A scent-sational student-run business
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Oneof the goals of Kelsey Olsen’s autistic support classroom at Elizabethtown Area High School is to provide opportunities for students to hone their life and work skills. Thanks to a unique partnership with a local business, that just became a little easier.
Olsen’s students have created soaps, lotions, tote bags and T-shirts, which they now sell at Naturally Gifted by Jeri, located on the square in Elizabethtown.
All items created by the students are sold under the business name Autism Specialty Co. The project began as an in-school business earlier this year when a parent of one of Olsen’s students approached her about making T-shirts. Although they added those eventually, the students started with handmade soaps and lotions. “I make my own soaps and lotions, so I was already familiar with how to do it,” Olsen recalled. They began selling the products in school and to family members. “We did so well, we
decide to expand to apparel,” Olsen stated. The students sell tote bags, T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, polo shirts and jackets that feature unique artwork they designed.
Designs include an abstract selfportrait, a dragon inspired by “Raya and the Last Dragon,” a cat playing a guitar and a John Deere 111 riding mower. Soon, the class had also created a website for its products, and the students were able to reach an even bigger customer base.
One day, Jeri Culbertson, owner of Naturally Gifted by Jeri, saw a Facebook post about the Autism Specialty Co. and was intrigued. “Their products were locally made, all natural, vegan and cruelty-free,” Culbertson said. “It fit exactly with what I promote and sell here. Everything I have is all natural and handcrafted.” Culbertson contacted Olsen about selling the students’ products in her store. “I want to lift people up with what I do and what I sell,” she stated. “I’m always on the lookout for new and different items. The students are very excited about this, and I’m excited, too.”

Spring book sale will have something for everyone
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When it came time to schedule their spring book sale, the Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library decided to try something different this year. Rather than a few days with limited categories of items for sale, the group has expanded the sale to a full week and a wide variety of genres. The spring book sale will be held from Monday, March 27, through Saturday, April 1, in the lower level of the library,

Free clothing will be offered to community
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For the bus drivers who work for Durham School Services in Elizabethtown, community is everything. Not only do they give their time to transporting students to and from school, but now they also have created an event to give back. Durham’s first community clothing giveaway will be held on Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the business, 2202 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. “We are passionate about our jobs and like to help to
give back to the community,” said Stacy Moore, a driver and one of the event organizers.
The clothing giveaway will be open to anyone, but organizers hope it is attended most by people in need. Donations are curently sought. “We are hoping to get clothes in all sizes, from babies and kids to men’s and women’s clothing,” Moore stated, noting that Durham has been collecting donations for several weeks. “We’re also hoping to have some household necessities and baby items.”

She explained that the idea for the clothing giveaway came from the drivers themselves. “The drivers will often bring in clothes or household items that they no longer want,” Moore explained. “They would set them on a table we have in our break room for other drivers to go through. We figured, ‘Why not do a big drive for the public?’”
The Durham employees have held other community events in the past, including a craft and vendor show. Bingo is planned for Sunday, April 16, at the American
Legion Post 34, 1388 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at noon, and bingo will start at 2 p.m.
Moore said she and her fellow drivers enjoy contributing to their community, and they hope to get a good crowd at the clothing giveaway. “This is a judgment-free place,” she stated. “Anyone who is in need or knows of anyone in need is more than welcome to stop out and see what we have.”
For more information on the clothing drive or bingo, email Moore at durhamparty events@gmail.com.

On a Wednesday in February, several of Olsen’s six students visited Culbertson’s store, bringing soaps, lotions and T-shirts with them. Olsen explained that the process for making soaps and lotions starts with each student choosing two essential oil scents. Those are mixed together, and each student takes a sniff and then votes on his or her favorites, which are made into the final product. “We’re doing some limited-edition scents seasonally,” Olsen stated. “We just did a rose and coconut for Valentine’s Day and a strawberryeucalyptus.” Other scents include peppermint-lemongrass and tea tree-pumpkin. Proceeds from sales of the products are used to fund Community-Based Instruction, Olsen remarked, noting that each week, the class learns about a specific topic such as grocery shopping, then takes a field trip - for example, to a grocery store to purchase food to bring back to school and cook. “We’ve gone to the laun-
dromat to learn how to do laundry. We’ve gone to a sitdown restaurant, ordered, eaten and paid for our food.”
Olsen emphasized that Autism Specialty Co. has exceeded her expectations.
“We are over the moon with how successful this has been,” she said. “The E-town community has been so welcoming to us. We’ve had so many E-town orders, but we’ve had out-of-state orders, too.”

Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such products
poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems. Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.

As the days get longer and the weather warmer, the high school sporting world shifts its attention outside. Before that move goes mainstream, the majority of the Elizabethtown bowling team put a bow on its 2022-23 season, taking part in the District 3 Championship and the Eastern PA Regional Championship.
First for the Bears was a short trip to Clearview Lanes f or the District 3 Championship, held on Feb. 25. A total of five Bears made the trip, but only one was able to escape the qualifying round and that was senior Zach Wentzel. Wetzel posted the top qualifying score with games of 246, 220, 235, 216 and 236, giving him a 1153 total. That dropped
Wetzel into the semifinal round of the stepladder finals, where he topped the 2020 District Champion, Ayden Davis of Antietam, 205-157. Wetzel’s title hunt came up just short with a loss to Middletown’s Cameron Wegert in the finals.
Derek Deardorff and Mason Moore also took part in the district championship, with both missing the finals.
Deardorff finished 26th with a 998 qualifying score thanks to games of 211, 192, 209, 184 and 202. Moore’s 901 qualifying tally had him 38th in the final standings with games of 179, 157, 193, 221 and 151.
For the Lady Bears it was Ella Eberle and Kendra Griffie making a district appearance with Eberle narrowly missing
the finals. She bowled games of 208, 194, 173, 181 and 206, putting her qualifying tally at 962, just 11 pins and two places outside the top six that earned a spot in the stepladder finals. Griffie finished 33rd with qualifying games of 163, 110, 134, 142 and 175, giving her a 724 series.
A week later the Bears split time between Leisure Lanes in Lancaster and 222 Dutch Lanes in Ephrata, taking part in the Eastern PA Regional Bowling Championships that were held March 3 and 4.
March 3 was the individual championship, with Wentzel and Eberle leading the way once again. Eberle earned a spot in the PA Bowling Championship courtesy of her 10th-place finish in
qualifying. She tallied a 971 with games of 169, 220, 202, 206 and 174, putting her just inside the top 12. Eberle’s regional run came to a close in the quad-singles, her 172 coming in 32 pins off the winning tally.
Wentzel missed the finals on the boys’ side by just 23 pins, games of 225, 190, 211, 207 and 226 pushing his qualifying tally to 1059 and 16th place. Moore and Deardorff posted qualifying scores just 22 pins apart, but Moore’s 990 slotted him 40th while Deardorff’s 972 had him in 45th.
March 4 had the Bears back at Leisure Lanes to battle in the team competition. “Saturday was truly a HEARTBREAKER,” said head coach Frank Telenko. “We finished in seventh place, just seven pins out, and it was tough for the kids and coaches.”
Telenko was referencing his squad’s 4128 tally in the team qualifying, which fell just short of the 4135 cut for the finals. “ We’ll remember that feeling for the next 365 days and use it as motivation for the 202324 season!” Telenko said.
Wentzel continued his hot streak with a team-high 641 series. Declan Lentz (597),
Eberle (586), Deardorff (563) and Moore (526) rounded out the bowlers in team qualifying.
SWIMMING
Wh ile the bowling season ended for all but Eberle on March 3 and 4, the 2022-23 season officially came to an end for the swimming team. The Bears made the trip to Cumberland Valley High School for the District 3-3A Championship, where the Lady Bears finished 19th in the team standings and the boys 15th. “We had a good showing at this year’s district meet,” said head coach Chad Houck. “We took the largest group we ever have and placed really well overall in both the boys’ and girls’ meets. We had three podium finishes, which is a great reflection of the time and effort put into training this year.”
Two of the three podium finishes Houck referenced took place on the boys’ side. Everett Rachael nabbed one with an eighth-place time of 1:46.04 in the 200-freestyle, with Jack Ketchum accounting for the other, also an eighth-place finish but in the 100-backstroke with a time of 53.59. Morgan Conway added the third podium
finish, clocking a 1:07.34 in the 100-breaststroke, slotting her eighth.
All three added one solo event each, with Rachael placing 10th in the 100-backstroke with a time of 53.83. Ketchum finished 30th in the 200-free with a 1:53.00 while Conway took part in the girls’ 200-free, finishing 23rd with a time of 2:00.72.
Conway also swam as part of two relay races for Elizabethtown. Genna McDonald, Ali Fink and Tessa Cronin joined Conway for a 13thplace run in the 200-medley relay. In the 200-free relay it was Olivia Hirst who joined Conway, McDonald and Cronin to finish 14th with a time of 1:45.61.
Fink, McDonald and Cronin all took part in two individual races, with Julia Garber mixing it up in the 100-breaststroke, where she finished 23rd. Fink posted a 2:22.39 in the 200 IM, taking 24th, while her 1:03.50 in the 100butterfly was the 25th-best time of the day. Both McDonald and Cronin took part in the 50-freestyle, with McDonald taking 27th (26.05) and Cronin 31st (26.38). McDonald added a 28th-place finish

