Second- and third-graders are the perfect age to learn something new, said Laura Landis, president of Bible2School - Elizabethtown. In a one-room schoolhouse at Rissers Mennonite Church, they are learning about the Word of God. Bible2School - Elizabethtown holds classes for secondgraders who attend East High Elementary School on Tuesdays and for third-graders who attend Bear Creek School on Wednesdays.
Classes are held over the students’ lunch and recess time, and busing is provided by the program to the site and back from the schools.
“The second-graders are learning stories from the Old Testament, and the third-graders are hearing stories from the New Testament,” said teacher Karen Olweiler. Each week, the students bring their lunches to enjoy while instructors introduce the lesson of the day and recap the previous week’s topic. Each lesson is accompanied by
games, activities and songs. “This age group has a lot of energy, so we like to play games and keep them active,” Olweiler noted.
Landis said targeting the program to second- and third-graders is intentional. “It’s important that we reach children at this age,” she said, noting that the students are old enough to understand the lessons but young enough to still be impressionable. “Some of the students don’t go to church and have not heard about Jesus. This could be their first experience with any of
these stories or with the Bible.”
Olweiler explained that focusing on elementary school students also sets the children up for success in all aspects of their life. “It’s very important for these students to have a foundation of truth,” she said. “As these kids get older, they’ll face peer pressure, and they’ll have to make some big decisions. It’s important that they have this foundation to build on when they are making those choices.”
Landis understands firsthand what it’s like to be a young child hearing about the Bible for the first time. She participated in a similar program as a youth in the 1950s. “I can still remember seeing the Bible stories on the flannel board they used,” she recalled, noting that she became a lifelong Christian. “These students are learning to pray. They are learning they can talk to God.”
That relationship with God is a focal point of the classes, Olweiler said, noting, “The students learn that God loves them, and they can talk to Him anywhere, anytime. They learn they are special in God’s eyes.”
She emphasized that the Bible2School - Elizabethtown program also spotlights kindness and friendship. “We encourage them to be kind and respectful with each other,” she commented. “We’ve had kids in the past who have been bullied, and they can come here and have a different environment where they are surrounded by kindness and love for each other.”
Bible2School - Elizabethtown is currently enrolling new students, and the organization is looking for volunteers to teach classes as well as to drive the minibus purchased by the organization. No special license is required to drive the bus, Landis said, and volunteers need to be available for about an hour on Tuesdays and Wednesdays over lunchtime. Looking back on a Winter Field Day event, Ralph Hess, president of Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), recalled a story about a gentleman, a newcomer to the hobby, who helped him set up antennas for amateur, ham for short, radio operation. “We got the antenna hooked to the radio, and I threw out my call sign and a (ham) got back to me from Poland,” said Hess, who added that the gentleman was astounded. “He said, ‘That piece of wire I just touched let you talk to Poland?’” Hess relayed. Hess used an internet program to confirm the contact.
The 2023 event, presented by a partnership between RRR and the Winter Field Day Association, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. See Ham Radio pg 6

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that
procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful.
In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of
the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It looks like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”
Students participating in JA Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to review materials or visit more booths, and they can email specific questions to company representatives.
Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical
location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having inperson career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and allows students to see more companies in a shorter amount of time.”
JA Inspire is provided to schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the career fair can contact their local PA CareerLink agency for more information.
JA Inspire will return this year and will be open from Wednesday, March 1, to Friday, June 30. For more information, visit https://tinyurl .com/jainspirefair.

