Celebrate small-town fun at Mayfest

When it comes to Mayfest, an annual celebration of Maytown, this year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever, said Linda Good, event coordinator.

“This will be the first year we are having it in two locations,” she stated. “We are limited with space right in Maytown, and since we had so many vendors who were interested, and so many things we wanted to do, we had to look for a second location.”

Mayfest will be held on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will take place in historic Maytown as well as at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park. The park is located at 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta.

In downtown Maytown, featured festivities will include a house and yard tour of 10 homes. Tickets for the house tour will be available on the day of Mayfest at the Maytown/East Donegal Museum, 4 W. High St. During Mayfest, the museum will display textiles, coverlets and quilts made in Maytown,

Cruising with confidence

W hat are the benefits of riding a bike? How about a healthy dose of confidence, goal setting and personal growth? That’s the mission of Lifecycles, a nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.

The organization kicked off its

ninth season on April 24. A girls’ team meets on Monday evenings at Warwick Township Municipal Park, 315 Clay Road, Lititz. Boys’ teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta; on Wednesdays at Warwick Township Municipal Park; and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Groups ride from 6 to 8 p.m.

and displays of school yearbooks will be featured in the Church of God, 14 W. Elizabeth St. Additional festivities will include the High Street Tavern food stand, serving lunch and dessert in the yard behind the museum; demonstrators of historic crafts outside the museum; and a 2 p.m. program featuring the renewal of vows of a Maytown couple. Second-grade students will perform songs and dances; pictures from a first-grade art contest will be on display at Maytown Reformed Church, 11 E. Elizabeth St.; and a traditional maypole dance will be performed by alumni dancers. “I am looking for people who have danced the maypole when they were in elementary school and who would be interested in dancing it again this year,” Good remarked.

A guided bus tour will take visitors to historic sites throughout town, and penny candy will be available for kids at Ye Olde Shenk’s Store. Also at the store, cookies, whoopie pies and other treats will be for sale. The Church of God will feature a quilt display, a town cakewalk will be held following the maypole dance, and costumed storytellers will be located

throughout Maytown. A historical scavenger hunt with prizes will also be offered.

At the park, festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We will have 87 vendors who will offer a variety of items,” said Megan Shank, who is organizing that portion of Mayfest. Several food trucks will be on hand, live art will be featured and cash giveaways will be held. Live music will be performed in the park by Steel Radiance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by Handsome Greg beginning at 2 p.m. Shank noted that she is still looking for student volunteers to help with the event. Anyone interested in volunteering may call 717-426-1526 and leave a message.

Mayfest is an annual celebration to mark the founding of Maytown, which dates to May 1, 1760. “Mayfest is a wonderful time to come out and learn about the history of Maytown, have lots of fun and greet people that you haven’t seen for a while,” said Good.

5K will raise funds for African camp

W hen children attend the Arm of Hope camp in Ghana, Africa, they not only experience fun and fellowship, but they receive so much more. “Camp gives them three meals a day, which a lot of them don’t get on a regular basis, plus games, story time, small group time activities and Bible teaching time,” explained Greg Grove, who volunteers with the camp. “It’s like a Bible school on steroids - all day long for a week.”

You can help send a kid to camp

by participating in the 10th annual Arm of Hope 5K. The race will be held on Saturday, May 6, beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy.

Grove said the race is a fun opportunity for people who are serious runners and for those who just want to get out and enjoy a community event. “Walkers, strollers and pets are welcome,” he shared. “We have lots of door prizes, as well as homemade baked goods for the top finishers in each age bracket.”

The Elizabethtown Fair will award two $500 scholarships. Scholarships are available to any individual who has exhibited at the Elizabethtown Fair for at least two years. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or currently enrolled in a postsecondary educational

“This is a positive and encouraging environment to learn how to set your goals and grow with other teenagers,” said Lee DeRemer, who founded the organization with his wife, Marcie. “There’s no bullying, and everybody works together. Everyone is in a group for their skill level. We are open for boys or girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and everything we provide is 100% free - the bikes, the meals, the equipment, helmets, everything.”

Along with meeting once a week for their season, which runs through August, Lifecycles teens also participate in special challenge rides. Five teams will be riding during the last week in July and the first week in August, Lee said. One team will travel from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Two boys’ teams and one girls’ team will each ride a loop around Lake Champlain on the border of New York and Vermont, covering 380 miles in seven days. “Our 15 most advanced riders will be riding from Portland, Maine, 530 miles all the way to Valley Forge, Pa.,” Lee noted.

teens are also invited to participate in Saturday rides throughout Lancaster County.

