Support Group Will Offer Resources For Parents

“Life is hard and so is parenting,” said Ashley Joiner, who has two teens in the Elizabethtown Area School District. “We don’t have to do this alone.”

With that in mind, Joiner has created It Takes a Village, a support group for parents of struggling teens. The group will hold its first meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at The Lodge at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 121 Mechanics Alley, Elizabethtown.

Joiner got the idea for the support group as a participant in a self-expression and leadership program. “Part of the program is we are to create a community project that we are passionate about and enroll our community members into participating and ultimately becoming leaders in the project,”

Hitting All The Right Notes

Music is a major part of Emma Creason’s life, and now the Elizabethtown Area High School senior will get to showcase her talents on a national level. She’ll be representing Pennsylvania in the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE) National Conference Choir at OAKE’s national conference in Jacksonville, Fla., in March.

Emma learned about the national choir during an internship she had in Nicole Witman’s music class at East High Street Elementary School. “One day, Mrs. Witman told me about this audition opportunity and said that she’d help me prepare to submit my video audition,” Emma recalled. “I just thought, ‘I want to audition and see what happens.’ I thought it was a long shot and just thought it would be worth a try.”

For the audition, Emma had to sing a variety of complicated patterns using solfege, the language vocalists use to indicate pitch. “It was really hard because I had to memorize all the notes and sing in a cappella with no accompaniment,” she said. “I also had to sing ‘America the Beautiful’

she said. “I have two teenagers in my home, one of whom has struggled tremendously with mental health. It’s been a rough road for our family. I wanted a support

a cappella to demonstrate musicality.” Emma found out she had been selected when she received an email in November. “I remember being so shocked and excited,” she said. “I immediately told my family I made it and called my grandparents and extended family. … I remember having this moment where I kind of reflected on the fact that I’m a nationally ranked vocalist. Joiner said she understands where parents of struggling teens are coming from and believes everyone can benefit from support. “I

Each meeting of the support group will be peer-led with occasional guest speakers or professionals to guide the conversation, Joiner said. “The intent is that this will be a place where parents can be together in person to talk about what is happening in their lives, a safe space to give and receive support,” she explained. “Research shows that support groups provide healthy parenting skills, an increased sense of empowerment and a feeling of belonging.”

Joiner said it’s important for parents to know they have an outlet. “Our world stops when our

The National Conference Choir is part of the annual OAKE national conference, which features programs from educators, clinicians and conductors, culminating in a performance from the students who have been selected to be part of the choir.

Emma is no stranger to winning accolades for her vocals. She has ranked among the top five vocalists twice in PMEA’s All-District Choir, PMEA’s All-Region Choir and the LLMEA All-County Choir. She will audition for All-State honors at the regional festival later this spring. Emma sings alto 2 in the festival and competitive circuits as well as in concert choir at school, but in the school’s Chamber Choir, she sings tenor.

She said she’s loved music all her life. Her parents, Joseph and Jennifer Creason of Elizabethtown, have told her stories about how she learned the words and music to complex songs as a young child. “Singing in the most emotional form of music making there is, because you are using your voice,

not a separate instrument,” Emma stated. “There’s a vulnerability there that makes it such a moving experience for the singer and the audience. People are so profoundly impacted by singing in a way that is unique to vocal performance.”

As she prepares to graduate this spring, Emma is planning to continue to pursue her passion for singing as a music therapist, focused on young children. “I love music therapy because it’s health care … just using music as a tool to heal,” she remarked. “I’ve been volunteering at Masonic Health Care Center’s music therapy program, and I absolutely love it.”

community, providing a place for women of all ages and church affiliations to fellowship and grow together in our relationship with Jesus,” said Bonnie Messick, NSAC coordinator. “Over 35 years of ministry, culture and society have changed, but this group offers women a relaxed and welcoming environment providing a sense of stability and community that is not as common today as when the program began.”

NSAC provides free child care for infants to prekindergarten children, so it’s especially beneficial for young mothers as a way to enjoy some adult interaction, Messick noted. However, the program is open to women of all ages.

“NSAC is not part of a larger program and is run independently by a committee of women who attend Chiques Church,” she explained.

“The women attending (NSAC gatherings) come from many area churches, and (there are) even those with no current church affiliation.”

NSAC meetings begin with informal fellowship time with snacks, coffee and tea, followed by worship music organized and led by committee members, announcements and a brief devotional. “Following devotions, we welcome prayer requests and praises as we share with the group and join in prayer,” Messick said. “After prayer time, the morning’s speaker is introduced and shares on their topic for 45 minutes to an hour.”