ET Swim Teams Sport Idential 5-1 Records

What do you get when you combine a strong finish to the 2022 portion of your schedule with an equally strong beginning to the 2023 portion...the Elizabethtown swimming season. The Bears on both sides of the pool rock a 5-1 overall mark with wins over Manheim Central, Cocalico and Conestoga Valley all coming in 2023.
“ We celebrated senior night against CV, and it was a great night to recognize the seniors on our team and get some quality races in,” said head coach Chad Houck of his team’s double win, 111-56 for the boys and 130-33 for the girls over Conestoga Valley on the 16th.
The Lady Bears claimed all 11 races with Morgan Conway leading the solo charge with two wins (200-freestyle, 500freestyle). Julia Garber (200 IM), Rene Oltmans (50-free), Ali Fink (100-fly), Olivia Hirst (100-free), Genna McDonald (100-breaststroke) and Tessa Cronin (100-back) rounded out the solo wins to go along with wins in the 200-medley relay as well as the 200- and 400freestyle relays.
The boys also claimed all three relays with five wins in individual races. Everett Rachael led that charge with wins in the 200-free and 500free. Nathan Yohn (50-free), Reid Gilmore (100-fly) and Logan Conway (100-breaststroke) accounted for the three remaining victories.
In Elizabethtown’s doubles win over Cocalico on the 12th it was the boy’s team winning the solo victory battle thanks to Rachael and Jack Ketchum. Everett claimed the 200- and
500-free while Ketchum took the 100-back and 200 IM. Add in wins by Gilmore (10- fly) and Yohn (50-free) coupled with a relay sweep and you get a 107-61 victory.
For the Lady Bears, Conway was the lone double victor in the 110-60 win, taking both the 100-breaststroke and the 500-free. Another replay sweep coupled with wins by Fink (100-fly), Cronin (100-back) and Stephanie Hall (200-free) rounded out the team win.
The Lady Bears used top three sweeps in six of the eight individual events combined with three relay wins to post a 127-33 victory over Central on the 10th. Garber led the way with wins in the 200 IM and 500-free while Conway (200free), McDonald (50-free), Annale Nguyen (100-free) and Hirst (100-back) claimed the remaining solo wins.
On the boys’ side it was more of the same with Rachael posting two solo wins to lead the Bears to a 107-56 victory over the Barons. The Bears swept the relays and matched the Lady Bears six solo event wins but were unable to match the six top three sweeps. Rachael’s two victories came in the 200-free and 500-free while Yohn (50-free), Gilmore (100-fly), Ketchum (100-back) and Trevor Nolen (100-breaststroke) rounded out the wins.
BOWLING
Moving over to the bowling alley, the Bears sit at 60-25 on the year after back-to-back-toback losses. Two of the losses came to Manheim Township on the 11th and LampeterStrasburg on the 16th with Warwick taking a 4-3 win on the 17th.
The quintet of Derek Dear-
dorff, Zach Wentzel, Mason Moore, Ella Eberle and Declan Lentz led E-town to 7-0 wins over Central York on the 5th and Ephrata on the 9th. All five broke the 600-pin plateau against Ephrata while only Deardorff and Wentzel managed the same against Central York.
AIR RIFLE
The air rifle team is stuck in a twisted version of the twostep, having two sets of backto-back wins and two sets of back-to-back losses, leaving the Bears with a 4-4 mark. Elizabethtown picked up one of each set over their last four matches, topping Wilson 497483 on the 5th and Conestoga Valley 588-586 on the 10th. The losses were to Manheim Township, 497-492, on the 12th and to Governor Mifflin, 497-493, on the 17th.
BASKETBALL
The new year has not been kind to Elizabethtown basketball. The boy’s team has gone 1-4 in 2023 to fall to 5-11 overall while the Lady Bears are 1-5 in the new year with a 3-12 overall record.
The boys’ win came on the 6th when E-town topped Solanco 44-39. The Bears started slow and trailed after the opening frame but outscored the Golden Mules 36-28 the rest of the way. Brandon Andrews netted a game high 15 while Caiden Zeager added 12 points.
Elizabethtown was back in action on the 9th, falling to Donegal, 61-56, in double overtime. E-town built a five-point cushion over the first half only to see the Indians erase that lead with an 11-6 fourth quarter. A similar run came in the second OT period for Donegal,
securing the win. Zeager topped the Bears scoring with 20 points while Brenden Lehman added 14.
Elizabethtown stepped out of the L-L for their January 11th clash with Red Land that went to the Patriots 53-26. The Bears were outscored in three of the four quarters, including a 43-14 blitz over the second and third quarters. Zeager and Noah Locke both finished with six points.
A return to the L-L on the 13th did not help as Elizabethtown fell to Conestoga Valley 51-40. Andrews topped the Bear scorers with 17 points while Cooper Torborg chipped in with 13 points.
The Bears dropped another OT affair on the 17th, falling to Ephrata by a 67-63 final. The two sides traded blows with the Mountaineers landing the crucial 9-5 blow in the extra session. Zeager led a quartet in double figures with 18 points.
The lone Lady Bear win of 2023 came on the 9th with Etown beating Donegal 27-19 thanks to a 17-9 second half surge. Taryn Hummer led the way with 16 points.
Elizabethtown kicked off the new year on the 6th with Solanco handing out a 32-27 setback. The Golden Mares did the bulk of their damage in the second frame where they posted a 7-3 edge. Hummer finished with eight points in the loss.
The Lady Bears followed their win over Donegal with a 43-31 loss to Cocalico on the 12th. The Lady Eagles built a 31-14 cushion through three quarters, but E-town was able to hold a 17-12 edge in the final frame to shrink the final margin to 12 points. Hummer netted a team high seven for E-town.
One day later the Lady Bears were hosting Conestoga Valley with the Lady Buck-
skins posting a 39-20 victory before leaving town. In a bit of déjà vu, the Lady Bears were outscored in the first three frames before posting a slim 6-4 fourth quarter edge, leading to the 39-20 final. Jadyn Lloyd and Chloe Wilkinson finished with matching sixpoint games.
The most recent setback came on the 17th with Ephrata handing out a 56-22 loss. The Lady Mountaineers held the scoring edge in all four quarters with Hummer’s 11 points counting as the team high.
WRESTLING
The wrestling team suffered their first league loss on the 11th, falling to Manheim Central 35-28. Bradley Candy (285), Francis Burke (120) and Austin Reitmeyer (126) all enjoyed pinfall wins while Kai Laszakovits (138) and Nathan Thomas (145) posted standard decisions and Aiden Robinson (152) a major decision.

