LSRC’s generosity supports hungry county residents

It’s an incredible act of kindness. It’s a well-thought-out distribution of donations. It’s providing a needed resource to a deserving nonprofit.

But it’s also just one example of what Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club (LSRC) does. The local service club sometimes makes extraordinary acts of empathy seem routine.

Recently, LSRC donated $70,000 to help Meals on Wheels Lancaster purchase a new delivery van.

“If you want to know anything about Rotary, it’s service above self,” said Bill Weik, an LSRC board member. “I think our club does a great job of taking that to the next level and doing what we do. As an organization, we do a lot of good for a lot of people who are impacted positively. Sometimes it’s not a big project but a small one. We make sure the things slipping through the cracks get some light.”

In the middle of November, the 2024 Chevrolet City Express cargo van that LSRC helped fund was officially donated to Meals on Wheels Lancaster. Through an annual fundraiser, LSRC raised $70,000 of the $76,000 required to purchase the cargo van, which is equipped with refrigeration and heating units that allow for safe transportation of food to residents in need across Lancaster County.

Mondays through Fridays, Meals on Wheels Lancaster prepares hot meals and cold meals in its Columbia Avenue kitchen

and distributes the much-needed food to up to 450 local residents.

“We’re so excited about the van. It’s critical to our operations,” said Feleen Nancarvis, executive director of Meals on Wheels Lancaster. “The new van replaces one that had a lot of deficiencies as far as keeping hot food hot and cold food cold. It was also

limited in the number of meals it could carry. Now we can fit as many meals in the new van as we want and maintain the quality of the food when it arrives at our clients.”

“After a couple of years of hard work, when we saw that van, it was an amazing feeling,” said Beth Mack, an LSRC board

When it comes to laughs, Drew Beekler is a standup guy

Drew Beekler doesn’t want you to laugh at him; he wants you to laugh with yourself.

“I think the key to being funny is to talk about something weird in the world or odd,” said Beekler.

“There’s a place for everyone, and if you’ve thought that, you’re probably not alone. You can present things in a funny way, but you can also point out absurd things. Humor tends to come from a place of frustration. It can be super dark, or I just don’t like the back of a guy’s head. Everyone has thousands and thousands of thoughts a day. You can talk about them, and people can relate to them.”

A 2006 graduate of Manheim Township High School, Beekler is funny by nature; humor is one of his talents. But he is a budding standup comedian because he has fine-tuned and honed those skills.

Dyslexia is something that we might not fully understand. Dyslexia may be something we don’t talk enough about. Dyslexia might be more prevalent than we realize.

It’s a learning disorder that Children’s Dyslexia Center (CDC) of Lancaster can help manage and, in some instances, even overcome.

“What everyone needs to understand is that (dyslexia is) neurological, it runs in families

“At the end of the day, I think we should just be having fun and laughing at the things we do,” said Beekler. “You might think you’re alone with things, but you’re really not. Shared experiences, in general, are very

and it affects language processing,” said Heather Brown, who’s been CDC of Lancaster’s director for 10 years. “What it’s not is reading backwards. It’s about how kids process language, how the brain processes language. Words and sentences look the same, but it’s daunting to read. Students work so hard to get through paragraphs that by the end of them they don’t remember the meaning. You have to break the reading code. We teach kids how to break that code, so it frees the brain up.”

Meals on Wheels Lancaster executive director Feleen Nancarvis shows off the new delivery van, which was partly funded through a donation from the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club.

important. When people laugh, it’s an acknowledgment of that shared experience.”

Beekler, who currently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y., has been doing standup comedy for about seven years now, performing as many as seven to 10 times a week, mostly at comedy clubs or bars in Brooklyn and Greenwich Village and on Broadway, but he’s also taken his act on the road outside of New York City. His humor shticks, which consist of astute observations and relatable human reflections, are generally between 20 and 45 minutes in length.

“It’s awesome. It’s dope. It’s rad,”

member. “This is about people putting a bit of time together to make great things happen. Every year we champion one big event. It’s received well, and every event ends up with passion behind it.”

LSRC raised the money for the van donation through its 2022 Fall Fest Fundraiser at Aberdeen Acres in Elizabethtown. After an application

said Beekler of the feelings he gets from making people chuckle. “It’s someone relating to you in some capacity. Every time I go to a show, I think, ‘I’m doing this for someone who paid to see me.’ I was in special (education) when I was in school, and I talk about it. I talk about it in a way that I’m comfortable with it.”

For now, performing as a standup comedian is Beekler’s side hustle. By day, he works as a visual effects compositor, for which he won an Emmy award for his special visual effects work on the Netflix series “Ridley.”

