EAHS will present “The SpongeBob Musical”

Wholives in a pineapple under the sea? It’s SpongeBob SquarePants, and he’ll be live on stage when Elizabethtown Area High School presents “The SpongeBob Musical.” The show will be performed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, through Saturday, March 4, with an additional 1 p.m. performance on Saturday.

Based on the cartoon, “The SpongeBob Musical” features all of the famous characters from the TV show, said Elyse Hayden, a senior who plays SpongeBob. “The show f ollows SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy on a quest to save Bikini Bottom (their hometown) from destruction,” Elyse said. “It features a lot of the cartoon characters you know, but it humanizes them. It’s been challenging to take on this huge character and put my own spin on it. I wanted to include the cartoon essence of this character

Friendship, fellowship and fun

In a room at Masonic Villages in Elizabethtown, a group of boys are bonding. They’re learning the importance of friendship, the significance of ceremony and the benefits of community service.

They’re all members of DeMolay Elizabethtown, a chapter of DeMolay International.

The group is open to boys ages 12 to 21, and the chapter meets on the first and third Sundays of the month. “I like doing this because it’s a brotherhood opportunity for

but also show a more human side.”

Brendan Fritz, a sophomore who portrays Squidward, noted that his character is a quintessential curmudgeon. “He’s the show’s grump,” he explained, “but he also h as his little moments to shine.”

engaged,” said Grayson Marz, a freshman who portrays Sandy Cheeks. “There’s also a lot of good morals and lessons in this show, but they are delivered in a way that’s fun and entertaining. It’s a bright, colorful set with vibrant songs and characters.”

Scott Creason, a sophomore who plays Sheldon J. Plankton, agreed, adding, “It’s impossible to walk away from this show without feeling good.”

Gear up to make summer memories

Brendan said audiences can expect to be treated to a wide variety of musical styles in the show, including classic Broadway tunes, rock, country, gospel and more. The songs are written by well-known musicians, including Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At The Disco, They Might Be Giants and the Plain W hite T’s.

“There are so many fun songs to keep audiences of all ages

Although the show is fun and light-hearted, it also includes some important messages, Grayson said, noting that her character, a squirrel from Texas who’s into science, represents one of the show’s themes. “She’s not like everybody else in Bikini Bottom, so people will be able to relate to that feeling of being left out or not fitting in,” she remarked, “but they’ll realize they’re just as good as everyone else even if they are different.”

If you’re looking for a fun summer experience for your school-age child, look no further than GEARS summer camp. This year’s camp, Soaring Towards the Future, will run from Monday, June 5, through Wednesday, Aug. 23. Camp will be held at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, for preschoolers and kindergartners, and it will run at East High Street Elementary School, 800 E. High St., for students in grades one through five. Camp will run weekdays from

6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Our theme this year is transportation and careers,” said Wendy Musser, director of the GEARS Kids Center. “Every week, we’re going to be learning about different careers and everything that goes into that career, like the trucks and vehicles driven by different professions.” Weeks will focus on ambulance drivers, construction workers, farmers, airplane pilots and even astronauts, she said.

GEARS has been offering summer camp since 1989, Musser stated, noting that the program fills a

Dayspring Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture. The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”

“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker, events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That three-strand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent

each of the three strands.

The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and Fox News host Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.

Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a Century of Miseducation.” Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first community schools in America were instituted for the purpose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God. “In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s

book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy.

“As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.

Cameron is well-known f or his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has encouraged the family of faith to embrace principles that may bring blessing to America.

Feucht is a worship leader, author, and missionary.

“W hen it comes to the church, few voices have been as loud in calling God’s people to engage the culture and redeem it for Christ,” said Stone.

“It all ties together,” said Becker of the three speakers. “The mission of the Remember America Speaker Series is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was f ounded upon biblical principles. We felt that a threestrand cord is one we wanted to illuminate … to bring people together.”

Dayspring senior Caroline Hostetter of Pequea Township will also present her winning oratory, “America: A Legacy of Honor and Liberty,” at the banquet.

Tickets to the event may be purchased at www .DayspringChristian.com. Readers who wish to sponsor a table may call 717285-2000, ext. 211.

The Elizabeth Hughes Society will meet on Monday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown.

Fran Strouse will be the guest speaker.

