very time she plans a trip, Tracy Pawelski considers one thing first: Where can she walk? Tracy, who has traveled to 40 countries, has conquered some of the longest walks in the world, including El Camino de Santiago - an ancient pilgrimage in Spain, the scenic Dingle Way in Ireland and the Annapurna Circuit in the Himalayas. She’ll talk about her experiences when the Elizabeth Hughes Society presents “ Walking Around the World.” The program will

Highlights of the walk included the Cruz de Ferro or Iron Cross. “It’s a humble place where people bring a token from home, and they leave it there,” Tracy explained. “It’s about leaving behind whatever
burdens you’re carrying.” From her experience, Tracy wrote her first book in her “One Woman” travel series, “One Woman’s Camino.” “The walk was all about metaphors, and that’s what the book
is about, too,” she said. “When we were walking, I carried a pack on my back that weighed about 15 pounds. Juliet carried about 30 pounds. This was a metaphor for what we all need to carry on our journey through life. It’s dif-
The students at Kraybill Mennonite School (KMS) in Mount Joy live by the Word of God, including the importance of serving others. “It tells us in the Bible (to give to others),” said kindergartner Ruby Hershey. She was one of the students schoolwide who participated in a project to support Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) in December. Students collected packages of individually wrapped snack items to assemble to-go bags for the organization. Students also decorated brown paper bags and worked together to assemble the bags with the food items that guests at the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter can take with them when they leave the shelter for the day. “One of the goals of KMS is to share the love of Jesus with our community,” said fifthgrade teacher Cindy Raezer, who coordinated the project with kindergarten teacher Ashlie Cobb. “This is a tangible way to show that love. It is also important for the students to learn at a young age to give to others.” Each year, staff members at the school choose a Christmas project for students to help a local organization. ECHOS was a natural choice, Cobb said. “After looking into this amazing organization, we saw all that they do to support residents in our community who are struggling with housing and food insecur ity,” she recalled. “ L o o k f o r yo u r n e x t inspired step, and take it.” be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 22, at St. Paul’s Church of Elizabethtown, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. The meeting is open to the public. Professionally, Tracy worked in strategic communications and reputation management for a variety of companies and organizations, including Giant Food Stores. In 2015, she decided it was time for something new. Her daughter, Juliet, had just graduated from college, and she wanted to walk El Camino. “I was looking for my next step, and I asked her if I could come along,” Tracy recalled, noting she was delighted when Juliet agreed. “How many 21-year-old girls want to walk 500 miles with their mom?” That walk was Tracy’s first long-distance trek, and she loved it. It took her 35 days to complete the walk.

A friend she’d met on the walk was putting together a small trip to Nepal to walk the Annapurna Circuit in the fall of 2015, and Tracy signed up. Early on in the walk, her host had to turn back due to a health issue, and Tracy faced a choice. “I had a decision to make - which way am I going to go? Up?

“Honey bees pollinate a third of everything we eat,” said Master Beekeeper Denny Gorman. “Without them, we wouldn’t have most of the fruit we eat. Honey bees also pollinate 100% of the almonds grown in this country.” Gor man, who is vice president of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society, is passionate about the insects. He invites other people who are interested in learning more to attend the 2024 New Beekeeper Workshop. It will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. T he event will cover ever ything people need to s t a r t t h e h o b b y o f beekeeping. “We provide a continental breakfast and a very nice lunch,” Gorman said. “I personally teach a class in honey bee biology and hive biology. We teach classes in how to extract honey, where to place your hives, a little bit on diseases. We try to prepare a new beekeeper with the basic info they need to start beekeeping.” Gorman has been a beekeeper for seven years.
He started the hobby after he retired from a career in business. “I wanted something to keep my mind sharp and something that I knew nothing about,” he said. He attended his first beekeeper workshop and now is vice president of the organization that got him hooked on the hobby. “Bees are amazingly intelligent,” he shared. “They can understand the concept of zero. They can recognize human faces.” Bees often get a bad rap, Gorman noted, because they sting , and he has endured his share of pain from the hobby. “After a while, it hardly bothers you at all,” he said simply. It’s worth the discomfort to know he’s doing his part to help the environment, he said. “As a group, we’re doing our best to save the bees,” he explained. Due to a variety of factors, including loss of habitat, the honey bee population is declining. Attending the workshop provides people with a oneyear membership in the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. Established in 1876 as the Lancaster Honey Producers Association, the society exists to promote better understanding of honey bee biol-

