Lending a hand at the Columbia Dream Center
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Inside Columbia Presbyterian Church at the corner of Fourth and Locust streets, dreams are becoming reality. The Columbia Dream Center staff members and volunteers are working hard to provide opportunities for people in need through a variety of programs, and their efforts are flourishing.
“We have jammed a lot of stuff into this church,” explained Jenn Hollinger, outreach coordinator for the center. “We used to have a separate building for our shelter, but now everything we do is under this roof. We do not have one square inch of extra space.”
The Columbia Dream Center hosts a food pantry, provides shelter space for men and women, serves free lunch on weekdays, operates a resource center and houses a clothing bank.
As Hollinger explained, the center moved its shelter into
the church in April of 2023. The move cut the shelter’s size in half, and the space can now only accommodate 16 adults.
“Columbia has the secondhighest homeless rate in the county,” Hollinger said. “Lancaster city is first, and then here. It’s a dream to be able to do a family shelter, because there is a great need here, and we are looking for a shelter building. It just hasn’t manifested itself yet.”
On the other side of a divider from the shelter, volunteers set up the food pantry for guests to use once a week, either on Tuesday evenings or Wednesday mornings. People complete a self-declaration of need and do not need to live in Columbia to use the pantry.
“They come through the line and pick up what they need,” Hollinger said, noting that items vary depending on what she can get from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Blessings of Hope and
local businesses that donate items. In a typical month, the pantry serves close to 900 families.
Mondays through Fridays, the Columbia Dream Center provides lunch for area residents through a soup kitchen that features a hot meal four of the days and a bag lunch on Wednesdays. “Our soup kitchen numbers continue to grow,” Hollinger shared. “We did over 4,000 lunches last month.”
The Columbia Dream Center used to operate as Hands Across the Street but rebranded once it became an affiliate of the original Dream Center program based in Los Angeles. It now operates as a ministry of Columbia Presbyterian Church.
In the church sanctuary, the Dream Center operates the Restart Day Center, offering access to computers and help with finding resources such as housing or jobs. Downstairs in the building, a clothing bank provides free items to men, women and children.
Workcamp will offer free home repairs
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you need home repairs, but your budget is tight, help is here.
The Eastern York Workcamp Initiative provides free home repairs during a weeklong camp held in June. The program is currently accepting applications from homeowners looking for
help with work such as installing handicapped ramps, interior or exterior painting, weatherization and limited construction.
“This is an opportunity to get free help,” said Joe Bachman, director of the Eastern York Workcamp Initiative. “Group Workcamps has been working with low-income, disabled and

Walk through the doors of the Columbia Animal Shelter, and you’ll be met by purring, furry friends looking for their forever homes. You can help support the mission of the shelter by attending a gift card bingo event. It will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, at Hambones Social Club, 726 Manor St., Columbia. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and bingo will begin at 6:30 p.m.
“There will be 20 games of bingo and one jackpot at the end

Along with bingo games, the fundraiser will feature food for purchase. “We will have chicken corn noodle soup, chili and walking tacos, as well as drinks,” Jalbert shared.

