Dancers warm up at ExHaLTT Performing Arts Academy.
Finding healing and hope through the arts
A
t E x H a LT T Pe r fo r m ing Arts Academy, Jill Thomasson offers opportunities for people to express themselves through dance, music and more, all with a faith base. “Our tagline is, ‘Where the ar ts thrive, the soul comes alive,’” she stated. As the nonprofit organization blossomed this past year, Thomasson faced a personal struggle, but she hasn’t let it stop her vision of bringing the arts to everyone. Thomasson was just putting the finishing touches on the studio’s move to the second floor
of The Elizabeth, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, in August, when she received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Within days of her diagnosis, she also received word that ExHaLTT had been approved for its official 501(c)(3) designation. “I am an overcomer,” she stated. “Nothing was going to deter me in my mission. To get hit with this diagnosis was really tough, but the ExHaLTT community just rallied around me.” Thomasson had surgery and began chemotherapy, but she continued to move forward with her studio, starting the season in October after completing
extensive renovations to the new space. The studio offers classes for children and adults in hip-hop dance, modern dance, creative movement, musical theater and adult fitness. Along with classes, Thomasson wants the studio to offer people a chance to get out into the community and give back through the “Dancers Make a Difference” initiative. The organization held food drives in November and December and performed for a Valentine’s Day tea at Paramount Senior Living at Lancaster County in Maytown. Thomasson recently began

Bringing God’s Word to the stage
BY JEFF FALK
It’s one thing to hear the Word. It’s one thing to read the Word. It’s one thing to process the Word. But it’s another thing to experience the Word live. Piercing Word, headquartered at 1821 Oregon Pike, Suite 210, Lancaster, presents Scripture passages from the English Standard Version Bible word for word through dramatic and musical performances. The nonprofit’s mission is to “ignite passion for
the Word of God in the heart of the church.” “ We d o n’t j u s t p e r fo r m Scripture; we challenge people,” said Piercing Word’s founder and executive director, Aaron House. “Scripture is our script. The Word of God is so powerful, and not just for the people on stage, but also for the people who come. Their lives will be changed when they come. It’s not just another entertainment. It’s a life-changing opportunity.” Piercing Word will br ing its unique form of spiritual See Stage pg 2 R102845

Two months ago, Larry A. Derr of Mount Joy was installed as the 125th Right Worshipful Grand Master of the Masons of Pennsylvania. The role is an honor, he said, and offers him an opportunity to promote an organization that’s had a major influence on his life. “B eing the 125th Grand Master means you are a part of a very long tradition of service, one I am extremely honored to continue,” he said. “I have been a member for more than 50 years, so Freemasonry has been a significant part of my life and significantly shaped the man I am today. This is a way for me to give back for the lifelong learning, friendships and experiences this journey has afforded me.” In this role, Derr is responsible for leading the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, which oversees 388 lodges and approximately 87,000 members across the

Stage from pg 1 e n te r tainment to L ancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, for four double feature presentations in the middle of February. Piercing Word will present “Stewardship” and “Passion: The Musical” on Friday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. The stage performance is expected to take 90 minutes to present. Admission will be handled on a pay-asyou-will basis. “The beauty of the music and the truth of the words create a powerful piece,” said House, adding that the performance should impact everyone present, whether t h e y re g u l a r l y a t t e n d church or not. Framed as a board game, “Stewardship” features t h re e p e r fo r m e r s a n d focuses on the importance of making good use of everything God has given us. “‘Stewardship’ is a fun, fast-paced commentary on how to use our God-given
resources, presented in the form of a board game,” said House. “It’s like Monopoly on stage. There are two players and a game master.” “ T he game master is teaching them how to play the game, and everyone gets to see how things unfold,” continued House. “We see evidence of a lack of stewardship in our lives on a regular basis, and for whatever the reasons, we end up not fulfilling God’s call. He’s entrusted us with these talents, and He’s calling us to use them for a higher purpose. We can multiply these resources in so many ways.” “Passion: The Musical” recounts the events preceding and immediately following the death of Jesus Christ. “‘Passion: The Musical’ is presented in a modern, urban style and depicts the Last Supper, the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus, compiled from all four Gospels,” House said. “It’s a really powerful presentation of the events of

He also serves as vice chairman of the Mount Joy Borough Water Authority. But it’s the Masons who truly have Derr’s heart, and he loves that the organization is an international fraternity with a centuries-old history of service. “What I find incredible is that as a member, you can travel to … just about any country in the world and visit a Masonic lodge,” he said. “I have heard countless stories of members who have encountered challenges while traveling across the countr y or abroad and received assistance from a local lodge or Mason. I’ve also heard numerous stories of members accidentally meeting a fellow brother we call fellow members our ‘brothers,’ as that is how we treat one another - and building an instant friendship based on an innate trust based on our shared values.” scan this code for more local news townlively.com

offering a social dance series featuring country line dancing, swing dance and salsa classes. “These are classes for community members,” she said. “The end goal isn’t a performance, like our academy dancers, but it’s focused on learning and having fun.” ExHaLT T will host a Spring Fling Festival fundraiser on Friday, April 5, at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown, and will hold a musical intensive program this summer, culminating in a performance of “Newsies Jr.,” at Elizabethtown Area High School in August. Thomasson is also in the midst of forming a choir through ExHaLT T, and she just donated her own piano to the studio. Ever ything she does at ExHaLTT is designed to help people connect with themselves and each other, she said. “When people invest in artistic endeavors, there is another layer of their whole being that comes to a place of expression they don’t get to when t h e y j u s t g o t h ro u g h
their daily lives,” she said. “Sometimes, people don’t start to come alive until they are involved in expressing themselves, whether that’s through dance or vocal instruction or another form of art.” Through her own experience this past year, Thomasson learned firsthand how important the arts are to well-being, and she’s thankful she has had a community to lean on. “People say to me, ‘I can’t believe you have this much energy and you just had chemo,’” she said. “But I’m just grateful. Do I like having this happen to me? I would never choose to draw this card, but I believe God knew I would be going through this, and He’s had my hand as I’ve walked through this. The ExHaLTT community has been with me, too. I have a a deep, deep sense of purpose in what I’m doing that keeps me moving forward, keeps me excited and keeps my energy level up.” To learn more about E x H a LT T, v i s i t w w w .exhalttdancecompany.org.

