Spooky fun at Fête en Noir

Some might consider it a spooky date, but Friday the 13th is the perfect time for Fête en Noir, a fundraiser organized by the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery. The event will be held on Sept. 13 in the cemetery, located at 700 Locust St., Columbia. Entrance to the grounds will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run from 6 to 9 p.m.

“How appropriate is it that the fête falls on Friday, the 13th this year?” mused Kathleen Hohenadel, a member of the Mount Bethel Cemetery board of directors.

“Guests may expect a relaxing evening complete with music, conversation and fundraisers throughout the event. This is a great opportunity to connect with family and friends while enjoying a slightly upscale picnic atmosphere.

Tiki torches and other low-level lighting will provide a warm glow, and attendees will leave with a warm feeling of having supported a worthy cause.”

Guests are invited to bring their own picnics for the party. People are encouraged to dress in black and to create a festive atmosphere by inviting friends and sharing seating at tables that

will be set up in the cemetery. Live music will be provided by the Todd Fulginiti Trio. This three-piece group highlights the musical talents of Fulginiti, who has performed with musicians including Ray Charles and Frankie Valli throughout his long career.

As Hohenadel explained, the fête celebrates the history of the cemetery, which is the final resting place of many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. The cemetery dates to the early 1700s and was incorporated in the mid-1800s.

Enjoy produce from a community garden

One night over dinner earlier this year, Erika Herold was talking with her husband, Jim Switzenberg, about people in need in their community.

Herold recalled that Wrightsville resident Alicia Ferrari was organizing a summer lunch program at Wrightsville Presbyterian Church to offer free lunch to school-age children weekdays from June through mid-August.

The couple are no strangers to giving back. Switzenberg, one of the owners of John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville, regularly supports families in need through a variety of initiatives, including his participation in food giveaways through the Masons.

“We both thought, ‘These kids need more. There should be more help out there,’” Herold said. Working with Don Mann,

“I thought it was incredible how many children need this program,” Herold said. “I wanted a way to help take a burden off (these families).”

who operates a farm in Millersville, the couple decided to support the children participating in the summer lunch programand the greater community as well - through a garden planted next to John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville.

The garden is truly a community effort, with the space donated by Donsco, a Wrightsville-based manufacturer that also donated soil and plants to establish the garden. Specialty Tree Service donated wood for the garden’s base layer as well as top soil. Jamie Livelsberger of Electrician Magician wired cameras for the garden. John Wright Restaurant employee Bowen Butler ordered banners and helped with many details while Herold and others got to work cleaning up worn-out, unused garden beds on the property next to the restaurant.

The result of their efforts is the Wrightsville Community Garden sponsored

by Donsco, a garden full of native plants and produce, including tomatoes, zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant and more. All items are grown organically without pesticides.

Produce from the garden was used to complement meals provided by John Wright Restaurant weekly for the summer lunch program. The rest of the garden’s abundance is available for anyone in the community who would like some, Herold said.

“I think the garden has been a little confusing for some people,” Herold shared with a laugh. “I think people are like, ‘I can come and take something for free?’ Yes, it’s here for anyone. It’s open to everyone.”

Although the summer is winding down, the garden continues to produce vege tables, and Herold plans to plant winter-hardy options such as kale to extend the garden into the cooler

weather.

She hopes people will use the garden to supplement their produce needs, while children will have the opportunity to see how plants grow.

“I think a lot of kids don’t even know what vegetables look like before they’re in a store,” Herold said. “They can come and see this. If you have a black thumb, and you can’t grow anything, you can come and take something here. If you don’t have the space for your own garden, or you travel and can’t maintain a garden, come by and grab what you need. It’s for

anybody.”

Encouraged by the response to the garden this year, Herold is looking forward to expanding the space next summer.

In the meantime, she hopes people will stop by and pick some veggies.

“Maybe you have an elderly neighbor who can’t get out,” she said. “Come by and get something for them. Bring your kids. Come and see what we have.”

Cat cafés are becoming more and more popular in big cities and smaller ones, as more people are appreciating the love that we all share for animals and their well-being.”

I knew that I wanted to work with them because of the attitude they have towards the animals they help and their mission to create a more humane environment for animals, provide education to the community and foster a love of pets. Lanza first visited a cat café in San Francisco and fell in love with the concept, adding, “Since then, I’ve tried to go to one in every new city I travel to.”

Partnering with Columbia Animal Shelter was a natural fit.

“I’ve visited Columbia Animal Shelter before as a patron/just a guest and couldn’t believe how wonderful the space was,” Lanza shared. “Everything was so clean. The cats were so relaxed,

As Lanza explained, the cat café will be multifaceted. “Hypothetically, if someone is interested in just coming in to have some coffee and a pastry, they will be able to sit and enjoy the café atmosphere without interacting with cats at all,” Lanza remarked. “However, if the plan is to play with cats, this will be reservation based. Folks will be able to call or go online to our website, which is coming soon, and book a 30-minute or hourlong reservation - fondly called ‘Cat Seshes’ - to spend time in the rooms with the adoptable cats free-roaming.” Customers who are interested in adopting a cat will be directed to the Columbia Animal Shelter’s website to apply online and will be contacted by shelter staff members for the next steps.

Lanza shared that opening a business required a leap of faith, explaining, “I never imagined myself being an entrepreneur or running a business at all. I have a background in education and taught special ed for five years before coming to Lancaster. Teaching was incredibly rewarding, and I am very passionate about providing accessibility to those with special needs.”

