Celebrate July Fourth with Marietta Fireworks
BY CATHY MOLITORISMarietta Fireworks will present its annual display on Thursday, July 4, but for Gary Schatz and other volunteers, the show is a year-round endeavor.
“I pay attention to what other people do and look around to see what’s available,” Schatz said. “I see our supplier on and off all year, and we toss ideas around. I look at it like, ‘Can I do that? What does it take to do that?’”
The fireworks will be shot off from Donegal Intermediate School on River Road in Marietta beginning at 9:15 p.m. or when conditions permit, and this year’s show promises to be as impressive as ever, Schatz commented.
“We’re going to be about half
an hour again this year,” he said, noting that about 70% of the show is programmed electronically, while 30% is shot off manually.
“We try to be entertaining to anybody that’s out in kayaks or boats watching, in town watching or anybody that’s east, west, north or south of us.”
Several things make Marietta Fireworks unique, he said, including the organization’s nonprofit status, its long history
in the community - dating back to the late 1950s - and the nature of the show. He noted that the show includes a variety of fireworks, effects and a meticulously planned design.
“We also do something rare for a local show. We do what’s called a 360 show,” he added. “We try to be entertaining to anybody that’s out in kayaks or boats watching, in town watching or anybody that’s east, west, north or south of us.”
Two great spots to watch the show in Marietta are War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St., and Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road. The church will host a family-friendly event beginning at 4 p.m., featuring close to 20 food trucks, live music from Common Vine from

BY CATHY MOLITORISLooking at the exterior of the Mount Joy VFW, Sarah Hamm realized something.
“There was nothing terrible about it, but it could use a little bit of love,” said the 2023 Donegal High School graduate and longtime Girl Scout.
Inspired to get creative, Sarah focused on sprucing up the building, located at
125 Longenecker Road, and she earned her Girl Scout Gold Award as a result.
For her project, Sarah planted flowers and completed other landscaping. She also put her art skills to work creating an original mural on the side of the building.
“I went to a few meetings at the VFW,” Sarah said, noting that her father and grandfather are both VFW members. “One of

with Twisted Bine Beer Co. in Mount Joy to host the event, which will feature water competitions for dogs in a pool set up in the parking lot of Fellowship Baptist Church. Food trucks, including Spud Muffin and Cupcakes by Casey, will be on hand, and the Mount Joy American Legion will sell food and drinks as well. Twisted Bine will operate a beer garden for people age 21 and older, and vendors will be set up selling items or spotlighting their services. A variety of giveaways will also be held.
Proceeds from the event will benefit people at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Keystone DockDogs is a local affiliate of DockDogs, an international canine aquatics competition
organization. The local club formed in 2005 and has about 100 members, said Travis Reish, club president.
“Our whole goal is to get families and dogs active,” he said. “Dogs need something to do, especially breeds that are working dogs. Keystone DockDogs helps provide a very active sport and lets the dogs tap into what they’ve been bred to do.”
The organization hosts practices across central Pennsylvania, and members participate in events throughout the region. Events take place in various bodies of water, from lakes to portable pools, and feature three disciplines, Travis said, explaining that each is similar to a trackand-field event.
“Big Air” compares to a long jump, with dogs competing for the farthest jump off the dock. “Extreme Vertical” is the sport’s high jump, and “Speed Retrieve” is like a 100-meter dash, with dogs timed as they rush to retrieve a toy in the water.

wife, April, enjoy the sport for a variety of reasons.
“It’s great to get out with the dogs, get outside and get active,” Travis said. “It’s also a great opportunity to help the bond between humans and their dogs.”
He’s excited to bring Tails and Ales to Mount Joy because he believes in the benefit of family-friendly community events.
“Lots of families have dogs, and they are looking for things to do as a family,” he said. “It’s going to be a really fun weekend and a great way to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend. There will be amazing food, fun competitions and lots to see.”
There is a per-day fee for the event, with a discount for a weekend pass. For more information on Keystone DockDogs, visit www .keystonedockdogs.com.

