Annual fundraiser will support Columbia Animal Shelter
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Columbia Animal Shelter hosts its annual Art and Wine Heist, people can expect a festive evening, said Tammy L. Jalbert, executive director of the shelter.
“If you would like to come out and enjoy a fun-filled evening with many types of art, food, fun and entertainment by Duane Slaymaker, then this will be a great night supporting a fabulous cause,” she said.
The Food and Wine Heist will be held at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville, on Friday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m.
It’s the seventh year for the fundraiser, which features a silent auction of artwork from local and national artists, along with a wine pull.
“We are thrilled to have so
many talented artists donate their works of art,” Jalbert said. “All media is welcome, and although we are a shelter, it is not a requirement for animals to be the subject.”
For the second year, the event will also feature a live auction portion. “The live auction, with Jack Gamby as our auctioneer, will feature items for live bid, including a weeklong stay in beautiful Key West, (trips to) Joshua Tree (and) Tuscany, a Polar Express train experience, a Lloyd Mifflin print, Crossgates golf for four with lunch, just to name a few,” Jalbert shared. “It really is an exciting addition to the event.”
For the wine pull portion of the evening, participants pay a set price and then draw for a bottle of wine that could be worth up to $200. “People really get excited
about what their unseen bottle is worth,” Jalbert commented.
Money raised by the Art and Wine Heist will support the work and mission of Columbia Animal Shelter. “All proceeds from this event will go towards the rising costs for medication, veterinary equipment, food and other essential supplies, to continue our work and expand affordable veterinary care,” Jalbert explained. The shelter, located at 265 S. 10th St., Columbia, houses cats and dogs waiting for forever homes; offers low-cost spay, neuter and wellness services; and provides education outreach programs to the region.

EPC will
celebrate 70th anniversary with community event
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy, and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC).
As EPC celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at its facility at 1100 Corporate Blvd. in Lancaster.
Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Auntie Anne’s, Cupcakes by Casey, Tri-County Barbecue and Homage. Guests may enjoy

Capital Day Celebration slated
LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will hold its first-ever Capital Day Celebration on Friday, Sept. 27, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Capital Day is a yearly reminder of Lancaster’s importance during the American Revolution. For one day, on Sept. 27, 1777, Lancaster served as the capital of the United States. British troops had occupied Philadelphia on Sept. 26, forcing the Continental Congress to flee westward to escape capture and execution. The Continental Congress stopped in Lancaster, resting for an evening before continuing on the next day to York. Lancaster continued to be an important munitions center during the revolution and, from 1799 to 1812, served as the capital of Pennsylvania before the center of government was moved to Harrisburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for music by Vivace Live Strings and a performance of “The Capital Day Song” by Leo DiSanto. Adam Zurn of Uncharted Lancaster will present “On This Day in History: Five-Minute History” at 6:40 p.m. LancasterQuiztory, a Lancaster County-themed trivia game featuring prizes, will be played
from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.
Activities available throughout the event will include an all-ages indoor/ outdoor scavenger hunt, LancasterHistory museum exhibit access, a kids’ station, and yard games. Fallthemed food and beverages will also be available, including the opportunity to make s’mores at outdoor firepits. All attendees will receive a complimentary coupon to redeem at FoxDuck’s West King Street location for a free Capital Day poster for a limited time.
Those interested in participating in LancasterQuiztory may sign up on-site at the celebration before 6:30 p.m. Individuals and groups of up to six persons may participate as a team. For those not interested in joining for trivia, all other activities will continue during that time.
Tickets include food, drinks, entertainment, and activities. Proceeds will benefit the education and public programs of LancasterHistory. Advance registration is recommended, and any remaining tickets will be available at the door. To purchase tickets, visit www.lancasterhistory.org or call 717-392-4633. Fall Fest
is helping to organize the event.
“We have it set up in departments,” she said. “We have jewelry. We have baked goods. We line up paintings along the walls in the second-floor hallway. We have items for the kitchen, decorative items, puzzles, seasonal items, electronics, linens. We have oodles and oodles of books, CDs, DVDs and other mixed media.”
As resident Mary Miller stated, “You could almost decorate your entire apartment with everything you find here.”
New this year, visitors to Fall Fest will have the opportunity to win a handmade quilt as well.
Along with yard sale items, Fall Fest will feature a variety of food. Baked goods prepared by residents will be for sale, as well as hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages. Chicken corn soup, prepared by the St. John’s Herr Estate chef, will be available by the bowl or quart.
“People can take their food to go, or they can sit in our dining room and eat here,” Livingston said. Fall Fest has been held at St. John’s for more than 20 years. Items for sale are donated by residents and their families, and a group of people helps to sort and price everything.
“Originally, we started sorting and pricing a few weeks before Fall Fest,” Livingston said. “Last year, we started in April. This

year, we started in March. We had so much fun. On Saturday mornings, we would get together and sort and price. We just had a great time.”
Over the years, Fall Fest has grown significantly, she shared. It started out just in the chapel of the residence but has since moved into neighboring spaces.
“We’ve had to keep expanding,” she said. “There are items in the chapel. The rotunda has puzzles and children’s items and jewelry. Our rec room has been taken over by baked goods, and we had to move the food into the dining room.”
Proceeds from Fall Fest are used for a variety of purposes, including to provide holiday gifts for staff and residents in personal care, as well as supporting St. John’s benevolent fund and local organizations such as Hands Across the Street, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Columbia Public Library and Bookmobile and children’s programs of Luthercare, the parent organization of St. John’s Herr Estate.
“This is our major fundraiser,” said resident Gloria Gordon, who added that Fall Fest will offer something for everyone. “The prices are great. Everything is priced to sell.”