Speakers range from professionals in the community to church members providing personal testi-

monies, and each year, NSAC also invites a local nonprofit organization to speak on its ministry during one of the meetings. “Each season NSAC features a new theme, which guides the speakers in their topic selections,” Messick shared. “This year the program is based on the theme ‘Created.’ We haven’t been created by chance, but with purpose. God has created us in His image to praise, honor and glorify Him.” While each speaker’s style is different, they all share the core beliefs of the Christian faith and most use Scripture as a basis for their talks, she said.

Above all, NSAC offers women the opportunity to take a break from their busy schedules to enjoy fellowship with other believers while being inspired by the speakers. “Neighbors Sharing and Caring is all about relationships,” said Messick. “It’s a great way to develop relationships with other women of all ages as well as grow in your relationship with Jesus.”

No sign-up or preregistration is required to attend NSAC. NSAC meets in the fellowship hall at Chiques Church. In the case of inclement weather, NSAC follows Manheim Central School District, and if school is delayed or virtual, NSAC is canceled for the morning. Upcoming NSAC meetings will feature Katie Leaman speaking about the organization Love INC on Feb. 14 and the choice of a Bible study or freezer meal preparation class on Feb. 28. It’s Fastnacht Time At Holy Trinity

Making fastnachts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church is an exact science. Sort of. There are specific steps required in making the treats, but because each one is handmade, no two are alike, said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at the church.

“There is a correct way to roll the dough,” Mahan explained. “It’s not like rolling dough at home. You don’t flour the dough.

You only flour the board and the pin. You don’t turn the dough over. You relax the dough by lifting if off the board.” The dough rises twice - once overnight before it’s rolled out and once after rolling - before the treats are fried. She noted that the resulting fastnacht is unique, adding, “I’ve never had any that taste like ours.”

Holy Trinity’s annual fastnacht sale will begin on Monday, Feb. 20. Sales will continue Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Wednesday, Feb. 22,

followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 15.

The fastnacht sale started as a project to raise funds to build a new church. While the current bake will produce more than 5,000 dozen fastnachts, the sale began as a small endeavor, noted volunteer Kathleen Lutz.

“It started out with only one or two days of sales,” said Lutz, who has been volunteering with the bake since the 1970s. While the original recipe is the same, she noted that some things have been tweaked. “We’ve found easier ways to do things over the years,”

Marietta Will Hold Our Forest Volunteer Days

If you’ve enjoyed the beautiful trees along the Northwest River Trail in Marietta, you can now take an active role in helping to maintain that beauty. The Marietta Shade Tree Committee is looking for volunteers to help with its new initiative, Our Forest Volunteer Days. Volunteers will be asked to cut English ivy and other invasive vines away from the base of trees along the trail.

“We’re holding one volunteer day per month, on the last Saturday of the month through April, focused on cutting as best as we can and removing as much of the invasive and aggressive vines that have climbed their way to the top of the trees,” said Brandon Tennis, who is leading the project. Removing the vines will not only decrease the overall weight in the tree canopy, he stated, but will also decrease competition for resources such as sunlight that the trees face from the presence of the vines. “Right now, the vines are thriving while the trees are compensating,” Tennis remarked. “We want to flip that.” Volunteers will cut the vines at the base, so the vines at the top of the trees will die off, he noted.

Sessions will be held on Saturdays, Feb. 25, March 25 and April 29, from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should meet on the trail at the south end of Chestnut Street in Marietta.

The project is an initiative Tennis brought to the Shade Tree Committee. “We’re really fortunate that our borough has its own forest,” noted Tennis, who is a natural lands planning and management expert. “Everybody loves the trail,

the Marietta section in particular, and it’s our responsibility to maintain the health of the forest that surrounds the trail. The health of the forest equates to the beauty of it.”

Tennis came up with the idea for the volunteer project after noticing the overgrowth of invasive plants while exploring the trail with his family. “We are on the trail every day,” he said. “Through my work, I can never simply enjoy a trail. I

always have an eye on the issues. I had been concerned about the health of the borough’s floodplain forest, and species removal is almost always the first step in habitat restoration.”

He noted that no experience is necessary to help with the vine removal, adding that he plans to bring his own children, who are 4 and 7 years old, to help. “Anybody can do this,” he remarked. “We are asking people who are able to bring their own tools, including hand pruners, loppers or a pruning saw. I’ll be there to give instructions, but it’s pretty basic volunteer work. You need as many hands as possible to help with this.”