Me e t i n g s include educational topics about beekeeping as well as hive checks at the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center located at 1446 Auction Road in Manheim. “Members can come once a month to the center, and they can learn all about the bees without having to handle the bees,” Gorman said. “Experts will show the hives and talk about beekeeping.”
The workshop is a good first step into beekeeping, and it provides the perfect opportunity to get an idea of what beekeeping is all about, he noted. “If you are at all curious about honey bees and saving the bees, come to this workshop,” Gorman said. “You’ll get a good, basic understanding of how important bees are to our environment and our food chain.” Space is limited for the workshop, and registration is required. The NNDCC program is offered on a limited basis and is the precursor to the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program. The Elizabethtown Area School District is one
of only a handful of schools in the commonwealth to be able to offer the NNDCC program. T he NNDCC program is designed to expand students’ opportunities to gain the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal resp onsibilit y, and a sense of accomplishment. The NNDCC is for ninth- through 12th-grade students considering an career in the armed forces. It includes a four-course curriculum covering civics, national security, oceanography, and technolog y. community engagement coordinator Carrie Stricker, they decided to help fill the to-go bags for shelter guests. “Because of the overwhelming generosity of our KMS families, we were able to donate 500 to-go bags,” Cobb said. T he donations filled three vehicles, she noted, and the project engaged students of all ages. “When we say that this is an all-school Christmas giving project, it truly was all school,” Cobb noted. “The entire KMS community worked together, from families and staff bringing in donations, our littlest ones in pre-K to our oldest ones in eighth grade deco-
rating brown paper bags, students assembling the 500 bags, carrying donations and loading them into vehicles. Our students and families worked together as a body to support ECHOS with this donation.” While the project made an impact on the guests at the shelter, it also positively affected the students at KMS. “It felt good to help people who are in need,” said fifth-grader Peyton Hopper. Added sixth-grader Cydney Patrick, “I learned that it feels pretty good to give, and it’s good to give to others who need stuff. I think it’s important to give to others.”

Peaceful sleep is something many of us take for granted, but for the family of Hayden Rettew, sleep is a struggle. Hayden, an 8-year-old second-grader at Lafayette Elementary School in Lancaster city, was diagnosed with Dravet syndrome when he was 8 months old. The rare form of epilepsy causes frequent seizures and developmental delays. “Hayden struggles with sleep difficulties and elopement,” noted his mom, Erika Rettew, referring to her son’s tendency to get up and leave his bed. Thanks to the Columbia Lions Club, Hayden’s nights should soon become a bit more restful. The club members wrote a grant to the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Service Foundation to purchase a Cubby Bed for Hayden. The bed is specially designed with padded walls and securable doors, sensory features and remote monitoring. “ The Cubby Bed will allow Hayden to sleep independently and safely,” Erika shared. One of the Lions, John Meshey, is good friends with Hayden’s grandfather and had seen Erika’s post on Facebook about needing the bed. “She was fundraising for it, because insurance had denied their request for help,” explained Lion Kyle Oster. “They didn’t consider the bed a necessity.” Erika and her husband, Ryan, had held a variety of fundraisers in an effort
to raise the more than $13,000 needed to purchase the bed. “John and I asked each other, ‘Do you think we could write a grant to the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Service Foundation, and they would consider funding some of it?’” Oster recalled. “They’re willing to help anybody who’s in need, especially children.” Initially, Meshey and Oster asked the foundation to cover some of the expense, emphasizing that the Rettew family could help with the cost, but to their surprise, the foundation provided all of the funds. The grant - for $13,490 - was awarded in October, and the club received the funds in November. The Rettews now have the bed and are working on transitioning Hayden to it. Erika said she was overwhelmed when she found out the grant had paid for the bed. “ We were filled with gratitude and couldn’t believe they wanted to cover the entire thing,” Erika said. Hayden experienced his first seizure at 2 months old. Dravet syndrome is difficult to treat, Erika said, because the seizures are not managed with current medications. Hayden lives at home with his mom, dad and younger brothers, Sawyer, age 5, and Lincoln, age 3. He has two nurses who help care for him at home during the week and go to school with him, as he’s See Hayden pg 9
