The first cookbook was called “Making Memories,” and Nolt said the new cookbook will be titled “Making Memories II.” Although the titles are similar, the books will be different, Nolt noted. “We want to make this cookbook bigger than we originally thought we would,” she stated. “We originally planned only to ask for recipes from fair participants, but then we decided to appeal to the wider community for The Elizabethtown Fair is seeking recipes recipes.” BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Making A Difference With Milkweed BY CATHY MOLITORIS
istening to a news blurb in 2018, Cindy Leonard couldn’t believe what she heard. “It was a story about the decline of the monarch butterfly,” she recalled. The story detailed how the lack of milkweed, the sole food source for monarch caterpillars, had led to a 90% decline in monarchs over the last 20 years. “I have a quarter-mile lane on my property, and at the time, it was lined with milkweed,” she said. “I went outside and looked, and there was really none left. I was astonished because I was so oblivious. This had happened without me noticing.” Since hearing that story, Leonard has focused her efforts on helping the monarch butterfly. As the owner of Milkweed 4 Monarchs in Elizabethtown, she grows 38 species of milkweed and offers both seeds and plants for sale, encouraging others to grow the plants at their homes. “Milkweed is something anyone can grow,” she stated. “Even if you don’t own land, you can grow it on a pot on your deck.”

milkweed into the gardens of as many people as possible. She also enjoys educating customers about the importance of milkweed. “People don’t understand how important milkweed is for the monarch population,” she stated. “The adult butterflies can get nectar from any flower, but the baby caterpillars can only eat milkweed. If there’s no milkweed, there won’t be any more monarchs. … I think any time we’re looking at a species that is declining to the point of extinction, we should all care.” Despite the global impact on the monarchs, Leonard emphasizes that the issue has a local solution, and she encourages everyone to help. “If we all grow milkweed, we can make a difference, one milkweed plant at a time,” she remarked. Leonard’s milkweed farm is located at 8741 Elizabethtown Road. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment at other times. A lifelong gardener, Leonard remembers playing with milkweed pods as a child. “I never really gave the plant any thought,” she said. “I was familiar with common milkweed. It was all around, growing everywhere.” After learning about the plight of the monarch, she discovered that Pennsylvania has 11 native milkweed species and that there are 115 species throughout the United States. While she sells plants and seeds locally, she also ships seeds across the country, hoping to offer native species to people coast to coast. At her home, she grows milkweed with flowers in a variety of colors and offers a milk jug greenhouse kit, complete with seeds, soil and instructions. From mid-May through June 1, she holds an annual milkweed plant sale, and she offers milkweed garden tours during the last two weeks of June. In July, customers receive a free monarch caterpillar with a milkweed plant purchase. From September through the spring months, she offers milkweed seeds for sale. She keeps her prices low because of her desire to get

She also noted that the cookbook will be filled with more than just food ideas. “We will have a page with a brief history of the fair,” she stated. “We’re also hoping to include recipes beyond food, for things like kids’ Play-Doh.” For her part, Nolt will be submitting her mother’s spaghetti sauce recipe and a recipe for Jell-O salad. She noted that other recipes could be for dishes in any of the categories typically found in a cookbook, along with foods entered for competition at the fair, such as apple dumplings, pies, cakes, cookies, candy and jam.

Genna McDonald, left, and Tessa Cronin swam legs in the Bears’ 148.68, 200 Freestyle Relay win in the E-town girls’ 90-80, nonleague victory at Lampeter-Strasburg on January 25.
(100-butterfly), Rudy (100-backstroke) and Runnels (100-breaststoke) picked up the final three victories. The Lady Bears added seven individual event wins to their relay sweep led by Stephanie Hall (200 and 500 free), Kapcsos (50 and 100 free) and Morgan Conway (200 IM and 100 breaststroke) with two wins each. Ali Fink slipped in a 100-butterfly victory to finish the meet. BOWLING The bowling team had the rare back-to-back matches against the same opponent, Warwick, on January 19th and 24th with the Bears posting a pair of 5-2 victories. The same five bowlers were live in both matches with Daniel Eberle going 681 and 732 to enjoy the top spot. Zach Wentzel added a 634 to his 708 while Ayden Pope scored a 675 and a 625. Alaina Telenko chipped in with a 662 and a 613 series while Derek Deardorff finished with a 618 and 649.
WRESTLING The wrestling team is in the middle of a rough patch, following a 3130 loss to Central on January 13th with another heartbreaker on the 24th. That one was a 34-33 setback to ELCO where five of the Bears six wins were by fall but it was not enough to outlast the Raiders. Hayden Best (106), Ryan Findlay (126), Aiden Robinson (152), Jake Rudy (160) and Hayden Hoover (189) accounted for those five falls while Nathan Thomas (132) managed a 14-8 decision for the final win. Elizabethtown was able to split the two losses with a 35-27 win over Donegal on the 19th. E-town picked up three wins via fall and three via decision, adding in two major decisions to earn the 12-point win. Findlay (126), Robinson (152) and Best (106) enjoyed the pinfalls with Nick Smith (138), Rudy (160) and Austin

