Mount Calvary will perform “Hello, Dolly!”
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhat happens when a busybody matchmaker comes to town on a mission? In the case of “Hello, Dolly!” a lot of comedy, chaos and love.
Mount Calvary Christian School will present “Hello, Dolly!” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, through Saturday, April 13, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. on April 13. Performances will be held at the school, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown.
“Dolly is very confident, bold and loud,” said Sophia Bozell, a sophomore who plays the title character. “She’s always the loudest one in the room.”
When Dolly decides she wants to keep her latest match, Horace Vandergelder, for herself, her decision has a ripple effect that impacts several other residents of
1890s New York, where the show is set.
“The characters have to learn to go with the flow through everything,” said Malachi Shenk, a junior who portrays Cornelius Hackl, Horace’s employee. “Horace is thrown for a loop, and he goes through a whole bunch of ups and downs, but he makes it through, and at the end, he’s happy and Dolly’s happy.”
Happiness and love are overall themes of the show, said senior Ava Fouse, who plays Irene Molloy. “It’s really a happy and uplifting show,” she stated.
“Hello, Dolly!” features a cast of 35 sixth- through 12th-graders, and the students have been working on the musical since December. It shows in the quality of the production numbers, said Jordan DeGroft, a junior who portrays
Horace. “There are some really outstanding scenes, including ‘The Waiters’ Gallop,’” he commented. “That’s one to really look forward to. You’ll see a bunch of featured dancers do a really hard dance.”
Even though the show is set in the 1800s and it’s been performed for decades, it will leave audiences with a timeless message, Malachi remarked.
“It goes to show you that in life there are ups and downs, and things might not always go your way,” he said. “Things might be a little crazy sometimes, but take a deep breath, and as long as you are intentional, as long as you stay calm, things will turn out.”
Tickets for “Hello, Dolly!” may be purchased at https://mcchris tianschool.hometownticketing .com/embed/all. Tickets will also be for sale at the door.
BY CATHY MOLITORISLiz Givens had an 18th birthday she’ll never forget. The Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) senior celebrated the day with a trip to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, England, where part of the 2005 movie “Pride and Prejudice” was filmed. It was just one of many unforgettable experiences Liz had as an exchange student to the United Kingdom.
Liz, the daughter of Jason and Julie Givens of Elizabethtown, traveled to Birmingham, England, from August of last year through this past February. She acknowledged that it’s not typical for high-school students to travel abroad for a semester, but she really wanted to do it, so she pursued the opportunity,
even though it meant missing out on her senior year at EAHS.
“I had to apply to the program, and I had to get a passport,” she said. “This was my first time out of the United States.”
She narrowed down her destinations to places where English is the native language, because she has tree nut allergies, and she didn’t want to risk her
BY CATHY MOLITORISOn Saturday, May 11, the athletic field at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., will be the site of lots of lacrosse when the third annual Colby Hall Lacrosse Day takes place. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature U10, U12 and U14 games as well as a final game pitting the high school boys’ team against high-school alumni. The event provides an opportunity showcase the sport of
lacrosse and raise funds for the Colby Hall Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 award given to a senior lacrosse player to help the student pursue educational goals. A senior at EAHS, Colby Hall died in a car crash in October 2021. In 2022, his parents, Don and Melanie Hall of Elizabethtown, organized the first Lacrosse Day in honor of their son.
“He loved lacrosse and played for 10 years,” Melanie said, noting that all games played at the event will be in memory of

