Pequea Valley

A tribute to veterans

On Nov. 8, Paradise Elementary School held a Veterans Day assembly, honoring area residents who served or are serving in the armed forces.

Rick Esche, school principal, opened the ceremony, saying to the students, “I can tell by your enthusiasm that you’re ready for an amazing assembly.” Esche went on to laud the students who had organized the event.

“The most amazing part of this assembly is that it was planned by our sixth-grade learners and facilitators,” said Esche, who noted that the organizers were responsible for everything from the decorations to the script.

“This was all planned by students just like you, and we will have a lot of fun if you are safe, respectful, and responsible during the presentation.”

Esche then turned the microphone over to a number

of sixth-grade students, who passed it among themselves.

The students began by asking for a round of applause for the nearly one dozen veterans who had come to the school to celebrate Veterans Day. The colors were presented by members of local Boy and Girl Scout troops who are students at the school.

Audience members were asked to stand for the presentation of the colors and to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The pledge was followed by “The Star-Spangled Banner” sung by music teacher Alicia Trescavage. Many students joined Trescavage by singing where they stood.

Paula Diem, coordinator of the Pequea Valley area chapter of Wreaths Across America (WAA), was introduced by students who noted that she is also referred to as “Aunt Paula.” “I’m excited to share what is happening with WAA,” said Diem, who pointed out that this year’s wreath-laying

ceremony, which will occur prior to laying wreaths in area cemeteries, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Pequea Valley Intermediate School,166 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers, at noon. “I know you have been learning about veterans and why they are so important,” Diem told the students. “WAA honors veterans who are living and those who have passed away.” Diem then asked members of each branch of the military to stand. Four Army veterans, two Marines, three Navy veterans, one Air Force veteran, and one Coast Guard veteran were present. As each veteran stood, the students erupted with applause. “We also honor those from all branches whose last status was as a prisoner of war or missing in action,” Diem reminded them. “We honor our veterans because each of you live in the land of the free and the home of the brave because of the dedication of veterans,” she told

the students. “I think we owe them a huge round of applause.”

After the students applauded again, Diem asked them to bring their parents, grandparents, and neighbors to join WAA on Dec. 14 to help lay 3,000 wreaths in the Pequea Valley area to honor veterans.

When Diem finished speaking, a video called “A Tribute to Our Troops” was played. The video featured photos of members of the armed forces associated with the school set to the music of the Armed Forces Medley.

To conclude the event, taps was played by Paradise students Annabelle Herr and Chloe Wolfe. Each veteran who attended received a hand-colored card thanking him or her for serving as well as a small gift.

Linville students encouraged to SHINE

According to representatives of Linville Hill Christian School, SHINE is not an acronym. In fact, the program, which provides love and support to Linville’s students with unique needs in kindergarten through grade 12, is based on Isaiah 60:1, which reads, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”

SHINE was born in 2018, according to Matt Buckwalter, head of school. Prior to that time, Linville had a small program serving half a dozen children with unique needs, but a board member pointed out that a Christian school should be doing more. Buckwalter credits Karen Bailey, a teacher at the school at that time, with creating the foundation of the program around the verse from Isaiah. “That’s so powerful for students who aren’t finding traction the way that most kids do,” explained Buckwalter.

Now, SHINE serves 15 students at the Linville Hill Elementary School, where Cindy Mylin is the lead teacher overseeing academics and Danielle Ladley is the lead for behavioral support and guidance. At the Upper School, April Henshaw is the SHINE lead and middle school counselor, serving nearly 30 students. Most SHINE students have Individual Education Plans (IEP), provided by their home school districts.

SHINE elementary school students spend much of their day with their peers. “They come to us for reading, spelling, writing, grammar, and math,” explained

Great things in store

When Steve Ritchey and his family - wife Lori, daughter Logan, and son Landon - took me on a tour of the nearly finished Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, 1279 Main St., East Earl, the watchword for the new facility was “expansion.”

Ground for the new church building was broken in spring of 2023, and as the building nears completion, staff members, including the youth and connections pastor, Landon, and the administrator, Logan, are looking forward to the grand opening during the 9 a.m. service on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025. The congregation began holding services in the new building on Dec. 8. Christmas services will be held at the church at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, and there will be a Christmas Eve service Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 6 p.m.

“We have a little over 60,000 square feet, but everything is built to expand,” said Steve, who celebrated 30 years pastoring the church on Dec. 8. “The reason we built this large was because our expectation is that God will do great things and that He has great things in store for our region,” said Steve.

The main entrance will bring visitors into a twostory foyer. The subtly shaded surroundings are done in gray and cream

with accent walls in light blue and green colors. Continuity is provided by the gray and black carpet found throughout the building and subway tile accents in white and gray tones.