PeoplesBank Supports YMCA
PeoplesBank, represented by Teresa Greider (left), vice president and controller, presents a donation to Larry Richardson, president and CEO of the YMCA and the Y Community Development Corporation.
The group will begin to set up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. The event is held for 24 hours to include radio operators from all time zones. Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well as those with an interest in the hobby are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate, and visitors are welcome to drop in anytime and bring sleeping
bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight in the center. Several seminars will be offered during the event. At 10 a.m. on Jan. 28, Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) will give a presentation. Hess noted that the organization practices emergency drills for the closed Three Mile Island and the functioning Peach Bottom nuclear power plants because ham radios continue to operate when cellphones cannot and in areas where cell ser-

vices may be limited.
Additional workshops will instruct attendees in how to build three types of twometer antennas and one HF (high frequency) antenna. There is a nominal fee to build antennas to cover the costs of materials.
Presently, there are 50 licensed ham radio operators in the New Holland ZIP code and more than 1,500 in the county. Hess believes a chance to converse internationally attracts many to the
hobby. “We will be operating under our club call sign, so … anybody can come up and operate,” he said. “I can almost guarantee we will find someone outside the U.S. to talk to.” Hess noted that many visitors react positively to hearing a voice from another country over the radio. “People’s faces just light up,” he said.

Material Matters Names CEO
Environmental consulting firm Material Matters Inc. has named Lisa Challenger CEO of the company. The announcement was made by Trudy Johnston, founder of the 25-year-old company. Johnston plans to remain actively involved in the business.
Prior to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which was held from Jan. 7 to 14, state Sec-
retary of Agriculture Russell Redding unveiled the 2023 Pennsylvania Farm Show butter sculpture. Carved from 1,000 pounds of butter, it highlights this year’s theme, “Rooted in Progress.”
The sculpture, a longtime Farm Show staple that celebrates Pennsylvania’s 5,200 dairy farmers, highlights the strong roots Pennsylvania agriculture has today thanks to a vision rooted in progress and eight years of targeted support and investments for the industry.
In addition to Redding, speakers at the unveiling included Diana Dibble, vice president of integrated marketing communications for American Dairy Association North East; Steve Harnish from Central Manor Dairy; and sculptors Jim Victor and Marie Pelton.
Challenger is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Association, Pennsylvania Water Environment Association and Water Environment Federation (WEF), and has served as chair on WEF’s Residuals and Biosolids subcommittee.
Material Matters, 206 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, is an environmental consulting
firm serving municipal, commercial and industrial clients in 25 states across the United States. Material Matters is a certified Woman Owned Enterprise. For more information, visit www.material matters.com.
