Northwest EMS Will Hold Food Drive
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
More than 47,000 people in Lancaster County are food insecure, equating to about one in 11 people, according to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Among children, that number increases to one in eight. Northwest EMS is helping to address this problem.
Throughout the month of February, the organization will hold its annual food drive to benefit local food banks. Donations will be accepted at the Elizabethtown EMS station, 380 W. Bainbridge St., and at the Manheim EMS station, 60 W. Colebrook St.
“We’re looking for all kinds of food, particularly staples like pasta, sauce, canned vegetables and canned meats,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. She noted that the donation drive can accept some
perishables, but arrangements must be made specifically with her for the donations due to lack of storage at the stations. Personal hygiene items and paper products will also be accepted for the drive.
The drive has been held since 2014, and over the years, it’s been very successful, Shenk stated. In 2021, the stations collected more than 1,800 pounds of food. Last year was a bit of disappointment, she noted, although the drive did yield nine very large boxes of food.
“Nearly half of what we collected last year had to be discarded because it was out of date,” Shenk explained. Items will be delivered to the food banks at the beginning of March, so Shenk recommends that donations have a shelf life at least through the spring.
Items will be sorted by type, and the donations will be divided equally among the three food banks in the footprint served by Northwest
EMS: the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food Bank and the Manheim Central Food Pantry.
Holding a food drive is a natural extension of the services provided by Northwest EMS, Shenk remarked. “Our mission is to serve our community,” she said. “We have a unique view on the needs in our community because we’re in people’s homes. We see the need every day. … Food banks are a great resource for the community. The food drive is an easy thing for us to do to contribute indirectly to the health and well-being of the people we serve.”
The food drive will run through Tuesday, Feb. 28. Items will be delivered sometime during the first week in March. For more information on the food drive, contact Shenk at 717-371-8282 or lshenk@nwems86.org.

Last year was the first time Liv-ETown held a Chocolate Walk, and the event was very successful, Clint said. “We ran out of boxes in 45 minutes,” he recalled. “This year, thanks to the participating businesses and our event sponsor, we will have many more supplies to handle the demand.”
At 2nd Fridays, Elizabethtown businesses are encouraged to provide discounts or specials and have a feature or activity to highlight the evening’s festivities. The Chocolate Walk is just one of numerous events organized throughout the year by

