Connecting to the community:
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Over the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling
ads while their children - Charlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company
before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically. Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges
have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It

Head to the Winters Heritage House Museum on Tuesday, March 26, and you can watch history come to life.
Dr. Daisy Century, a historical interpreter, will present the story of Mary Fields, the first Black woman to become a contracted U.S. Postal Service route mail carrier.
“(Century’s) performances are educational, transforming and empowering, just a few adjectives to describe the program,” said museum director Teresa St. Angelo, who noted that the program will feature a question-and-answer period.
Century’s presentation fits nicely with the museum’s current exhibit, “No Matter the Dress, Women Making a Difference,” as well as the 2024 theme for the National Women’s History Alliance, “Women Who Advocated for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion,” St. Angelo said. “When I started to research the extensive list of women whose accomplishments paved the way for other women, I said to myself, ‘If only they were here to tell us their story in person,’” she recalled. Inspiration struck when she discovered Century and her programs.
“I read about the characters she portrayed, and there was no question as to which woman I would love to talk to right now,” St. Angelo said of Century’s portrayal of Fields. “How did Mary forge ahead with the choices she made in positions women had never taken on before? Then I read about Dr.

Spring Show will bring the outdoors to you
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages are invited to the 59th annual Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) Spring Show. The event will be held on Saturday, March 30, from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. at Maytown-East Donegal Township Fire Department, 160 E. High St., Maytown.
“This is our major fundraiser,” said Brandon Crouser, DFCA president. Entry is free, but donations will be accepted. Membership cards
for DFCA will be sold at the door, and the majority of members purchase theirs at the show, he said. Membership supports the activities of the DFCA and provides member-only discounts at local fishing stores.
At the Spring Show, people can expect a variety of events and activities. “It’s very diverse,” said Crouser. “We have vendors, games, food, animal presenters and guest speakers.” A variety of giveaway drawings will also be held at the show.
Vendors will include Dream Weaver Custom Rods, Pennsylvania Trappers Association, the Addicted Angler, local nonprofit groups and more.
“We have a lot of local artists, jewelry makers and crafts,” Crouser said. “It’s not just hunting and fishing vendors.”
From noon to 2 p.m., Critter Connections will set up a stand with opportunities to get up close to a variety of animals.
Let’s Geaux Tracking K9 Game Recovery Service will present a program with Captain Talk 2-It, a certified leashed wounded game recovery dog. The organization will set up a “blood” trail for Captain to follow,
demonstrating his tracking skills.
Ryan “The Bug Man” Bridge will offer an educational program about insects.
Tickets for a meal from Harvey’s Main Street BBQ were presold, but a limited supply of meals featuring pork barbecue, baked beans and coleslaw will be available at the show. Proceeds will benefit DFCA’s upcoming kids’ fishing derby and its trout nursery program.
DFCA is dedicated to the caretaking and restoration of the Donegal Creek and its tributaries. The nonprofit organization operates a cooperative nursery, raising and stocking 3,000 to 5,000 trout annually for the Donegal Creek and Little Chiques Creek. DFCA members also participate in community cleanups and creek stewardship.
For more information on DFCA or the Spring Show, visit https://donegalcreek. com or search for the organization on Facebook.

History exhibit, presentation planned
Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown, has
announced its spring exhibit, “No Matter the Dress, Women Making a Difference: Celebrating Women Who Advocated for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.” The exhibit will run through Friday, March 29, and will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursday, and Fridays. The exhibit will be open until 7 p.m. on Friday, March 15. The event coincides with Women’s History Month.
In addition to spotlighting women who advocated for equity, diversity, and inclusion, the exhibit will feature information on Ruth Handler, complete with a Barbie display, and an Elizabethtown resident’s collection of women’s clothing and accessories from the 1850s to 1980s. Admission is a set fee or
a canned good donation. For more details, call the museum at 717-367-4672, email teresa@elizabeth townhistory.org or search for “Spring Exhibit Opening Day: No Matter the Dress, Women Making a Difference” on Facebook.
In connection with the exhibit, historical interpreter Daisy Century will portray cowgirl, mail carrier, and stagecoach driver Mary Fields on Tuesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the adjacent H.U. Coble House, 33 E. High St. Elizabethtown.
Fields was born a slave in Tennessee and then freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. She traveled west to Montana, where she cared for an ill childhood friend and found work as a stable hand and foreman at a mill. Fields became the first African American woman to drive a mail delivery stagecoach
for the U.S. Post Office Department. Fields, who could also read and shoot, became a popular and inspiring figure with both frontier journalists and the residents of the Montana town of Cascade, where she was the only African American resident.
The presentation is free and open to the public as part of the Conversation E-town series, but reservations are requested because seating is limited. To register, search for “Dr. Daisy Century as Mary Fields: A Historical Performance” at www.eventbrite.com. For more information, call the aforementioned number or email malinda@elizabeth townhistory.org.
There is both free and metered parking behind 33 E High St., with additional parking beyond the alley or at the nearby Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 75 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

Daisy Century! All (Century) has experienced and accomplished will be such an inspiration.”
An award-winning science teacher who taught for more than 20 years in the Philadelphia school system, Century is also the author of four books as well as an actress and historical interpreter. She brings to life historic figures including Harriet Tubman, Madam C. J. Walker and Sojourner Truth.
People who attend Century’s program will also have the opportunity to explore the museum’s exhibit.
“Women have made impactful change around the world, largely while
wearing dresses, though not always the case,” said Lauren Fox, museum manager. The March exhibit features various topics and materials related to women and history, including clothing items dating to the 1800s on loan from local resident Jan Parola.
“We will have multiple vintage wedding dresses, a hat collection, a brooch collection, as well as formal and regular wear. There will be historical information about women’s clothing through the ages throughout the world,” Fox shared. “Additionally, in honor of Women’s History Month and this year’s theme, ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,’
we will spotlight several women throughout history and career fields who had major impacts on the world. There will be a tribute to Barbie and the impact she had over young girls and women alike, which includes a vintage Barbie collection and history about the creator, Ruth Handler.” The exhibit also features hands-on activities for children.
On the day of Century’s program, the exhibit will be open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the museum, located at 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Doors to the H.U. Coble House, part of the museum complex where Century will hold her program, will open at
6:30 p.m., and the performance will begin at 7 p.m.
St. Angelo hopes both Century’s program and the exhibit will leave people with an appreciation for history and women’s roles in making it.
“See and hear history as you never heard before,” she said. “Be prepared to be entertained, engaged and inspired.”
Century’s presentation is free, but reservations are requested by calling 717-367-4672 or emailing winters-hh@elizabeth townhistory.org.