complimentary ice cream from Kreider Farms while supplies last.
Live entertainment will be provided by Blessing & Fowler from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Comprising musicians Zach Blessing and Nate Fowler, the duo performs soulful tunes and classic hits throughout central Pennsylvania. The event will also feature a live broadcast from WJTL from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and local mascots Johnny from Achenbach’s Pastries and Cylo from the Lancaster Stormers will make an appearance.
The open house will feature a variety of yard games and activities for children, including face painting and balloon twisting, and Cherry Hill Orchards will provide pumpkins for kids to decorate.
Guests may participate in several prize drawings during the open house, and prizes will include items and experiences donated by local businesses such as an espresso machine from Martin Appliances and a zip lining experience from Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. The prize drawing will also feature tickets to local attractions such as American Music Theatre, Field of Screams, Decades and Go ‘N Bananas.
Attendees will have an opportunity to look behind the scenes at EPC during a self-guided tour of the plant, which will offer a close-up look at each department and how the company’s publications, including weekly newspapers, are made.
Multiple community organizations and local first responders will be present at the open house, including a firetruck from West Hempfield Fire & Rescue, an officer from East Hempfield Township Police Department and the Lancaster County 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Club. Representatives from local chambers of commerce serving Lancaster, including the Lancaster Chamber, the Mount Joy Area Chamber, the Southern Lancaster County Chamber and Northern Lancaster County Chamber, will also be in attendance.
“In the third generation of this company, it’s important for us to continue the legacy of what was started,” said Jocelyn Engle, EPC’s publisher. “It’s all about supporting local organizations and understanding what serves our communities in each area.”

Railroad Museum slates Garden Railways
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Railfans and trainspotters show their love for locomotives in a variety of ways; some individuals enjoy traveling far and wide to see unique train cars with their own eyes, and others enjoy taking a local subway for the ride instead of the destination. One of the most popular pastimes among train connoisseurs is the assembly of miniature railroads, but these intricate displays are not confined to the safety of the indoors.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will hold its 17th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will feature a selfguided tour of five stops located throughout Lancaster, including displays in Lititz and Manheim as well as a stop in Wrightsville. Each stop will highlight an elaborate, outdoor display
of operating model trains in the homeowner’s yard or garden. A list of the gardens’ addresses will be available after a ticket is purchased to allow individuals to plan their route in advance. A volunteer from the museum will also be stationed at each home to share information about the museum’s programs and displays, and participating homeowners will be present to run their trains and to answer questions.
“Some homeowners incorporate water features or landscaping into their models. One of the most interesting layouts this year moves through the natural habitat of the owner’s backyard,” said Railroad Museum program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “What we are always trying to do is highlight all the work people have put into developing these beautiful layouts. This hobby requires a lot of work.”
One might consider outdoor model railroading to be the extreme sport of the hobby. Individuals who design outdoor layouts not only need to navigate the landscape of their yards or gardens, but they also must consider elements of nature when building the model. Factors such as heavy rain,
strong wind and curious local wildlife pose a threat to outdoor train models that indoor displays are protected from.
In the past, several local retirement communities have participated in the Garden Railways Tour. Myers said many model owners adapt their layouts to a new home after moving, which requires them to get creative with how they arrange the display. “It’s always neat to see people using the spaces they’re
allotted at home,” Myers added. “Even if their living situation has changed, they don’t have to give up hobbies and pursuits they enjoyed in the past.”
A limited number of tickets are available to purchase in the gift shop of the Railroad Museum, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. Tickets will also remain available online until the start of the event. For more information or to purchase a ticket, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.
GMTRC posts annual horse show
Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) will host its 44th annual horse show on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. The free event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature horses along with students with special needs, who will demonstrate horsemanship skills they have worked on all year.
Since 1981, GMTRC, a nonprofit organization, has been teaching children and adults with special needs how to ride and work with horses.
Students may experience a variety of therapeutic benefits from their work with the horses, including improved strength, balance, coordination,
communication skills, processing, self-esteem, and life skills for independence. During the annual show, all students will be recognized for the skills they have mastered.
At this year’s event, GMTRC will also unveil the Libby Craver Legacy Scholarship, created by Craver’s family to honor her more than 20 years of volunteer service with GMTRC. Craver passed away last year, but she is remembered for her dedication to GMTRC, where she served as a volunteer coordinator, the head instructor, and the board president.
Food and refreshments will be available for purchase, as well as GMTRC gear, including T-shirts and swag. All proceeds will support GMTRC’s programs.
