Hellam Carnival Will Bring Out The Fun Old-fashioned fun will take center stage when the Hellam Carnival returns after taking last year off due to the pandemic. The carnival will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 25 and 26, from 6 to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27 and 28, from 5 to 10 p.m. in the baseball fields off of West Beaver Street in Hallam Borough. “We have nightly entertainment, and we have some really great bands this year,” said Mark Potosky, chairman of the carnival. “ We have food vendors, lots of rides and games. We have a lot of nonprofits who will be there as well, like the Boy Scouts and Lions Club.” See Carnival pg 4

and staff will be here giving tours of the new facility,” said Corina Mann, township manager. “Board (of Supervisors) members will be here as well.” The new facility is located directly across the street from the old building, and it offers much more space to house township administration, the police

department and the ambulance department, Mann noted. “Our old building was 8,000 square feet,” she stated. “This one is 17,000 square feet.” The larger layout will allow the township staff to operate more efficiently, she added. “We were really on top of each other in the old space,” she said. “We’ll be better

Although the facility has been open since last fall, COVID-19 restrictions prevented an official open house until now, Mann explained.

United Way of York County is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2021 and is asking the community, “What’s Your 100?” In answer to this question, United Way of York County board member Andrew Koplitz; his wife, Nicole; and their three children set a goal of collecting 100 books for United Way’s #yorkreads initiatives. The Koplitzes, who reside in Windsor Township, far exceeded their goal by collecting 412 books. Contributions came from Andrew’s workplace, PeoplesBank, A Codorus Valley Company; Nicole’s workplace, North Hills Elementary School in Central York School District; and family and friends.

Carnival from pg 1 Friday night’s festivities will feature a car show, with trophies awarded in various categories. The car show will begin at 5 p.m. On Saturday morning, a horseshoe tournament will be held, and monetary prizes will be presented. To register for the horseshoe tournament, contact Barry Sweitzer at 717-755-4406. Potosky said that ride-allnight wristbands will be available each evening during the carnival and that admission to the carnival is free. On Saturday evening, the carnival will wrap up with fireworks at 9:30 p.m. “They will be really outstanding fireworks,” Potosky stated. “It will be something to see.” The carnival started more than a decade ago, when members of Hellam Recreation were looking for an event to bring the community together. “There used to be a carnival back in the day and Phil Smith, the township supervisor, said, ‘Why don’t we have a carnival again?’” Potosky recalled. “Everybody jumped on board, because we all liked the idea. As a recreation group, we did so many activities for the youths, but we didn’t really have any activities for adults or anyone else

in the community. We felt the carnival was one way we could reach part of the community our organization wasn’t touching.” Although Hellam Recreation no longer organizes the carnival, the event’s mission has remained the same. It’s a chance to bring people together to socialize and have fun, Potosky said. “We also have the support of the fire department and ambulance and the fire police, who direct traffic,” he said. “ We have policemen who walk through and make sure everything is going smoothly. The carnival is a total community endeavor.”

Open House from pg 1 The decision to build a new facility was not taken lightly, said Phil Smith, chair of the board of supervisors. The old building dates to at least the 1970s, and it needed extensive repairs, he explained. Since the township already owned the land across the street, the decision was made to build a new facility rather than trying to fix the old one. The old building will be given to the Kreutz Creek Library, which will move from its current FEMA trailer location next door. To complete the project, the township hired a grant writer and a financial adviser, who helped keep the construction within budget, Mann said. “We received over $1 million in grants,” she stated. Lobar Associates handled the design and building of the project, which allowed the township to customize the plans to meet its specific needs, including creating a covered and gated area for police cars to park. “We now have the space to

upgrade our police department,” Smith said, noting that the department is working toward accreditation and the improved facility will help achieve that goal. The open house will be the first time the public has been invited into the building since it opened, Smith remarked. It’s important for township members to see where their tax dollars are going, he said. “Part of our vision in building this was to be as transparent as possible so people can see what we’re doing with their money,” he commented. “Even though our space is bigger, we did everything in a frugal way. We didn’t build a Taj Mahal.” Mann invited anyone who is interested to come to the open house and meet the people who serve the community. “Come out and see more about how the municipality runs,” she said. A Story Of HOPE