“These are opportunities to try something new and be out all day or almost all day long,” Lee said. “They are opportunities for mentoring and more confidence building.”

He emphasized that although this season has already begun, teens can join Lifecycles at any time. “We have a lot of kids who are involved in spring sports, and we tell them, ‘Hey, just wait until school is over and come on out that first week in June and start right up with us,’” he shared. “They haven’t missed anything by missing the first few weeks.”

Lee said the success of Lifecycles has relied heavily on volunteers, and the organization is always looking for more people to help.

“After nine years of doing this, it’s really wonderful to be part of the community where there’s so many people pitching in and so many different ways to help one another,” he remarked. “We are really thrilled to be a part of that.”

GEARS will offer Tennis Clinics for youths and adults on Saturday, May 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the tennis courts at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The clinics will be taught by Brenda McBride, EAHS boys’ and girls’ varsity coach and PTR certified instructor, and high school players. Participants will need to bring a tennis racket.

In an Intro to Tennis for Kids clinic, participants will learn tennis basics while engaging in fun and interactive games. Players will be divided by age and level to ensure skill-specific instruction. Participants will need to bring a tennis racket.

Tennis 101 for Adults will offer an opportunity for people age 17 and up to learn the basics of tennis in

a relaxed environment. Basic grips, strokes and scoring will be covered. The program is suitable for those new or returning to tennis.

Bears compete

If you are looking for springtime certainties and do not like the April showers bring May flowers rhyme, look no further than Landisville on a Saturday in April. That is where you will find the Black Knight invitational, with the 19th annual edition held April 15th. Elizabethtown was one of 25 teams competing with the Bears collecting a handful of top 10 performances.Unfortunately, weather cancelled the meet before all events were contested.

Anna Rank led that group, capturing silver in the pole vault by clearing 11-6. Jordan DiRisio and Ali Fink both made the 1600m podium with DiRisio taking 4th and Fink 7th. The 400m relay team added a 5th place to finish the Lady Bear podium tally.

Brendan Rilatt claimed the top spot for the boys, finishing

6th in the discus with Colin Rilatt finishing 17th. Bradley Kreider enjoyed the final top 10, placing 9th in the 1600m. Jaycen Conrad joined Kreider in the 1600m, finishing 15th. Elizabethtown also had two top 20 finishes in the triple jump thanks to the work of Caleb Kreider and Tavon Schoenberger. Kreider claimed 14th while Schoenberger finished 18th.

Both teams returned to regular dual meet competition on the 17th with the boys falling to Ephrata by an 86-46 final while the Lady Bears fell by an 83-67 final.

LACROSSE

The girls’ lacrosse team kept themselves near the top of the Section Two standings with wins over Warwick and Lancaster Country Day pushing the Lady Bears to 5-2 in league action.

A strong first half coupled with Sydney Pope’s 12 saves was enough for E-town to get

by Warwick 10-6 on the 13th. Dani Bruno lit the lamp five times with Aiesha Rios the only other multi-goal scorer. Moira Shott, Josie Spayd and Callie Love-Morris cleaned up the remaining three goals.

Things were not as close on the 17th with Elizabethtown blowing by LCD 19-2 on the strength of a 12-2 opening half blitz. Rios fronted the offense with six goals, but Shott was close behind with five of her own. Bruno added three while Spayd picked up two more. Piper Patrick, LoveMorris, and Charley LengelKramer split the three remaining scores while Pope needed just five saves to earn the win.

The world of lacrosse is not all sunshine and roses for Elizabethtown as losses to Warwick and Lancaster Country Day have the boy’s team still on the lookout for their first win of 2023.

The Bears were unable to find the back of the net in the April 13th clash with Warwick, falling by a 17-0 final. AJ Buch finished with 11 saves.

Perez had just one hit, but it was a two-run shot that put E-town on the board in the sixth. Hassinger added a sac fly in the frame while Kimble pushed across the final run by hitting into a fielder’s choice.

Offense was hard to find in E-town’s 1-0 loss to Solanco on the 19th with teams combining for eight hits and one run. Perez had three of those hits while Shayter took the complete game loss.

VOLLEYBALL

TENNIS

The 2023 regular season has officially come to an end for Elizabethtown boy’s tennis. The Bears closed out their 13-match run with a win over Lebanon on the 17th coupled with a loss to Lower Dauphin on the 18th.

Luke Risser was the lone victor against LD, taking the top singles match. He repeated that feat against Lebanon with Emory Morgan, Finn Grinnell and Ethan Duralja joining in for singles victories. Risser and Morgan teamed up for their doubles win while Grinnell and Duralja did the same. Bennett Kreider and Levi Sites finished out the doubles sweep.

