Wild & Uncommon Weekend will feature Pawpaw Festival

It all started with a pawpaw.

The unique fruit, which has a short late-summer season, has been the focus of the York County Pawpaw Festival for more than 20 years. Over the years, the festival has grown into a huge community event, with more than 2,300 visitors attending from up and down the East Coast, said Alexis Campbell, executive director of the Horn Farm Center, where the festival is held.

“Many festivalgoers over the years hail from New England, the

Midwest, Florida, Georgia and even as far as Canada, all drawn to the region by this peculiar fruit,” she shared. “The attention and enthusiasm for pawpaws had grown more than we ever expected it could.”

So the Horn Farm pivoted, and this year’s festival will be part of the Wild & Uncommon Weekend. The signature event of the weekend will be the Pawpaw Festival, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York. Wild & Uncommon Weekend events will be held from Thursday, Sept. 26,

through Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Horn Farm Center and other venues nearby.

“In addition to the pawpaw fruit, the festival features local vendors, plant nurseries, farmers and crafters from around our region,” Campbell said. “While the festival is just a small taste of the local flavor that makes York County so unique, there is so much more to see and do - especially if you’re traveling from out of town. By expanding the event beyond the footprint of the Horn Farm, festivalgoers can enjoy exclusive offerings from local businesses, an abundance of food and local

produce, and family-friendly, outdoor activities, all celebrating the ‘wild and uncommon’ experiences of York County’s Susquehanna Riverlands.”

Highlights of the festival include a pawpaw cooking class on Sept. 26, with Locally Seasoned at Leg Up Farmers Market, 3100 N. George St., York; Sip & Learn: Snorkeling Local Streams with Lancaster Conservancy at Lavender Acres Winery, 4865 Libhart Mill Road, Hellam Township, on Friday, Sept. 27; Weird Fish & Fishing Weirs, a youth program with Susquehanna National Heritage

Merger ushers in new era in NSI’s war against human trafficking

North Star Initiative (NSI) is doubling down on its mission. The local nonprofit is adding to its resources and increasing its reach in the fight against human trafficking.

Recently, NSI absorbed Freedom and Restoration for Everyone Enslaved (F.R.E.E.), a Berks County-based nonprofit with similar goals, methods and beliefs, into its operations. It’s a move that will allow NSI to impact more survivors and achieve an even greater good.

“I’ve had a desire for collaboration,” said Melinda Clark, NSI’s executive director. “There’s too much work that needs to be done, and you can’t do it alone. We want to bring together skilled and passionate people. There’s so much chance of burnout from doing this restoration work. We are stronger together and more effective.”

“This shows that it’s possible for organizations to collaborate to make a difference in the movement,” added Clark. “This is not necessarily common in the nonprofit world. The movement is changing, and it’s a privilege to be on the front lines.”

After about a year of negotiations and red tape, NSI officially absorbed F.R.E.E. on July 1. In the summer of 2023, officials of F.R.E.E. approached NSI

Fig Tree grant winners announced Navy veteran to speak

Fig Industries recently announced the recipients of the 2024 Fig Tree grants. The grants represent more than just financial support; they symbolize the company’s commitment to nurturing Lancaster city’s small businesses and entrepreneurs.

In collaboration with the Lancaster County Community Foundation, Fig Industries established The Fig Tree in 2023. Thanks to additional support from local businesses and individuals, this year’s grant cycle had $35,000 available for distribution. Through a grant to Lancaster City Alliance, local businesses received $5,000 each to support growth and innovative new ideas.

The Fig Tree 2024 grant recipients are EsōArts, INGOMA Films,

Lancaster Gift Box, PAVAA Gallery, Pham Enterprises, Pocket Books Shop and RichStitch Embroidery.

Grant recipients were chosen by an independent advisory committee composed of seven individuals from across the community. Members of the committee reviewed and scored the responses of all applicants based on their ideas.

Local businesses that invested in The Fig Tree for its first year along with Fig Industries are Work Wisdom, Cargas, and Trout CPA. Several local individuals also contributed.

The next Fig Tree grant cycle will open in March 2025. Find more information and support The Fig Tree at www .lancfound.org/fund/ the-fig-tree.

The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will host John Wolfe as the speaker on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. at VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia.