Lady Bears Play Three Games in Five Days
BY ERIC PYLES
The time tested saying, “life isn’t always fair” surely did not come about as a basketball reference but it would apply to the Elizabethtown girl’s hoops season. Need proof, the Lady Bears saw their slide increase to six straight and 10 of 11 with losses to Manheim Central, Lampeter-Strasburg and Garden Spot.
That three-game run kicked off on January 20th with a 56-23 loss to Central. Despite the final being heavily slanted towards Manheim, Elizabethtown enjoyed a 12-9 advantage through the opening quarter. The Lady Barons started to take control in the second thanks to a 10-2 run that pushed Central in front at the break, 19-14. It was all Manheim from there as the Lady Barons ripped through the second half with a 37-9 edge to set that 56-33 final. Taryn Hummer topped the Lady Bear scorers with eight points.
Elizabethtown found themselves on the wrong end of a
different type of heartbreaker one day later, falling to Lampeter-Strasburg in overtime by a 36-30 final. Once again Etown started fast, jumping out to a 9-5 lead after the opening frame. The Lady Pioneers flipped momentum to their side through the middle two frames, with a 23-11 edge making it a 28-20. Elizabethtown regained their first quarter composure leading to a 10-2 run and a 30-30 affair at the end of regulation.
L-S stole the extra session via a 6-0 run, cementing the 36-30 final. Hummer led a quartet of Lady Bear scorers with 17 points. Jadyn Lloyd (eight points), Olivia Martin (three points) and Annabelle Price (two points) rounded out that quartet.
Elizabethtown had another overtime setback on the 24th, falling to Garden Spot by a 38-35 final. This time it was a sluggish first half that put Etown in a hole. The Lady Spartans worked an 18-11 cushion out of that opening half,
putting the Lady Bears in a seven-point hole. E-town began to work back with a slim 10-9 edge in the third before forcing OT with a 9-3 fourth quarter surge.
Spot was able to regain control in the extra session leading to the 38-35 final. Lloyd took top spot in the scoring department, collecting 12 points. Chloe Wilkinson scored all five of Elizabethtown’s OT points on her way to 11 for the game.
BOWLING
After rolling through the opening half of their schedule, the Elizabethtown bowling team has hit a rough patch, suffering a four match slide that started on January 11th and has stretched to January 23rd thanks to a 4-3 loss to McCaskey. Even with the loss, E-town still tallied 3215 pins but that was not enough to overcome a rough third game that gave the win to McCaskey. Derek Deardorff posted a scorching 267 game two, pushing him to a team leading 704 series. The four remaining Bear bowlers all broke the 600series threshold, led by Zach Wentzel and his 649. Declan Lentz added a 637 while Ella Eberle checked in with a 622 and Mason Moore a 603.
RIFLE
The rifle team found success on the range, topping Manheim Central 498-493 on January 24th. The Bears enjoyed three perfect 100s thanks to the work of Kylie Mummau, Parker Bryant and Branden Rain. Rachel Gerberich and Daniel Reigner
completed the top five with matching scores of 99. That victory provided much needed relief for the rifle team with a 784-783 loss to Ephrata on the 19th making it three losses in a row. Luke Turner posted the lone 100 for E-town with Bryant and Adilynn Ginder just missing with their 99s. Kate Kroft checked in with a 98 while Gianni Formica rounded out the top five with a 97. With the match tied at 493 the teams went to extra shooters. Rain and Mummau matched the 97 posted by Formica while Jonathan Koser was the final shooter to count with a 96.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Wins have been difficult to come by for the boys’ basketball team with their 7-11 overall mark standing as evidence. However, when the Bears do win they have come in pairs with victories over Manheim Central and Garden Spot being the most recent set.
Elizabethtown needed an extra session to dispatch Central on the 20th. A 9-3 run in that extra session secured a 69-63 win. E-town started hot leading to a 20-6 lead after one. Manheim began the slow climb back starting in the second, cutting the E-town lead to 29-23 at intermission. Another Central run, this one 18-13, inched the Barons closer, making it a 42-41 game. Manheim Central used a 19-18 edge in that final frame to complete the comeback and force overtime. E-town was able to regain that opening quarter mojo to secure the six-point OT win.
Brenden Lehman topped a quartet of double-digit scorers with 21 points. Braden Cummings (17 points), Noah Locke (15 points) and Caiden Zeager (11 points) also contributed.
No extra basketball was needed in Elizabethtown’s January 24th win over Garden Spot with the Bears using a strong second half to secure a 45-35 win. E-town needed that strong second half thanks to Spot’s 22-13 lead at halftime. The Bears erased the bulk of that deficit in the third with a 168 run which led into a 16-5 fourth quarter edge and the 10-point victory.
Cummings netted 17 in the win, including 12 in the second half. Zeager scored 11 of his 12 points in the second half.
SWIMMING
It was a light week for the E-town swim teams with just one meet on the schedule. The boys won 126-43 over Lampeter-Strasburg while the Lady Bears posted a 98-72 victory.
The boys’ team swept the three relay events starting with the 200-medley relay and ending with a 400-freestyle relay win. Everett Rachael and Reid Gilmore rounded out their meet with two individual wins. Rachael claimed the 100-backstroke and the 200freestyle while Gilmore took the 100-butterfly and the 500-freestyle. Ketchum in the 200 IM, Yohn in the 50-free and Nolan in the 100-breatstroke rounded out the wins.
The Lady Bears were not
able to capture as many events with one relay win added to six solo wins for their 98-72 final. Morgan Conway and Ali Fink collected two solo wins each with Conway doing her work in the 100-breastroke and the 200freestyle while Fink claimed the 100-butterfly and the 200 IM. Fink was joined by Olivia Hirst, Julia Garber and Genna McDonald for a 200-medley relay win. McDonald added a solo win in the 50-freestyle with Tessa Cronin rounding out the wins with a 6:03.21 in the 500-freestyle.
WRESTLING
The Elizabethtown wrestling team bounced back from their Manheim Central loss, topping Donegal 37-25 on January 18th. The Bears enjoyed three forfeits with Austin Reitmeyer (127), Hayden Best (114) and Trenton Smith (107) picking up the easy wins. Additional bonus points came at 189 and 215 where Collin Huggins and Bradley Candy posted pinfall wins. Nathan Thomas added a standard decision at 145 while Aiden Robinson earned a major decision at 160.
The bounce back continued on the 25th with a 42-22 win over Ephrata. Smith (107) and Ryan Hottenstein (285) enjoyed quick forfeit wins and the 12 team points that came with them. Best (114), Francis Burke (121), Reitmeyer (127) and Robinson (160) also collected six team points each thanks to pinfalls. Thomas (139) and Kai Laszakovits (145) added decision victories.