BASEBALL

The baseball team finds themselves in the middle of a mid-season slump with consecutive losses to Ephrata, Lampeter-Strasburg and Solanco dropping the Bears to 6-5 on the year.

Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead against Ephrata on the 14th, Elizabethtown ended up on the wrong side of the 4-3

final. The Mountaineers answered E-town’s opening shot with a three run second, adding what would prove to be a valuable insurance run in the third. That 4-2 cushion held until the top of the seventh when an Ephrata error allowed the Bears to plate a single run, setting the final at 4-3.

Pike Burkett took the loss after pitching the opening one and one-third innings and surrendering three of those Ephrata runs. Evan Hassinger covered the remaining time, adding five strikeouts to his one run allowed. Isaiah Shayter and Kaden Kimble pushed across the first inning runs.

The Bears were on the other end of an early burst, falling behind LampeterStrasburg 4-0 after one inning on their way to a 10-4 loss on the 17th. The Pioneers plated the remainder of their runs in the sixth, putting the 10-run rule in play. E-town kept the game going with a three-run bottom half, adding their final run in the seventh.

Burkett was hit with another loss, this one for covering five and two-thirds innings. Noah Locke finished things off on the mound with the pair combining for seven walks and four strikeouts.

What is the best way to shake off a loss that snapped a three-game winning streak? Another win. At least that is the route the boys’ volleyball team took after suffering a 31 loss to Garden Spot, bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Cocalico.

The streak busting loss came on April 13th where Etown answered Spot’s 25-23 game one win with a 25-22 game two win. The Spartans took over from there with wins of 25-23 and 25-14 setting the 3-1 final. Eli Miller finished with 38 assists and Cooper Torborg 13 kills in the loss.

The bounce back came on the 18th where E-town missed the sweep thanks to Cocalico’s 25-17 game three win. Wins of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22 secured the match for the Bears. Josh McCoy finished with 16 kills and five aces while Seth Rajnic added 13 kills and six blocks. Miller added 46 assists and Prabin Bhattarai 10 digs.

SOFTBALL

The softball team followed the same script with a loss to Ephrata snapping a three-game run followed by a win over Lampeter-Strasburg planting the seed for a

The loss to Ephrata was on the 14th with the Lady Mountaineers scoring five of the final six runs to pull away for the 9-6 win. The Lady Bears did enjoy a 5-4 lead before the tide started to turn in the fourth with only a single run in the fifth breaking up Ephrata’s surge. Leah Aldous and Sophia Finch provided the early spark, combining for f our RBI. Chloe Wilkinson and Astyn Calaman finished with one RBI each.

Elizabethtown returned to their winning ways on the 17th, rolling LampeterStrasburg by a 16-7 final. Finch carried the big bat for E-town, totaling five RBI that included a three-run shot in the fourth. Carli Zerphey and Wilkson split four hits and four RBI down the middle to help the cause.

A chicken barbecue will be available to purchase by donation so participants can take lunch home with them. The meal will include a chicken leg and thigh, a baked potato, a homemade roll and a whoopie pie. Pickup for the chicken barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the barbecue is open to members of the public even if they are not participating in the 5K.

The top male and top female overall finishers of the race, along with winners in the master’s brackets - for those over age 40 - will receive a special Arm of Hope prize, Grove said. Participants in the 5K can raise money to support the camp while also earning prizes like Arm of Hope hoodies and Yeti mugs for their fundraising efforts.

children living in the slums of Ghana. The Arm of Hope camps are held for two weeks each year after Christmas. The first week is for elementary school-age children, and the second week is for teenagers.

In the past, more than 600 children have attended the camps. Both Grove and his race co-director, Keith Franz, have served at the camp.

Grove explained that Arm of Hope began as a ministry of Hope Community Church but has since been granted nonprofit status as its own organization.

He noted that walk-ins are welcome to register for the 5K, but early registration is encouraged. Online registration will close the day before the event. To register, visit https://armofhope5k.org. Grove also encouraged people to sponsor a participant at the same website.

Arm of Hope will hold a 5K to benefit a camp for children in Ghana.

PA Hero Walk will benefit veterans

Whether you walk, run or ride a bike, you’re invited to the PA Hero Walk, hosted by Post 1306 of the Catholic War Veterans. The event will be held on Saturday, May 20. It will step off from Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., and end in Fisherman’s Park, 111 Collins Road, Falmouth.

“We have people who run. We have people who bring their kids in strollers. We have people who bring their dogs,” explained Mike Mastriania, post commander. Sameday registration will begin at 7 a.m., with bike riders departing at 8 a.m., runners taking off at 8:10 a.m. and walkers departing at 8:20 a.m. The route will cover 14 miles along the Susquehanna River. Advance registration is encouraged and is available at www.pretzelcitysports.com.