Wolfe served in the Navy during World War II. His training, conducted at many U.S. Naval Air Centers, was on the PV-1 Ventura, a twin-engine bomber. He also served with an operating squadron that conducted anti-submarine patrols. Wolfe remained in the Navy Reserve following active duty and became a commercial pilot. He is also an aviation historian. He recently took part in an AARP program in June that grants the wishes of retired adults.

The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 717-319-3430.

“In terms of operations, it’s a merger. The legal term is acquisition,” said Clark. “I’m excited because this means we’re going to be serving more survivors more quickly. It makes the whole organization stronger. This work is complex and complicated. Any resources we have at our disposal are meant for the good of the movement. We want to make the entire movement more effective.”

“Over the next 90 days we will be very focused on training staff and analyzing policies so both teams can be effective,” said Clark. “We’re not going to rush things, and if we need to take our time, we will. One of the next key pieces will be to invite the community to see what we’ve accomplished so far. We want better outcomes for survivors. It’s what everyone wants. That’s the whole point.”

In addition to its continuation of F.R.E.E.’s services in Berks County, NSI has now established a physical presence in Reading, partly through the continued operation of F.R.E.E.’s Refuge Home, a residential facility for human trafficking survivors focused on trauma healing, similar to NSI’s The Harbor in Lititz.

NSI now has the capability to house and care for a total of 14 human trafficking survivors at any one time, up to eight at The Harbor in Lititz and up to six at the Refuge Home in Reading.

“This is the next step for F.R.E.E.,” said Andrea McHenry, F.R.E.E.’s former executive director and NSI’s new director of outreach and advocacy.

“North Star has experi -

NSI is one of at least four Lancaster County organizations currently battling human trafficking. Last year, NSI conducted more than 75 presentations to raise awareness about human trafficking in the community, and since its founding in 2010, the Lititz nonprofit has provided care for more than 80 survivors.

“I’d say this is unexpected, but desirable and not unimaginable,” said Clark of the F.R.E.E. merger. “The areas that nonprofits struggle in are executive leadership, developing boards and securing volunteers. We have so many resources and such a competent staff that organizations are trying to replicate it.”

Half marathons and more planned

The Garden Spot Village Half Marathon and 10K will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Participants may enjoy a scenic road race on a course surrounded by farmland. Additionally, the Kids Fun Run will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025. Registration

will open on Sunday, Sept. 1, at https:// gsv.run/. Community members may also register for the event’s sister race, the Bird-in-Hand Half Marathon, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7. To learn more, visit www .bihhalfmarathon.com.

GMTRC is serious about horsing around

For humans, interaction and physical contact with some animals can be soothing, intriguing or even therapeutic. Count horses among that group of special animals.

The healing power of horses is the premise upon which Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) is founded.

“There is a unique bond that can be found with a horse,” said Stephanie Fleck, GMTRC’s program director. “Science is starting to catch up and find out what horsemen have known for centuries. (Horses’) ability to read body language is higher than any other therapeutic animal. Horses can feel a human heartbeat from 4 feet away.”

“When you enter into a barn, you’re entering into that relationship,” continued Fleck. “If you come in with all this baggage, they pick up on that. That’s why equine therapy is so beneficial. You can’t lie to a horse.”

Located on 30 acres at

1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, GMTRC uses equine therapy to help at-risk individuals - folks with mental and physical disabilities, people with autism, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, inactive seniors, even some without a formal diagnosis. Through its lessons, programs and activities, GMTRC works with people from ages 4 to 80, both in one-on-one and in group settings. More than 200 people are served each year.

“There’s no way to replicate the movement of a horse, and it’s very beneficial and very therapeutic,” said Fleck. “People find the movement of a horse to be very calming. Our students may be able to connect with their equine partners in ways they can’t with human relationships. It’s having fun with your horse. It helps progress them in their everyday lives.”

PLACE AN AD

GMTRC is home to 10 horses. Its facilities include an indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding arena and spaces to ride in nature. But some individuals also benefit from simply taking care of the horses.

“We love and rely on our horses. They’re providing the services,” said Fleck. “A lot of people have heard

of us, but they really don’t know what we do. If people come out, we find that they fall in love with it. We serve a broad scope of our community. Everybody knows someone who can benefit from our services.”

Supported by a pool of 150 volunteers, GMTRC employs 10 staff members, three of whom are full time. GMTRC staff members are trained, but they are not licensed therapists or counselors.