Unlike most sports, high school swimming is not just about winning. It is also about picking up valuable second, third and fourth place finishes and the team points that come with them. “Our depth has taken us really far this season. Being able to score seconds and thirds and fourths in races does wonders for us,” said head coach Chad Houck. “We’ve got a great group of seniors who really set the tone along with an impressive freshman class who is really following their lead.” A perfect example came on January 25th where the girls topped Lampeter-Strasburg 90-80 while the boy’s rolled 108-58 with the two sides combing for 11 wins over 24 events. Morgan Conway (100 back, 200 IM) fronted the Lady Bears while picking up a 200-free relay win with help from Genevieve McDonald, Tessa Cronin, and Sierra Kapcsos. Cronin (50-free) and McDonald (100-breastroke) added solos wins while Stephanie Hall earned the final victory in the 200-free. On the boy’s side it was the ‘Rachael’ Show starring Wyatt and Everett Rachael. The duo accounted for all three solo wins as well as taking part in both relay victories. Riley Runnels and Nathan Yohn were the other half of the winning 200-medlay and 200-freestyle relay teams while
Wyatt added a win in the 100-breaststroke. Everett claimed the 100-backstroke and the 500-freestyle where his 5:01.05 set a new school record, breaking his five-day old mark. Of course, winning makes it all much easier as with E-town’s victories over Conestoga Valley on the 20th. Elizabethtown claimed 20 of the 24 events with a total of four top three sweeps to cruise to wins of 123-45 for the boys and 119-46 for the girls. The Bears swept the relay events on the boy’s side thanks to the work of Jacob Rudy, Wyatt Rachael, Mitchell Garber, Runnels, Ethan Hall, Everett Rachael, Niko Houck, Tyler Henry, and Trevor Nolen. For the girl’s it was Lilly Rutkowski, Madi Conway, Charlotte Hershey, Kapcsos, Morgan Conway, McDonald, Rene Oltmans, Stephanie Hall, Cronin, and Julia Garber helping in the relay sweep. The star of the solo wins was Everett Rachael who set a short-lived new school record in the 500-free. “Everett is a great freshman swimmer on his way to doing great things in this sport,” said Houck. “We’ve used him primarily as a sprinter, but he’s capable of winning every race we put him in.” Wyatt Rachael led a sweep in the 50-free while Carter Ketchum did the same in the 200-free. Ethan Hall taking the 100-free while Nevin Rutherford

Warwick took some wind from the Bears sails. Against McCaskey it was the Gilhool show with Patrick dropping 20 points and Matthew adding 18 to help the Bears post a 49-47 win. E-town used a 19-9 run over the final eight minutes to steal the win. One night later the Bears were unable to keep pace with Palmyra, leading to a 59-37 setback. The Cougars controlled all four frames leading to the 22-point final margin. Patrick Gilhool netted 16-points and Techeal Gonquoi added 15-points January 25th sent the Bears to Lititz where Warwick survived E-town’s fourth quarter push to collect the 62-58 win. Elizabethtown trailed 49-37 heading into the final frame where they outscored the Warriors 21-13, leaving the Bears four points short of their comeback bid. Patrick Gilhool’s 21-points led the way. E-town used an 11-3 run through the third to turn a onepoint halftime margin into a ninepoint cushion heading into the final frame. Palmyra posted a 10-7 edge in the fourth to set the final at 32-26. Ainsley Raybold netted a team high nine points. Elizabethtown made it three in a row with a 36-26 triumph over Warwick on the 25th. Brad grew up in a tiny town in western Oklahoma where hunting and fishing was a way of life. However, Brad didn’t give his life to Christ until he was a sophomore in high school. The Lord called Brad into youth ministry and for the last 12 years Brad served in Oklahoma as a youth pastor as a licensed and ordained minister. Brad used his love for the outdoors to minister to students as well as others. Brad founded final Descent Outdoors as an outreach in his church. It grew from that into a national TV show that is in 40 million homes in North America.

attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a memory verse; songs; games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is called “The Early Church - God’s Power in Action.” The program has a rotating six-year curriculum. Volunteers are an integral part of the program. “We try to have one adult for every six children,” said Kilgore, who noted that volunteers are trained to use the curriculum. Kilgore praised helpers who have been part of the program the last two years. “The volunteers who have stuck with us through COVID have been really wonderful,” she said. “The kids have needed to talk more.” She pointed out that volunteering can be rewarding to those who take the opportunity to help guide young lives. “We want to be encouraging to kids and families right now,” she said. “It is a blessing to us to be able to do that.” Kilgore noted that she is grateful for God’s provision over the last few years. “Financially, God has been bringing support,” she said. “He has kept us going in better ways than we could have imagined.” Those who wish to sign a child up for a Good News Club may visit www.ceflancaster.org and click on the registration tab to find the elementary school where their child would attend. Individuals who wish to volunteer may contact CEF through the website or call 717569-5412.
Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will host a Music by the Fireplace bluegrass jam on Sunday, Feb. 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a stringed instrument. The program is open to the public, but preregistration is required by contacting 717-9643808 or governordick@hot mail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.
