Dam Bridge Challenge will support Riverkeeper Association

You can help to ensure the quality of the water in the Susquehanna River by getting out on the river during the sixth annual Dam Bridge Challenge. The fundraiser to benefit the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning and ending at the Lock 2 Recreation Area, 2140 Fishing Creek Road, Wrightsville.

Participants are invited to compete in three paddle races - a 10-mile route, a 3-mile course or a quarter-mile kids’ race - or enjoy a 1-mile recreational paddle during the event, which will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. before the first boats hit the water at 9 a.m.

“Typically for the Challenge, we get a wide array of boats out on the water, from surfskis, which are very fast kayaks, to outrigger canoes, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and recreational canoes,” said Ted Evgeniadis, executive director of the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Participants should bring their own boats, although there is equipment available for rent for people who need it.

The event gets its name from the 10-mile race, which pits participants against each other

either up river or down river, Evgeniadis shared.

When the race started six years ago, the Riverkeeper Association’s office was located at Shank’s Mare Outfitters along the river. An employee who is an avid stand-up paddleboarder and kayaker had the idea for the challenge race because of the organization’s location.

“It’s 5 miles from there to the

Safe Harbor Dam, and it’s 5 miles to the Route 462 bridge that connects Wrightsville to Columbia,” Evgeniadis explained. “On the day of the event, the direction is chosen, and the registrants don’t know which way it will be - either to the dam and back or to the bridge and back.”

Prizes will be awarded for the top three male and female winners in a variety of age groups, and all

participants will receive a reusable tote swag bag filled with freebies.

Live music and refreshments will be featured at the race’s conclusion.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Founded in 2006, the organization works to promote clean water.

One night over dinner earlier this year, Erika Herold was talking with her husband, Jim Switzenberg, about people in need in their community.

Herold recalled that Wrightsville resident Alicia Ferrari was organizing a summer lunch program at Wrightsville Presbyterian Church to offer free lunch to school-age children weekdays from June through mid-August. “I thought it was incredible how many children need this program,” Herold said. “I wanted a way to help take a burden off (these families).”

The couple are no strangers to giving back. Switzenberg, one of the owners of John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville, regularly supports families in need through a variety of initiatives, including his participation in food giveaways through the Masons.

“We both thought, ‘These kids need more. There should be more help out there,’” Herold said. Working with Don Mann, who operates a farm in Millersville, the couple decided to support the children participating in the summer lunch program - and

Goodlin’s work is part of CBF’s Watershed Resiliency Program in Pennsylvania.

As Pennsylvania watershed resiliency field specialist, Goodlin will conduct landowner outreach, partner with agencies and other organizations to connect landowners with Resiliency Program funding, and support the implementation of priority strategies, like riparian buffers, that reduce polluted runoff. Flu vaccinations available

The Giant Company has announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.

Flu shots for the 202425 flu and cold season are all trivalent and intended to protect against three strains of influenza: H1N1, H3N2 and a B/Victoria lineage virus. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies carry several different types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors, including standard and high-dose products.

Most insurance plans cover flu shots with $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists and specially trained pharmacy team members, subject to state regulations.

Walk-ins are welcome, but customers can also make an appointment if they prefer. In addition, starting on Friday, Aug.

30, customers who present their Giant or Martin’s card and receive a flu shot can get an offer for $5 off $25 of a future grocery order.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone 6 months and older, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over age 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s pharmacy app.

Tips for beating seasonal traffic

No one wants to get stuck in traffic, especially when they are trying to get away to enjoy summertime activities such as Labor Day events. Although there is no foolproof way to prevent idling behind a long row of vehicles, there are strategies to reduce the odds of being stuck in traffic.

Carpooling can reduce the number of cars on the road, so people may consider traveling with friends or family members heading to the same place. People can share the driving responsibilities. Traffic also may be less irritating with others in the car to talk to.

People may consider traveling overnight, as the number of cars on the road may be smaller at this time. Kids likely will sleep during the ride, and adults can take a nap when they get to their destination. Traveling very early may not suffice in the summer, as people often leave their homes at dawn to grab prime real estate at the beach.