“We will have shuttle buses, so people can park at water stations along the route and take the shuttle to the Crossings starting at 7 a.m.,” Mastriania noted. “They can also take the shuttle back to their car after the event.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit PA Hero Walk, a group of veterans that walks from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh every year in June to raise awareness for veterans’ needs, said Donna Ernst, post manager. This will be the first time Post 1306 has held its event since 2019.

The mission of the Catholic War Veterans is to provide services for God, for country and for home, Ernst commented. “We support all veterans,” she shared. “We have 650 members from across Lancaster County.”

Post 1306 moved to its current Columbia location in 2013. It held its first Hero Walk in 2014. In addition to being a private club, the group organizes multiple events and efforts throughout the year, including visiting veterans in VA hospitals, participating in parades, hosting an Easter party and a Christmas party for families, distributing food to veterans throughout Lancaster County and holding

flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day, June 14.

Both Ernst and Mastriania said the club helps them fulfill their desire to serve veterans.

“My father was a veteran. He served in the Army,” Ernst shared. “My dad was my heart.”

Mastriania served in the Marine Corps from 1980 to 1983 and has been a member of the Catholic War Veterans since 2016. He said he not only likes helping other veterans through the organization, but also enjoys the club atmosphere and the bonds that have formed between members. “We are always looking

for more members,” he said. “We get a lot of positive feedback from our members. They say it feels like they are with family when they are here.”

Orders for the chicken barbecue must be received by Monday, May 8. A limited number of extra meals will be available on the day of the event. On Saturday, April 29, Another Wildflower Walk will begin at 1:30 p.m. Participants will learn to identify early spring bloomers.

art experience, but they should bring their own journal. Color will be provided.

Cleanup, planting events set

The Marietta Shade Tree Commission has planned several events.

On Saturday, April 29, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., commission members will be on the Northwest River Trail in Marietta near its entrance at Front and Chestnut streets to continue cutting ivy away from the trees. Volunteers are welcome, and they should

bring clippers and small saws.

Also on April 29, there will be an expert tree planting demonstration at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. The program will begin at noon.

Tree planting will begin on the Northwest River Trail, sponsored by the Shade Tree Commission in cooperation

with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, on Saturday, May 27. Volunteers will need to bring shovels and meet at Chestnut and Front streets in Marietta.

On Marietta Day on Saturday, May 20, the Shade Tree Commission will give away 325 trees and shrubs supplied by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Come out to Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, May 6, and you can enjoy an allyou-can-eat breakfast that supports the church’s Mission Outreach Team. A strawberry and waffle breakfast will be served from 6 to 10 a.m., or until sold out, in the fellowship hall of the church. “The star is our strawberry waffles,” noted Gail Ruhl, who heads the Mission Outreach Team with her husband, Chuck. “We normally get our strawberries from North Carolina, where they are fresh in season right now. We are also going to have pancakes, scrambled eggs as well as eggs to order, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausage, home-fried potatoes and beverages.”

Proceeds from the meal will benefit a mission trip church members will take in June. “We’re actually venturing into a new area we’ve never gone before,” Gail said. “ We are going to be going to Vermont, near the capital, Montpelier. We’re going to be working alongside Central Vermont Mission.” Gail said the mission team members were searching for mission ideas when they came upon this one, and it seemed like a good fit. She noted that Central Vermont Mission has been working in the area

since 2011, when it formed right after the region was hit by Tropical Storm Irene. “This is ongoing even from then, and I think that might surprise a lot of people,” Gail remarked. “W hen we say we’re going to volunteer in that area, they may think, ‘What has happened there recently?’ but it takes years and years to recover from disasters. At the beginning of a disaster, there are a lot of volunteers and a lot of money, and then that all dries up, but the need is still there.” The group will be serving lowincome families and the elderly, helping with construction or remodeling and maintenance work. New this year, they are also going to be helping to feed

the homeless in the area by preparing lunch and distributing it to them.

As for the breakfast, no reservations are required, but Gail recommends coming early because items sell out. “People can expect some really good food, and it’s just a really great place to come even if you’re by yourself or you’re a couple or you have a few friends that you get together,” she commented. “It’s a great environment just to sit and socialize, and it’s also a good opportunity if you’ve never been to the church to ask some of us questions about our church or look around. Or, if you’re interested in mission work, even though

our group is mainly people from our church, we’re certainly not against others joining us, so we are willing to share our experiences with people and invite them along or even to come to church if they feel like it.”
