Find a bargain at Fall Fest
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
As summer winds down, the residents of St. John’s Herr Estate are ready to serve up fun, flavor and fantastic finds during the annual Fall Fest. The event will be held at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The indoor yard sale will feature a large variety of items, said Carolyn Livingston, who is helping to organize the event.
“We have it set up in departments,” she said. “We have jewelry. We have baked goods. We line up
paintings along the walls in the second-floor hallway. We have items for the kitchen, decorative items, puzzles, seasonal items, electronics, linens. We have oodles and oodles of books, CDs, DVDs and other mixed media.”
As resident Mary Miller stated, “You could almost decorate your entire apartment with everything you find here.”
New this year, visitors to Fall Fest will have the opportunity to win a handmade quilt as well.
Along with yard sale items, Fall Fest will feature a variety of food. Baked goods prepared by residents will be for sale, as
well as hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages. Chicken corn soup, prepared by the St. John’s Herr Estate chef, will be available by the bowl or quart.
“People can take their food to go, or they can sit in our dining room and eat here,” Livingston said.
Fall Fest has been held at St. John’s for more than 20 years. Items for sale are donated by residents and their families, and a group of people helps to sort and price everything.
“Originally, we started sorting and pricing a few weeks before Fall Fest,” Livingston said. “Last year, we started in April. This

When children participate in the Bible2School program, they can build a relationship with Jesus and gain a knowledge of how much He loves them, said Margie Moran, site director of Park Elementary School’s program.
“Bible2School is a program that teaches children about the Bible. It also teaches them who Jesus is, how to pray to Him and
that He is always with them and loves them,” Moran explained.
Bible2School is open to children in grades two, three and four. Classes meet at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 616 Locust St., Columbia, located across the street from Park Elementary. Third-graders meet on Tuesdays, fourth-graders on Wednesdays and second-graders on Thursdays. Classes will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

and the mind-body connection. Modifications will be offered to improve comfort, and the class will be trauma informed. Participants should wear loose clothing and bring a yoga mat. The program is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

Attendees will learn how to transform sweet tea into tangy kombucha, along with flavoring and carbonation techniques to customize a brew. They will learn about culturing water kefir grains and mastering the art of secondary fermentation to create water kefir, an alternative to traditional sodas. Participants will leave the class with jars of initiated kombucha and water kefir, a kombucha SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast), and water kefir grains.
“Frozen
JR.” shares message of the power of love
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Love can conquer all, and that message will take the spotlight when Susquehanna Stage presents “Frozen JR.” The show will be performed at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates between Friday, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 21.
Based on the popular Disney movie, “Frozen JR.” tells the story of two sisters, one born with magical powers and one without, said Brielle Grove, who portrays Elsa in the show.
“Anna and Elsa grow up together, but when they were children, there was an accident with the powers, and Elsa hurt her younger sister, and they slowly separate after their parents pass away,” she explained. “The whole show is basically Elsa learning how to control her powers and also share them with her kingdom and embrace it.”
Like the movie, “Frozen JR.” features well-known songs such as “Let It Go,” “Fixer Upper” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”
The stage version, which is a shorter show designed for young audiences, also includes new songs, including “Hygge,” which is performed by Oaken and his family.
Performing in the show is exciting, said Jordyn Good, who plays Olaf, but it also comes with a bit of pressure.
“Everybody knows these characters,” she said. “Olaf
is happy and fun, so you just have to be happy and fun. It’s kind of difficult to be the way Olaf would act, but then to put it into your own character. You just have to have fun with it.”
For Brielle, an eighthgrader in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, mastering the song “Let It Go” has been challenging, but she’s up for it.
“I’m definitely nervous about it, because it’s such a well-known song, so there’s a bit of pressure,” she said. “But it’s also really fun to sing it, especially in your own way. Getting to sing it my own way is super fun.”
She’s also working hard on mastering a difficult quick change, when her regular dress transforms into Elsa’s snow queen outfit during the song.
“The quick change is kind of stressful, but at the same time, it’s going to be so fun and cool, especially for the