Strouse will share the story of the Klein Chocolate baseball team - a story that has been added to the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Research Center. Topics will include the team’s early

years and successes, such as the defeat of a young Boston Red Sox pitcher named Babe Ruth, and the team’s playing and beating the best in the Negro League. Strouse will narrate this tale from the perspective of the team’s manager, Ray Martin.

Fun and fitness with Scottish country dancing

“If we dance a dance in Manheim, the same dance is being danced the same way in London or Berlin or anywhere in the world where there is a branch of Scottish country dancers,” said Sandy Leyh, a teacher with the Red Rose Scottish Country Dancers. If you’d like to be a part of an international activity, now’s your chance. The group will hold four weeks of basic classes on Tuesdays from March 7 through 28. The classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Manheim Train Station, 210 S. Charlotte St.

“You do not need any experience at all to enjoy this,” Leyh stated. “You don’t have to come with a partner. … At the basics class, we’re going to learn the footwork involved with Scottish country dance.” She said the classes will also feature party dances called ceilidh to break the ice. “We’ll use those as warmups for fun to get people moving, and then we’ll learn one of the steps and put it into some easy dances,” she explained. Members of the Red Rose

Scottish Country Dancers teach reels and jigs, which are fast dances, as well as strathspeys, which are slower dances.

Leyh has been involved in Scottish country dancing since she saw a demonstration more than 25 years ago in Elizabethtown. “I fell in love with it,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Wow! I want to do this!’” She joined a group in Harrisburg, but when the group realized a lot of the members were making the drive from Lancaster, someone suggested they start a local group. “They appointed

young men to get together for service, fun events and to support charities,” said Kenton Green, who is the master councilor for the chapter. As Kenton explained, one boy is chosen by his peers for this leadership role and serves a six-month term. He runs the meetings, helped by the rest of the council, which includes Todd Schwartz Jr. as senior councilor and Rusty Armstrong as junior councilor. During the meetings, the boys are guided by a roster of advisers, including Gary Schwartz, Todd’s grandfather; Dave Berry; and Jesse Spence.

“The major charity we support is Children’s Dyslexia Centers,” said Kenton, a 15year-old who attends Solanco High School. At a recent meeting, a group of boys worked on plans for Dodgeball for Dyslexia, a tournament that will be held on Saturday, May 13. Members of DeMolay have also volunteered at the Taste of Western Lancaster County at Elizabethtown Public Library, the Community Cupboard food bank and the Elizabethtown Fair. Upcoming fun outings for the group include bowling, a weekend cabin trip and a

me to do that, and I thought, ‘Well, we’ll give it a go. It won’t work,’” she said with a laugh. “Our club actually marked our 25th anniversary during COVID.”

Leyh said she loves many things about Scottish country dancing. “It’s a neat activity, it’s fun and social, and it’s great exercise. It’s really good mental and physical exercise,” she noted, adding that she has participated in workshops and dances throughout the region as well as in other parts of the world. “We are a very hospitable group. You always know you’re welcome.”

Leyh emphasized Manheim is a particularly cool place to try Scottish country dancing, because the region was settled by Scots. “This is part of our heritage,” she stated. “Scots have always done this type of dancing.”

All of the dances taught by the Red Rose Scottish Country Dancers come from books published by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, and new dances are written every year.

“I like to encourage young people to come out and try this,” Leyh commented. “It’s a nice way to meet other young people with a common interest. ... Everyone should give it a try. If you like music, if you like moving, getting some exercise and meeting new people, come join us. It takes a while to get really comfortable with it, but we’re patient.”

Participants should wear soft-soled shoes and wear a mask to classes. For more information or to register for classes, call Leyh at 717615-7511.

Barnstormers baseball game.

As Gary explained, DeMolay began in 1919 in Kansas City, Mo. The first chapter started in Pennsylvania in 1923. The organization is named for Jacques DeMolay, the last grand master of the Knights Templar, and it was started by Frank S. Land. Land and other organizers created a book that each chapter uses as the structure for meetings, and all DeMolay chapters emphasize seven core values: filial love, reverence, courtesy, comradeship, fidelity, cleanness and patriotism. Meetings feature opening and closing ceremonies, business items such as bills and budgeting and discussion of upcoming events.

“I am in this club for the privilege of service,” said Kenton’s brother, Holden, who is 18. “DeMolay offers a prime opportunity to do that. This is a learning opportunity to serve, to practice and improve your public speaking and to grow in your leadership skills. It’s also fun to hang around other like-minded people your age.”

