Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will roll through town
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For 77 years, the annual Mardi Gras Halloween Parade has rolled through the streets of Columbia, entertaining spectators and raising spirits. This year’s parade will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24. It will step off at 7 p.m. from 10th and Manor streets in Columbia and will proceed along a 1.5-mile route that includes sections of Manor, South Fourth, Union, South Second, Locust and South Sixth streets.
The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, a men’s service organization. This year’s parade theme is “Food Fiesta,” and both
participants and spectators are encouraged to wear costumes reflecting the theme.
“This year’s parade is shaping up to be one of the biggest in years,” said John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer. “We already have more units registered than we did last year. It’s a great way for people to come together for an evening of fun with family and friends.”
The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The procession will include high school marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, Scout troops, fire companies, floats, walking groups, businesses and a steam calliope as the final entry. Several nonprofit organizations will sell
food along the parade route. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories, including baton groups, floats, walking groups and individuals. Grunden explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate entrants on their overall appearance and performance. This helps ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to offer, including elements that might have been missed if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area.
Jeff Groff, a lifelong resident of the Columbia area, will serve as grand marshal. He and his wife, Joan, will ride in a horse-drawn

When it comes to future success, one factor has a strong influence: grit. According to researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, grit is a more accurate predictor of success than IQ, physical health, social intelligence or attractiveness.
Members of the ColumbiaMiddletown Elks 1074 have been promoting the power of grit for decades through the Elks Hoop Shoot. The event, open to anyone between the ages of 8 and 13, will be held this year on Sunday, Nov. 3, in the gym at Park Elementary School, 50 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Doors

Collaboration brings pretzels and the library together
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Last school year, Kayla Wilkinson was working on a homeschool lesson about Pennsylvania with her sons when she had a lightbulb moment.
The board member of Columbia Public Library took her boys to Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, 219 E. Main St., Lititz, for a tour and thought perhaps the pretzel bakery and the
library could collaborate so more people could enjoy the hands-on tour.
She brought the idea to library director Heather Beury, who worked with Sturgis general manager Michelle Curtis and owner Tim Snyder to create a pass that can be checked out of the Columbia Library entitling up to four people to a free tour of the bakery.
“Michelle brought up the idea of the collaboration to me, and I

Haunted Marietta will feature spooky fun
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Haunted Marietta is back for another year, encouraging brave souls to experience some spine-tingling fun - if they dare!
This year’s event will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26, and will feature two attractions: a haunted house at the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., and a haunted corn maze and other activities behind Molly’s Courtyard Café, 17 E. Market St.
From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. both evenings, the haunted

house will offer a less-scary option for children, with no costumed actors. From 7 to 9 p.m. each night, the attraction will feature thrills and chills for adults throughout the interactive attraction. On Oct. 26, people are invited to join in a costume parade starting in the square in Marietta at 5 p.m. and walking down to the Union Meeting House for the children’s hour.
At Molly’s Courtyard Café, visitors can explore a corn maze and enjoy a variety of food trucks and vendors, said Ali Marquart, a board member of Marietta Restoration Associates, which organizes the event under creative director and Marietta resident Willis Boyles.
Boyles had created a Halloween attraction in his Marietta backyard for many years, inviting the community to attend free of charge. In 2019, Marietta Restoration Associates approached Boyles about collaborating on the event and moving it to the Union Meeting House, where it could take place no matter the weather. Boyles still handles all of the design and creativity for the haunted house, with new features added each year.
Marquart invites people of all ages to come to Haunted Marietta, noting that a small admission fee will be charged for each attraction. Donations will be accepted as well.
“People can expect a scary night ahead of them when entering either of the Haunted Marietta attractions,” Marquart said. “For those who are not a fan of getting scared, they can enjoy the vendors and food trucks for a family fun evening.”
Proceeds from the event
“Jeff’s dedication to serving the community runs deep,” said Paul Resch, president of the Lions Club. “Whether it’s driving two hours to help clear brush at the Lions Beacon Lodge Camp for blind and disabled children or pitching in here in town to put up American flags, pick up trash or support educational projects like The Edible Classroom, Jeff is always willing to lend a hand where there’s a need. The only thing that surpasses his long list of volunteer efforts is the generosity of his heart.”
Groff has volunteered with numerous organizations, including the former Columbia Jaycees, which sponsored the parade for many years. He serves as president of the Columbia Park Rangers, a volunteer group he helped found more than 20 years ago. He also assists with repair work at Mount Bethel Cemetery, serves with the Columbia
Shade Tree Commission and volunteers with projects at Glatfelter Memorial Field. Outside of Columbia, he has helped Lancaster Conservancy and Penn State Extension with tree planting, maintenance and invasive species clearing and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, among other organizations.
“It has been wonderful to be a part of Columbia organizations for several decades and stay involved with the parade throughout,” Groff said. “I’ve also been given the opportunity to participate in many projects and experiences while meeting people along with enhancing and sharing my skill set while contributing to a better world.”
For more information on the parade or to register, call John or Cheryl Grunden at 717-305-8348 or email parade@columbialions .org. Online registration is available at https://colum bialions.org.