Blues musician to visit PCA&D
The Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) Liberal Arts Department invites the public to “The Voice and Music of Daryl Davis” on Friday, Oct. 4. The program will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the atrium at PCA&D, 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The hourlong musical portion of the
program will start at 6 p.m. During the program, which is a part of the Diverse Voices Speaker Series, Davis will speak about his work to achieve racial harmony and share his blues piano playing and singing.
Davis will share the life experiences that led to his 1998 book “Klan-destine
Relationships: A Black Man’s Odyssey” and the documentary film screenplay “Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America.” He will speak about the power of conversation to ignite positive change, understanding hate groups in America, and how music broke down racial barriers in the 1950s and 1980s.
Davis, whose parents were in the United States Foreign Service, traveled extensively as a child. At 10, when the family moved to Massachusetts, he encountered racism firsthand. As an adult, Davis sought to explore the phenomenon of racism by interviewing Ku Klux Klan members, some of whom became his close friends and left the Klan. Many Klan members were initially drawn to Davis because they enjoyed his music.
Davis’ awards include the Elliott-Black Award from the American Ethical Union and the Bridge Builder Award from the Washington Ethical Society.
He is also an international performer, songwriter,
vocalist, pianist, and guitar player with a bachelor’s degree in music from Howard University. Mentored by Pinetop Perkins and Johnnie Johnson, he mastered the boogie-woogie piano blues in the Delta and Chicago styles. Today he mentors young musicians through the artist in residence program at the Strathmore Institute in Bethesda, Md. He was named Best Traditional Blues/R&B Instrumentalist at the 2009 Washington Area Music Awards.
Davis has performed with Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Legendary Blues Band - formerly the Muddy Waters Blues Band - and many others, and he has released several albums. He owns Lyrad Music, a music publishing and licensing business; has a podcast called “Changing Minds”; and has had stage, film, and TV roles.
PCA&D, the Blues Society of Central PA (BSCP), Nola Blue record company, and numerous donors are community sponsors of this event.
Suicide prevention training set
A Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Training session, aimed at equipping individuals with suicide prevention skills, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Peter Catholic Church, 121 S. Second St., Columbia. The training will be provided by Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), and it is sponsored by the Columbia Catholic Mental Health Ministry. It is open to people of all faiths. Space is limited to 35 participants, so early registration is encouraged. The training is free, although a suggested donation is requested to help cover materials. For more information or to register, contact deacon Jim Doyle at ccmental healthministry@gmail.com or 717-343-1102 or contact MHALC at 717-397-7461. Online registration is available at https://tinyurl.com/ QPRTrainingColumbia2024.
QPR is an emergency response technique designed to help people act as gatekeepers in suicide prevention. A gatekeeper is someone who is in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. QPR teaches participants how to recognize the warning signs of suicide, engage with those at risk, and refer them to appropriate resources for help.
Columbia Catholic Mental Health Ministry, a joint effort by St. Peter and Holy Trinity parishes, aims to provide spiritual support and community for people experiencing mental health challenges and their families. While not a substitute for mental health treatment, the ministry offers supplemental assistance and information to help overcome stigma and misunderstandings about mental illness.
Bar Association wins award Young adults invited to The Harvest Happening
The York County Bar Association (YCBA) was honored with the 2024 National Association for Bar Professionals (NABE) LexisNexis Community and Educational Outreach Award for its collaborative efforts with the “Pardon Me” film screening and panel discussion that was held on Oct. 4, 2023, at the Capitol Theatre at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts. Victoria Connor, CEO of the York County Bar Association and York County Bar Foundation, accepted the award at the 2024 NABE annual meeting held on Aug. 1, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago.
The LexisNexis Community and Educational Outreach Awards honor outstanding Bar public service- and law-related education programs. The Pardon Project of York County (PPYC) - in collaboration with community partners including the York County Bar Association and York County Bar Foundation; The Program, “It’s About Change”; the York County District Attorney’s Office; the York County Clerk of Courts; the York County Economic Alliance; and the Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity - organized a screening of the documentary film “Pardon Me.” The screening concluded with a livestreamed panel discussion moderated by York County District Attorney David Sunday. Panelists included filmmaker Shuja Moore; the Hon. William R. Carpenter of the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas; pardon recipients David Bryant, Laurie Besden, and C. Reginald “Reggie” Johnson; and pardon fellow DaShawn Harrison. The screening was free and open to the public and marked the beginning of a statewide tour of showings and discussions across the Commonwealth.
Directed and produced by Moore, the documentary “Pardon Me” focuses on the transformative power of pardons, which not only provide individuals with the chance to lead fulfilling lives but also positively impact lower-income com-

munities. The film narrates the stories of two individuals navigating the pardon process in Pennsylvania, with one of them having already received a pardon. It also includes interviews with thought leaders such as Jeff Hornstein, head of the Economy League, and Brandon Flood, former secretary of the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons.
Criminal records often present significant barriers to employment, housing, education, and more. The only way to remove a conviction from one’s record is through a pardon from the governor, obtained via the Board of Pardons.
In Pennsylvania, there are currently 15 Pardon Projects, and the statewide initiative aims to double that number. After the York County event, representatives of three other counties expressed interest in starting Pardon Projects in their communities, and five attendees reached out to the York County Bar and The Program, “It’s About Change,” to get involved as pardon coaches, people who guide applicants through the pardon process. Several attendees contacted the Pardon Project to check their eligibility or to start the pardon process.
Thanks to contributions, the screening not only raised awareness but also secured $7,000 to benefit Do Moore Good, the charity founded by Shuja Moore to advance this work throughout the commonwealth.

Staff members at The Junction Center in Manheim host events that reflect the center’s motto of “Christ. Community. Music.,” but they felt something was missing. So they created The Harvest Happening, a free event geared toward young adults.
“This event is an attempt to specifically reach young adults to provide a safe, fun atmosphere for fellowship,” explained Kayla Cornell, box office manager. “Our heart behind reaching young adults is a desire to use our facility to positively impact the next generation and create relationship opportunities.”
The Harvest Happening will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, beginning at 5 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. It will feature a variety of ways for people to relax and have fun. “We will have food trucks, yard games, live music, pumpkin painting, free cotton candy, a fun photo op and an outdoor movie to end the night with popcorn and soda provided by us,” Cornell said. “It’s going to be a great night.”
Local artist Matt Wheeler will provide live music, while Gourmet
Julie’s Way and Hopeful Brews will serve food and beverages. Cotton candy will be provided by The Little Cotton Cart from 5 to 7 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and jackets to enjoy the movie, and Cornell hopes for a large turnout.
“This event is completely free,” she said. “We want to encourage anyone who wants to come and have a fun night of games, music, food and fellowship to come to The Harvest Happening. Once here, they can expect to have an incredible kickoff to the autumn season with other young adults seeking community.”
Cornell noted that in the weeks prior to the event, staff members handed out postcard invitations featuring the event’s logo.
“If someone comes to the event with one of the cards, we are using them as ‘tickets’ See Harvest pg 4

Geared toward prospective students in high school and their families, both events will include tours of the campus, interactions with faculty members and current students, lunch in Olewine Dining Commons, the opportunity to experience a chapel gathering in Good Shepherd Chapel, visits to classrooms and athletics
facilities, and more.
Students and families can also ask questions about topics such as LBC’s commitment to biblical integration in every program, Division III Chargers sports teams, short-term and semester study abroad programs, and student access to the Counseling & Care Center, academic mentoring, writing support, and accessibility services.