“There’s a lot of great organizations that support the area around the Chesapeake Bay watershed,” Evgeniadis said. “This one supports work that is crucial to keep our drinking water safe, to make sure the water people recreate in is safe.”

He encourages anyone who is interested to join the challenge, noting that the event puts a premium on safety.

get out on the water,” he said. “This event is on the Susquehanna, but it’s being held on Lake Clarke, which is a reservoir formed behind Safe Harbor dam, so the water is super flat with little to no current. It’s on the river, but it’s like paddling on a lake.” Organizers will also station safety boats throughout the length of the race, ready to relieve tired boaters or help with any emergencies.

“We encourage everyone to come and experience the Susquehanna River, to get out on it,” Evgeniadis commented. “When you come to the Dam Bridge Challenge, you’re enjoying a time to come together and celebrate our successes while sup -

gate in certain hot spots during the summer and on holidays. Beach locales are popular destinations, so travelers may want to reserve the beach for weekdays when they are not so packed. On weekends and holidays, travelers may head inland or to a lake or river if they desire a water retreat.

Leaving the car at home and taking public transportation may be a better option on gridlocked summer weekends and holidays. Explore the availability of public transportation in the area.

Another way to avoid traffic is to stay close to home. People can make their home the party hub and have others come to them for barbecues or time in the pool. Hosting is extra work, but that can be offset by avoiding the stress of traveling.

Heavy traffic is a common feature of summer and warm weather holidays. Avoiding the stop-and-go may be possible with planning and patience.

To qualify for the dean’s honor list, a student must earn a GPA of at least 3.5 and complete 12 or more credit hours without any incomplete grades.

the greater community as well - through a garden planted next to John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville.

The garden is truly a community effort, with the space donated by Donsco, a Wrightsville-based manufacturer that also donated soil and plants to establish the garden. Specialty Tree Service donated wood for the garden’s base layer as well as top soil. Jamie Livelsberger of Electrician Magician wired

Saturday, September 7th

cameras for the garden.

John Wright Restaurant employee Bowen Butler ordered banners and helped with many details while Herold and others got to work cleaning up wornout, unused garden beds on the property next to the restaurant.

The result of their efforts is the Wrightsville Community Garden sponsored by Donsco, a garden full of native plants and produce, including tomatoes, zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant and more. All items are grown organically without pesticides.

Produce from the garden was used to complement meals provided by John Wright Restaurant weekly for the summer lunch program. The rest of the garden’s abundance is available for anyone in the

community who would like some, Herold said.

“I think the garden has been a little confusing for some people,” Herold shared with a laugh. “I think people are like, ‘I can come and take something for free?’ Yes, it’s here for anyone. It’s open to everyone.”

Although the summer is winding down, the garden continues to produce vegetables, and Herold plans to plant winter-hardy options such as kale to extend the garden into the cooler weather.

She hopes people will use the garden to supplement their produce needs, while children will have the opportunity to see how plants grow.

“I think a lot of kids don’t even know what vegetables look like before they’re in a store,” Herold said. “They

can come and see this. If you have a black thumb, and you can’t grow anything, you can come and take something here. If you don’t have the space for your own garden, or you travel and can’t maintain a garden, come by and grab what you need. It’s for anybody.”

Encouraged by the response to the garden this year, Herold is looking forward to expanding the space next summer.

In the meantime, she hopes people will stop by and pick some veggies.

“Maybe you have an elderly neighbor who can’t get out,” she said. “Come by and get something for them. Bring your kids. Come and see what we have.”

For more information on the garden, follow “Wrightsville Community Garden sponsored by Donsco” on Facebook.

Webinar to focus on feral hogs

Penn State Extension will hold a webinar, “A Squeal for Help: Preventing Feral Hog Invasions,” on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at noon.

Feral hogs are one of the most damaging non-native species in North America. Historically confined to the Southeastern United States, they have spread and now threaten forests, wetlands, and other habitats from Florida to Saskatchewan. In the webinar, participants will learn about the role humans play in feral hog invasions, strategies to slow their spread, and early intervention steps for new invasions. The program is designed for foresters, landowners, biologists, and other interested parties.