For Todd, the organization has provided not just an opportunity to have fun, but

also a time for personal growth. “DeMolay helped me open up more,” said Todd, 19. “When I first joined, I was very shy and quiet, and I can say that through DeMolay, I have changed very much.”

Rusty, a 15-year-old Solanco student, joined DeMolay at Kenton’s urging. “I would encourage anyone who is interested to learn more,” he said. “You’ll learn so much from this group, you’ll have a lot of fun and you’ll make a lot of friends.”

There are currently 40 boys in the Elizabethtown chapter of DeMolay, but about 15 regularly attend meetings. Boys attend from all over Lancaster and surrounding counties, and the group is looking for new members. For more information on DeMolay, contact Kenton at 717-333-3781 or kentonmgreen@gmail.com.

ET rifle team takes 2nd in League Championship

It is not often that the same high school sporting event can bring both happiness and sadness but that is the case for the Elizabethtown rifle team. The Bears traveled to Conestoga Valley High School on February 11th to take part in the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s Individual Championships, bringing sadness with the end of the 2022-2023 season. However, a stellar 991 team score slotted E-town second in the final team standings, bringing happiness. That 991 was a mere three points behind Manheim Township’s winning score.

“I am really pleased, in the big tournament at the end of the season, we beat everybody but Township,” said head coach Dave Reinfried of his team’s silver medal run.

Kate Kruft led that charge, capturing individual silver with a 200 and two centers. The junior actually finished in a first place tie with Garden Spot’s Leksi Bender but missed out on the individual crown. Once the tie breakers were sorted, it was determined that Bender’s two center shots gave her the edge, giving Kruft the silver.

Parker Bryant cracked the top 10 with his 199 while Luke Turner was two positions behind, in 12th place, with a 198 and one center. Branden Rain matched Turner’s 198 and one center but

rounded out the top 15 after tiebreakers were applied.

With the individual tournament signaling the end of the season, All-Star nods were also handed out. Elizabethtown was one of three schools to place two shooters on the All-Star list, joining Township and Garden Spot.

“Two All-Stars, always makes me happy because kids are getting individual glory,” said Reinfried.

Turner, with a 99.2 match average, and Bryant, who finished with a 99.1 average, were those two All-Stars.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The hardwood hoops season came to a close on February 9th for Elizabethtown with the boy’s team traveling to Ephrata where they picked up a 56-52 victory while the Lady Bears fell to Ephrata at home by a 59-35 final.

The four-point overtime win was the boy’s third straight victory and moved the Bears into 15th place in the District 3-5A unofficial rankings, leaving E-town just outside the district dance.

As the game moved along it appeared like the Bears would pick up an easy win, a fourpoint halftime lead ballooning to 10 points after a 15-9 run out of the break. Ephrata controlled the fourth quarter to the tune of 19-9, sending the game into an extra session. Elizabethtown claimed that extra time, 10-6, giving them the 56-52 win.

Caiden Zeager netted a team high 16 points with

Brendan Lehman close behind with 15 points. Both Branden Cummings and Noah Locke added 11 points each while Dax Kelly (two points) and Cooper Torborg (one point) cleaned up the remaining points.

For the Lady Bears, the comforts of home did not seem to be an advantage as Ephrata used a 22-12 push off the opening whistle to create the bulk of their 16-point halftime cushion.

Another strong Ephrata frame went down in the third where the Lady Mountaineers posted a 17-8 edge, extending their lead to 25 before E-town managed an 8-7 run in the fourth for the 59-35 final.

Taryn Hummer scored a team high 14 while Chloe Wilkinson was the only other Lady Bear in double digits with 11 points. Callie LoveMorris (five points), Jadyn Lloyd (two points), Jillian Morris (two points) and Sidney Avers (one point) rounded out the scoring.

BOWLING

The bowling team added to their trophy case with a run to the L-L Team title on February 8th. The championship run left head coach Frank Telenko nearly speechless, but the skipper did manage to say, “Excited and humbled by the success of this group. Not sure they understand their true potential yet.”

The run started with a 2-0 win over Lampeter-Strasburg in the quarterfinals with E-town posting wins of 954-776 and 921-776. The bulk of the Bear bowlers finished with similar pin counts, the lone exception was Ella Eberle and her 163-154 day. Zach Wentzel went 224-175 while Mason Moore finished nine pins back with his 214-176 game. Declan Lentz (387) and Derek Deardorff (382) finished the top five.