Putting on the fireworks display is a labor of love for Schatz, who started creating fireworks displays with the Marietta Jaycees in the 1980s.
“It’s in my blood. It’s my passion,” he said. “I really enjoy the design, trying to get an idea of what to put together.”
Marietta Fireworks operates with an all-volunteer committee, and Schatz noted that community support makes the event possible. Putting on an extensive fireworks display is an expensive endeavor.
“We get a lot of support from the clubs, organizations and businesses around town,” he said.
“I think the people in Marietta have every bit as much passion for this as what we do. We have a lot of donors, including individuals, who support us. We always hear, ‘You’re the best fireworks around.’ You try not to let that go to your head.”

the members of the women’s auxiliary took me aside and said, ‘There’s nothing on this wall. It would be nice to have something here.’”
A member of the National Art Honor Society when she attended Donegal, Sarah knew she could put her art skills to use in her Gold Award project.
“I came up with two main ideas for the mural and designed them on my computer,” she said. “I gave the board members the options, and they were very interested in the one that was a little more complicated than the other. It pushed me out of my comfort zone to do it, but I’m really glad that’s what they picked.”
The mural depicts silhouettes of soldiers with a sunset and a poppy field in the background. “In high school, I was in choir all four years, and the song ‘In Flanders Fields’ was a big inspiration for the piece,” Sarah said. “I knew I wanted to include poppies.”
Sarah spent a few months planning the mural and then worked from May through July of 2023 on the project, spending almost every day at the VFW.
She often brought along her Dalmatian, Smokey, to keep her company while she put in four- to six-hour shifts, and he proved to be very popular with the veterans.
“They really liked him, and he liked all the attention,” she said, noting that her father, Brett Hamm, is the Mount Joy fire chief and the family has always had Dalmations. Sarah is also the daughter of Elaine Hamm of Mount Joy.
Sarah, currently studying emergency management at Millersville University, has been a Girl Scout since she was in kindergarten.
Earning her Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts, was always a priority, she said, especially after she earned the highest awards available to Girl Scout Juniors and Cadettes.
“Our troop was very active, and we were blessed to have a really amazing troop leader,” she stated. “She gave us opportunities to get our Bronze and Silver awards, and I wanted that full-circle moment. I wanted all three.”
Sarah is a member of the 2024 Gold Award Girl Scout class, and she was recognized for her project at a ceremony at Bucknell University earlier in June. She said completing her project was time-consuming and difficult at times but completely worth it.
“I’m very passionate about community service. It’s a big part of me as a person and of my faith,” she said. “I find joy from it. … I gave a lot of time to my project, but I gained so much in return. I enjoyed talking to the veterans, hearing their stories and getting to know them. That’s not something I would have done otherwise without this project.”
season,” said Jonas Nissley, general manager. “It’s a beautiful, relaxing setting to be enjoyed by dancers, music lovers, wine lovers, beer lovers and anyone who enjoys live music in a relaxing, picturesque environment.”
New this year, Nissley will feature family-friendly Friday nights, when milkshakes and non-alcoholic slushies will be served, and face painting will be available. Saturday evening concerts are for people age 21 and up.
Adding the family nights will help bring the Summerfest experience to even more people, Nissley said. “We want to be able to share our venue with people of all ages,” he explained. “For many years, children were welcome at our lawn concerts. Later in life, those kids started attending our concerts as adults. We want our venue to be a place where different genera tions of the same family can enjoy what we offer.”
lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the music. Concerts are held rain or shine unless there is substantial, sustained rain.
Summerfest concerts offer a perfect escape where rows of ripening grapes, shady woods around an old lime kiln and a stone-arch winery provide a beautiful backdrop, Nissley said.
“The venue is a perfect place to gather friends and family or create a romantic night out,” he shared. “It’s the right balance of fun and relaxing.”
For a complete list of concerts and for more information, visit www.nissley wine.com/summerfest or follow Nissley Vineyards on Facebook.
To find bands for the summer concert series, Nissley staff members scout local shows in search of top talent. Many of the performers have been entertaining at the vineyard for more than a decade, Nissley noted.
Summerfest will kick off on Friday, July 5, with a concert by PopScotch. The band performs pop, rock and funk music. On Saturday, July 6, Buncha funk will entertain. The group plays rock, jazz and funk. Additional highlights include Mama Tried, a high-energy variety dance band, on Saturday, July 13, and the Kracker Beez, a rock and dance cover band, on Friday, Aug. 30. Each concert will also feature food trucks. On July 5, food will be available from Brotherly Love Scratch Kitchen, Wich Way Sandwiches and Scoop O’Dough. On July 6, food will be provided by Nano Burger, Brewster’s Bar-B-Que and Pretzel Spot Café.
Guests are also welcome to bring in their own food, Nissley said. Nissley wine will be available for purchase, along with beer from Moo-Duck Brewery.
People are also invited to bring lawn games to set up on the macadam lot, and concert-goers should bring