Susquehanna Stage Will Hold Open House
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Susquehanna Stage has a plethora of volunteer opportunities available to members of the community, and the nonprofit wants you to know about them. The organization will hold a drop-in open house called Coffee, Cookies & Committees on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the gallery space at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta.
As Aiden Thomas, education committee chairperson and board member, explained, Susquehanna Stage used to hold a general membership meeting pre-COVID. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the theater has not offered an opportunity for the general public to learn more about the organization or volunteer.
“We liked the idea of hosting something for people to ask questions and find out more about all of the opportunities we have for people to volunteer and become a part of our organization,” Thomas said.
“We have a variety of commit-
tees that meet monthly, and we thought that the beginning of a new year and season was a great time to get some new people involved.”
Volunteer opportunities include helping on the marketing committee, which creates graphics, runs social media accounts, designs print advertising and updates the organization’s website. The development committee leads fundraising, seeking out donors, advertisers and sponsors to fund the theater’s mission. Volunteers with the education committee develop year-round arts education programming for people of all ages, including summer camps, and the events committee manages building rentals, opening night receptions and Susquehanna Stage’s participation in community events throughout the year. Additional committees include the building committee and the capital planning committee.
“In addition to these volunteer opportunities, we have
more show-specific opportunities that take less time commitment, including set building/construction, costumes

She has been a volunteer with Susquehanna Stage since its inception in 2009 and said it’s a great place to get involved in the community. “Since that time, my parents, siblings and even my grandparents have taken part in some aspect of the organization,” she noted.

In Christian art, a square halo identified a living person who was presumed to be a saint. This square halo concept is also the focus for the winter 2023 art show at the Square Halo Gallery within The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster.
The all-ages open arts invitational that runs through the end of February features work from artists from New York, Texas, and England, as well as many local artists. Any work containing a square was considered for the exhibit.
The show is in conjunction with the 2023 Square Halo Conference on Friday, Feb. 17, and Saturday, Feb. 18, titled “Ordinary Saints-Cre-
ativity, Collaboration & Community.” This year’s conference celebrates the 25th anniversary of Square Halo Books, an independent publisher of works that present contextually sensitive biblical studies and practical instruction consistent with the doctrines of the Reformation. To learn more about the conference with keynote speaker Malcolm Guite at https://square halobooks.com/conferences# /2023-conference.
Future 2023 exhibits include an Irish-themed show in March and April that will display printmaking from two new books by
Ned Bustard: “Saint Patrick the Forgiver” from IVP Kids and “33: Reflections on the Gospel of Saint John” from Square Halo Books. In May, the gallery will welcome select student artists from Messiah University, and the summer show will focus on the art of a pioneer in the art and faith movement of the past several decades, Sandra Bowden.
Square Halo Gallery is open from 6 to 9 p.m. on First Fridays, by appointment, and during events at The Trust. To learn more, visit squarehalobooks.com.

friends along the way as we take a break from the winter blues one venue at a time,” she said. Each venue will feature exclusive food and drink specials for the tour.
Venues on the crawl will be Pine Creek Spirits, located at 505B N. Market St.; Lucky Ducks Bar & Grille, 45 N. Market St.; Funk Brewing, 28 S.
Market St.; and Moo-Duck Brewery, 79 S. Wilson Ave. Participants will be assigned to one of four groups which will determine their starting location and where to park for the tour. A shuttle will provide transportation between stops. Group One will begin at Pine Creek Spirits, while Group Two will begin at Lucky Ducks Bar & Grille. Group Three will start at Funk Brewing, and the tour will kick off for Group Four at Moo-Duck Brewery. Participants may spend as little or as much time as they want at each location, although the event will end at 9 p.m. to allow time for people to take the bus back to their starting location and their parked car.
Participants must be at least 21 years old to participate in the event, and a discounted price will be offered for designated drivers. There will also be separate prices for Chamber members and for nonmembers. Tickets will include the shuttle transportation, a wristband for food and drink specials, a mug and an Elizabethtown scarf.
Grove noted that the event is not a fundraiser, but instead it simply offers something unique to do to fight the winter blues. “We just wanted to provide a fun winter break,” she said. “The venues are all Chamber members, which is why they were chosen. … Let loose and party like there’s snow tomorrow.”
Tickets are limited for the tour, so Grove encourages early purchasing. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit https:// elizabethtowncoc.com.