The Bears needed all three games to get by Ephrata in the semifinals, using wins of 964-900 and 928-819 to counter Ephrata’s 838-809 opening game win. Wentzel started slow but finished strong on his way to a 613 series. Moore (542) and Deardorff (540) were a mere two pins apart while Lentz was the last Bear to top 500 with his 517 series. Eberle added a 489 to complete the scoring five.

E-town also needed three games to dispatch Penn Manor in the finals after dropping the opening game 898-860. The Bears rebounded with wins of 850-760 and 798-730 to secure the L-L Team title. Moore fronted the title run with games of 229, 243 and 162. Wentzel fell just short of the 600-pin mark, settling for a 580. Deardorff had games of 158, 170 and 177 to finish with a

505 series. Eberle added a 415 series while Lentz wrapped up the win with a 374 series.

SWIMMING

Elizabethtown made a splash at the LancasterLebanon League Swimming Championship on February 10th and 11th with both the boy’s and girls teams finishing fourth in the team standings. The Bears posted a slew of top-10 times.

“I’m really proud of what we accomplished this weekend,” said head coach Chad Houck.

The boy’s claimed fourth place in all three relay events setting team records in the process. Jack Ketchum, Trevor Nolen, Reid Gilmore and Nathan Yohn posted a 1:43.05 in the 200 medley relay. Yohn then teamed with Everett Rachael, Jared Louie and Adam Mickievicz for a 1:30.91 in the 200 freestyle relay while Rachael, Louie, Gilmore and Jack Ketchum went 3:17.81 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Rachael posted the top individual finish, taking silver in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.78. The sophomore added a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle. Gilmore collected two solo medals as well, taking third in the 100 butterfly (54.30) while adding a fourth place finish in the 500 freestyle. Carter Ketchum

joined Gilmore on the 500 free podium, taking eighth with a time of 5:13.72. He also claimed eighth place in the 200 IM with a 2:08.98. Jack Ketchum (5th - 100 backstroke) and Nolen (10th100 breaststroke) picked up E-town’s final top-10 medals. The Lady Bears also collected medals in all three relay events starting with a silver in the 200 medley relay. Genna McDonald, Morgan Conway, Ali Fink and Tessa Cronin posted a 1:54.26, finishing before everyone but Manheim Township. Conway, McDonald and Cronin were joined by Olivia Hirst for a fourth place swim in the 200 freestyle relay while Hirst and Fink teamed up with Julia Garber and Rene Oltmans for a sixth place run in the 400 freestyle relay.

A trio of Lady Bears enjoyed two top-10 finishes starting with Conway and her 100 breaststroke silver. Conway added a sixth place in the 200 freestyle with a 2:02.08. McDonald posted matching ninth place finishes in the 50 freestyle (26.11) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.22) while Fink earned her top-10s in the 200 IM (9th - 2:22.08) and 100 butterfly (10th1:03.23).

Garber posted the final podium run, taking eighth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.98.

Gallery posts Irish-inspired arts events

The Square Halo Gallery within The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, will host an Irishinspired show in March and April.

The spring exhibit will feature printmaking from Lancaster County illustrator, graphic designer and curator Ned Bustard. His two new books are “Saint Patrick the Forgiver,” a children’s book published Feb. 21, and “33: Reflections on the Gospel of Saint John,” a book of Irish poetry with art inspired by the well-known “Book of Kells,” a manuscript Gospel book in Latin.

On First Friday, March 3, a book release party for “Saint

Patrick the Forgiver” will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery. The story highlights Patrick, a bishop of Ireland who was not actually Irish. Combining Patrick’s words from his Confessions with a few of the legends about him, the retelling teaches families about the life of the real saint and helps them discover a story of love and forgiveness along the way.

The Row House will host a lecture on St. Patrick at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 17. Graham Dennis will share a tale that challenges many assumptions about Patrick. Tickets may be purchased at a discounted price in advance or full price at the door. Row House members plus one guest will be admitted for free. For tickets

and more details, visit www.therowhouse.org.

In May, the gallery will welcome select student artists from Messiah University, and the summer show will focus on the art of Sandra Bowden, a pioneer in the art and faith movement of the past several decades.

Part of the Lancaster City Art Galleries & Museums, the gallery changes its exhibits every other month. The gallery is open from 6 to 9 p.m. on First Fridays, by appointment and during events at The Trust. To learn more, visit www.squarehalobooks.com or search for @squarehalogallery on Instagram.