After leaving teaching, Lanza became a barista in a busy coffee shop, which provided the perfect background for running the café portion of the Lancaster business.

Lanza hopes people will give Lancatster Cat Café a try.

“Adopting an animal is one of the greatest joys in life - knowing that by coming together, you and your new pet will be enhancing each other’s lives and becoming enmeshed in such a unique way,” Lanza said. “We adopt pets simply because we have love to give and want love in return. And I think that’s beautiful.”

The second annual Pete Ruggieri Memorial Un-Run will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville. Participants must be age 21 and up unless they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and a ticket for the event will include food and a beverage from the bar. Proceeds will benefit Jefferson Health’s Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center to assist its research of thyroid cancer treatments.

The fundraiser will offer a clever take on the traditional 5K run format: Although participants are encouraged to arrive in their favorite activewear in preparation for the “race” at 3 p.m., the “runners” will only need to take one step to cross the finish line. After completing all 0.0 miles of the course, participants may celebrate by enjoying a meal provided by The Fat Is Where It’s At Barbeque. Registration will include one meal ticket, and a meal will include pulled pork, pulled chicken, macaroni and cheese, smoked beans and coleslaw.

In addition to entry in the “lengthy” run, registration will include a numbered race bib, a 0.0 sticker and participation in prize drawings. Door prizes will include items donated by local businesses and organizations such as Tellus360, the Lancaster Stormers, Stubby’s Bar and Grille, John Wright Restaurant and Passenger Coffee. The event will also feature yard games, tabletop games and other festivities.

The concept of a runless race was the brainchild of Pete Ruggieri, who died in March 2023 after a long battle with thyroid cancer. Ruggieri started organizing the event a few years ago, but his plans were placed on hold due to safety restrictions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic

and Ruggieri’s declining health. After Ruggieri’s death, his wife, Stephanie Horst, began organizing the fundraiser in his memory, and the first Un-Run was held in September 2023. “I decided it was such a great idea that I couldn’t let it die with him,” Horst said. Ruggieri was known to many in the Lancaster community as the founder of the Santa Stumble, an annual bar crawl that raised more than $200,000 for the horses and dogs in the City of Lancaster Bureau of Police’s mounted patrols and K-9 units. Nearly 100 community members participated in the first Un-Run, raising approximately $6,000 and sharing stories in memory of their favorite local jokester. “Pete was a clown, but he didn’t want the attention; he did it because he really

observed its 150th anniversary of incorporation, one of the celebratory events was a Fête en Noir held at a local venue,” she shared. “When the committee for the anniversary held a debriefing, it was decided to continue the fête but to move it outdoors to the cemetery grounds, modeled after the Fête en Blanc held in Lancaster.”

Funds raised by the fête help to offset maintenance costs at the cemetery. “Some of the projects and costs that Friends of Mount Bethel has been able to offset include the cost of mowing the grounds, maintenance of the macadam walkways and help with painting costs,” Hohenadel said.

Friends of Mount Bethel, a 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 2017 as a fundraising arm of Mount Bethel Cemetery.

recognized the importance of having fun. That’s kind of how he served the world,” said Horst. “I think we build relationships with each other by having fun, and Pete saw it as essential.”

While Ruggieri’s health declined, he participated in a clinical trial at Sidney

The group supports the mission of Mount Bethel Cemetery by organizing events that serve the dual purposes of promoting awareness of the cemetery and raising funds to maintain the grounds. The Fête en Noir is made possible through the sponsorship of the Foresters of America Court Susquehanna 235, the Columbia-Middletown Elks Lodge 1074, Nikolaus & Hohenadel, the Columbia Fraternal Association and KleenRite Corporation.

Admission to Fête en Noir is by reservation only. To make a reservation, call the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery at 717-681-6768 or email friendsofmt bethel@gmail.com. In the case of rain, the event will be moved to St. John’s Lutheran Church, a neighbor of Mount Bethel Cemetery.

Bike & Hike will back COBYS’ good works

COBYS Family Services’ upcoming multifaceted Bike & Hike event is the organization’s biggest and most beneficial fundraiser.

“My favorite part is seeing everyone come together,” said Anne Stokes, who’s been COBYS’ director of development for six years. “There is a lot going on that day. But the beauty is that the participants can pick what makes the best sense to them. There are a lot of different options so participants can choose what they want to be a part of. It’s amazing to see a lot of different people.”

“It’s a very family-friendly event,” said Stokes. “The day itself is very fun and uplifting. It’s people deciding to go do something exciting and be a part of what COBYS is doing. People come with smiles on their faces. You’re helping foster kids; you’re helping to provide counseling services. It’s a relaxed day. We encourage everyone to join us if they can.”

The Bike & Hike event features a 25-mile bicycle ride that begins at 12:30 p.m., a 10-mile bicycle ride that begins at 1:30 p.m. and a 3-mile walk that begins at 1:30 p.m. Registration for the rides and walk is now open at www.cobys. org and can also be done on the day at the event.

A group of several hundred family members, community members and supporters are expected to attend COBYS’ Bike & Hike. Organizers are hoping to make $130,000 from a combination of the event proceeds and preevent fundraising.

“COBYS’ mission is important because all of us have times in our lives when we need assistance,” said Stokes. “Our mission is to find kids and families in need of an extra set of hands and someone to walk alongside of. Kids are the next generation of society. We want them to go into their next phase of life with success.”

COBYS Family Services, which is located at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, was founded in 1979.

More than 100 community members attended the first Un-Run, which took place in downtown Lancaster.