in the 100-breaststroke, while Cronin added a 28th-place finish in the 100-free to her weekend.
Back on the boys’ side, the Bears put a relay team in all three races, with the 400freestyle team of Rachael, Jared Louie, Reid Gilmore and Ketchum taking 11th with a time of 3:18.90. Trevor Nolen joined Ketchum, Gilmore and Louie for a 12thplace run in the 200-medley relay (1:42.77), with Nathan Yohn and Adam Mickievicz joining Rachael and Louie for a 16th-place finish (1:31.37) in the 200-freestyle relay.
The Bears enjoyed three
more swimmers taking part in four events with Gilmore pulling the double. He placed 17th in the 100-fly (54.71) and 18th in the 500-freestyle (4:58.24). Nolen posted a 1:06.23 in the 100-breaststroke, placing him 31st.
Carter Ketchum picked up the last event, finishing 31st in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.65.
“While we fell short on having anyone qualify for states,” added Houck for one final thought, “we laid more foundation for future races by competing amongst some of the best the state has to offer in District 3.”
Students collect soup for Community Cupboard
Jesus laidhis life down willingto help all of us. Nowhere didHe demandforor seek afterHis own rights. No one was ever powerful enough to take Jesus’life. He sacrificed it voluntarily. We are all a part of the “Other Sheep”He mentions in this scripture passage.
Children, families and staff members at Elizabethtown Child Care Center collected soup cans as part of a “Souper Bowl” can drive. The boxes were collected in conjunction with this year’s NFL championship and donated to the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown on Feb. 20. The children and staff celebrated their goal with an ice cream party.

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarmland trust.org.

Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.
The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Garner becomes owner/broker at Life Changes Realty
Real estate agent turned broker Brittany Garner became the new owner of Life Changes Realty Group on Jan. 1 and the broker of record on Feb. 10. She and her team aim to give back $1 million to local nonprofit organizations chosen by their clients through Life Changes Realty Group’s Pay-It-Forward program, which donates 10% of Life Changes’ commissions on every home sale.
Garner noted that one client chose to donate to Dance Wheels, whose mission is teaching people who are non-ambulatory to dance with people with and without physical disabilities. She also recounted stories of homebuyers who wanted to give back to organizations that had helped their loved ones at
the end of life.
Under the direction of founder Naomi Fredlund of Elizabethtown, the company has already donated $728,339 to its clients’ choice of charities over the past 12 years.
Fredlund will remain an associate broker.
Life Changes has its main office in Lancaster and a branch office in Elizabethtown, and it is looking to
expand to the West Shore. Life Changes serves all of Lancaster and the surrounding counties, including Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin and York.
Garner is taking the reigns of a company that has helped buy and sell more than 1,811 homes and donated to nearly 500 charities. With 12 real estate agents on the team, Garner hopes to grow that number to include even more people
Dietitians to offer free virtual cooking classes
who are passionate about the profession as well as giving back to their community.
A Penn Manor alumna, Garner and her family live in Millersville Borough. She serves on eight local nonprofit boards and committees, including Clare House, Shawn Lewis Keebler (SLK) and Aaron’s Acres. For more information about the agency, visit www.lifechangesrealty.org.