Create Columbia posts Halloween events
Create Columbia will hold events showcasing the fun and artistry of Halloween.
The historic Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, will be the site of a themed masked dance from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. Guests are encouraged, but not required, to wear costumes and masks inspired by attire worn in the 1920s as a nod to the event theme of the Roaring ‘20s. Live music, hors d’oeuvres, and beverages will be part of the festivities. Tickets may be prepurchased by calling Kay Leader at 717-449-0231.
A limited number of tickets may be available at the door. Those who have not prepurchased tickets are advised to call to inquire about the availability of remaining tickets. This year’s venue offers parking and greater access.
The Halloween House Tour will return for a fourth year on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2 to 7 p.m. The Masquerade, which debuted in 2023, will return for a repeat performance.
Guests are welcome to visit the participating venues at their own pace and in any order. The seven locations include private homes and nonresidential properties. While some venues may be familiar, each stop will offer something different from what participants may have seen on previous tours.
Visitors to the historic Columbia Market House, built in 1869, can make their way to the basement to see the dungeon, which was originally used as storage space by farmers. When the local jail filled up, the extra prisoners were taken to the dungeon.
Also included in the tour is the home and business of Christopher Prestia. Purchased in a derelict state, the property has undergone the first stages of restoration work. It features remaining areas of bare 150-year-old plaster and subfloor, unrestored woodwork, and a collection of antique organs and clocks.
The home of Gary and Denise Brubaker features old, new, antique, and

vintage decorations. The collection, started more than 25 years ago, includes papier-mâché pumpkins, cats, and ‘50s plastic items.
Tourgoers may stop for a rest at the Columbia Town Square, a small public park that was designed and built more than 20 years ago by Columbia Town Gardeners, which is a reactivated committee of Create Columbia.
The committee is partnering with Columbia Borough and the Parks and Recreation Committee to refresh the landscape design and replant tulip bulbs that were planted in memory of the lives lost on 9/11.
Mini tours will be offered at Mount Bethel Cemetery, where people can see notable markers and mausoleums.
The other stops will be St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, which was founded in 1851, and Columbia Curiosities, an antiques and oddities shop featuring a vintage Halloween selection.
Admission tickets will be available at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. and again on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon. They may also be purchased on the day of the tour at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., or at the historic Columbia Market House from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Purchases may be made via cash or check or, for an additional fee, by credit card.
The events are made possible through sponsorships by B&T Sportswear, Foresters of America 235, Columbia Loyal Order of the Moose, Columbia-Middletown Elks Lodge 1074, Columbia Lions Club, and Sunsnappers. For more information on the events, visit www.facebook.com/ createcolumbia.

Cooking with the Seasons: Autumn Harvest Meal will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Attendees will be guided through the preparation of a fourcourse, plant-based meal featuring local, fresh, and in-season produce. The planned menu includes a kale salad topped with fall fruit, mashed potatoes and a root vegetable roast, stuffed squash, and cookies. The menu is subject to change based on produce availability. Each aspiring
chef will make enough for two meals, which they can enjoy at the end of class or take home.
Participants should contact the Horn Farm at the aforementioned number or email address or the instructor at preservinghome@hotmail .com at least four days in advance to disclose any food allergies or dietary restrictions.
Roots & Drupes: MidFall Foraging Walk will take place on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will look for late-season flowers and fruits, as well as roots and twigs, that can be used for a variety of purposes, including food and medicine. Foragers of any level of experience, including beginners, are welcome.
Rummage sale and more posted

