrights, arriving at the opening of its first indoor show since COVID-19, “West Side Story, School Edition,” as well as the start of summer camps. He is also creating the organization’s new Community Connectors program as an effort to draw other community partners into the fold.
In only a few weeks, DeCandia has started meeting people across the city to understand what DreamWrights means to them and to get to know his new home. Aside from helping guest directors run shows and all other artistic director tasks, DeCandia will direct this year’s holiday show, “A Christmas Carol,” as well as performing his own piece, “Silhouettes of Service,” on Veterans Day. This show is a 75-minute solo verbatim theater piece derived from 26 interviews of soldiers from World War II to the present. DeCandia is also planning a similar piece for the 2022 season called “If You Knew York,” where he will
engage residents to hear about their town. For more information about DreamWrights, visit www.dreamwrights.org or www.facebook.com/dream wrights.

Rehabilitating Wildlife At Raven Ridge In 2010, there was an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig located in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in what is believed to be the largest marine oil spill in history. After hearing about the oil spill, something sparked in Washington Boro resident Tracie Young. “I saw all those animals covered in oil, and I was so upset,” recalled Tracie. “I cried every day.” Tracie applied to help save the animals, but Deepwater Horizon denied her application because she was not a wildlife

rehabilitator. Shortly after, one night when Tracie and her husband, Kurt, were driving home from dinner, Tracie witnessed a vehicle hit a goose and drive away. Immediately, Tracie pulled off to the side of the road to rescue the goose. It took her three days to find a rehabilitation center for the goose, and it was located an hour and a half away. After arriving at Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill County, Tracie saw brochures for wildlife rehabilitation classes. Soon enough, Tracie realized her dream was to help animals. After receiving permits from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Tracie opened Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRWC) in 2015. Although located in Washington Boro, RRWC treats animals from roughly 17 counties in Pennsylvania. Every year, RRWC rehabilitates nearly 2,000 animals and is the home to several nonreleasable animals. “A lot of people don’t realize the dedication,” said Tracie. “It’s not a job. It’s a lifestyle. It’s seven days a week, 365 days a year. No vacations, no days off.” Some of the non-releasable animals serve as educational ambassadors in RRWC programs. RRWC offers off-site
programs for birthday parties, schools, camps, clubs, and more. The programs are suitable for people of all ages and can be tailored to fit the groups’ needs. Tracie noted that wildlife rehabilitation centers are very important. Most people do not have the knowledge to take care of injured wildlife, which is why Tracie encourages members of the public to call RRWC if they come across wildlife in need of assistance. “Do not feed the animals,” stated Tracie. “Put the animal in a dark place to relax and give us a call.” For more information about RRWC, visit https://raven ridgewildlifecenter.org or search for “Raven Ridge Wildlife Center” on Facebook. To donate to the center, visit https://ravenridgewildlife center.org/wish-list.html.

License Sales Start
The 2021-22 general hunting licenses are on sale throughout Pennsylvania. The transaction fees have increased for all hunting licenses, as have the costs of an antlerless deer license for Pennsylvania residents and for nonresidents. The York County Treasurer’s Office began accepting resident antlerless deer applications by mail only on July 12. Any checks received for the wrong amount will be returned and will go unprocessed, jeopardizing the hunter’s choice of WMU. Applicants should write a separate check for each license when sending multiple license applications in a single envelope. Another new rule is that hunters may now apply for and obtain up to six antlerless deer licenses before the start of hunting seasons for any wildlife management unit (WMU) in which licenses remain available. Hunters statewide are limited to holding six unfilled antlerless deer licenses at a
time, but hunters may obtain no more than three antlerless deer licenses during the initial mail-in rounds. Each hunter will qualify for at least three additional licenses at the time over-the-counter sales begin, although licenses in many WMUs are expected to be sold out by Monday, Sept. 13. Hunters who obtain six antlerless deer licenses may apply for additional licenses, if available, as they harvest deer and report them. Hunters who report harvests online through www.huntfish.pa.gov or call the customer support line at 800-838-4431 instantly become eligible to purchase another license, if any are available. Those reporting by mail will not be eligible to buy another license until their report is logged. The last day to purchase a landowner antlerless deer license was July 9. For more information, call the York County Treasurer’s Office at 717-771-9603.
Rotary Club Plans Golf Event The Rotary Club of Eastern York County will hold its 32nd annual golf tournament in memory of Kenneth Stoner on Friday, Aug. 6, at Cool Creek Golf Club, 300 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Stoner was a 64-year member of the Rotary Club of Eastern York County.
Call Cool Creek Golf Club at 717-252-3691 for tee times, which will start around 7 a.m. Limited spots are available. All proceeds will go toward community organizations, Eastern York School District schools and Rotary projects around the world.