“We have a large demand for services,” said Fleck. “Our services are provided by trained and certified staff, but we are not licensed therapists. We work on horsemanship goals. Therapists would work on clinical goals. There is a distinction there.”

Financed through donations, fundraising and grants, GMTRC began as Lancaster County Therapy Riding with seven students in 1981. In the beginning, the organization was operated entirely by volunteers.

“We’ve grown and grown over the years, and we’ve been able to add paid staff,” said Fleck. “We’re kind of poised for another growth period. We’re working hard to expand our services. Currently, our wait list is way too long. We’re looking at how to meet the needs of the community.”

End-of-summer activities

It may seem like just yesterday that people were heralding the arrival of summer, but soon the season will come to an end, making room for apples, corn, and pumpkin spice. However, families still have plenty of time to enjoy the pleasant weather.

For example, they may consider attending a concert. Summer is a time of year when many artists go on tour and sell out places from arenas to amphitheaters to more intimate venues. People may find a musical artist the entire family enjoys and buy tickets to a show.

Families may also visit orchards that offer oppor-

tunities for customers to pick their own produce. In Pennsylvania, fruits ready to pick in mid- to late summer may include peaches and various kinds of berries, which can be turned into pies for Labor Day festivities.

Those who didn’t have an opportunity to catch a fireworks display already this summer, or who enjoyed it so much that they want more, can look for upcoming fireworks displays. Some beachside towns and even amusement parks regularly host fireworks shows on the weekends.

Another possible activity is attending one of the many fairs that fill calendars this time of year. The events offer opportunities to enjoy carnival rides, fair foods, and live entertainment as well as to view livestock and other agricultural products.

Hot-air balloon festivals may take place this time of year. Families can check to see if there is one within driving distance.

Another possible destination is a botanical garden or arboretum, where people may view the trees, flowers, and shrubs in bloom. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a day in nature.

Back at home, families may enjoy an outdoor movie in the backyard. They may purchase or borrow a movie projector or even use a white sheet stretched between two poles. They may invite neighbors to come over, set up picnic blankets, and enjoy a family flick.

Families may consider taking advantage of the warm weather by pitching a tent at a campground or even in their backyard and spending an evening sleeping under the stars.

Throughout the summer, people may have already enjoyed a variety of activities, and they may consider choosing one to repeat. All members of the family may note what their favorite activities have been over the preceding weeks, such as paddleboarding on a lake or taking a scenic drive. Once the answers are compiled, people may pick one activity to enjoy all over again.

Families still have time to experience the wonders of summer through various activities before autumn begins.

New scholarships created

The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) has created $32,000 in academic scholarships. The scholarships will be split evenly into $16,000 for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate education in approved schools and who have also achieved the Student/Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (ST/CHMM) designation and $16,000 for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate education in approved schools and who also have the Student/Associate Safety and Health Manager (ST/ ASHM) designation.

IHMM has named this scholarship the Dr. John H. Frick Memorial IHMM Scholarship in honor of one of the principal founders of IHMM, who passed away in 2023.

To be eligible, an appli -

cant must be a full-time student who will be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program that is an IHMM-approved hazardous materials management or safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) degree program. Applicants should be in good academic standing in their IHMM-approved degree program with at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA. They must have at least one full academic year remaining at the time of the application deadline, and they must demonstrate a desire to enter the hazardous materials management or SH&E profession upon graduation.

The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 18. For more information, visit https:// ihmm.org/scholarship/ or email info@ihmm.org.

Pet walk and fundraiser planned

ClassONE Property Restoration will hold a “Save Our Pets” Project pet walk and fundraiser event on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon at Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail in Manheim. The event will include a pet walk, vendors offering pet-related products and services, a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses, a selection of food trucks, a pet photo shoot and caricature drawings and a fire truck display.

Admission to the firsttime event is free, and people of all ages are welcome. Those who are participating in the pet walk must register in

advance and will be asked to pay a fee per pet. Each registered pet walker will receive a complimentary event T-shirt as well as a bandana for his or her pet. All proceeds will be used to fund the purchase of Wag’N O2 Fur Life pet oxygen mask kits for local fire companies, as well as other pet emergency services such as covering the cost of boarding for pets displaced by fire and covering adoption fees for families looking to adopt a pet after losing their own in a fire.

To learn more and register for the walk, visit www.facebook.com/class onepropertyrestoration or www.classoneresto ration.com.