Evolve Life Group marks one year
The Evolve Life Group from Wrightsville, Hellam, and surrounding areas, recently celebrated its oneyear anniversary. The group was formed in September 2023 by Joe Bachman for individuals age 45 and up to bring the community together. The faith-based group focuses on supporting oneself, others, and community. Members gather for a monthly dinner at a local restaurant and hold a meeting on the last Sunday of each month.
In its first year of existence, the group participated in various community service projects. These initiatives included traveling to Unto to assist in sorting and preparing clothing donations to be shipped to developing countries, staining a ramp deck in conjunction with Servants Inc., Christmas caroling at local nursing homes, baking and distributing cookies to local fire
will open at 11:30 a.m., and the contest will begin at 12:30 p.m.
“The Hoop Shoot started in 1946 at national level,” said Valerie Kissinger, chair of the local event.
“At first, it was just boys, but in ’74, they allowed girls to enter.” Over the years, Columbia’s event has drawn strong participation, but that dwindled a bit since COVID, so organizers are hoping to build the event back up to its pre-pandemic level.
is just one way the Elks give back to the community, said volunteer Robin Gamby.
“We do a lot of things for the community,” she said, noting that the organization participates in National Night Out and hosts a Flag Day event. “We want to make an impact, and the Hoop Shoot is a way for us to reach out to kids in the community.”
companies, and writing letters to active-duty members of the military.
The group also enjoyed many activities such as a trivia night, an escape room, a Nostalgia Night celebration of the ‘60s through the ‘80s, and a private boat tour on the Susquehanna River aboard the Chief Uncas.
Also, the group will hold an event reminiscent of “The Amazing Race” on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 3 to 6 p.m. This activity is open to the community.
The Evolve Life Group seeks to continue growing in its second year, so it can impact the surrounding communities and lend a hand to individuals and organizations throughout York and Lancaster counties.
For more information, call Joe Bachman at 717-424-1136, email evolve92023@gmail.com or visit https://tinyurl .com/EvolveLifeGroup.
For the free-throw competition, children are divided into three age groups and separated by gender. Each participant may take warm-up shots and then will attempt to make as many baskets as possible in 25 shots.
Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place finishers, and the top scorer in each division will move on to a district competition in January 2025.
“From there, winners will go to the state competition in March and then on to the regional competition and to the finals, which will be held in April in Chicago,” Kissinger said. “In the past, we have had people move on to states, but we haven’t had anyone go to nationals. We’d love to see that happen.”
At the national event, six finalists are crowned national champions, and their names are displayed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
The Hoop Shoot is part of the organization’s charitable arm, the Elks National Foundation (ENF). The ENF strives to build stronger communities through programs that support youths, serve veterans and meet local needs.
For more information on the Hoop Shoot, visit https://tinyurl.com/4v jut2wb, call 717-575-9032 or email bpoe1074@com cast.net. Participants who register by Friday, Oct. 25, will be entered in a drawing for Dick’s Sporting Goods gift cards. Preregistration is encouraged for the event, but it is not required.
Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) will offer its Haunted Heritage Bucket List through Saturday, Nov. 30. People of all ages may take part in any of 13 tasks that celebrate the season at local businesses, events, and landmarks. Tasks include both spooky activities focused on folklore and more and harvest-themed activities such as an autumn
The Hoop Shoot is open to anyone in the age range from any area, and participants do not have to be members of a basketball team to participate. Members of the Columbia High School basketball team will volunteer at the event, helping with rebounds and serving as role models for the younger kids, Kissinger said.
The mission of the event is to have fun but also to help students set a goal, she explained.
“I think a competition like this is good for kids because it’s something they can practice and strive for,” she shared. “They start building that grit and determination, and that helps them throughout their life.”

thought, ‘I go to the library all the time,’” Snyder said. “It’s a good idea.”
The Columbia library introduced the pass in September, and it will be available to check out from the day after Labor Day through the day before Memorial Day each year. It’s valid for up to four admissions and although it is housed in Columbia, it may be checked out for one week through any branch by anyone with a valid Lancaster County library card.
“The pass gives them a 25-minute historic tour and a pretzel twisting exercise,” Curtis said, explaining that the Sturgis bakery dates to 1861 and is the oldest commercial pretzel bakery in the country. “They get to hear the history of Julius and how he started the bakery. They get to twist a pretzel and learn the significance of the shape and the meaning behind it. They also get to learn all of the traditional processes we use.”
The pass is the first collaboration of its kind between the bakery and a local library, Curtis shared. “I thought it was a great way to get people from the other side of the county over here,” she said. “It’s great to have them here to visit us.”
Beury is excited about people taking advantage of the pass. “It’s important to get people to explore their communities but also to offer an affordable option with those partnerships for people to be able to get out and do things together,” she commented. “It’s really a community partnership. We want to encourage people to get
out and see what is in their community.”
The Columbia library has a similar partnership with the National Watch and Clock Museum, and both that pass and the pretzel pass are unique to the Columbia branch. The library also participates in museum pass programs for other locations throughout Lancaster County that are shared among other library branches.
Beury said the pass fits nicely with the mission of the library, which is to serve as a public resource.
“We launched STEM kits in the last year, manipulative kits in the last year,” she remarked. “We are underway with Millersville University to launch digital literacy classes. We’re a hub for the community. We’re not just books anymore.”
She hopes the library’s community partnerships will continue to grow. “Our goal is always, ‘How can we do it better for the community?’” she said. “How can we serve the community better?”
Curtis encourages people to come to Sturgis for the tour, whether they visited as children and are coming back as adults or it’s their first time to the bakery.
“Bring your kids; get hands-on experience with history,” she said, noting that tourgoers receive a pretzel sample to snack on at the end of the tour. “And who doesn’t love pretzels?”
The pass requires a scheduled tour time and there are restrictions on its use, which are included in information distributed with the pass. For more information, visit https:// columbiapubliclibrary.org.