Steve explained that the footprint of the downstairs is repeated on the second floor, where five large adult Sunday school classes are located. Other second-floor areas are left open to provide room for growth.

To the right of the main entrance is a café. Behind the café is an industrial kitchen, which serves both the café and the full gym, which can be set up to seat 300 for a fellowship meal with a staging area for presentations.

“This will be the sanctuary,” said Steve, stepping on to the stage of the new worship area. “The

downstairs will seat 680,” he noted, adding that the balcony, which will open later, will offer seating for hundreds more. The room boasts a built-in baptismal area, a 16-by-10-foot LED wall, two projectors, and two screens. Near the sanctuary will be a parents’ room and a room for nursing moms. Lori pointed out the ADA-compliant chair lift and restrooms. The first floor of the

building also contains a chapel, which will double as an area for youth events, and a suite of 11 offices, a conference room, and a reception area inside the west entrance to the building. To the right of the sanctuary is a self-contained children’s education area. Logan explained the Sunday school process for children. “The kids go to worship with parents, because we believe it’s important for families to be together and for kids to witness their parents living out their faith,” she said, adding that children will be dismissed to their Sunday school classes after worship. For security purposes, the kids will be checked in by parents at a reception desk of the

children’s section. Logan pointed out classrooms that can be subdivided into smaller rooms. Several Jack and Jill bathrooms are included in the area, with some located between classrooms. Lori pointed out that the children’s ministry area, like the offices, has its own kitchenette area for convenience.

On the east side of the first floor is a room that

will be a large food pantry. “We will hold quarterly community meals on the same night the food pantry (is open),” said Logan, who noted that personal products will be available as well. A clothing bank will also be offered periodically. Lori pointed to the office for the food pantry and the covered entryway where recipients may pull up in their cars. The food pantry

will be held on the first and third Fridays of each month from 6 to 7 p.m.

On the second floor, five large adult classrooms will be available for classes and meetings. An outdoor living space is located on the east side of the building to enjoy lunches and evening fellowship. “You can see for miles,” shared Logan. With the exception

of the adult classrooms, much of the second floor will remain unfinished for now. “This could be the youth sanctuary,” said Steve, gesturing to the large area. “When we outgrow, we will simply move up here to these unfinished areas,” said Steve. “We just

pop windows in then. We don’t know what the Lord will have for this area.”

Landon explained that the café will open each Sunday following the church service for fellowship. “At 11 a.m., we will have Connect Hour,” he said. “Connect Hour is when leadership and discipleship classes for adults will be held, and there will be youth and kids’ ministries meetings.”

In addition, the church will continue to hold a Wednesday night program at 7 p.m., which will include youth and children’s ministry and a service for adults.

Landon also pointed out that the angle of the building is set to be seen by those approaching from several directions. “The building is built at an angle so it can be seen better from Route 23,” he said. Steve stated that those coming from Route 23 East and Route 625 will see the building as they reach the intersection of those roads. “You can see the building from Terre Hill,” added Landon.

Mylin, who added that if a child has a need for support in other classes, that can be provided by a full-time or part-time SHINE teacher.

Each student’s IEP is used to create a SHINE plan to help him or her reach specific goals. A meeting is held with parents to show them how SHINE can help meet their child’s educational and behavioral needs. “What is unique to Linville is that we want to partner with families and make sure our SHINE teams are working in one accord,” said Henshaw.

from pg 1

Mylin agreed, stating, “We are very concerned about academics, but we hold equally their hearts and their spirits.”

Throughout the day, Ladley works with students dealing with unique behavioral situations. “I pull them for social skills groups, and they take breaks as needed,” she stated. “I provide extra support.”

At the Upper School, students are integrated with their classmates whenever possible, with the SHINE teachers ready to provide support. “We modify

assignments and test to their needs,” explained Henshaw, who pointed out that one 10th-grade student is forgoing an elective while

she receives extra tutoring in reading and writing. Henshaw is also teaching a class in anatomy and physiology

“Instead of stretching a student too far and thin, we work to strengthen the foundation,” explained Buckwalter.

Upper School SHINE students also take part in Linville Hill’s internship program, which partners with area businesses and organizations to provide

Henshaw’s daughter Mylee, a Linville Hill ninth-grader who has autism, currently works with fifth-graders at the elementary school, where she completes tasks such as grading papers.

“I like being able to work with animals and seeing how much (effort) the vets put in to keep the animals healthy,” said Maddie.

“What the SHINE program does is help a child find her voice in an atmosphere where she can grow in social confidence and abilities,” said Buckwalter.

Ladley noted that SHINE children are regularly held up in prayer by staff and faculty members. “To be able to pray over a student who is struggling,” she said, “I think it’s essential for growth in the Lord.”