Forry’s Country Store

BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, an organization that helps create financial solvency in 15 countries through savings and microfinance groups, looks back on the last 18 months, he points out that the organization did something out of the ordinary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We initially (gave) a lot of aid,” said Rutt, who noted that HOPE spent $1 million to help clients. Rutt praised HOPE CEO Peter Greer for his leadership of the organization through the tumultuous time. “(None of us) knew what we were facing, but there was a

lot of prayer, reliance on God, our board, our team, and the indigenous leaders and clients in the world,” he said. To help offset those expenditures, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its 21st annual golf tournament, to be held at three different locations on Friday, Sept. 17. The round at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave.,York, will begin at 1 p.m. Two rounds will be held the same day at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Dr., Lebanon, beginning at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. The third location will be Bridgewater Golf Club, 601 Chestnut Hill Road, York, beginning at 9 a.m. More information about the tournaments may be found at www.hopeinternational.org/ pagolf. Those who wish to sponsor the event may email asmith@hopeinternational.org or call 717-464-3220, ext. 544. Golfers are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 3. Rutt noted that the pandemic pushed what he calls the “fragile fringe,” of about 100 million people below the poverty line. “But there were bright spots,” added Rutt. “There was resilience, and a lot of our clients have grown.” Rutt went on to tell the story of Marie Ndereyimana, a client in Burundi, East Africa. After Marie’s husband died in

Jeff Rutt (left) and Brian Boycan are preparing for HOPE International’s golf tournament on Sept. 17.

2014, all his property reverted back to his family, as is the custom in that country. Marie was connected to a church that hosts a HOPE International savings group called Mutual Support. Marie joined the group and grew both spiritually and in her business sense. “She was making about 50 cents a day working in fields and gardens,” said Rutt, who noted that Marie was able to save 25 cents a week from her pay, and with a $5 loan from the group she started a small business selling avocados and bananas. Eventually Marie began keeping goats, and she purchased rental properties. When Marie learned that members of her deceased husband’s family were in financial trouble, she forgave them and helped them financially. “She

got them connected to their own savings groups,” said Rutt. “It’s a really cool cycle because she used her talents and skills, and she is now able to help others in the community,” he added. “(Marie is) not just better off financially, but (she had) forgiveness and compassion on someone (about whom) she could have said, ‘I don’t want anything to do with (them) because of what they did to (me).’” According to Rutt, Marie’s story is an example of the heart behind HOPE. “The cool thing is that over the course of 23 years we have been able to raise about $200 million, but we have been able to lend $1.3 billion,” said Rutt. “It’s a really effective way to help … by partnering with strong, working, (deserving) families like Marie’s.”

On the Squish Squad’s first educational and scouting trip earlier this summer in Lancaster County, students found a few spotted lanternflies in their black and white-spotted nymph stage, charted the insects’ locations, and then squashed them. Students also spent time learning more about the insects and planning activities for late summer and fall. The Squad plans to partner with county conservation districts and nature preserves. It also intends to lead workshops on how to build spotted lanternfly traps using materials found around the home. A project working group is taking photos of spotted lanternflies in various life stages for a pamphlet the students plan to produce. CBF’s Student Leadership

During its first in-person meeting in 16 months, held on July 12, the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) promoted seven cadets and handed out awards. The squadron meets each Monday at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets Hangar at Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Squadron commander Maj. Jerome E. “Pepper” Broad promoted seven cadets and awarded program ribbons to them. Broad also recognized the squadron’s cadet commander, Cadet First Lt. Jurnee M. Acosta, for completing an important step in her work toward earning the Amelia Earhart Award and

promotion to captain. Aaron Keohane and Slater Shannon were each promoted to cadet airman first class and presented with the Hap Arnold Achievement Ribbon, to be worn on their dress blue uniform. This was their second promotion. Five cadets, who are relatively new to the program, received the Curry Achievement Ribbon and their first promotion, to cadet airman. They are Jereco Acosta, Dean Garber, Gretchen Garber, Lucas Horst and Dhruvan Sundaram. CAP cadets are active in the emergency services and aerospace education missions assigned to them by the U.S. Air Force. Additionally, they participate in an annual weeklong