Kids Fishing Derby will encourage outdoor fun
BY CATHY MOLITORISFishing offers an opportunity for people to learn more about nature, try their luck and have fun. That’s the goal of the annual Kids Fishing Derby, hosted by the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA). The event will be held on Saturday, April 13, at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, from 8 to 11 a.m. All youths age 11 and under as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license are invited to participate.
“The Fishing Derby is important to the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association because it gives local kids an opportunity to catch trout in an area that has been stocked with fish specifically for them,” said Scot Harlacher, DFCA volunteer, who added that more than 300 brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout will be available to catch. “Our hope is also that this event will create a bonding experience for kids with their family and friends. Fishing can also give children a reason to learn specific skills then have a chance
for success by putting those skills into action.”
He’s hoping programs like the Fishing Derby encourage participants to pursue the pastime.
“Many kids will enjoy learning about nature then wish to continue in outdoor activities as they get older,” he said. “Our ultimate goal is to teach and model the ideals of conservation and stewardship so that those values can be continued in the future.”
In addition to the Fishing Derby, Donegal Presbyterian Church will host a pancake breakfast that is open to the general public. The breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall. Proceeds will benefit the church’s annual mission trip to upstate New York.
“We have been running this (mission) project for about 25 years and expect to take about a dozen volunteers this year to work on several handicapped ramps for multiple families,” said Harlacher, who is also a member of the church. “We truly appreciate any donations for this effort because the funds help us with building materials, gas, food, etc., and allow us to have an immediate
Youth event to focus on outdoor activities
Lancaster County Sportsmen for Youth will host the 29th annual Youth Field Day on Saturday, June 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 742 Hollow Road, New Providence. The event offers kids ages 10 to 15 opportunities to engage in outdoor activities. During the event, activities will include archery, canoeing, fish/fly fishing, muzzleloading, .22 rifle, trapping, trap shooting, turkey, and waterfowlers. The Pennsylvania Game Commission will give a presentation.
positive impact on the lives of a few needy families.”
The DFCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the DFCA has raised more than 3,000 trout annually since 1964 for stocking in the Donegal Creek.
“I encourage families to bring their kids to the Fishing Derby because they will have a reasonable chance to catch some trout,” Harlacher commented. “Even if you don’t intend to fish, it’s a great opportunity to be outside and watch how excited and happy the
participants will be. We do hold the event rain or shine, so please be prepared for the weather and cold temperatures.”
All fishermen must bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. DFCA members will be on hand until 11:30 a.m. to help fishermen, but all fishing will stop at 11 a.m. All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the derby. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area, with no street parking.
For more information or to help with the derby, contact club president Brandon Crouser at 717-413-6586.
This event is free and includes a free lunch. All equipment will be provided, and attendees do not need to bring any gear. Parents may accompany their children if they wish.
Preregistration is required at www.register-ed.com/events/ view/208273. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth” on Facebook.
health because she couldn’t read or understand the language.
Ultimately, she chose the United Kingdom, noting, “I’ve always wanted to go there. I’m a huge fan of literature and especially Jane Austen. I knew there were lots of places I wanted to see over there.”
Liz stayed with a host family in the United Kingdom and attended high school classes. She made a lot of friends with both English students and other exchange students from across Europe.
Highlights of her trip included the visit to Chatsworth House as well as sightseeing in Ireland. She also enjoyed the cuisine. “My host family is Jamaican, so they incorporated a lot of spices in their food, which I really liked,” she recalled.
Before she left on her program, Liz completed her credits to graduate from EAHS, and she’ll walk with her class in May. She’s now taking a gap year, working at Masonic Villages in the personal care department and planning additional trips to places including Hawaii.
Liz encourages other students to consider an exchange program. “It’s a great opportunity to experience a completely different culture,” she said. “You get to meet people that you’ll be friends with for the rest of your life, and you get to have experiences you are never going to forget.”
She admits that it took a little time to adjust to being so far from home, but she’s so glad she pushed

herself out of her comfort zone.
“It’s hard when you leave home and you go somewhere you don’t know anybody,” she shared. “I’m a quiet person, but since going there, I’ve opened up a bit more. Talking to people I had never met was a struggle for me and moving into a stranger’s home was scary, but I don’t have any regrets about this trip. It opened me up to so many opportunities I want to explore.

Library seeks public input
The public is invited to provide feedback about Elizabethtown Public Library’s programs and services. One of the survey’s goals is to find out how much people know about the programs and services available at the library. Another goal is to learn what the community values most about the library and what the library could do differently.
A cohort of students from Millersville University are working with the library to gather information from the community and will report back to the library with their findings and suggestions. The library may host a focus group to glean more detailed information from the community in the fall. Anyone interested in participating in the focus group should indicate their interest when completing the questionnaire.
Anyone over the age of 16 is invited to participate in the survey. Participants who complete the survey and provide an email address will be entered into a drawing to win one of three gift baskets. Participants are asked to complete the survey only once. Responses will be kept confidential.
to the survey is also available at www.etownpubliclibrary.org. For those who wish to participate using a printed survey, copies may be picked up at the library during regular business hours. The library is located at 10 S. Market St., just off the square. The survey will be available until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 12.
To learn how to participate in advancing library services in the greater Elizabethtown area, email information@etownpubliclibrary. org or call 717-367-7467.

