Hard work helps family business thrive BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For almost 150 years, Groff’s Meats has been serving the community from its home in Elizabethtown. What does it take for a business to last for a century and a half? Hard work, dedication and a love for the job,
said Nancy Groff, who operates the business with her three siblings, Virginia, John and Frank. “ You have to have a work ethic. You have to be frugal with your money, and you have to like what you’re doing,” Nancy said. “If you don’t like what you’re See Family pg 5

Junior Scott Creason, who plays George Banks, said the show features a blend of entertainment and life lessons. “ I t ’s a v e r y h i g h - e n e r g y musical, but it also has some teaching moments in it,” he explained. “There are parts of it that are sort of critical of society.” The show also features some special effects on stage as well as
complicated dance numbers. “It’s been a lot of fun rehearsing, but it’s definitely been challenging, because there’s a lot of quickly paced numbers,” said junior Brendan Fritz, who plays Bert. “ There’s a lot of challenging choreography, and we’ve been practicing a lot. I think it’s going to turn out great.” Freshmen Evie K opp and James Mott, who play the Banks children, are performing in their first high school musical. “There’s a lot of singing and dancing for both of us, and a lot of memorizing lines,” said James. “We both have a lot of lines.” Added Evie, “We also had to learn how to get along as a family and how to act like bratty little kids.” The title role is an iconic character well known to audiences, and that proved a bit challenging at first, said senior Claire Hanlon, who plays Mary Poppins. “It’s definitely been a little bit daunting, knowing this role was played by Julie Andrews

performance, dancers from the Baltimore branch of Doherty Petri will join Lancaster students on stage, and Pujol said the show will feature some impressive talent. “We have dancers that are in the top five in North America, the top five in Great Britain,” she said. “We have a couple of people who will be competing in world championships. These are really great dancers.” Pujol grew up in a family of Irish dancers. Her grandmother was a champion Irish dancer from Ireland. “I have always loved Irish dance,” she said. “It’s exciting to see how much interest in it has grown.” She emphasized that audiences are in for an entertaining show that may offer a peek at what’s to come for some of the performers. “These kids are incredibly talented, and they put on an amazing show. Audiences are lucky to see what these dancers can do,” she said, noting that her students have gone on to become professional dancers. “They are going to be watching the future.” Tickets for the event will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance by searching for “Celtic Dance Extravaganza” on Eventbrite.

Teachers, parents, school counselors, a school psychologist, administrators, and other individuals at the parents’ request are involved in the process. The process includes a review of classroom performance and school records, use of rating scales and parental input, and evaluation by school psychologist and multidisciplinary evaluation. All students in the gifted education program demonstrate a need for specially designed instruction. Parents who suspect that their child is in need of specially designed instruction beyond that required in 22 Pa. School Code Section 4 may request in writing their child be evaluated under the criteria of 22 Pa. School Code Section 16.22.

You never know what you might find at the annual Ruhl’s Church indoor yard sale. “There’s always a huge variety,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. The sale will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 7 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. More than 30 stand holders will participate in the event. “ T h e re w i l l b e b a b y clothes, household items, puzzles and a lot of antiques,” said Barb Dunmire, one of the event organizers. Gray noted that church members may donate items for a table where all proceeds from sales directly benefit the church and its ministries. “People enjoy getting to
clean out their closets, and it’s a good excuse to pass along treasures to someone else,” she said. “We have a big table of things this year.” The yard sale will also feature a table of free new and used Bibles and devotional books for people of all ages. Along with yard sale items, a variety of food will be for sale, most prepared by the members of the congregation. The menu will include egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and assorted beverages. New this year, organizers will offer a door prize up for grabs for anyone who attends the sale. The winner will be contacted after the sale and does not need to be present to win.