Dream Center
Preparing the church, which dates to the 1880s, to house the Dream Center required extensive renovations. “In the sanctuary, we pulled out all the church pews,” Hollinger said. “We pulled out the old red church carpet and put in new flooring. We brought in chairs to use for church.” Work is ongoing, with painting projects and kitchen updates on Hollinger’s wish list.
“Our kitchen is from the 1950s, but we make it work,” she said, noting that the center added a convection oven two years ago. “This kitchen was built for church dinners where you serve maybe 100 people. This summer alone, we were pumping out 300 to 400 lunches. We’d like to renovate it, but it’s an involved and expensive project. We were quoted $80,000 for just a new range hood.”

The Columbia Dream Center also serves as a Power Packs affiliate, providing free food to families in the Columbia Borough School District on a weekly basis.
The community can help to support the Columbia Dream Center with monetary donations or donations of items such as hygiene and cleaning products. Volunteers are also always needed.
Mostly, though, Hollinger wants to spread the word about what the Columbia Dream Center is doing to help the community.
“It’s surprising how many people live in Columbia and have no idea that we are here,” she said. “We could help them if they need help.”

shelter, which serves as a temporary home for cats and dogs. “All proceeds from this event will go towards the rising costs for medication, veterinary equipment, food and other essential supplies to continue our work and expand affordable veterinary care,” Jalbert commented. “We are always looking for ways that we can help offset the costs incurred at the shelter while having a good time and providing something of value to people who come out and support us through our events.”
Opened in 2019, the Columbia Animal Shelter was established in memory of Judy McKonly, a Columbia resident who dreamed of establishing the best shelter for cats in the country. After McKonly’s death, family members purchased a former fire hall
and repurposed the building to house the shelter. The shelter offers adoptions as well as a low-cost wellness clinic that provides spay and neuter services among other health services. The shelter also emphasizes education and provides programming and resources for new pet owners.
Jalbert hopes people will come out to the bingo, a new event for the shelter.
“People can expect to have a great time with door prizes, (giveaway) baskets, 20 games of bingo with an awesome jackpot,” she said. “We will have great food and drinks available to purchase. It promises to be an awesome evening.”

elderly residents since 1977. Locally this will be our third camp. We have many testimonies of the work that was done and the relationships that were built with the youth that came to our community to help us.”
Campers attend the program from across the country, spending a week in central Pennsylvania to complete repairs on homes within a 30-mile radius of Eastern York Middle School. It is preferred that applicants own their home, but it is not required if repairs are approved by the landlord.
“We are looking for a weeklong project,” Bachman explained. “Part of the objective of the camp is for the youth to grow in a relationship with a resident. This will only happen if they spend four to five days together. … Also considered is the type of work that needs done.” Because of the age and inexperience of the high-school-age campers, no landscaping or roof repairs are included in the work.
Bachman, who leads a youth group program in Hellam, shared that the camp’s goal is 250 campers, which would provide workers for 42 sites.
28, 2025. He noted that homeowners receive more than just home improvements.
“If you are fortunate enough to be selected to have your home repair completed, it will not just be about the repair of your home. It will be the relationships that you form during that week,” he remarked.
“When we get our postcamp surveys, it’s interesting that most people don’t list that they’re thankful for the work that was done - although they are. They are thankful that the kids spent a week with them, and they got to hear (the youths’) stories and they got to share theirs with the kids. The camp is always about relationships. Your love of community, your faith in the future of our young people and your restoration in humanity will be fulfilled.”
Applications will be received for the workcamp through Friday, Nov. 15. For more information, text Bachman at 717-424-1136. For details on the workcamp, visit https://groupcares.org/ group-mission-trips.

The movie showing is free and open to the community, but space is limited and online registration is required at www.casalanc leb.org.
CASA’s mission is to provide a qualified and compassionate court-appointed volunteer advocate to every child who is abused and neglected to ensure he or she has a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. To learn more, visit the aforementioned website.
Although some campers come from outside Pennsylvania, many are local students, he said. “We originally thought the youth would not want to do local work because they enjoyed the road trip,” Bachman said, referring to the option of going on a mission trip outside the youths’ hometown. “We found out that some of the most meaningful things the kids have done have been their local work. They can follow up and stay in contact with a resident by visiting them, and they also can drive by and see what they completed for years to come. If there’s any local youth groups that would want to get involved, I would highly recommend it. It’s the pinnacle of what we’ve done in our youth group. It is a life-changing event.”
Bachman encourages people who need home repairs to apply for the program, which will run from June 22 through