For more information on volunteering, contact Lillian Hill at 717-309-3309. Volunteers do not need to sign up but can just show up on the day of the activity.

Fastnacht Time frompg 4

she said. “Everybody has good ideas. Some work and some don’t.”

The sale is still a fundraiser for the church, with proceeds used for parish projects and to support Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School. Members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia also assist with the sale, said St. Peter member George Overmeyer. “This is a ‘fun’ raiser more than a fundraiser,” he added. “We all have a lot of fun.”

Volunteers are needed to help with the bakes, with shifts available starting at 4 a.m. for people who want to help roll the dough. Experience is not required, said volunteer Karen Sahd. “There’s always somebody around who knows the correct way to do things,” she commented.

Mahan noted that working at 4 a.m. is not required. “People can give an hour of time or help when

they can,” she said. “We need second shift people and cleanup people, too.”

Fastnachts are available by the dozen, either glazed or plain. The committee members estimate that 75% of orders are for glazed treats. “You don’t even need to look in the bag to know if they are glazed or not,” volunteer Jim Knapp said. “It’s evident by the weight of the bag because we use so much glaze.”

Orders will be taken for fastnachts online only until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinitycolumbiapa.com.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, first-served basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, call the parish office at 717684-2711.

Zeager Drills Six Treys in Win Over Solanco

When describing the 2022-2023 boys’ basketball season the phrase ‘too little, too late’ appears to fit. The Bears sit at 8-12 on the year after splitting games against Warwick and Solanco with the most likely outcome for the season being a near miss when it comes to the postseason. E-town sits just four spots outside the District 3-5A postseason, but a sluggish 5-10 start most likely made the climb a little too steep.

Elizabethtown’s 57-37 win over Solanco came on the 31st with Caiden Zeager drilling six from long range on his way to 24 points. The Bears posted a scoring edge in three of the four frames while holding the Golden Mules to single digit point totals in those three quarters. Braden Cummings chipped in with 10 points.

Elizabethtown found themselves on the opposite end of the final in their January 26th clash with Warwick that went to the Warriors by a 61-48 final. E-town started slow and trailed 17-5 after the opening quarter. From there the game

played out even with E-town keeping pace with Warwick, 44-43. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. Cummings led a trio of double-digit scorers with 16. Zeager (11 points) and Branden Lehman (10 points) followed.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team took a break from the tail end of their regular season to get started on the postseason with a trip to Manheim Township for the L-L Championships on January 27th and 28th. The result was a seventh-place team finish.

“Generally speaking, we wrestled well. Of course, we would always want to do better but we had good effort in a tough tournament,” said head coach Mike Sernoffsky.

The Bears closed strong with five of the seven medalists winning their final match. Aiden Robinson highlighted that bunch with his bronze medal run at 152. E-town enjoyed a trio of fifth place finishers with Francis Burke (121), Austin Reitmeyer (127) and Nathan Thomas (139) collecting those medals. Hayden Best (114) was the

final Bear to win his last match, claiming seventh place. Elizabethtown’s final two medalists were Ryan Findley at 145 and Bradley Candy at 285.

E-town kept their post season train moving with a trip to Central Dauphin on the 31st. The Bears dropped their opening bout of the District 3-3A Team Championship to Spring Grove by a 52-16 final. Elizabethtown mustered just four wins starting with Burke at 121. Reitmeyer (127), Findley (152) and Robinson (160) claimed the remaining three wins.

BOWLING

Bears snagged the team point for total pin count, edging the Mountaineers 3164-3094 but sluggish first and third games allowed Ephrata to steal the match. Wentzel (696), Moore (659) and Eberle (643) all broke the 600-pin barrier while both Deardorff (587) and Lentz (579) fell just short.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The slow ride to the end of the girls’ basketball season hit two more bumps in the form of losses to Warwick and Solanco, putting the Lady Bears at 3-17 on the season.

RIFLE

The rifle team continued their late season surge, topping Garden Spot and Wilson to improve to 7-5 on the year. Elizabethtown used perfect matches from both Parker Bryant and Rachel Gerberich to slip by Spot 496-494 on the 26th. Branden Rain and Adilynn Ginder added matching 99s while Isabelle Overdorf finished with a 98.