school by Bible2School volunteers and are escorted to the church during the lunch/recess time,” Moran explained. While children eat their lunch, volunteers lead the class.
“The volunteers engage the children in lively worship, Bible stories and break into small groups,” she said. “In the small groups, the volunteers build relationships with their students, invest into their lives and pray together.”
Program volunteers serve as positive mentors for the students, encourag-
ing the children to believe that they are valued and loved and that they have a purpose, she said.
“God says He knows the plans He has for them - plans for good and not for disaster, to give them a future and a hope,” she said. “Everyone needs just one person to believe in them, and that’s what our team of volunteers do. They have a love for Jesus and a love for the children. When that’s combined, you raise up a generation of children that believe they can do anything.”
Bible2School began in 1979 in Manheim and has expanded to more than 30 schools throughout the county and the state. The program came to Columbia Borough School District last year.
Moran noted that Bible2School is always seeking volunteers. “The more volunteers, the more children we can have be a part of the program,” she commented.
“A good volunteer is someone who loves the Lord and loves children.”
little ones in the audience to be like, ‘Whoa! How’d she do that?’” she said.
“Frozen JR.” features a cast of more than 50 students and is part of the theater’s Children’s Workshop programming. Students range in age from 7 to 14 years old.
Along with characters made famous in the movie, the stage show includes a dance ensemble called the Snow Chorus, Brielle shared.
“They follow me through almost all my songs,” she said. “They do a lot of fun, beautiful, elegant dancing.”
Many of the students in the production, including Brielle and Jordyn, have participated in Susquehanna Stage’s workshop performances before.
“It’s so fun being a part of this theater,” stated Jordyn, an eighth-grader who attends Donegal Junior High School. “Anything we do here is so fun.”
Added Brielle, “If your kid ever expressed wanting to do something like this or loves singing, loves acting, I would definitely recommend starting here because it’s such a fun experience.”
Both girls invite audiences to come to the show for an entertaining hour of singing and dancing on stage.
“If you grew up watching the movie, it’s really fun to see it come to life on stage,” Jordyn said. “It’s definitely a family show, so if you have children, come see it. Who doesn’t love ‘Frozen’?”
“Frozen JR.” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 13, 14, 20 and 21, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sept. 14 and 21 and Sunday, Sept. 15. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.susque hannastage.com.
Although the program is still in its early stages in the district, it has already made an impact on students, she noted.
“It’s a program that takes the place of lunch and recess, yet the kids cannot wait to see us each week,” she said. “That says something.”

year, we started in March. We had so much fun. On Saturday mornings, we would get together and sort and price. We just had a great time.”
Over the years, Fall Fest has grown significantly, she shared. It started out just in the chapel of the residence but has since moved into neighboring spaces.
“We’ve had to keep expanding,” she said. “There are items in the chapel. The rotunda has puzzles and children’s items and jewelry. Our rec room has been taken over by baked goods, and we had to move the food into the dining room.”
“This is our major fundraiser,” said resident Gloria Gordon, who added that Fall Fest will offer something for everyone. “The prices are great. Everything is priced to sell.” Fall Fest is a cash-only event. Free parking is available in a large lot at St. John’s Herr Estate.
Proceeds from Fall Fest are used for a variety of purposes, including to provide holiday gifts for staff and residents in personal care, as well as supporting St. John’s benevolent fund and local organizations such as Hands Across the Street, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Columbia Public Library and Bookmobile and children’s programs of Luthercare, the parent organization of St. John’s Herr Estate.
Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For some old-time fun for the whole family, head out to the 27th annual Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days. The event will be held at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge, on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22.
The festivities will kick off with breakfast served by the Conoy Lions Club beginning at 7 a.m. both days. Opening ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with an interdenominational church service held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Sunday.
A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held following opening ceremonies. Participants should bring their own bait and rod. A tractor parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.
With a theme of “Made in Pennsylvania,” both days will feature live entertainment from bluegrass bands, demonstrations, re-enactors, vendors and food.
A benefit auction will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
“We will have lots of variety,” said event volunteer Tonya Bernhard, describing the auction. “There are usually a lot of antiques, but we never really know what we’re going to have because it’s whatever people donate.” New this year, the event will offer an opportunity to win a variety of giveaway baskets, featuring gift cards to local businesses and attractions, personal care products, a “Taste of Lancaster County” basket and more.
Lots of old-fashioned activities and demonstrations will take place throughout the weekend, Tonya said.
“We’ll have both Civil War and Revolutionary War re-enactors. There will be somebody pressing cider. There’s a shingle mill, a sawmill and a blacksmith,” she commented. “We will have all kinds of hit and miss engines. They might be shelling corn or running water.”
As volunteer Ron Bernhard explained, hit and miss engines had their heyday in the late 1800s through
the 1930s. “The engines fire, and then they coast,” said Ron, who collects the equipment. “They are belt driven, and they were used all over farms.”
A kids’ zone will feature old-fashioned games organized by a local church, and additional kids’ activities will include barrel train rides, corn sandboxes and rides to a pumpkin patch to pick a pumpkin.
“We have a lot of craft vendors, and many of them have been coming back for years,” said volunteer Sandy Baker. “We have vendors who sell soap. We have a woman who makes embroidered items. We’ll have a Tastefully Simple vendor.”
Homemade food is also a highlight of the event, said volunteer Jolynn Bernhard.
“We have home-churned ice cream, apple dumplings, whoopie pies,” she shared. “We have lots of food stands.”
The Lions Club will host a new food stand featuring half-chickens, Ron said, with proceeds going to support future old-fashioned days. “All of the money we raise, through the auction and everything else, goes right back into the show so we can keep this going year after year,” Tonya remarked.
The Bernhards have been helping to organize the event for decades, and they said they look forward to it every year.
“It’s just rewarding to
see all the families there,” Ron stated. “Even if people don’t have much interest in the hit and miss engines, which is my thing, there are so many other things for them to see and do. We get so much positive feedback, so it’s rewarding that way.”
Jolynn noted that some families have been coming back year after year. “We have so many generations that come to this,” she said. “We’ll have a lot of three- and four-generation families.”
Ron encourages everyone to come out for at least one of the days, noting that admission and parking are free.
Added Tonya, “It’s a very family-oriented event. People will show you how things were done back then. If you’re watching a