Cabaret will feature award-winning songs
Volunteers sought for Camp Ladybug
BY CATHY MOLITORISFor a showcase of local talent performing fan favorites and more, head to Susquehanna Stage. The theater, located at 133 W. Market St., Marietta, will host The Cabaret of Award Winners at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.
“The Cabaret of Award Winners features 21 songs from a variety of award-winning shows and artists, including Grammys, Oscars, Tonys and a few others,” said Amy Hoffman, who is co-directing the show with Jason Genise-Gdula. “There will be some well-known standards and Broadway songs, as well as some popular music and even a few the audience may not know.”
a variety of songs with different styles and genres, from toe-tapping to tearjerkers. The songs span the decades, and they might even discover a new favorite.”
To purchase tickets for The Cabaret of Award Winners, visit https:// susquehannastage.thundertix. com.
The show will feature 28 performers entertaining as duets, a trio and several solo artists. “Some of them have been seen at Susquehanna Stage in the past in mainstage shows, children’s shows or cabarets, and some are brand new to our theater,” Genise-Gdula shared. “Performers range from a 7-year-old, who is singing a duet with his mom, to retirees.” Local musicians Sharon Boyer and Pat Enos will serve as accompanists.
This will be the fifth cabaret Hoffman and Genise-Gdula have directed. The duo approached Jim Johnson, the theater’s artistic director, with the idea, and Johnson enthusiastically endorsed it, Hoffman said. “We recognized that there were a lot of people who did not have the time to commit to performing in a full show, and this became a great opportunity for them to be able to perform,” she commented. “It also gives people the opportunity to perform some of their favorite songs.”
The cabaret will be performed on the theater’s Gallery Stage, and the directors recommend purchasing tickets in advance. “Our past cabarets have always sold out, so we added an extra performance this year,” Hoffman said. “Our audience will enjoy hearing

Colby. Colby attended the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center in Mount Joy and was in the welding program. Along with playing lacrosse for EAHS, he played with the Lebanon Valley Lacrosse Club.
After Colby’s accident, the Halls decided to bring back a lacrosse event held for years in Elizabethtown. They reestablished Lacrosse Day to keep their
son’s memory alive and help others through the scholarship.
Sponsors of Lacrosse Day include White Family Dental, Agency 1, Tyson Fence Co., Garden State Tile and Alan Hostetler Insurance.
Along with lacrosse games, the event will feature an auction of items, including two Green Day concert tickets donated by WINK 104 and six Hersheypark
tickets. Food will be available for sale, including pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, hot dogs and dessert. Event T-shirts will be for sale prior to the Lacrosse Day as well as at the event.
Melanie hopes people will come out to enjoy the day, win items in the auction, have fun and remember Colby.
“If you knew Colby, would like to support the event or cheer the boys on, please consider attending,” she said. “It’s also a good opportunity to see action-packed lacrosse games, especially the high school vs. alumni game.”

Program to highlight the Vinegar Ferry
The Maytown Historical Society will meet on Thursday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Maytown. The topic of the program will be the Vinegar Ferry, which ran from the Lancaster County side to the York County side of the Susquehanna River.
Attendees will learn how the Vinegar Ferry got its name, how often the ferry crossed the river and what years it was in operation.
A roundtable discussion will be presented, featuring three men who all have ties to the history of the ferry - Jan Landis, Michael Maloney and Jeff Franek.
Landis is a local expert on ferries and has done extensive research on the Vinegar Ferry. He will share
pictures and information.
Maloney is a local author who lives in York County, but his roots are in Lancaster County. Growing up with family on both sides of the Susquehanna River, he crossed back and forth countless times and explored the river hills every summer. He is the author of “Across the River: Murder at Accomac.”
The original owner of the Vinegar Ferry, Christian Winiker, is his sixth great-grandfather.
Franek currently lives in the original ferry house on the York County side of the river. He plans to display the original deed/indenture of the ferry area.
Community members are welcome to attend the program. Those with questions may contact Linda Good at 717-725-2437.
Students to exhibit artwork at Lancaster museum
The Elizabethtown Area School District recently announced that students from the high school’s Drawing III class have been given the opportunity to showcase their artwork at the Lancaster Museum of Art in April.
The collaboration between the high school art department and the museum marks an endeavor aimed at exploring symbolism and identity in art, inspired by the works of Lancaster native Charles Demuth. As part of the partnership, students delved into Demuth’s collection, examining
the symbolism embedded within his artwork. They were then challenged to reflect on aspects of their own identity and explore how these could be represented through symbols in their own artistic creations.
The opening reception for the exhibition is scheduled for Friday, April 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lancaster Museum of Art, 120 E. King St., Lancaster. This event is designed to provide the community with an opportunity to appreciate the artistic endeavors of Elizabethtown’s youths.
