Wild & Uncommon Weekend will feature Pawpaw Festival

It all started with a pawpaw.

The unique fruit, which has a short late-summer season, has been the focus of the York County Pawpaw Festival for more than 20 years. Over the years, the festival has grown into a huge community event, with more than 2,300 visitors attending from up and down the East Coast, said Alexis Campbell, executive director of the Horn Farm Center, where the festival is held.

“Many festivalgoers over the years hail from New England, the Midwest, Florida, Georgia and even as far as Canada, all drawn to the region by this peculiar fruit,” she shared. “The attention and enthusiasm for pawpaws had grown more than we ever expected it could.”

So the Horn Farm pivoted, and this year’s festival will be

part of the Wild & Uncommon Weekend. The signature event of the weekend will be the Pawpaw Festival, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York. Wild & Uncommon Weekend events will be held from Thursday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Horn Farm Center and other venues nearby.

“In addition to the pawpaw fruit, the festival features local vendors, plant nurseries, farmers and crafters from around our region,” Campbell said. “While the festival is just a small taste of the local flavor that makes York County so unique, there is so much more to see and do - especially if you’re traveling from out of town. By expanding the event beyond the footprint of the Horn Farm, festivalgoers can enjoy exclusive offerings from local businesses, an abundance of food and local

produce, and family-friendly, outdoor activities, all celebrating the ‘wild and uncommon’ experiences of York County’s Susquehanna Riverlands.”

Highlights of the festival include a pawpaw cooking class on Sept. 26, with Locally Seasoned at Leg Up Farmers Market, 3100 N. George St., York; Sip & Learn: Snorkeling Local Streams with Lancaster Conservancy at Lavender Acres Winery, 4865 Libhart Mill Road, Hellam Township, on Friday, Sept. 27; Weird Fish & Fishing Weirs, a youth program with Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) that will run at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, on Saturday morning; a Wild & Uncommon After Party: Pawpaw Desserts & Mocktails at Firefly Hollow Wellness Center, 200 Farm Lane, York, on Saturday evening; and a Pawpaw Brunch & Learn at Horn Farm Center on Sept. 29.

Supporting families in need

In the lower level of the Columbia Borough School District offices, a community pantry provides support to families in need. Thanks to a partnership with Columbia Masonic Lodge 286, more students will have resources this coming school year.

Members of the lodge are encouraging people to donate school supplies, backpacks and other necessities to the community pantry. Donations will be accepted until Friday, Aug. 23, when they will become available for families in the district that need them.

Community rallies in wake of Tollbooth fire

On July 18, a fire tore through Tollbooth Antiques in Columbia, destroying the historic building and incinerating the inventory of more than 50 vendors who operate out of the space. Now the Columbia community has come together to support those in need through a variety of fundraisers.

On Saturday, Aug. 31, beginning at 9 a.m., Boltz Auction Company will host a benefit auction for the Tollbooth vendors.

It will feature both virtual and in-person components, and proceeds will directly support the people who operated stands in the warehouse, said Karl Boltz.

“I was struck by the tragedy when it happened, and I immediately went to see the owners the evening of the fire,” Boltz recalled. “I stood by and watched with them as the destruction happened. The next morning, it was clear to me that people were focusing on how sad it was that the building burned down,

End of Summer Band Jam will benefit Susquehanna Stage

It takes a village to support the work of Susquehanna Stage, and events committee member Joni McCrady is hoping members of that village turn out for a special event happening later this month.

The End of Summer Band Jam will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. on the gallery stage at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on Saturday, Aug. 24. Performers at the fundraiser will be Ian Aston and the Missing Peace, Tuesday Rains and Out of Nowhere.

Along with live music, the party will feature two food trucks located on Market Street in front of the theater, as well as drinks and desserts on sale in the concession area.

There is a charge for tickets, and proceeds from the event will benefit the community theater. “The

theater is growing, and many updates are necessary to accommodate the growth to service our community,” McGrady shared. “We have plans to update the facilities, accommodate all through ADA compliance and improve sight lines in the theater on our mainstage.”

