Focusing on friendship in “Disney’s Descendants: The Musical”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“If you have watched Disney movies before, and you like Disney movies, this is the perfect combination of all of them together,” said Elizabethtown Area Middle School sixth-grader Andrew Wagner, describing “Disney’s Descendants: The Musical.” The show will be performed in the auditorium at Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. on April 6.
The show features more than 100 students in the cast and crew, said Benjamin Fortier, who is directing the musical with Lauren Ritter. “This is a generation of kids who grew up with the ‘Descendants’ movies, so it seemed like a good choice for a show,” he noted.
Based on the movies of the same name, the musical tells the story about the children of classic Disney villains interacting with the world of the children of Disney heroes, said Ben Creason, an eighth-grader who plays
“The show is about the villains’ kids being sent to a school with the heroes’ kids.”
Prince Ben, the son of the Beast and Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.” “The show’s theme is about overcoming prejudice to make a better tomorrow,” Ben stated.
Andrew, who plays Carlos, the son of Cruella de Vil, said the show features high-energy songs
and dancing, showcasing Disney characters in a new light.
Emma Golihew, an eighth-grader who portrays Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen, agreed. “The show is about the villains’ kids being sent to a school with the heroes’ kids,” she explained. “The children of the villains are supposed to cause trouble, but they are kind of debating whether they want to or not.”
Featuring songs from the “Descendants” movies, the musical covers a wide range of emotions, said Stephen Fasick, an eighth-grader who portrays Jay, the son of Jafar. “The song ‘Did I Mention?’ is about love, and the song ‘Goal’ is about winning, and the song ‘Break This Down’ is about all coming together,” he said. He noted that the most challenging part of the musical has been staying on task, adding with a laugh, “It’s a middle school show

Creating art outside
BY CATHY MOLITORISMarietta has a history of art, having once been the home to the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. Members of Marietta Art Alive! are working to keep art thriving in the town. The group will host River Towns Plein Air with a series of activities throughout the town.
Fifty artists representing seven states were selected to
participate in the event, said Marita Hines, co-founder of Marietta Art Alive! Artists will kick off the festivities by painting “en plein air,” or outdoors, at various locations on both sides of the Susquehanna River over an eight-day period beginning on Wednesday, April 10. More than $5,000 in awards will be presented to artists selected by juror Allan Thompson, and the event will end with a four-day

Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure is waiting to be discovered
BY JEFF FALKIt’s good, clean family fun. It’s problem solving. It’s a local expedition.
It’s one of the most creative fundraisers you’ll ever run across.
Adam Zurn calls it Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. It’s his vision, his brainchild.
“It’s a little bit like ‘National Treasure’ meets Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Zurn.
“I’m a child of the ‘80s and I grew up on films. I thought it would be cool to go on an adventure. As I got older, I realized I couldn’t go on adventures anymore. But I get just as much enjoyment from people going on my adventure, from playing my game.”
In association with the local history organization Uncharted Lancaster, Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure is a real-life treasure hunt.

Plein Air, Hines said. Joining her in the effort are Marianne Calenda, Melissa Carroll, Linda Mylin Ross, Susan Davitti Darling and Joanne McIlvaine. “They joined forces with the nonprofit Rivertownes PA USA, who had a similar interest in bringing art to the river towns,” she explained. “Some of us in the group met while painting outdoors.” Proceeds from the event will support future plein air activities and will benefit other artist activities in the river towns as well. For more information on River Towns Plein Air, visit www.marietta artalive.com. Art from
On Saturday, April 13, the public is invited to participate in a Quick Draw event. “Any artist can register up until the morning of the event,” Hines notes. “The Quick Draw is a two-hour challenge in Marietta starting at 10 a.m., and cash prizes will be awarded by the juror, Scott Cantrell of Lancaster.” Children are invited to paint alongside adults, and free art supplies and T-shirts will be available to young artists while supplies last. Hines said that during the Quick Draw event on April 13, the Marietta Cherry Blossom Festival will begin at 1 p.m. along Front Street and will feature vendors, food and live music.
Art created in the plein air portion will be displayed and for sale in the studio space in the rear of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., from Thursday, April 18, through Sunday, April 21. Hours are 7 to 9 p.m. on April 18; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 21. “The exhibit is free to attend, and attendees are encouraged to vote for their favorite painting,” Hines commented.

Avery Heckman, an eighthgrader who plays Mal, the daughter of Maleficent, said audiences will walk away with the message of the importance of friendship. Anyone of any background can turn into some-
one good, she shared. “Your friends will always be with you,” she said, noting that getting to play a part in the musical has allowed her to make new friends. “It’s been great working with the directors and getting to be a part of this really amazing community. It’s just a really fun experience.”

Event to showcase zines
The second annual Lancaster Zine Fest will be held on Saturday, April 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St. After a soldout first fest that attracted hundreds of attendees, the event will expand to two floors at Southern Market and feature more than 60 independent artists and writers showcasing a variety of self-published works.
Zines, pronounced “zeens” - short for magazines or fanzines - are self-published booklets that often feature alternative perspectives and collaborations. Zines have a rich history within underground culture and provide a grassroots form of expression for artists to share their ideas with a wider audience. The Lancaster Zine Fest aims to provide a platform for this art form, celebrating and promoting zines and the authors and artists who create them. Attendees may connect with creators and browse a variety of zines
and art items available for purchase. Zine topics may include music, art, comics, poetry, politics, collage, and photography.
In addition to vendors, the event will include free workshops on zine-making, paper-making, book-binding, drawing, and writing for people of all ages, allowing festival attendees to learn about the craft from experienced creators.
The event is free and open to people of all ages. For more information, email lancasterzf@ gmail.com, contact Kim Holland at notthatkimholland@gmail.com, visit www.lancasterzinefest.com or search for @lancasterzinefest on Instagram. People may also search for #lancasterzinefest on social media.

After each group purchases a treasure diary, registered teams of three to six players decipher five weekly challenges and riddles that provide clues for unlocking segments of the treasure’s GPS coordinates. It’s a contest that challenges participants’ knowledge of local history, their physical abilities to navigate different terrain and their problem-solving skills.
Treasure
Each week the clues will be hidden in different parts of Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Prizes will be awarded to the top four teams.
“It’s the only one I know of in Lancaster County,” said Zurn. “I’ve seen little afternoon treasure hunts here and there. But no one is doing a cash prize of this size. All expenses are being paid by generous sponsors, and all sales of the treasure diaries go to nonprofits.”
The initial treasure clues for Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure will be released on Saturday, April 6, and teams are required to register before then. The clues will be released on each subsequent Saturday leading up to a climactic final race to the treasure on Saturday, May 4.
almost $6,000 for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and LancasterHistory.
“The team that won last year was a three-generation family,” said Zurn. “Others are just friends, sometimes they’re groups from work, some are families. It’s a smattering of people. We’ve even had some people from out of state playing. Typically, the teams that do the best are made up of three to six people who are good at brainstorming and spitballing ideas.”
Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure marks Zurn’s fourth treasure hunt. It was preceded by last year’s Jewel of the Susquehanna and Find My Easter Egg in 2022.