“I don’t do (standup comedy) for the money right now, but I’d love

and review process, Meals on Wheels Lancaster was chosen as the beneficiary of the funds.

“I think we do a good job of connecting with companies that know we’re going to be good stewards of the money we receive,” said Mack. “Each year, we come up with a short list of organizations that the public can really get behind. It’s something that’s going to be sustainable and have a huge impact.”

to do it for a living,” said Beekler, 37. “I’d love it to be something I pay all my bills with, but I don’t worry about the money part of it. I’ve done real gigs and lost money just for the experience. I take a lot of spots in the city (New York) that are unpaid.”

A graduate of the Art Institute of York - Pennsylvania and the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Beekler was exposed to humor and comedy at a young age. He just kind of grew into being funny.

“I think I learned to have fun,” said Beekler. “At home, we just tried to make it as lighthearted as much as we could. It was like always trying to have fun and not being serious all the time.”

LSRC, whose 44 members meet from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. on Thursdays at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz, has been serving the local community for more than 40 years. LSRC is one of about a dozen Rotary Clubs operating in Lancaster County.

LSRC’s charitable work also supports educational programs at local schools, mentorship programs and women’s fitness programs.

“It’s businesspeople getting together to do big things,” said Weik. “You should have a passion outside of your profession. It’s people who feel they need to be doing more than their jobs. When you’re not here anymore, what are people going to remember about what you did? It’s passionate people helping out our community.” For additional information about the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club, go to www.lancastersunrise rotaryofpa.com.

WINTER DISCOUNTS

Located at 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, CDC of Lancaster teaches school-age children with dyslexia from Lancaster, Dauphin, York, Chester and Lebanon counties how to read, write and spell. Much of the work is performed in one-onone settings after school.

CDC of Lancaster also trains adults how to tutor kids with dyslexia. All of its services are provided free of charge.

“(The number of people affected by dyslexia is) a hard number to quantify,” said Brown. “It’s estimated that between 10% and 20% of the population has some form of dyslexia. I’d say that half of our parents are undiagnosed dyslexics. But only 8% of the population is getting tested.”

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the literacy rate among adults in the United States is 79%.

CDC of Lancaster, which employs about a dozen instructors, works with about 20 kids with some form of dyslexia each semester, or about 40 per year.

“They come here after a day of school and push through an hour of hard tutoring,” said Brown. “For a lot of our kids, it takes them two or three times longer to read than their peers. When they see how easy it is for their peers, it becomes frustrating. They’re on the same level, but they’re putting forth so much more effort. But you need to read to succeed. We accomplish our goals by putting one step in

front of the other every day. We teach kids how to be confident readers and writers.”

“Most of our students are born with dyslexia, so it can be hereditary,” Brown continued. “It’s neurological. It’s how we’re born. Somebody can be really good at math and others not as good. It’s the same with reading. For some kids, it takes longer to read. There are even different kinds of dyslexia. We teach kids the steps to overcome the challenges with dyslexia.”

A regional organization associated with the Scottish Rite of Masons of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, CDC operates more than 40 centers in 13 states in New England, Pennsylvania, Ohio and parts of the Midwest. Since being established in 2002, CDC of Lancaster has helped more than 260 kids with dyslexia, 150 of whom have graduated from its program.

“The science behind this isn’t

fancy,” said Brown. “It’s breaking down the reading code, and a lot of it hasn’t changed. We want to build confidence in our students so they can succeed. We teach the why behind language to make meaning of it.”

CDC of Lancaster performs its work independently and is not associated with any public or private schools.

“It costs money to treat (dyslexia), and it’s expensive,” said Brown. “The good news is that Pennsylvania is starting to recognize it and they’re starting to teach the science of reading. They are requiring reading teachers to take classes in the science of reading.”

“I wish we didn’t exist,” Brown added. “I wish we didn’t have to have a Children’s Dyslexia Center because schools were teaching their students with dyslexia.”

Manheim Township School Board Selects Chester County Intermediate Unit for Superintendent Search

At the November 14, 2024 school board work session, the Manheim Township School Board reviewed proposals from three superintendent search firms:

• Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13

• Chester County Intermediate Unit 24

• Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) After carefully considering each proposal, the Board unanimously selected Chester County Intermediate Unit to lead the search for the district’s next superintendent at their November 21, 2024, School Board Voting Meeting.

The search process will begin this month and will involve the gathering of input from a wide range of district stakeholders such as staff, families, students, and community members. This input will help identify the desired qualities for the new superintendent. Additional details will be provided in the near future regarding this process.

The Manheim Township School Board and Chester County Intermediate Unit are excited to work alongside the community and district stakeholders in this important process. Thank you for your continued support of our school district.