This is the fourth year a live music event has supported Susquehanna Stage, McGrady said. “We felt before school starts up again, it would be fun to have an opportunity to bring people into the theater,” she stated. “Come out and enjoy a night of live music, drinks, dancing and local food trucks. Spend some time with community members from all over the central PA area, and celebrate the end of summer. … (It’s) a great event for the whole family to enjoy.”

hosts theater experiences throughout the year, and McGrady said events such as the End of Summer Band Jam help raise awareness of the nonprofit.

“We continue to be amazed at the number of local residents who are unaware of the tremendous talent showcased at our theater,” she commented. “We open our theater with shows, cabarets, events and educational opportunities for adults and children.”

Ongoing activities throughout the weekend include Biodynamic Exploration Tours at Dark Hollow Biodynamic, 6924 Dark Hollow Road, Wrightsville; River Discovery Boat Tours on the Susquehanna River with SNHA and more.

Along with expanding the festival’s activities, this year’s event also features expanded food focuses, Campbell commented. “We are also eager to introduce other novel food products that can be grown in our bioregion,” she said. “At the Horn Farm, attendees will discover the abundance that our ecosystem can provide, including locally grown persimmons, figs, kiwi berries, elderberry, tree nuts, mushrooms and more.”

Expanding the festival also parallels the farm’s approach to regenerative land stewardship, she stated, adding, “We are focusing on the whole ecosystem ... celebrating the businesses, products,

foods, landscape and experiences that make our community the wonderful place that it is to live, work and play.”

Tickets must be purchased in advance to attend the Pawpaw Festival. Tickets to the festival are available online only, and tickets will not be available for purchase at the door.

This year, festivalgoers may choose from three ticket options: general admission, with off-site parking and a shuttle and either premium early entry or VIP tickets for parking on-site. Admission is free for children age 12 and under.

Scott Zeamer, Columbia’s worshipful master, to create the local fundraiser.

“They had started doing a backpack and school supplies fundraiser for their district (in Lebanon), and it had really taken off,” Zeamer recalled.

The Masons got in touch with Columbia Borough School District administrators, who connected the organization with Brittany Kelley, home and school visitor for the district.

Kelley’s job includes working with families experiencing homelessness, serving as the foster care liaison for the district and operating the community pantry. She was happy to partner with the Masons to offer even more support to families.

“I have at least three families a week who use the pantry,” Kelley said, noting that the pantry includes shoes and clothing for people of all ages as well as nonperishable food items and bedding supplies such as air mattresses and pillows. At the end of this past school year, the district had identified 130 students who were homeless or experiencing transitional homelessness, she said.

The pantry relies wholly on donations from individuals, businesses and organizations. “If I’m lucky, sometimes we’ll have diapers and wipes to give out,” Kelley said. “It really depends on what we get. People can donate items, or they can donate funds to purchase items.”

For their fundraiser, the Masons created an Amazon Wish List of needs. It can be found at https://amzn .to/3y8xx5j.

Supplies that are needed the most include pocket folders with three prongs, three- to five-subject notebooks, mechanical pencils, manual pencil sharpeners, pencil boxes or cases and backpacks.

Items will be stored at the pantry, and as needs arise, families can come in, choose

a backpack and fill it with school supplies.

“Our goal is to remove as many barriers as possible,” Kelley said of the pantry’s mission. “We don’t have control over a lot of things, but we want to make sure we do what we can to help. If those barriers are removed, people can have that sense of belonging, and they can focus on some of the bigger things while we can take the edge off of some of the smaller things.”

Kelley noted that the pantry relies on a variety of community partners, including the Masons, to fulfill its mission. Volunteers from Manor Church helped to install shelves for clothes, and members of Reality Church organized and sorted clothing. Additional collaborators include Off the Streets, the Pennsylvania Furniture Mission and Hands Across the Street.

For the Masons, a project like this fits perfectly with the organization’s vision.

“Since the Columbia Masons moved their lodge back to Columbia in late 2022 … we have been looking for ways to make an impact in the community,” shared David Weaver, assistant treasurer, adding that the organization also gives back to students through scholarships given annually to high school seniors. “The Masons are here to help support the community of Columbia. This is the first annual fundraiser, and we plan to have this be one of our marquee fundraisers that we hold every summer going forward. The goal is to grow and expand the fundraiser every year as we move forward.”