Satisfying Customers for 44 Years
Have you ever wanted to restore your home, but you weren’t sure where to start? Or maybe you’d like to learn how to research the history of your home. Your questions can be answered at a program presented by the Maytown Historical Society. “ T his Old House … Maytown Style” will feature local resident Jim Leonard, who will share his journey in researching and restoring his historic home. The program will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the East Donegal Township Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. Jim and his wife, Diane, have lived in their house in “Chickentown” for more than 50 years. Jim noted that no one has been able to provide a full answer for how the area of East Donegal Township got its unique name. Jim has been able to trace the histor y of his property, finding deeds dating to the 1860s and an appearance of the original brick house on a Marietta map from the 1850s. In 2005, Jim began the process of adding on a two-story log structure. “We wanted a little more room. After living in a house for 51 years, you just start to fill it up,” said Jim, who noted that the couple enjoys collecting antiques, period furniture and early folk art. He started the lengthy process of finding materials for the construction, including logs, windows, doors and f looring that were period appropriate. Construction on the

Jim Leonard Doug Seaman
Local man seeks kidney donor Doug Seaman, a local man with kidney disease, is seeking a kidney donor. Seaman is a 61-year resident of East Hanover Township in Dauphin County. Due to the number of people on the transplant list, at this time, it may take five or more years to obtain a kidney for transplant, noted Seaman. For more information about becoming a kidney donor, call UPMC Harrisburg at 717-231-8757 or Hershey Medical Center at 717-531-6092. Individuals may also search for Doug Seaman on Facebook.
Jim Leonard will discuss the construction of an addition on his house in East Donegal Township.
addi t ion b e gan in the summer of 2006 and was completed in 2008. “One of the things that really guided us in the process, once you find old b uilding mater i al, you have to use what you have,” he said. “ We had some flexibility in some things like where do you place the windows or where do you place the doors, but we were also somewhat limited.” Jim did a lot of research into authentic materials and then used local contractors, including Sload Brothers in Marietta and Andy Mylin, a stone mason from Maytown. “It was a fascinating journey to watch the people who did the log work and watch the stone mason do his work,” Jim s a i d . “ We w e r e n e v e r involved in a project like this before.” The finished structure includes a summer kitchen with a walk-in fireplace on the first floor and living quarters upstairs, among other unique features, and the Leonards were pleased with the results. “Our goal in doing this was that when someone
drives past or visits, we wanted it to look like it’s been here for over 200 years,” Jim shared. “We’ve had people tell us that it looks like that.” At his Maytown Historical Society program, Jim plans to share pictures of the progression of the project. “I’ll be talking about just what is involved in having a structure like this put up,” he stated. “I’ll share what we did and answer any questions people have.” For more information, search for “May town Histor ical S ocie ty ” on Facebook.

In 1860s London, four women discover themselves and find empowerment in an unusual place - a boxing ring. That’s the premise of “ T he Sweet Science of Bruising,” a play that will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates f ro m F r i d ay, Fe b. 1 6 , through Sunday, Feb. 25. “All four of the women in this show are so drastically different from each other,” said Libby Casey Stauffer, who plays Anna Lamb, one of the boxers, “but still, they find themselves in the same place.” That place is Victorian-era England, where women felt oppression in society, said Chrissy Nickel, who portrays boxer Polly Stokes. “Women had been boxers previously, but in the Victorian era, there was a more conservative push toward women’s role in society, and they were no longer allowed to do anything that was seen as masculine,” she ex pl aine d. “ T hese are women who, through boxing, start to find their own way to exert their power.” First-time director Jeremy Patterson said he was drawn to the script immediately when he read it last year. “It’s very rare that you find a play that forefronts four female leads in which they also get to do stage combat in a way that’s empowering,” he said, noting that he was also drawn to the play’s unique title, a reference to the sport of boxing. Patterson reached out to friends, colleagues and people he admired in the local theater scene to build his dream cast of 10. “I fell in love with this play immediately,” said Deb Good-Zeiner, who plays Aunt George. “The issues that it brings up that the women struggle with are ones women continue to struggle with today, between abuse and being disenfranchised and trying to find their power. I just loved it for those reasons.” Along with gathering the actors he wanted to work with, Patterson brought in Preston Cuer as fight
choreo g rapher for the show, which includes many scenes of stage combat. A member of the Society of American Fight Directors, Cuer has extensive experience staging fights, but this play presented a new challenge. “There’s an array of basic weaponr y you typically use, and boxing is not on that list,” he said. “I had to do a lot of research on the sport.” He watched YouTube videos, including a match from 1902, the oldest recorded boxing match he could find, and learned all he could about how the sport was conducted in the late 1800s. Nickel hopes audiences will come away from the play with a new appreciation for the women’s stories, which are based on historical truth. “ T here are moments of levity in this play, and there are sad moments,” she said. “There are people who don’t make it through, but you also see women winning.” “The Sweet Science of Bruising” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and
