Fill up at the MAC and Cheese Fest

How does an evening spent enjoying comfort food sound to you? What if that comfort food came in the form of macaroni and cheese, and you’d be helping the community while filling your tummy?

The third annual MAC and Cheese Fest will be held at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, on Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 6 p.m. Admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis with people paying at the door.

“Columbia’s MAC and Cheese Fest will have up to 14 samples of mac and cheese from local restaurants. Who has the cheesiest mac and cheese, most original or is it just like Mom’s? We’ll

find out, and you get to select our winners,” explained Daisy Pagan, vice president and event coordinator for the Merchants Association of Columbia (MAC), which is hosting the event. “All samples will be blind tasted, meaning no names will be given, only numbered samples. Winners and restaurant numbers will be announced when the event is over.”

After heading through a buffet line and filling up a tray with samples from each of the restaurants, people will complete a scorecard noting their favorites.

Beverages will be available for a separate purchase.

Winners will be selected in various categories, with the top winner named “The Big Cheese” and earning a cheese trophy. Last

year, Parma Pizza & Grill took top honors, with The Golden Whisk Bakery winning the top prize the year before.

The event is a fundraiser for MAC, an organization that promotes businesses in Columbia and hosts community events, including Fourth Friday festivities.

“Most of our Fourth Friday events are free to our merchant members,” Pagan said, noting that most Fourth Fridays feature food and drinks plus entertainment.

“This fundraiser offsets those fees of chocolate, bands and wine samples. We also give the restaurants a stipend as well as foil pans to offset the price to make the mac and cheese.”

The MAC and Cheese Fest has proven to be very popular, Pagan

Thousands of books will highlight Kreutz Creek Library sale

When people come to the Kreutz Creek Library’s book sale, they are always pleasantly surprised, said Brent Peterman, president of the Friends of Kreutz Creek Library.

“Our sale stands out due to the sheer size and organization,” he shared. “New sale attendees often comment on the great job our book sorters have done at organizing and labeling the 36 categories of items we have available.”

Going the distance

How did you spend your summer vacation? If you’re Josh Curry, a senior at Lancaster County Career & Technology Center, you took a bike ride. A very long, very challenging bike ride.

Josh, who is the son of Anita Curry of Lititz, participated in the Adirondack Boys Summer Challenge Ride with Lifecycles, an organization that promotes character building and faith development through bicycling. For a week in late July and early August, Josh rode more than

350 miles from Pennsylvania to Whiteface Mountain at the north end of the Adirondack Mountains.

“Some of the highlights were the beautiful scenery in upstate New York, the amazing food and great fellowship and discipleship,” he said.

Challenge Ride is an accurate name for the trip, he stated, adding, “Some of the challenges were days with a lot of climbing.” The route included traveling along the Susquehanna River to its source at Cooperstown, N.Y., across the Erie Canal and into the mountains, finishing with a ride

In fact, the sale is so big, it won’t fit in the library. Instead, it is held in the five large garage bays where Hellam Township usually stores and repairs road maintenance equipment.

“The sale is way too large to fit into a library side room or basement,” Peterman explained, expressing thanks to the township for allowing the Friends to use the space. “We have a huge space in the Hellam Township municipal garage to spread out over 22,000 items for our customers to comfortably explore.”

The book sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. It will be held at 45 Walnut Springs Road, York, across the road from the Kreutz Creek Library.

Capital Blue Cross is supporting several 2024 educational programs by distributing nearly $1 million in 80 Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Live Healthy school grants across central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley so far this year.

EITC grants use state business-tax credits to fund scholarships and enrich educational opportunities through donations to innovative programs. Live Healthy grants support innovative school programs that strive to increase physical activity, enhance nutrition and encourage healthier life habits.

Capital’s generosity has helped fund schools, summer camps and innovative learning initiatives benefiting thousands of children.

Among the local programs Capital’s support is making possible this year is the Salvation Army Harrisburg Summer Youth Enrichment, which received an EITC grant. During the program, more than 100 children enjoyed an activity-packed, affordable 2024 summer camp complete with literacy lessons, sessions on character and emotional development, nutrition and cooking classes, career exploration and more.

A Live Healthy grant was awarded to the Tiger Tranquility Den in the Fleetwood Area School District, Berks County. The tranquility den creates a serene school space for students to relax and recharge so they can improve mental focus,

reduce stress and enhance their mental well-being.

Another EITC grant was awarded to the Mobile Agriculture Education Science Lab - Dauphin County. With many student generations removed from farm life, the mobile lab uses innovative methods to bridge the agricultural knowledge gap, including interactive experiments to help students across Pennsylvania connect with agriculture and explore its career opportunities.

An EITC grant was awarded to Junior Achievement BizTown - York County. In this program, fifth- and sixth-graders were able to experience business aspects of administrating a town via a simulated workday that included interactive roles such as running a bank, managing a restaurant, voting for mayor and more.

“Lifecycles offers a Christ-centered outdoor adventure that fosters growth, character and leadership in teens through biking and teamwork,” Al said. “Teens learn essential life skills - from leadership and teamwork to money management and healthy living - all under the guidance of dedicated mentors who help them transition into adulthood with integrity and confidence.”

Author to speak about clockmaker

Historic Rock Ford will host a presentation by Bob Frishman, author of “Edward Duffield: Philadelphia Clockmaker, Citizen, Gentleman, 17301803,” on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. The program will be held in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster.

Frishman will present a historical overview of Edward Duffield, who was far more than a clockmaker in 18th-century Philadelphia. Duffield made, repaired, and sold floor-standing clocks, surveying instruments, and sundials that today are in museums and private collections, and he was also a wealthy property owner and active civic and Anglican Church leader. He was also a lifelong friend of Benjamin Franklin and served as executor of Franklin’s estate. Frishman’s presentation will be supplemented with more than 100 images from his newly released comprehensive biography of Duffield, which addresses all aspects of the clockmaker’s life and the practice of clockmaking in Colonial America.

After his presentation, Frishman will have a question-and-answer session