For more information on the school supply drive, contact Kelley at 717-7190296 or Weaver at david .weaver.columbiano.286@ gmail.com. Donations may also be made in person at a drop box located at Hinkle’s Restaurant, 261 Locust St., Columbia.

Event at pool to feature yoga, aerialist, and more

A “Stretch Out the Summer” event will take place at Mountville Pool, 350 W. Main St., Mountville, on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Bumbling Circus Workshop will present the event, and proceeds will benefit SwimAmerica scholarships for local youths.

The event will commence with a vinyasa-style yoga class led by Deb Leschke, a teacher from Unique Physique in York and a pool regular. Katie Stewart, aerialist and owner of The Inversion Co., will give a poolside aerial silks performance and will be available to answer questions. With the help of volunteer celebrity lifeguards, the pool will be open for swimming throughout the event. Video highlight reels will be shown, recapping this season’s pool and yoga fun. The snack bar will remain open until 9 p.m., and guests are reminded that smoking, alcohol, and glass containers of any kind are not permitted at the pool. The final activity of the event will be a gentle restorative yoga class led by Albert “Stormy” Storm, a lifeguard and swim teacher at the pool. The event will also include prize giveaways.

This event is a collaborative effort headed up by coach Connor Rugenstein,

manager of Mountville Pool, and Storm. Rugenstein, an educator, has been involved at the pool since the age of 14, including swimming, coaching, and working. Storm, a local entrepreneur and retired Army veteran, operates the Bumbling Circus Workshop, through which he teaches yoga and aerial yoga and pursues a variety of artistic endeavors.

The event is free of charge for pool pass holders, with a fee for all others. Donations are welcome.

Funds raised from this event will benefit swim lessons for children from the local area. Vouchers for lessons with SwimAmerica will be made available to principals of local elementary schools to reward children who demonstrate good behavior. An effort will be made to direct these funds to students who might not otherwise be able to afford lessons.

For more details, email bumblingcircusworkshop@ gmail.com.

The Mountville Pool, located at Froelich Park, was constructed beginning in 1985 and opened to the public in the summer of 1989. Following a shutdown during the pandemic, the pool reopened. The 2024 season marks the 35th anniversary of the pool.

can be done right now?’ The immediate response in my mind was to get these people the help they need. These people are our friends, our neighbors. They are the people who are bringing other people into Columbia and driving the local economy.”

Boltz encourages the community to donate quality household items, collectibles and antiques for the auction, and he added that Trimbys Moving Service has offered moving services for items at no cost. People are also encouraged to purchase a gift card from a local restaurant or business to be auctioned off, he said. Through the years, Boltz has held a number of benefit auctions, and he sprang into action after the fire. “This is a natural way my brain works,” he said. “I thought, ‘What’s the most important thing that

Boltz emphasized how impressed he was by the efforts of local firefighters and first responders who battled the blaze. After the fire, he was on-site when one of the vendors, Kimberly Coover, showed him an American flag from her business, Utopia Home and Garden, that had somehow survived the destruction.

“We lost everything,” said Kimberly’s husband, Joe. “The day after the fire, a member of the Craley Fire Company called us and told us they had found this flag and wanted to keep it to put it on display at their firehouse.” Ultimately, the Coovers decided the flag, blackened but not destroyed, should be displayed at the warehouse as a symbol of resilience. It

will feature a banner thanking local first responders for their efforts in fighting the fire.

Efforts to raise funds for rebuilding the warehouse are also underway. Alan and Fiffer Raush have organized a GoFundMe page seeking donations. It can be accessed at https:// tinyurl.com/2bh8je9h.

Dave Zahm, owner of Bully’s Restaurant and Pub in Columbia, has pledged to donate 10% of meals on Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the month of August to the vendors. He and his chef, Bobby Schoelkopf, have also organized

a collection of cash and gift card donations, which will be distributed evenly among the vendors at the end of the month.

Boltz said the loss of Tollbooth Antiques will be felt well beyond the local area. “I have customers who come from Maryland, Texas, South Carolina, and they shared with me their memories of Tollbooth,” he said. “This is a devastating loss for Columbia.”

Donations for the benefit auction may be dropped off at Boltz Auctions, 3601 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. For more information, call 717-392-4257.