Oysters in Season

The 2022-2023 season continues to go sideways for the bowling team with losses to Conestoga Valley and Ephrata making it six straight setbacks for the Bears. Elizabethtown opened strong against CV, taking the first game 973-940 but the Buckskins took over from there to secure the 5-2 win on January 30th. Mason Moore was the top Bear with a 638 series. Derek Deardorff (613) and Zach Wentzel (604) also broke the 600 barrier with Ella Eberle (589) the last to bowl all three games. Declan Lentz and Billy Dougherty completed the match.

Elizabethtown was even closer to snapping their slide on the 27th, falling to Ephrata by a 4-3 final. The

Elizabethtown was able to keep Solanco close on the 31st but ultimately dropped the 38-28 final. All of the damage came in the opening half where the Golden Mares enjoyed a 20-10 edge. The two sides played even through the second half, leaving Solanco’s 10-point halftime lead to stand. Taryn Hummer finished with nine points and Callie Love-Morris seven.

The Lady Bears were not as fortunate against Warwick on the 26th. The Lady Warriors held a scoring edge in all four quarters leading to the 39-19 final. Only four players managed to score for E-town with Jayden Lloyd posting a team-high 11 points. Chloe Wilkinson added four points while both Emily Williams and Olivia Martin had two points.

E-town welcomed Wilson on the 31st and the result was an easy 494-481 victory. Ginder was the lone perfect shooter on the day but the Bears did get two near misses from Rain and Luke Turner. Bryant and Daniel Reigner rounded out the top five with their 98s.

SWIMMING

The Elizabethtown swimming teams wrapped up their regular season slate and with a win in their season finale the boy’s team secured the Section Two crown. “I’m really proud of both squads,” said head coach Chad Houck, “We set out this year with some pretty big goals and we’ve met one of them with the boys’ victory.”

The victory Houck referenced was the 87-83 win over Ephrata. “It took every bit of work, strategy, and execution to top a team like Ephrata and every single boy played a part in getting Etown to the top of Section II,” Houck added.

The proof to back Houck’s words come in the form of just two victories for E-town. Jack Ketchum claimed the 100-backstroke and was joined by Everett Rachael, Jared Louie and Reid Gilmore to take the 400-free relay. The Lady Bears also managed just two wins in their meet against Ephrata but ended up on the wrong side of a 99-71 final. Morgan Conway (100breaststoke) and Ali Fink (100-butterfly) were responsible for the two wins.

Both sides were able to take out Lancaster Catholic on the 26th with the boy’s winning 126-31 and the girls 132-30. The boys took all three relay races with only Ketchum (100-backstroke and 200-free) posting multiple solo wins. Rachael (100-free), Gilmore (500-free), Louie (100-butterfly), Carter Ketchum (200 IM) and Logan Conway (100-breaststroke) all earned firsts.

For the Lady Bears it was a similar rundown with Elizabethtown sweeping the three relay events. Morgan Conway posted the lone double with her wins in the 100breaststroke and 50-free. Tessa Cronin (100-free), Fink (100-butterfly), Olivia Hirst (100-backstroke), Julia Garber (500-free) and Annale Nguyen (200-free)

Sweetheart Meal Will Benefit Mt. Hope

After Don Good passed away in December, his four children described their father as having lived a life of “calling, connection, commitment and caring.” Good, a farmer and pastor, spent his last days living at Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, where the staff gave back to the man who had been instrumental in volunteering with the facility’s capital campaign to raise money for renovations. “Mt. Hope cared for Don, opening a space for his family to tenderly sit by his bedside, holding his hand, sharing memories, loving him and releasing him to heaven,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope.

Stories like Don’s are not unique at Mt. Hope, where residents are treated with love and care regardless of their changing circumstances and life situations. You can support the mission of Mt. Hope by participating in the Sweetheart To-Go Banquet, with proceeds to benefit the Mt. Hope community. The meal will be offered for curbside pickup on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBC - Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. Each meal will include barbecue firegrilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, applesauce, a dinner roll with butter and a dessert.

Mt. Hope is a 50-bed nonprofit skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center with a mission of caring for residents regardless of their ability to pay. “It’s a sweet place in our community that ensures our residents have a place to call home when situations arise where care is needed,” Wilson said. “Many of our residents lack the financial resources to cover the cost of their care, and the gap is growing in what residents can afford to pay versus what state assistance, Medicaid, reimburses for the daily rate of care.” Donations and tickets to dinners such as the Sweetheart To-Go

GOTR Helps Girls Reach Developmental Finish Line

All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.

That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective best foot forward. GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.

“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster. “Girls are facing so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships, resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”

“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”

West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school, community program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving forward,” she said.

GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall

seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.

“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.

GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.

This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.

“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household name.”

Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.

Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.
